Cool Rock&roll, Surf, Beat AND Garage-rock From Philippines IN THE 60s!! Led by teen guitar wizard Ramon “rj” Jacinto, RJ & THE Riots was one of the first rock&roll /beat bands from the Philippines and certainly the first to release original rock n’ roll songs with lyrics in their own country. This is the first ever reissue of their second album, originally released in 1964 and now impossible to find (four stars rating in Hans Pokora’s 1001 Record Collector Dreams book). Including original songs like the monster instrumental “Fuzzed”, the garage sounding “Advertising Man”, “Girl Nice”, the surf rock of “Trip To Manila” and more plus a few rad covers (Beach Boys, Buddy Holly…). The album was recorded at the home studio built by whizz kid Ramón Jacinto, who also operated his own record label (RJ Productions), magazine (Teenstone) and radio station (from his parent’s backyard!) RJ and the Riots started as a high school band of classmates composed of Ramon “rj” Jacinto (lead guitar), Alan Austria (bass guitar), Jimmy Colayco (rhythm guitar) and Bernie Evangelista (drums) with ages ranging from 15-17 years old. They were one of the first bands with electric instruments in the Philippines and this album marked the transition from instrumental rock to vocals. Today, RJ is a well-known businessman (founder of a TV and radio network), Pinoy rock&roll icon and continues his musical journey performing rock n’ roll hits of the 50’s – 80’s at his own Bistro “rj” music lounge, where the top of Philippine society, movers and shakers, go to dance and sing to RJ’s rock n’ roll classics. *Remastered sound and color insert with liner notes & rare photos. *Download card with the album plus one bonus track from a rare 45 Riyl: Ventures, Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, Stones, JAN & Dean, BeatLES…

Limited to 1200 copies. While overshadowed by its euphonic earworm, this is a remarkably deep and diverse album. With saccharin-saturated jangly pop that verges on bubblegum ('If I Could'), infectious Vox organ propelled grooves ('Sound Of Love'), fuzz-driven garage ('Reality') and the splendid and inventive sonic atlas 'Big Cities'! Come for the single, stay for the album! All analog, pressed on Abnak gold vinyl!

Limited 180gm audiophile vinyl LP repressing of this classic album by the Southern rock legends. Though the Southern rock genre existed before and after Lynyrd Skynyrd, no other band personified the lifestyle quite like this motley crew. Released in 1973 Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd was Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album. There are few records that sound this raw and uncompromising, especially records by debut bands. The genius of Skynyrd is that they un-self-consciously blended album-oriented hard rock, blues, country, and garage rock, turning it all into a distinctive sound that sounds familiar but thoroughly unique. Includes 'I Ain't The One', 'Simple Man' and the legendary 'Free Bird'.

Medway garage band the Prisoners are loved by a legion of fans, including quite a few who went on to be in successful bands themselves. Those who saw them live speak in reverential terms, yet they never sold records in large amounts and their gigs, whilst packed, were almost always in small venues.

“Thewisermiserdemelza” – an excellent embodiment of their British R&B-influenced sound – falls into an odd place in their career. They often professed to be unhappy with the album, yet their first-generation fans cherish it, particularly songs such as ‘Hurricane’. It was recorded in 1983 for Ace Records’ Big Beat label and produced by Phil Chevron – a new experience for the band, who self-released their first album, “A Taste Of Pink”.

The record shows the growing complexity of their music – the contrast in the influences between 1964 and 1966 (the rougher R&B moving into nascent psychedelia). It is a cracking listen from beginning to end. The fast tracks such as ‘Hurricane’, ‘Love Me Lies’ and ‘Somewhere’ are coruscating, whilst the beautiful ‘Tonight’ offers an insight into other directions that the band would take.

A Time of Changes is the debut studio album by British heavy metal band Blitzkrieg, originally released in 1985.

Part of the the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, A Time of Changes came out when vocalist Brian Ross decided to reform Blitzkrieg and record the album they wanted to record before their split-up in 1981. After the original split of Blitzkrieg, Ross sang with Avenger, Satan and Lonewolf. "Pull the Trigger" is in fact a Satan song that wasn't featured on their first album Court in the Act [MOVLP3056]. Ross recorded it with Satan, and it appeared on an earlier demo. Satan guitarist Russ Tippins actually makes a guest appearance on the song.

"Blitzkrieg", originally also the B-side of the band's debut single, was covered by Metallica for the B-side of the 1984 single "Creeping Death" and later released on the Metallica album Garage Inc.

A Time of Changes is available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on translucent red & black mixed coloured vinyl and includes an insert with lyrics.

The Fluid are arguably the great unsung band from the fertile underground rock scene of the late '80s and early '90s. The Denver five-piece - John Robinson (vocals), James Clower (guitar), Matt Bischoff (bass), Garrett Shavlik (drums), and the dear departed Ricky Kulwicki (guitar) - fused the fire of '80s hardcore with crunching Detroit protopunk, '60s garage rock, and '70s rock swagger. Think MC5, Faces, '70s Stones, all cranked up and really high on Sex Pistols and Black Flag singles. Rising from the ashes of early-'80s Denver bands Frantix (whose "My Dad's a Fuckin' Alcoholic" is a true gem of American punk) and White Trash, The Fluid were the first non-Seattle band to sign to Sub Pop, and Clear Black Paper was the second full-length album the label ever released. The label honchos were fans of Frantix, and happily got involved with The Fluid when the opportunity arose via the label's European licensing partner, Glitterhouse. Witnessing The Fluid's dominant live presence helped - a particularly fiery early show at Seattle's Central Tavern featured The Fluid, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, and Soundgarden all trying to outdo one another on stage. The band fit right in on Sub Pop's nascent roster of acts who, wherever they stood on the spectrum of punk/rock/metal, shared a commitment to thunderous riffs and explosive live shows. Legendary for their ferocious stage presence, The Fluid toured all over the US and Europe, holding their own and then some on bills with Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Dinosaur Jr., and other powerhouses of the era. From 1986 to 1993, The Fluid put out four albums and a number of EPs and singles, including a split 7" with Nirvana in 1991, before doing one album for a major label and promptly disbanding.Yet, while their partners-in-crime bulldozed into the mainstream, The Fluid remained something of a cult band, their audience confined to those who got hip during the band's existence, and crate diggers who nabbed original vinyl or CDs, which had quickly become rarities after sellin...

Transparent Orange Vinyl, limited to 500 copies. The Tygers of Pan Tang were one of the foremost New Wave of British Heavy Metal Bands and they hit the album charts running when their 1980 debut album Wildcat reached #18 in the UK charts. After three further albums with MCA, they recorded this album for Zebra Records in 1987. Burning in the Shade is the most melodic of their releases and features the line-up of Jon Deverill (vocals), Steve Lamb (guitar), Brian Dick (drums) with guests Steve Thompson and Phil Caffrey.

The Cosmic Dropouts was formed in 1988 by Arne Thelin (vocals) and Morten Henriksen (guitar), and was together with The Willy B Review in the forefront of Norwegian garage rock. In addition to Arne and Morten, the band consisted of Pål Andreassen on organ, Carsten Johansen on bass (later replaced by Lars Albrecht and Stig Jøraholmen) and Elvin Sjursen on drums (later replaced by Rune Johnsen). This line-up recorded the band’s first release that year, a four-track vinyl 7“ EP titled Crashed Cadillac and Broken Hearts. It got good reviews in Norway and landed the band their first gigs. Their next release, an 8-track mini-album titled Groovy Things released in 1989, got raving reviews in Norway and abroad, and paved way for gigs at bigger venues and landed them their first and only gigs outside Norway with this line-up. They played at the New Music Seminar in New York that year in addition to a gig at The Khyber Pass pub in Philadelphia. Previous remotely started discussions with Skyclad Records continued in New York and resulted in this album’s original release. The mini-album and the EP together with their first single Let’s Go To The Beach (also released in 1989), plus a handful of songs recorded separately, were released as a full length album with the title Groovy Things by Skyclad Records in the US in 1990. By that time Arne had left the band (September 1989) and started The Lust-O-Rama, but the band continued with a new singer (Morten Karlsen) and released another two albums after that - Hoolabaloo on That’s Entertainment Records (1991) and Sonic Circus on Kicksville Records (1993). This re-issue was remastered December 2021.

Cutting their teeth as teens in a West Bromwich bedroom, The Sea Urchins were nothing like the heavy metal that seemed to fill every bar in the UK Black Country. Fringe haircuts, perfect trousers, suede jackets and infectious tambourines gave plenty of hints as to their youthful ambition, but nothing could fully prepare you for just how utterly spellbinding these songs would be. Compiling their fanzine-only flexi material with the full complement of singles for Sarah Records, Stardust runs chronologically from late 1986 to the middle of 1989, beginning with the singles split for Clare Wadd’s Kvatch and Matt Haynes’ Sha La La, before hitting the first of what would be an even hundred releases from the new label Wadd and Haynes would form - Sarah. The song that launched a legendary label and defined a sound, a scene, a place and time; “Pristine Christine” still rings out as immediate and magical today as it did on first listen. What a glorious jangly rush racing around the corners of pop’s history! The band would reach such heights time and again over the course of this three year burst. The melancholy swinging folk of “Everglade” and it’s wonderfully yearning vocal; the organ-fueled british invasion garage rock sing-a-long of “Solace”; the playful psych pop of “A Morning Odyssey”; the acoustic sweep of “Wild Grass Pictures”; the perfectly named “Summershine” leaving you with a ramshackle smile out on the dancefloor. All of it is just so filled with delicate humanity, yet somehow absolutely perfect. As Bob Stanley said about the shimmering ballad “Please Rain Fall” while bestowing it with NME Single Of The Week (an honr also bestowed upon “Pristine Christine”), “think of some variations on the word marvelous and you’re most of the way there.” In their time, they might have seemed wildly out of step, but it’s not crazy to say that things could have been very different for the likes of Radiohead, The La’s, and Oasis without The Sea Urchins.

Cult Japanese power-pop/punk band Fifi and the Mach III was initiated in the early 1980s in the southern port town of Kitakyushu by childhood sweethearts Fifi and Nolly, Ramones fans that loved The Stooges and The Pistols. When guitarist Tsukasa joined, Fifi dropped out to raise a baby, but re-joined in 1989, leading to their signing to garage rock label 1+2 Records. The acclaimed debut CD, Attack The Zombies—here issued on vinyl for the first time—had a couple of Pistols covers and a cut of The Kinks’ “I Need You,” as well as unique originals like “Dog Of The Trend” and “Raw Power Queen,” which hinted at their influences, yet yielded a distinctive sound. 4 bonus tracks !

Expanded 30th anniversary re-issue of The Lemonheads' classic 1993 album with brand new sleeve artwork! The breakthrough record that took American alt rock global and catapulted Evan Dando into the hearts of a generation. With a wealth of unreleased demos, alternative versions and rarities - including covers of Victoria Williams, Buddy Holly and The Flying Burrito Brothers plus The Lemonhead's take on the Cole Porter standard 'Miss Otis Regrets'. In the 90's Evan's Lemonheads produced hit after a hit, a string of super cool singles: 'Big Gay Heart', 'Into Your Arms', 'It's About Time', and 'The Great Big NO'. Pure genius filling the radio waves and taking the stage... Some 30 years on; Evan is still knocking that song writing thing out of the park and 'Come On Feel The Lemonheads' sounds as fresh and perky as it ever did. Amid the hits on the original record are stencils and outlines for yet more magical music and now this deluxe edition adds a second disc of demos and acoustic versions, plus a host of one-offs from sessions and compilations that add further colour to the myth and how it was created. There's the in-demand combo lovingly covering Victoria Williams' 'Frying Pan' from her 'Sweet Relief' album, which is joined by an eclectic set of flipsides and out-takes, like their version of original garage punk nugget 'Little Black Egg' by The Nightcrawlers, Evan's homage to Gram Parsons on the winsome 'Streets Of Baltimore' and Buddy Holly's melancholy 'Learning The Game'. Evan knows a good song when he hears it, as 'Come On Feel The Lemonheads' certainly proved. "Come On Feel was home to some of his best, sharpest writing - fabulous sunny powerpop and beautiful ballads" The Guardian "'Come On Feel The Lemonheads' is all it purports to be: a chance to dip into Evan's jumbled-up, dope-smoking love-buggy of a life and celebrate it" NME

90s NYC indie heroes The Van Pelt have had a lasting power far greater than so many of the other once bigger bands of that era have had. The sort of interest that has neither waxed nor waned over the decades since they disbanded, yet just mysteriously continues on despite their discography being out of print since the end of the last millennium. So what is it that sets them apart? Too soft to have ran with the AmRep or Touch and Go crowds, not hip enough to have made sense on Matador or Merge, ernest yet not histrionic enough to make it onto the “best emo bands” lists, not weird enough to be on bills with Arto Lindsay and Thurston Moore, etc. In a sense, their outsider status comes not from the wings, but from the dead center eye of the storm. The 90s were happening all around them, they were witnesses thereof, yet they emerged transcendent of it all. You Follow? Maybe it’s worth having a listen to see what I mean.

Barcelona’s La Castanya records is treating us with the first ever rerelease of the two Van Pelt albums to mark the 20th anniversary of Sultans of Sentiment, their benchmark album. They teased us in 2014 that this might be on the docket with the release of Imaginary Third, a collection of singles and unreleased Van Pelt tracks which were originally intended to have been the components of their third album, including the alt-famous “Speeding Train”. Now we’ll finally have access to their entire discography. The first album, Stealing From Our Favorite Thieves is an explosion of anthems belted out as if the war was already lost yet they were hoisting that tattered banner anyhow until there wasn’t a shred to salvage. The momentum coming out of that album had every major label in the States salivating at the possibility of turning them into the next Nirvana. Instead, The Van Pelt followed it up by pulling the van into the garage, leaving the engine running, funneling the exhaust into their lungs, and blissfully deciding to bow out of the race with the epic Sultans of Sentiment. Of course as the story goes, their intended financial flop was the exact opus that jettisoned them into the history books. Buy both albums. You’ll need them both.

Although not technically a Detroit-based garage group, this Cincinnati band fit in as honorary Detroiters by the time this single was released. The Greenhornes were purveyors of period-perfect 1960s rock n roll a la the Pretty Things and the Kinks. Plus, they were immediately set apart by their grim reputation of touring in a '67 Cadillac hearse.

This single was recorded at Jack White's house in southwest Detroit right before the release of the Greenhornes' debut LP and the b-side is a re-imagined version of one of their 2nd LP's strongest tracks ''Shadow of Grief''. Band members Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler would go on to be the rhythm section in the Raconteurs while Brian Olive would later join the Soledad Brothers and make serious contributions to Dr. John's revered ''Locked Down'' album.

This album, recorded live after the release of Bertrand Burgalat's first album (The Sssound of Mmmusic, 2000), is a unique testimony of a passionate encounter, of explosive concerts and an exceptional musical adventure, a mixture of soulful rhythms, oniric keyboards and songs with chiseled lyrics and harmonies.

Out of stock on vinyl for decades, it will be reissued and published in December 2022, with a text by Philippe Manœuvre. 21 years after its first publication, it has not aged a bit. It includes tribute covers ("Follow Me" by Amanda Lear, "Tears Of A Clown" by Smokey Robinson), and a version of "Easy Tiger", recorded at the same time for Depeche Mode.

"This album brings back the great psychedelic concerts that Bertrand gave at the time. For me, Aux Cyclades électronique is in the running for the title of most beautiful song in the world, I haven't changed my mind." Philippe Manoeuvre, excerpt from the innersleeve note, April 2022

"A.S Dragon is arguably the best French rock band of today. Nearly an hour of psyche-magnetic madness, the spectacular collision of a Gainsbourg theorist playing his melodies to a Jefferson Airplane from Clignancourt charged with pushing all galactic limits." Philippe Manoeuvre, Rock & Folk, October 2001

"Bertrand Burgalat meets A.S Dragon could satisfy both French Touch fans and Rock'n'Roll purists. It sounds like the resurrection of a sixties garage rock band, somewhere between Detroit and Combs-la-ville. Burgalat for charity." Philippe Barbot, Télérama, November 2001

"This is a fantastic remix! It sounds a bit like 70's funk. Bertrand has taken the song and reworked it from top to bottom, re-recording people on every part. It sounds like a James Bond song. It's really one of the best remixes we've ever done. " Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) on "Easy Tiger", Magic, May 2001

"I wish this song could last my whole life..." Virginie Despentes, on "Aux Cyclades électronique", "Vernon Subutex

We were tired of instrumental music, and completely burned out after touring 300 + shows a year in our previous band (the Bomboras). We needed a change, we needed rock n roll…fuzz guitar and leather. We were out for blood…big boots, bikes, and Wild Angels! Recorded 100% analog and mastered to tape. Garage punk in its purity. Take all your biker movie soundtracks and throw em away, replace it with the soundtrack to your life…TO Hell With THE Lords !!

The Catheters are a scourge on pretty boy rock 'n' roll, a festering wound in the ear of all things delicate, a hot razor blade slashing through tight knots of control. You grew up on the Germs and The Pagans, took a left turn into Pere Ubu, Electric Eels, and Pussy Galore, and injected '60s garage-psyche like The Yardbirds, Blue Cheer, and Love into your veins at a young age. The Catheters are your catharsis for maniacal living. This is the Seattle band's third full-length of pent-up brawlers, and they're still radiating the same dark, perilous edge - working once again with respected producer John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Unwound, Blonde Redhead) - only now they've coaxed out new textures to coarsen the mix. Howling_ is alive, feral and twitching with energy.

Reissued extremeley limited, long out-of-print EP from long-running garage rock band’s early formative period in San Francisco! Encased in a brown paper wrapping like a forgotten bit of smut from behind the beaded curtain, this unassuming disc is a time-capsule back to John Dwyer’s early SF days, janglingly fingerpicked wisps of melody and electronics baking in the all-too anemic sunshine of San Francisco’s elusive summer. Like a seashell to the ear, one can hear within it Baker Beach bike ride excursions, holding court and gently harassing passers-by on a Haight street stoop, and midnight rambles with friends from out of town, daring the sun to come up. Somewhere chronologically between the folky whisper of Songs About Death And Dying and the recently reissued Cool Death Of Island Raiders, this one’s been vexing to find for way too long and Castle Face has decided to give it “the treatment”. May it awaken the gentle glow of possibility dappled with the dancing shadow of danger that it stirs around this castle.

First Time On Vinyl!
Reissue of one-off 2003 project by Doug Martsch (Built to Spill), featuring Ned Evett, Ian Waters, and John Mullin
Includes covers of David Bowie, Captain Beefheart, The Pretenders and more

Boise Cover Band’s "Unoriginal Artists" is basically a Built to Spill album, the vision of its founding member Doug Martsch.

In 2002 while Built to Spill was on hiatus, Doug was inviting various local musician friends to his home studio for improvised jam sessions. Eventually he settled on guitarist John Mullin, long time BTS Soundman Ian Waters on drums and his former Treepeople bandmate Scott Schmaljohn on guitar. Doug played bass. After a while they lost interest in improvising and decided to learn a few covers.

When Scott no longer had time for the project he was replaced by boise guitar player Ned Evett. While Doug, John , and Ian were ok musicians Ned was a world class virtuoso, winner of the 2003 North American Guitar compitition and inventor of the glass-necked fretless guitar which he plays on the album.

No one seems to remember exactly how long the band existed, maybe a couple months. There were no ambitions, it was all just for fun. They played the Pretenders song “Back On The Chaingang” but without first listening to the original, relying only on memory. There was talk of maybe playing a show or two but the band ended up never performing live. When everyone’s lives got too busy for the band they made this record and called it quits.

It was recorded on Doug’s 16 track 1/2 tape machine in the same room where the band had always rehearsed, a garage behind his house that his three-year-old son had named the Man House because it had been built for humans, not for lions or elephants. Long time Built to Spill producer Phil Ek engineered the live tracking sessions and then Doug finished the record alone, adding more guitars, some keyboards, lead vocals, and the backing vocal parts that the other band members had been singing during rehearsals. He mixed it alone and Up Records executive Pete Ritchy designed the K-Tel style cover and released a few hundred CD’s on his unofficial side label Jo-Ri. Built to Spill sold them on tour and that was that.

And then seventeen years later Doug asked his friends at EJRC if they could make it available again because it is probably his favorite record he ever made.

Ltd edition Double Sky Blue Vinyl, Gatefold sleeve w/ spot gloss, liner notes + DL card. Bending scuzzy boundaries, ‘Good Bad Not Evil’ is a coming-of-age garage rock classic record. Full of hedonistic delinquent anthems, the fourth studio album from Atlanta punks Black Lips reaches it’s 15 year anniversary. This deluxe edition includes unearthed photos and new liner notes from Jared Swilley and King Khan. The second disc features B-sides and rarities including ‘Cruising’, ‘I Wanna Dance With You’ and ‘Leroy Faster’. ‘Good Bad Not Evil’ perfectly encapsulates the disillusionment of the mid-00s America, slammed between warehouse parties, DIY generator shows and scattered party pics, which was recorded in a little house in Atlanta that had been converted into a studio called the Living Room. Referencing Shangri-Las in the title, this is where their knack for garage gems met Motown; with bass heavy grooves (later remixed by Diplo), a certified country twang and unabashed bravado. Instant hits like ‘Veni Vidi Vici’, ‘Cold Hands’, ‘Bad Kids’ and ‘O Katrina!’ immediately became Black Lips staples. This was a band caught in the eye of the storm, the touring continued, the parties didn’t stop, this was a band bending the scuzzy boundaries of their chosen genre. The record was hailed by the likes of Pitchfork, who proclaimed, “Black Lips are a go-to band for vintage lo-fi freaks, and their raucous live shows have helped them cross over outside of crusty dive bars. ‘Good Bad Not Evil’, however, is the record where naysayers, disinterested friends and acquaintances, people on the street, and anyone else within earshot has to sit up, shut up, and listen.” …and, shut up and listen they did. “A perfect tapestry of sordid pleasure.” NME // “The same rapturous energy as the Sonics and the 13th Floor Elevators.” The Guardian

Thee Oh Sees (ocs) began as songwriter / singer / guitarist John Dwyer's outlet for the experimental instrumentals he was producing in his home studio. Dwyer, who hails from Providence, RI, has been active on the San Francisco indie scene since the late '90s, working with The Coachwhips, Hospitals, Pink & Brown, Yikes, Dig That Body Up It's Alive, and Swords & Sandals, among others. He formed OCS (which is an acronym for Orinoka Crash Suite, Orange County Sound, or whatever Dwyer decided on any given day) to release a string of soundscapes and moody pieces that were decidedly lower key than his previous projects. In time, OCS morphed into an actual band, working under a flurry of names (most notably the Oh Sees or the Ohsees) and eventually settling on Thee Oh Sees. Sounding a bit like The Mamas & The Papas run through a seriously bent garage blender, this line-up features Dwyer on guitar and vocals, Brigid Dawson on vocals and tambourine, Petey Dammit on bass, and Mike Shoun on drums. The band signed with the German Tomlab label and released The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In in 2008. This record marked the first recorded appearance of the newly harder rocking version of the band and was immediately met with an enthusiastic response by fans and rock scribes. It went out of print after its initial pressing sold out quickly, and In The Red is pleased to announce the re-release of this incredible album on vinyl. Music like this is best enjoyed when spun on a turntable, and the gorgeous cover art can only be properly appreciated at 12 inches by 12 inches.

Originally released in 1996 now reissued on "a records" Anton Newcombe's own record label Released on 180 g Green vinyl limited to 1,000 copies Taken from the original vinyl release with the original tracks & re cut at Abbey Road The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK Shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music. Odd Nosdam (renowned musician, DJ, cofounder of Anticon) took the reigns on remixing the Danielson track "Our Givest" (originally from Brother Is To Son) while Jeremy Novak of Dymaxion tackled "Jokin' At The Block" (originally from Tell Another Joke At the Ol' Choppin' Block). When listening to the Odd Nosdam"Our Givest" remix you'll hear the blown out sound of 60's garage rockin' records (early Kinks / the Sonics) coupled with an incescant groove, slightly psychedelicized, in glorius mono with a touch of shoegangster shoegaze haze. With the remix of "Jokin' At The Block" Dymaxion picks up the thread to commemorate the Famile with a patchwork quilt, stitched from handclaps and heartbleats, banjo and bass, call and response. Repress of the Josiah fourth album in new coloured vinyls !!! "Those who’ve experienced Josiah’s groove-heavy swagger know that it’s the guitar of Mat Bethancourt in the starring role, but this trio relies almost as much on the backing rhythms on Procession. Blink and you’ll miss the first two tracks, “Procession” and “Broken Doll,” both of which are under two and a half minutes, but for the other three cuts of studio material (“Thirteen Scene,” highlight “Dying Day” and the more garage rock “Dead Forever”), it’s just as much Beacom and Beasley’s show as it is Bethancourt's. That would be the end if not for the five live tracks from Josiah’s Swedish run in 2007. Four out of the five — “Looking at the Mountain,” “Time to Kill,” “Silas Brainchild” and closer “I Can’t Seem to Find It” — come from the band’s final recorded full-length, No Time, and only “Malpaso,” reaches back further, having first appeared on the 2001 10” Out of the First Rays. Not that we needed it by this time, but these live versions are basically just further confirmation of what underground rock lost with Josiah. The crash-heavy shuffle blues of “Time to Kill” alone are worth whatever they’re asking for Procession." - The Obelisk

"When you have a singer like foot-jittering Brooks Nielsen, landing somewhere between Julian Casablancas with a Bobby Darin croon, onstage singing songs about acid rain atop a jangly, hypnotic guitar strum “last night I dreamed it rained, and nobody complained, and when it quit, no one was ever the same…” their really just seems to be nothing wrong with any of it." -- Fuel TV

"The Growlers play party music that's shot through with an undertone of melancholy. It's as if their sepia-tinted rock songs come equipped with both the drunken cheeriness and the nauseating hangover ... one of the most interesting bands working in the region... these songs exude a casual, understated cool, marked by winding, mesmerizing, spangly guitars and Brooks Nielsen's riveting, woebegone vocals. Even 38-second scraps bear close listening." -- OC Weekly

"The Growlers come from where the surf (and the staph) hit the sand and release music like they’re paid by the minute." -- LA Record

"Distorted guitars, reverbed vocals, and homemade recordings that sound like they were made in 1965." -- Foam

"The Growlers latest release “Are You In or Out?” was somehow magically left off of my best of ‘09 album lists. This Doors-go-surfing band sounds like SoCal. A punk surf psychadelia experience, these guys love sun and drugs and rock n roll and I love them for it. Unapologetically punk rock in their whole persona, they intentionally stray from being too clean around any edge. The Growlers are the highlight of this tour, and are one of the best drug/garage bands around. I almost went baja after their set, which was also cut short, leaving the 5 of us (obviously not students) giving big “fuck yous” to the man." -- Boy With The Boot

This 2023 purple vinyl edition (fourth pressing) is ltd to 500 copies ww!The album owes it's genesis to the psychedelic 60s, and the influence of Sky Saxon, Arthur Lee, Morricone and Syd Barrett, yet sparkles as bright, and fresh as the morning sun. From the baroque pop of "A Sound for Two", to the tight garage licks of "My Heavenly Way" and "Sold for Sinners", to the billowing pop elegance of "The Only One" and "The Ecstacy Once Told", this is an album touched by the hand of spiritual enlightenment. - The Dolly Rocker Movement formed in late 2002 in the inner surrounds of Sydney, Australia. They are influenced by late 60's garage, psychedelia and West Coast folk. The charismatic band leader Daniel Poulter writes beautiful and well-crafted songs and beneath the psychedelic and colourful surface The Dolly Rocker Movement is simply a great pop band with a destinctive sound of their own. -Despite the fact that the album is 13 years old it is the most streamed album on Bad Afro.

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE - The 2nd Album by Los Angeles Garage and Voodoo Trash Wild Men The Guilty Hearts...The band started with 2 Guitars and Hermann Senac on Drums. The Hearts wanted more growl to make your insides move and your body shake...they searched the bars and gutters of Los Angeles and had to go to Berlin to bring Gabriel Hammond of the fantastic The Lords Of Altamont and The Fuzztones to play Bass...so beware! This album burns like cheap booze burns your throat...it finds your demons, your skeletons, your ghosts and invites them to come and party...it will leave you feeling dirty...How Much Garage And Punk can your brain stand? Deep in the Voodoo Soul and the Fuzz Punk, these LA Wild Cats brought to you already with the first album on Voodoo Rhythm Records ( LP: VR1227 CD:VRCD27) a smash hit in the genre but now the Guilty Hearts went a step higher and stomp through the songs like a 18 Wheeled Truck over today's music scene.. there's nothing hip about this music...this is the real thing. "Glassell Park" is a smash hit already and...

before michael yonkers would revise the history of recorded music with the clarion chords of microminiature love, he was in a band called michael and the mumbles, and they made this self-titled LP in 1966. in the premiere spin, their would-be debut comes off as a naive, teenage trip thru the typified garage band moves of this era. but repeated listening reveals a darkness beneath what some dullard might be deceived by as it's crisp, winsome visage. it's only to a slightly less visible degree that the mumbles LP has the same characteristics that would make micro the singularly original piece that is; it's emotionally bleak themes, dissonant undercurrents, and recklessly wild performance. so, once again we have a michael yonkers LP that is going to turn yr world upside down, make the college girls scream and leave you wondering how many more times this can happen. seriously, pigeon falls up here looked like a riot on the sunset strip. indulge yrself. ps. michael and the mumbles is on the king of all known formats (with a digital download coupon, natch) only, the mastertapes used herein are 45 yrs old and aside from the glitch on "cold town", they sound as good as they could and yr not going to have any trouble embracing their magic.

Studio outtakes, in-studio radio shows and live recordings from the busiest six years of Samiam. "Strange to think what it was like back then...I have to admit, the ‘90s were often a trial, there were soaring ‘highs’ and a few doleful ‘lows’. But years later, even thinking of loading our gear into a trailer at 4 am. seems...uh, eventful. At the time I might have been wondering what the fuck I was doing with my life but I now tend to romanticize Samiam’s past. I love to remind James of the time in Vienna a dog walked up to him mid-song, sniffed his leg and pissed on his amp. If that isn’t a priceless moment, I don’t know what is. We performed in other prodigious situations, made loads of friends and thought ‘music’ instead of ‘day job.’ Not to say it was the easy, rock star fun people daydream of... Samiam was a garage band thrust into a world of constant touring, major labels and blown transmissions. Yet, the fact that we were basically failures in the eyes of the music industry didn’t change the simple fact that we were young and having fun. Yay us!”—Sergie.

Recorded 25 years into their career, Giant Sand’s 25th album is a gorgeous and much-celebrated collection of perfectly-crafted, personal songwriting from Howe Gelb. With the exception of one or two wonderfully abrupt and perfectly placed outbursts, it’s a gentle rollercoaster traversing the inner thinking of the why’s and wherefores of whatever, a meditation on time and the ageing process.

Musing on the record, Howe Gelb explains “On this LP I show off an acquired appreciation for the simple lyric. Kinda haiku at times, like flamenco verse, or the blues. I can focus more as it’s obvious there’s only so much time left – that has a production value all its own.”

Highlighting their eclectic and esoteric career, this reissue celebrates the band’s magnificent, long and winding career. This deluxe reissue features restored artwork and newly penned liner notes from MOJO’s Dave Henderson.

Giant Sand have been the primary outlet for the stylistic curveballs and sun-damaged songcraft of singer-songwriter Howe Gelb. In four plus decades he’s managed to reinvent rock, country, blues, punk, garage, lo-fi, jazz, gospel, avant-garde noise and flamenco gypsy music with his impressionistic imagery and expansive observations of the world.

Limited 2011 Record Store Day release! In early 2009, tired of being virtually the only two people in attendance at some of the most exciting rock shows to come through town, Seattle music fans Aubrey Nehring and Darlene Nordyke founded the Portable Shrines Collective, a DIY organization devoted to the promotion of psychedelic, garage, and experimental music. In addition to assembling local bills for nationally touring bands and providing custom projections and poster art, Portable Shrines currently hosts a bi-weekly DJ night, publishes a blog, and produces Escalator Fest, an annual multimedia happening bringing together bands, psych DJs, video artists, and enthusiastic crowds.
The collective’s first compilation—the first ever Seattle-based comp of its kind—Portable Shrines Magic Sound Theatre Vol. I is an exquisitely curated treasure trove of rare or exclusive tracks from eighteen of the most lucid acts currently working in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The compilation features heavy hitters AFCGT and Kinski (Sub Pop), Eternal Tapestry (Thrill Jockey, Not Not Fun), Prince Rama (Paw Tracks), Master Musicians of Bukkake (Important Records) and Diminished Men (Abduction), as well as tracks by a host of up-and-coming Northwest psych acts including Night Beats, Purple Rhinestone Eagle, Midday Veil, This Blinding Light and Brother Raven, all of whom have performed at Escalator Fest or another Shrines-curated event.

Mastered by Mell Dettmer at Seattle’s Aleph Studios and pressed on virgin audiophile vinyl, Portable Shrines Magic Sound Theatre Vol. I is being issued in a limited vinyl-only run of 1000 pieces in gorgeous gatefold packaging featuring original artwork by collective members Aubrey Nehring, Emily Pothast and Steve Quenell.

Shannon AND THE Clams return with a brand new album that tops everything they’ve done before. Sleep Talk features twelve new songs that Kim Fowley and Lou Christie would have clawed each others eyes out to get a hold of in the early ‘60s. Shannon can belt out fierce and fun like Wanda Jackson and Etta James going head to head in a competition for the last bottle of hooch in a song like "King of the Sea" and then play that heartbroken bad girl tryin’ to do good bit that hasn't been done this well since the Tammys or the Shangri-La's in a song like "Tired of Being Bad." Cody, the bands guitarist and other main song writer/singer comes on like a crooning, hiccuping, lo-fi garage version of the aformentioned Christie. Excercising the economy and aggression of Garage Rock in ways Lou would never have imagined but with a tenderness and vocal register you know he'd appreciate. Ian, the band's drummer, in addition to his skill at his own instrument provides additional back ups that would make Ennio Morricone and a tribe of head hunters equally as proud.

Xray Eyeballs is the brainchild of O.J. San Felipe. Originally from San Francisco, O.J. landed in Brooklyn in 2000 after numerous cross-country adventures. Upon settling, O.J. quickly cemented himself in the underground Brooklyn punk, noise, and indie scene playing in numerous bands including Golden Triangle (Mexican Summer, Hardly Art). While Golden Triangle is known as an all around party band that bashes out garage pop tunes that could easily be found on a Nuggets compilation, O.J. had something else in mind for Xray Eyeballs. Starting as a solo project, O.J. aimed to make pop songs that kids could remember after leaving the party. O.J. explains, "I just wanted to make every song sound like a lullaby." These songs are filled with dreamy pop hooks and melancholic melodies, covered in a spooky haze.

Born in a Metz's bunker during the 2006 summer, The Feeling of Love is at first the solo project of G.Marietta (A.H. Kraken's guitarist and singer, In the red records). Ephemeral idea that initially couldn't have gone further than a few short songs, belched and recorded for the tape label Luisance Sonore. The postulate was to play on the garage blues and no-wave's codes in order to find a primitive, repetitive and minimal idea of rock'n'roll. Finally, after 2 years playing gigs in Europe, and a few 7" out (Yakisakana, Floridas Dying, Rococo records, etc.), the "one man band" mutates: from a one-piece to a two-pieces, the Feeling of Love is more generally a three-pieces band, with Seb Normal (the Normals, Crash Normal, etc.) on drums, and s. (A.H.Kraken, Vingt Mille Punks) on keyboards. The Feeling of Love put out then his first two LP's, "Petite tu es un hit" on Yakisakana and "Ok judge revival" on Kill Shaman records. On the latter, the blues and his repetitive gimmicks that were the driving force to reach a trance state are being perverted by krautrock and psychedelism. A year after, the band carries on with the "kraut space garage" vein on his third album, on Born Bad records (mars 2011). Songs stretch out, the drums go more tribal, the synth hammers out his keys on an infinite highway, and the guitar gets lost in delay pedal's fog.

"With the obvious homage the name implies, you'd expect Hanoi Janes to be a group of riot grrrl angnsty types, displaced in time by about 20 odd years. Having taken on the nickname given to Jane Fonda in the 70s because of her anti-war stance on Vietnam, these girls would be all bent up about, well you know, stuff. You'd expect that, but you'd be wrong. It is in fact primarily the work of one guy from Sachen, Germany - Oliver Scharf. But then Hanoi Janes' album, 'Year of Panic', is able to inspire all kinds of misconceptions. Name of the band aside, would you expect a German guy (who's a bit handy with an eight-track) to produce a series of beautifully lo-fi, sub two-minute, surf-pop tracks, full of buzzing guitar and bubblegum spirit. Maybe - maybe not. But that's just what Scharf has done. The sound is distinctly garage, reminiscent of a 70s surf sound, and like The 5. 6. 7. 8's, Hanoi Janes are able to launch into the genre with the luxury of being removed from the scene itself. Tracks like opener, 'The Boys Are Out' and 'Beach Kids' are unashamedly infectious, utilising catchy hooks, hand claps and the odd 'Ooo ooo ooo' to great effect. The production is fuzzy, but that only adds to the overall charm of the album. Because charming is what it is, as Hanoi Janes have packed 'Year of Panic' with some real gems. 'Summer of Panic' offers something tinted with psychedelic sounds; 'Our Lives' could have been an early track by The Strokes had they been influenced by the Californian sun rather than the New York shadows; 'Good Bone' is a track which can only be performed if there are several oversized surf-boards nearby. 'Year of Panic' is lo-fi, scuzzy garage surf-pop at its finest and it deserves to be the sound-track of your summer" -BOWLEGS, UK

Inspired by Bollywood, a trip to Morocco, and SergeGainsbourg, Angelo Spencer's second full-length WorldGarage [KLP235] brings armloads of new instruments and theflavor of exotic locations to a compilation of songs that amount to more than just an album, but an experience of wildness. Hearing Spencer transition from English to French, from guitar to hand percussion, and from soft singing to autotuned screaming, it's easy to close your eyes and imagine that you're running barefoot through the soft grass of, somewhere. Somewhere else. Backed by local musicians Ben Kapp, Karl Blau, Clyde Petersen, with guest vocals by Rebecca Redman (from the band Watercolor paintings), World Garage began as a bundle of unfinished songs that Spencer played for everyone, along with a mixtape of Algerian, Moroccan, and Bollywood selections meant to serve as inspiration for how he wanted the finished album to sound; from the sounds of it, it did the trick.

Dear Reader, About a year or two ago, Naomi Yang (of Galaxie 500) reached out to me after she rediscovered a video that we had made together in 2011, during the making of Tramp, just before the album's release. It was for the song Serpents. The timing was uncanny, approaching the anniversary of Tramp. Thinking about my time in New York while in the bubble of Los Angeles and my home. Thinking about how restless I was, and now settled down and stable. Thinking about how Aaron Dessner took a chance on me after I messaged him with a fury of demos. He could see through the hiss and crappy vocals on my GarageBand demos, and that I had something to say. He gave me the confidence to be loud and to scream my rage and feel founded and justified in my own pain. He gave me more tools to find catharsis in my work. I have carried that with me ever since. Being on the west coast the last two years, I look back on my community in New York and am forever grateful. I had so many friends and peers step up and help me unfold these demos. The album that it became. Doug Keith and Ben Lord from my original touring band, Logan Cole, Peter Silberman from The Antlers, Jessica Larrabee from She Keeps Bees, Thomas Bartlett of Doveman, Rob Moose of yMusic, Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, Julianna Barwick, Zach Condon of Beirut, Matt Barrick (of the Walkmen), Clarice Jensen, Ben Lanz, Bryce Dessner, and Bryan Devendorf (of The National). I had almost forgotten about a song titled This Is Too Right that didn't make it onto the record. It was one of the first guitar "riffs" I had ever written and Jenn Wasner sang on it with me. A song about not believing how good I had it, like the other shoe was about to drop. I hope everyone that helped make this record and supported it, feel the love and admiration that I continue to hold for all of you. I hope that in sharing this record again, with a new video and this forgotten track, that new listeners are brought into this album and find meaning and relevance in it today. All of the musicians on this album helped me come to life and perform in ways I never had before. May these songs find you well. Sending all my love, Sharon.

They did it again! The french ambassadors of the yéyé beat return with their third album "Quelque chose comme ça"! So, are you ready for an amazing 60's dance party? Well, don't forget to bring this platter to the DJ! LES TERRIBLES deliver an incredible mix of 60's garage-punk & big-beat shouters and give all of you Beatkeller-dwellers an excuse to dust off your winklepickers and give your mojo a workout! The band that includes members of THE NO TALENTS, LES SYNAPSES, DUTRONC, CECILIA UND DIE SAUERKRAUTS & OPERATION S goes back to the sound of the French Beat & Roll when it was bitten by the Big Bad British Bug back in 1965. Imagine how THEM, THE SMALL FACES, THE YARDBIRDS or the early STONES would've sound if they were from France, never turned professionals and Van Morrison, Keith Relf or Mike Jagger were chicks. All the songs are in French, with that glamorous 'mademoiselle' accent! The band could've been described best as the great french sixties rock band that should have existed but never did. Owing to cultural impediments and lame business practices, there were very few outstanding french rockers from that period. Ronnie Bird, Larry Greco, and a dozen others you've never heard of: LES TERRIBLES cover them all, and every song makes you wanna dance. The band rounds out their set with some originals, as well as their own french versions of some great foreign songs that never got adapted before, all done with a perfect ear for the style. Fronted by the charming and talented chanteuse Rudie this hard-working orchestre delivers the groove that gets the dance floor moving to the Swim, the Jerk, and the Hully-Gully. Les Terribles are sur scene ! ((Jon Dragueur). A Top 10 forever-must have this one is. What more can we tell you?

Both of these dancing tunes were written by Thee Outlets, recorded at the Yeah!Yeah!Yeah! studios in Hamburg and come in a beautiful sleeve created by star illustrator Jean-François Martin in person! Between garage-punk and electro trash. Crash Crash Normal is a duo. These guys drop their sound of rusty nails that hit the audience like rain. Echos and reverbs fight, the drum machine gets killed by the fuzz pedal. Low frequencies slither around you like a snake. No bassplayer. Only two guitars to fill the space left in the room. Real drums win the battle over drum machines at the end. Debut single from French 3-piece electronic garage band, THE JIMI BEN BAND. Based in Lille, France, they came to Damaged Goods' attention having played with Thee Spivs. Damaged Goods strongly suggests you YouTube the video to experience the fullmajesty and psychedelic majesty of the band. Once upon a time, Jimi Ben found himself lost in the jungle. He had been wandering in South East Asia for years and could find no way out. One night he was cruising for dirt and love, he got struck by sexedelic visions emerging from the red lights of go-go bars. An inner baboon voice told him: "Jimi ! Bad is good for you. Why don't you set up a Rock'N'Roll band ?". That's exactlywhat he did. Back in his hometown (Stockton, Northern France), he was taught by long time friend Ricky Love how to play powe...

Disregarding the seriously somber moments, he replaces them with whimsical and youthful spontaneity, whilst retaining the endearing and subtle commentaries that exude his familiarity. Promptly after leaving his Edmonton garage for Vancouver he embarked on a North American tour accompanying fellow Canadians Japandroids on a grand voyage of enlightenment and alcoholic debauchery. DeMarco's a weird cat cultivating an affinity for occult imagery, nudity and social satire. But his most impressive trait is his undeniable and instinctual ability to compose magical pop jangles, of which he'll likely refer to as "jizz jazz". His dusted jams have garnished him accolades that are as ever-increasing as his song writing abilities; his sound rendering comparisons, but in a nomadic fashion alluding no distinct origin. DeMarco's debut solo EP entitled "Rock And Roll Night Club" will ramble into the great unknown guided by Captured Tracks, DeMarco's inner Elvis a tow.

Since its beginning, The Feeling Of Love evolved from a one-man-band playing minimal and nihiliste garage blues with a no wave borrowing, to a trio still in the garage vibe but with more complexity and stronge krautrock and psychelic influences. The band, mostly based in Metz (France), comes from the mind of Guillaume Marietta, who was joined by Seb Normal and Sebastien Joly for their first studio album released through Born Bad Records in april 2011. Dissolve Me (also released on Kill Shaman Records in USA) is the band's kraut space garage manifesto. Songs stretch out, the drums go more tribal, the synth hammers out his keys on an infinite highway, and the guitar gets lost in delay pedal's fog. One thinks Suicide, Spacemen 3, The Velvet Underground, Can, Syd Barrett. After countless shows all over Europe and two tours in U.S.A., sharing the stage with bands such as Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, White Fence, The Intelligence, Girls, Strange Boys etc., The Feeling Of Love will release early 2013 a new album titled Reward Your Grace. Even if the songs keep their psychedelic and melancolic garage essence, the band re-think their music by exploring shoegaze and pop territories. Reward Your Grace is a much more light full records, more accomplish but never steady. Something between psyche pop balades and long sound tracks of trance disturbed by sonic blasts.

Folk rock / power pop band THE Summer Suns formed in Perth, Western Australia in 1986 as one off project to release Kim Williams’ songs “Honeypearl” & “Rachel Anne”. The popularity of the single saw The Summer Suns become a more permanent fixture in the Perth scene, 1986 – 1996, releasing records on most of the world’s best indie labels including Easter, Waterfront, Bus Stop, Parasol, Spring & Get Hip.

Although plying his songwriting trade in other bands and other genres, Williams never entirely gave up on his love for melodic music. After some time playing sadcore then garage rock he formed THE Love Letters with Katherine Browne, playing music very much like The Summer Suns unplugged.

In 2013 with a stockpile of tunes he began working simultaneously on a new Summer Suns album and a Love Letters album with different versions of some songs to appear on both records. With Williams playing most of the instruments and producing the recordings, time took its toll. Katherine Browne quit to concentrate on her real career leaving Williams to decide what to do with the two projects. With about 30 recordings to choose from he decided to edit it down to a single project under THE Summer Suns banner. Thus Eulalie was born & self released in a limited vinyl edition of 100 copies, each numbered and with a unique vinyl colour and photo taken by Kim. With literally no publicity at all the album quickly sold out.

With demand for this now impossible to find folk rock / power pop LP increasing over the years, Hanky Panky Records is set to reissue it in a limited edition of 250 copies with improved detailed cover and 2 bonus tracks!
