In the past 7 years Guppy has evolved from their In the Garage EP origins, releasing 2 albums - In Heat and their most recent album Big Man Says Slappydoo. Joined in the last 2 years by their newest member Kabir Kumar (Sun Kin) on lead guitar and backing vocals, the band has expanded their musicality, moving beyond their garage punk origins into the realms of power pop, disco, country, and surf rock. With this latest evolution of Guppy comes their most ambitious record yet Something is Happening… Guppy again teamed up with Slappydoo producer Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties / boygenius) for their third album ‘Something is Happening…,’ recorded at Elliott Smith’s old studio New Monkey in Van Nuys. The songs on this album are Guppy’s most collaborative e ort yet made up of equal contributions from all four members. The result is a sonic hero’s journey venturing from ambient wistfulness, to post punk irreverence, to sincere indie crooning, to playful garage rock, and returning back again to the beginning, but this time you’re changed. The themes of Something is Happening speak to a feeling of overall hopelessness born from the realization that the system is not here to protect us and an accompanying emergence of hope as we invest in and lean on our communities. Guppy rejects nihilism, relishes in absurdism, and ultimately agrees with poet Khalil Gibran that “the deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain”. The album is made up of observations about absurd speci cs that either want to kill us or celebrate us and sometimes Guppy can’t di erentiate between the two: “Why does it smell like scrambled eggs when I’m driving on the freeway? It's already hard to describe what Deerhoof sounds like. So we'll skip that part and say this sounds a lot like Deerhoof with a different singer. And in keeping with 30-year Hoofian tradition, melodies soar, big hit earwigs abound, harmonies are complex, and keys change frequently and unexpectedly. Arrangements are in a constant state of impatient agitation. Emotions run high but delivery is usually a falsetto deadpan. We Sang, Therefore We Were is grief delivered in code.Greg plays everything save for a few birds who join in singing now and again. He keeps the instrumentarium severely limited, the sound shambling and anti-slick. It turns out Greg is a really good bass player and guitar player, if a bit more rudimentary and slicing compared to his Deerhoof bandmates. He does play more angry guitar solos.But don't expect another Chippendale/Saunier speed-drum freakout; the songwriting is gorgeous and sophisticated, and drums are almost an afterthought. Here, song is Queen. The singing is high and whispery, tending towards the three-part harmony. What we're saying is: We Sang, Therefore We Were sounds a bit like Deerhoof fronted by The Andrews Sisters.This is a peek inside the mind of one of indie rock's most celebrated drummers, many of whose fans may not even realize the relentlessness of his musicianship and compositional prolificacy. NZ power poppers Best Bets present their second full-length album The Hollow Husk of Feeling. Recorded in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand from late 2023 to early 2024, their sophomore album comes from a spiritual place that will be familiar to those who have absorbed the lyrics of Olly Crawford Ellis and James Harding through their work in Best Bets, and garage punks Transistors. The musical palette is expanded this time through the addition of songs penned by primary bass player Joe Sampson (Salad Boys, T54)—who also recorded, mixed and mastered the album in his signature style. But where Best Bets’ first album On An Unhistoric Night was a kaleidoscopic jaunt that intertwined obscure references with musings on life, their second album places at the forefront a feeling one suspects many know well. Sure, it wouldn’t be a Best Bets album without nods to things like Australian reality television of the early 90s, Mortal Kombat (1995), apocalyptic novels, Seinfeld, and automotive history. Even so, there’s an undeniable feeling permeating the album that a threshold has been crossed – be that out in the world, or perhaps even closer to home. The hardest working band in punk rock, The Fleshtones, return with "Festa di Frankenstein" and "The Dedication Song," two anthemic tunes done in the band's inimitable "Super Rock" style that they've been championing since 1976. "The Dedication Song" was originally a hit by the great Freddy Cannon back in 1966, whereas the Fleshtones' brand new rendition serves as a sequel to their smash hit "American Beat" that put them on the map over four decades ago. "Festa di Frankenstein" is a reworking of the under-appreciated Halloween track "Frankenstein's Party" by the Swinging Phillies from 1967. While the original recording is a soulful horn-filled tune, the Fleshtones' version is a far grittier recording that will be a staple of all garage rock Halloween hootenannies to come. "Jeff Goldblum takes a deep breath and initiates the teleportation sequence, unaware that lurking in the corner of the telepod are three greasy eighth grade boys quoting their favorite lines from Kids In The Hall sketches. The sequence initiates; a crack of static; a horrible flash of white hot light. Dramatically backlit and shrouded in fog, what emerges from the adjacent telepod is not so much man-child as teenage lobotomy. The camera jumps to a tight shot on the receding hairlines of three dumb assholes: “Look out world…” they whisper with an off-putting wink into the camera. “I’m eatin’ Arby’s.”

This is the Citric Dummies and that is a reference to their song lyrics! Yes, you do not have to ask: this shit is dumb. Lyrics like “I'm driving a piece of shit because I am a piece of shit” dumb. I hear fear in their voices: this is both a reference to Lee Ving’s phlegm and the fact this band is naked and lost in a parking garage, “A traffic cone used for modesty (It’s not a giant orange dick, you see)”. But unlike Fear, this band does not hate you, for they are too busy hating themselves. “Fuck you!” you yell at them, and they know why.

When you see these Citric Dummies (and oh, you simply must!), you will notice their jackets—matching in satin, unique in color. A bassist in green satin, like a lime, and bald (not unlike a lime…). Guitarist? In lemon yellow; he has a regular amount of hair. And that drummer on the drums, the one with the most hair of all? Orange! What we have here is a band who visually tastes like an orange 7Up if such a dumb thing were a thing.

And this band plays: fast! Fuck! Live, it’s fast-as-fuck-oh-fuck-this-is-fast. Dean Dirg is there playing fast, and The Hives, because we love the Hives and know their roots are of the same raw Swedish garage milieu as the Hellacopters and Henry Fiat's Open Sore. “It’s too rock ‘n roll for hardcore, too hardcore for rock ‘n roll,” you may say (because you yourself may be dumb). Is this what is called…punk? Yes! That’s it! Maybe this is punk, you dumbass.

Oh no! I’ve forgotten the best part of all! You don’t have to just read about the Citric Dummies, you can hear the Citric Dummies. Rocket Science! – The Flaming Sideburns to release rarities collection in November

Garage rock cornerstone The Flaming Sideburns will release a unique compilation of their early material in November. The carefully curated collection, put together by the band and Svart Records, features a total of 13 studio recordings from 1996–1999, three of which are previously unreleased, while the rest appeared on sold-out limited releases around the turn of the millennium.

The team behind the compilation, titled Rocket Science, is familiar to those who know the band: the cover art was created by the band's early guitarist Vilunki 3000 and the mastering was done by the band's trusted producer Jürgen Hendlmeier. Some of the material on the compilation album hits the moment when the band was at the most significant juncture in its career.

"Musically, Rocket Science tells the story of the moment when the band's long-dreamed-of US tour finally came true in 1999 and The Flaming Sideburns made it to New York for a recording session before returning to Finland. While on tour, we had verbally signed a record deal with Bad Afro in Bellingham at the Garageshock festival. As a result, our first 'official' album It's Time To Testify...Brothers & Sisters was released at the end of the same year, and so the band's story really began when Rocket Science's time was over," explains the band's singer Eduardo Martinez, contextualizing the importance of the upcoming release as a kind of watershed moment in the band's history.

Founded in 1995, The Flaming Sideburns had already toured both sides of the Atlantic before the turn of the millennium, well before the garage rock boom of the early 2000s kicked in with hundreds of new bands. During its active years, the band has released three compilation albums and four studio albums, the latest of which, Silver Flames, was released by Svart Records in 2021. The band is currently on a creative hiatus and will announce its plans next year.

The Flaming Sideburns' compilation album Rocket Science – Original Artyfacts from The Psychedelic Era 1996–1999 will be released on November 1, 2024.

Since 2018, Vancouver BC’s jangle-pop meets riot-twee trio WUT have been making a local name for themselves with their joyfully heartfelt live performances. In 2020, the trio released NOW, an energetic cassette accompanied by 10 DIY music videos. These earnest and often humorous videos reflect WUT’s playful yet sincere songwriting. Recently, WUT recorded Mingling With The Thorns, their sophomore full-length album. Mingling With The Thorns was created during two years of intermittent quarantines which caused guitarist Kaity McWhinney (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), bassist Tracey Vath (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), and drummer Lauren Smith (Tough Age / Jock Tears), to write songs independently, and share their ideas through countless emails, dropbox folders, and google drives. Long periods of isolation were consumed by experimentation with different arrangements, and often an idea would be re-worked over and over (and over) again. This resulted in a collection of carefully crafted pop songs that reflect the bands mutual love for c86 jangle pop and early Flying Nun Records bands. McWhinney’s longtime friend and musical collaborator, Christina Riley (Artsick, / Burnt Palms) joins WUT on the track “Your Feelings”, which pushes the band into the realms of garage rock with her raw and frenetic lead guitar. On a surface level, Mingling With The Thorns may seem fun and carefree. However, a dig deeper into the album’s lyrical content draws up themes that grapple with patriarchy and late stage capitalism; specifically the struggle to find personal autonomy within these social systems.

Sunset Rubdown are set to release their fourth studio album_the first in fifteen years!_Always Happy To Explode.Twenty years ago Spencer Krug began using the name Sunset Rubdown for his solo bedroom recordings, experiments too low-fi and odd for what was then a blossoming Wolf Parade, but by 2005 Sunset Rubdown had evolved into a full band, with Michael Doerksen, Jordan Robson-Cramer, and Camilla Wynne joining Krug on stage and in the studio. The band recorded their third critically-acclaimed album, Dragon Slayer, in Chicago in 2008, then went on to play their last show in Tokyo in 2009, with the implicit knowledge it was their last. They broke up quietly, their certitude that they'd never reunite growing as the years rolled on. Then one night more than a dozen years after their final show Krug had a dream (he really did) that the band reunited, and the first thing he did upon awakening was email the band to see if the dream might be made real. The answer was a resounding yes, and soon enough Sunset Rubdown was onstage again. The first show in fourteen years was in Montreal, where they had formed so long ago. The tour was a success, most crucially in terms of having fun, the main condition of their continued pursuits. This fun was thanks in no small part to their blithesome new member, bassist Nicholas Merz. And thus they decided to make a new album together.The record is composed of nine songs cherry-picked from demos that Krug has been posting to his Patreon page over recent years, with the songs in many cases being pared down from their previous incarnations, yet no less lush. Being a band is no easy feat, perhaps especially as members age and spread across the continent, but it certainly is a privilege. With Always Happy to Explode, Sunset Rubdown have made something that captures their gratitude and the energy of their joyous (and sometimes difficult) reunion.

“Turns the Colour of Bad Shit” will be Jake Robertson’s seventh solo record under the extremely vast and evolving umbrella that is Alien Nosejob. On September 20 Anti Fade Records (au), Total Punk (us) & DrunkenSailor (uk) join forces to split the shit pie into three different shades ofBad Shit and feed the 5000 hungry fans across the globe.

Taking musical inspiration from the late 70’s punk sounds of J.T. IV, Elton Motello, X-Ray Spex, ‘Bad Shit' came to life in April 2023 when Jake occupied friends’ Mikey and Raven’s home studio for a weekend and took to the controls on his own.

The album opens with the gut-wrenching terror that is 'Bird Strike’. A song made up of a hypnotic riff, haunting saxophone line (courtesy of Alannah Sawyer) and grotesque lyrical imagery that parallels Revee Bendixen's mutilated album artwork. 'Trapped in Time' lightens the mood with an upbeat tempo and words that poke fun at those stuck living in the past, while 'Annoying Riffs' points the finger at almost all of society (including himself). Jake reminds us that he can most certainly play a guitar solo (In case anyone forgot the Stained Glass record) on 'The Ostrich’ before the blistering 24 minutes wraps up with ‘Medical Treatment’; a 3 minute, minor chord Birdman worship. This record has a little something for everybody.
