"Overlorde was founded as an original act with the goal of obtaining a record contract. We always felt our music belonged on a bigger stage as opposed to the clubs of New Jersey and New York. Fortunately, the NJ metal scene was one of the most vibrant in the world though we didn't necessarily realize it at the time. Outsiders are one of the first punk bands from Orange County, California from the beach city of Huntington Beach. This was the first punk band for Frank Ruffino, founder/guitar for China White. Other members also went on to start bands such as the Blades and play in bands such as JFA. Outsiders have a unique sound similar to China White, reminiscent of the faster Black Sabbath songs combined with the guitar drive of the Sex Pistols. This LP contains their entire 1979 studio demo and some reunion studio recordings of more original songs from 2009. All tracks feature Frank Ruffino on guitar. Outerwear were a more primitive, less ambitious offshoot of Cleveland's Spike in Vain, which means the rhythm section was so crappy that simple songs were a necessity and they took an inordinate amount of pride in just badly they sucked. In fact, sucking was so much the point that once the band had become "kind of good," they mummified themselves in gauze at their final shows so their hands couldn't function nor could they see their instruments. This, along with painfully long versions of their slowest songs were enough to drive more than 200+ audience members from a hall show when opening for Social Unrest. Perhaps Outerwear's finest moment, aside from the day they were somehow allowed into a recording studio to record their 1983 cassette album, The Outerwear Limits, which against all odds, is fairly compelling. Given that Chris Marec of Spike in Vain sang, played guitar, and wrote all the songs, there's six string insanity in spades, and the morbid tales of amateur coroners and being buried alive somehow contain genuine hooks. Yes, you will find yourself singing along to "Bloody Toilet Paper," banging your head to "Fountain of Scuz," and then scratching it as you puzzle through the backwards guitar and trombone of "Piss II." But wait, there's more! Power tools! Tuba! Cello solos! Or how about the absolute worst version of the Ohio Players' "Fire" ever recorded by man? Amateur home lobotomy may become an attractive new hobby, because you'll want to remove the parts of your brain that might remember this track. That, or listen to their cover of the Doors' "The End," which could do the job on its own (and doesn't include any of the actual music from the song). These are just a few among the many torturous pleasures the listener will "enjoy" on a great aural adventure, as they experience the awe and mystery of The Outerwear Limits.

Who wouldn’t want a break from planet earth after the past few years we’ve all had? Kenneth Close and Tracy Wilson have built themselves a new universe in the form of a home recording studio to transport themselves a galaxy away from the grief, fear, and worry the pandemic brought. The duo dubbed themselves Outer World and they blasted off into an entirely new to them corner of the musical universe to create their debut album Who Does The Music Love? Covid moved into Wilson’s lungs in February of 2020 and overstayed its welcome. It stole what she describes as “her big voice”. For those familiar with her previous bands Dahlia Seed or Positive NO, her trademark, no need for a microphone belt, was gone for good. The couple grieved for the literal loss of a primary instrument used in their art, but were determined to find a way back to making music again. Together, they began exploring the world of songwriting using a computer, samples, synths, and plug-ins. The goal was to create a new musical landscape where Tracy could find a new voice that wasn’t as focused on power, but still potent nonetheless. The next two years were spent wrestling with long Covid and finding ways to work around each new frustrating lingering side effect. Close and Wilson had spent the previous decade creating technicolor post-punk pop as the band Positive No. Their final cinematic album Kyanite dabbled with electronic sounds and hints that had they remained active through the past three years, their indie rock genre banner would have been torn down to make way for something more free adventurous. Their current home studio sits in the center of what they lovingly call the record womb, a computer surrounded by some 7,000 records and all their instruments/ recording gear. Tucked into the layers of Who Does The Music Love? is a century of recorded music from all over the world. We find the dynamic swing of a Swedish soul jazz singer on top of Bond worthy spy themes. We hear the sensuality of France in the ‘60s when in swaggers a wink to ‘90s house music. There is a tug-o-war between a ‘70s angular post punk and experimental Brazilian psych. Cosmic Jazz, noisecore, freakbeat breaks, space age bachelor pad Moog mayhem, and the treatment of the iconic retro-future group Broadcast as a genre and chosen family. This diverse blend is just some of Outer World’s psychedelic garage pop points of inspiration. It is music to make any crate digger's heart skip a beat. It would be tempting to call Outer World a pandemic project or assume their debut record carries the emotional weight of terrible times, but you would be wrong on both counts. Outer World is a band nearly 15 years in the making and Who Does The Music Love? is a blissful rainbow wrapped up in a giant silver lining bow. Problem solving around a tragedy has never sounded so curiously enthralling.

Oumou Sangaré releases acoustic album, 'Acoustic', on No Format. Re-imagining her much-praised 2017 release 'Mogoya' totally unplugged, in live sessions recorded over just two days, 'Acoustic' is the final chapter in a trio of related projects, following 2018's 'Mogoya Re-mixed' edition, which saw Sangaré's compositions retooled by high-profile fans including Sampha, Spoek Mathambo and St Germain.'Acoustic' consolidates Sangaré's position as Mali's leading opinion-maker, established with her 250,000-selling 1989 debut Moussolou, which did much for the feminist cause in West Africa. Oumou's capacity to confront suffering whilst preserving her connection to Malian values is reflected in two additional tracks added to 'Acoustic'. 'Saa Magni', which laments the passing of Amadou Ba Guindo (member of the Orchestre National Badema), and 'Diaraby Nene' (lifted from Mous-solou) in which Sangaré's lyrics dared to detail her first physical encounters.The release of 'Mogoya' in 2017 signalled the return of Oumou Sangaré after 8 years, during which she had been managing her numerous businesses (including agriculture & pisciculture). With that album, the woman who'd swapped selling water on the streets of Bamako for global stardom reconnected with her audience. Balancing the traditional music of Wassoulou and a forwards-facing curiosity, Malian instruments were augmented by electric guitar, bass and synths, with Tony Allen on drums. Oumou was painted by Congolese artist JP Mika for the front cover, and more recently sampled by Beyoncé (who used 'Diaraby Nene' without permission on 'mood 4 Eva'). Never before had Sangaré appeared so far removed from her home country - it's a dynamic that 'Acoustic' redresses, with Oumou embodying the same freedom & audacity of her debut, 30 years ago. Four-piece post-punk group Ought has been gathering momentum the old-fashioned way, with a humble and deceptively unassuming debut album that's been worming its way into many many ears thanks to its combination of intelligence, authenticity, directness, simplicity and energy; and with live performances in which the band's channeling of genuine passion, politics and charisma are consistently connecting with and exuberantly galvanizing audiences.

Released in April 2014, More Than Any Other Day was showered with accolades. Since then the band has been mostly on the road, racking up tour dates and ramping up the attack on their existing songbook. Discussion of a tour-only release that would grab a couple of the band's self-recorded early tunes and commit them to vinyl shifted by the end of spring towards a realization that Ought might update this material to reflect how the songs have evolved on stage and in concert. An intense weekend session at Montréal's Hotel2Tango in June 2014 yielded new recordings of two early pieces, "Pill" and "New Calm Pt. 2" (the self-recorded 2012 versions of which remain available on Ought's Bandcamp) along with the brand new, more experimental and largely instrumental "New Calm Pt. 3". “This album [sorcs 80] was a self imposed ambitious project for us [osees]. Something to kick in the creative flow. The last few years, having been a challenging time in general, felt like a good time for a pivot. The last two albums were so guitar and keyboard centric, I wanted a weird and fun set of parameters for us to work with. I demo’d everything at home on cassette four track (harkening back to simpler times) using drum loops, and just had at it ’til I had a pile of ‘songs.’

“Tom [Dolas] and I chose one sound each using synths and created a range of three octaves of that sample, then loaded them into Roland Spd-sx samplers and learned the transcribed songs using drum sticks. The idea was to change the way we wrote and to have four people along the front of the stage essentially playing percussion. So no guitar, no keys.

“As we were recording I kept thinking how the sounds, when paired up, sounded a bit like brass. So, we added a saxophone horn section to round out the horniness of the sound with a bit of reedy bell tones. Thanks to Cansfis Foote and Brad Caulkins on tenor and baritone saxophones.

“Sort of a Dexy’s Midnight Runners meets Von LMO meets The Flesh Eaters meets the Screamers kinda punk junk. Poppy and hooky, heavy at times. Sort of vacuous and maybe a bit sci-fi in sound. Boneheaded in riff and heady in lyrics. Recorded at Stu-Stu-Studio by me on eight track 1/4-inch tape. So pretty hot and raw. Lots to write about today. A lot of these lyrics were taken from things people said in passing about taking on life right now that stuck with me. Things that made me reflect. Things that made me laugh. Things that made me WTF. Some folks are kind, genuine and give you love and energy. Some are greedy manipulative ghouls who hang off your veins. You must be strong, composed and take care of yourself. Be self aware and check your mind for cracks. Learn to relax and be well. There are moments of beauty and redemption. It’s not all bad news and there’s always hope. Ready for take-off: Brazilian psychedelic quartet Os Barbapapas will release their first record DooWooDooWoo on 30rd April. Berlin-based record label Fun In The Church celebrates an LP release perfectly in line with their motto “Outernational Music For Interplanetary People”: DooWooDooWoo by Os Barbapapas will be the international debut of a highly talented band straight from the hip psychedelic scene in São. São Paulo meets Berlin – contemporary interplanetary diplomacy at its best. The result is a wondrous trip propelling us into outer space, to a lyrically unmanned space station where instrumental needles pierce the membrane of our planetary horizon, making way for a holistic psychedelic experience of our world.
Our tour guides are Barbara Mucciollo (Drums, Percussion), Selva
Rubens (Electric Guitar), Fernando Lima (Percussion, Drums) and Tomás Oliveira (Glass Harp, Bass), who is also responsible for production and mix. In times like these, producing a record like DooWooDooWoo is not a trivial thing at all, especially in Brazil, where Covid struck hard. The four artists had to improvise: since the initial plan to record an album in a studio was made impossible, the already drafted songs where postponed in favor of a new concept. Everyone recorded ideas for themselves, to which the others would contribute their tracks later, eventually building the 13 track-long interstellar journey that is the album. Collective improvisation chronologically untangled.
Though DooWooDooWoo was created in physical distance, the LP still became a 25-minute-long monument to the extraordinary vibe of the band. Its unpretentious and playful sound can only originate from the natural bond of those who speak the same musical language. And while listening to the first bars of the album and asking oneself if this could also be The Residents or Hermeto Pascoal producing Khruangbin’s next record, one has already been befallen by the spell of the four Brazilian mages. At the very latest, the third song “Sanga” will draw in even the most reluctant sceptic, when Selva Rubens sounds his self-made pot guitar. Welcome to the desert jungle.
Here, Tropicália meets exotica. Space meets desert. Surf meets western. The evoked visions maintain their wonder throughout the whole album, supported by the varied rhythms of the two drummers Mucciollo and Lima, who alternate skillfully between funky grooves, electronic sounds and classic percussion patterns, awarding the album a continuous flow. Brought together with Oliveira’s science-fiction sounds produced by his Glass Harp and the absence of vocals, they unfold a hypnotizing force that seems to slow down time. This unique sound is glued together by Selva Rubens’ guitar, always present with twangy melodies and reverberating harmonies. That way, Os Barbapapas weave us a sound that could only have been created in the cultural melting pot that is São Paulo. All the more exciting that Fun In The Church will deliver us that sound on vinyl.
The recording process has been a lifeline to the four Brazilians in Covid-induced isolation. Tomás Oliveira writes: “It’s been a great source of good mental health and daydreams”. This feeling perforates the music. And sounds truly outernational!

Orthodox was born as a trio in Seville, Spain at the end of 2004. Starting from doom metal and absorbing influences from drone, jazz, and extreme metal, the band represents one of the most relevant but unpredictable bands of the Spanish metal underground. After breaking through the international underground with their Gran Poder debut LP in 2006, Orthodox has released another six studio albums, multiple EPs, splits, singles, and more, released through respected labels like Southern Lord, Utech Records, God Unknown, and long-running allies, Alone Records. Since 2014, Orthodox has operated as a duo, with bassist/vocalist Marco Serrato and drummer Borja Díaz handling all recording and live performances. However, Proceed sees the return of guitarist Ricardo Jiménez to the lineup for the first time since 2011’s Baal. To capture this mammoth album, in November 2021, Billy Anderson (Sleep, Melvins, High On Fire, Om, Neurosis, EyeHateGod) was flown to La Mina Studios in Sevilla, Spain, and recorded the album with assistant engineers Raúl Pérez and Nacho García. Anderson mixed the record at his Everything Hz back in Portland, Oregon, after which it was sent to Justin Weiss at Trakworx in San Francisco, California for mastering. Proceed was completed with artwork and illustrations by Fernando Rivas and layout/design by José Postigo. Proceed represents Orthodox's return to its original essence, but also a step forward as a band. After a multitude of different projects around the band and a long way traveled, they are back to reel off heavy riffs like a three-headed juggernaut. Orthodox has performed at international festivals such as Hellfest, Roadburn, Supersonic, Amplifest, Primavera Sound, and many others, has collaborated with artists as diverse as Julian Cope and flamenco dancer Israel Galván, and has opened for Voïvod, High On Fire, Corrosion Of Conformity, and countless more.

Remixed and remastered reissue of the legendary Orquesta DEL Desierto sophomore album. Unable to tour as a group due to commitments to other projects but fueled by the success of the debut release, Brown immediately turned to booking another recording session for the band. Hoping to further expand the group’s dynamic sound, Brown and Stahl solicited song contributions from Mike Riley and Country Mark Engel for the second album. While the core of Brown, Stahl, Riley, Engel and Lalli remained intact for the second session, the group’s diverse approach benefitted from the addition of drummer Adam Maples (earthlings?) and percussionist/drummer Pete Davidson. Additionally, the group was joined at famed Joshua Tree studio Rancho de la Luna by pianist Tim Jones and Bill Barrett on trumpet. Released in 2003, Dos was immediately embraced as a “. . . compelling fusion of Latin stylings and psychedelic-tinged blues that is a real alternative these days” (cosmiclava.com). Bolstered by similar acknowledgements and reviews of their second album, Orquesta del Desierto committed to a series of performances throughout southern California and a European tour in 2004. Joined by drummer Bryan Brown, these shows have become legendary among the fans who were able to attend the band’s only active period of live performances.

Orphan Egg were a short lived group who were formed in 1967 in San Jose California. Their sole self-titled album was released in 1968 on the small independent company Carole Records. Essentially a garage-psych album – in the tradition of future iconic compilation like Nuggets or Pebbles – Orphan Egg was recorded by a bunch of students at Saratoga High School in Saratoga. Occasionally they won the Vox Battle of the Bands, a nationwide competition. They also appeared on the soundtrack of the classic bike-movie ‘Cycle Savages’ with 3 tracks.

Øresund Space Collective (øsc), formed in 2004, is a totally improvising Scandinavian space rock band and has been releasing albums since 2006. The band has played concerts & festivals all over Europe. Their music is quite diverse and influenced by the ever-changing line up in the collective. The music on this album was recorded during the October 2008 sessions that gave us the “Dead Man In Space” & “Slip Into The Vortex” releases. “Sleeping With The Sunworm” is a 56 minutes space rock jam (originally released on CD in 2011), which is split into three parts for ease of play. It starts very slow heavy and spacey with a massive sound, before the track heads into new directions with some beautiful guitar. An up-tempo section develops after ca. 15 minutes and features some intense guitar & synthesizer interaction. Due to an out of tune synthesizer, a new synthesizer section was overdubbed by Mogens. Magnus also replaced one of his guitar sections but other than these two small sections it is a completely improvised piece of music. Now, after a bit more of 10 years it is finally out on vinyl ! As an added bonus (on vinyl only), a jam from the same sessions, which we had some technical issues (the guitar tracks were missing after the first couple of minutes), has been resurrected and Greg Kozlowski (Architectural Metaphor) was kind enough to make a series of synth and guitar overdubs. This track is called “Awaken”. This was mixed by Dr Space.

Let"s get real, real Ghosted again.Oren Ambarchi has been collaborating with the Fire! trio (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin) for over a decade - and both Johan and Andreas played on Oren"s Live Hubris as well. Oren and Johan began music-making together back in the early aughts - but it wasn"t until 2021 that the three of them got together to record music. That became the first Ghosted album. When they were done, it was clear they had founded a new group. A music of sustained tension and deep atmosphere marked by subtle, shifting dynamics, Ghosted was released in May of 2022 to psyched response everywhere; the trio embarked upon an ongoing series of concert bookings around Europe, with loads of other people in the world still hoping to have the chance to be in the room at the next show. "‘Thieving From the House of God’ was almost a statement of defiance from us. After successful (but gruelling) tours of the US, Japan and Europe to support ‘Coup De Grace’, we lost a guitarist when Pete left to pursue his career in art. This could have spelt the end for the band but if anything, it just made us stronger and I think this album is the perfect combination of the 4 previous records. Being trimmed down to a 4 piece gave Joe the freedom to express himself more as a guitarist and Martyn and Chris both upped their game as well. We worked with Billy Anderson again to create an album that earned great reviews all over the world and established Orange Goblin as part of the UK metal hierarchy (albeit as the black sheep of that hierarchy!)" . First edition on vinyl, remastered tracks and new artwork along with a 12“ size insert, 2x12“ size poster, sticker and DL-Card. Vocalist Chaka Malik and guitarist Chris Traynor met in the New York hardcore band Burn and began playing together as early as 1992. With an early version of Orange 9mm, the duo released a live EP in 1993. The recording earned the 7 band a contract with East West, and after picking up bassist David Gentile and drummer Matthew Cross, Orange 9mm began recording. Driver Not Included was released in 1994, and the band spent time touring with Helmet before signing with Atlantic the following year. Gentile left later in 1995 and was replaced by Taylor McLam just after recording ended for Tragic, with production by Barkmarket's David Sardy. Tragic was released in 1996; it would be three years before Orange 9mm issued a follow-up, which bore the title of Pretend I'm Human.

Orang-Utan were in fact a London based band called Hunter, featuring vocalist Terry "Nobby" Clarke (of psych-pop legends Jason Crest), guitar player Mick Clarke, drummer and songwriter Jeff Seopardi and bass player Paul Roberts. They recorded their sole album in 1971 at DeLane Lea studios. In a bizarre twist of events, their producers / managers ran with the tapes to the US, where they placed the album on Bell Records under a new band name: Orang-Utan, without telling any of the band members. A lost classic of blazing, early hard rock with minor psychedelic hangover vibes, a twin-guitar attack, and waves of fuzz/wah, along with powerful vocals. Think Leaf Hound, Budgie, Bang, Sir Lord Baltimore, Hard Stuff... Legit reissue done in co-operation with the original band members.

In 2020, during the pandemic and second lockdown, the opportunity arose for Oracle Sisters to record their debut album on the island of Hydra. Tourist free, locked down with only fishing boats in the harbour and locals as the backdrop, it proved to be the perfect peaceful place to work.In a studio-converted Old Carpet Factory, 35 songs were written and 20 were recorded, with 11 making the final track listing. The songs reflect the feeling of being suspended in time, locked down in a safe place but aware of the fragility of the moment. "Hydranism" acknowledges the spirit of hedonistic escape inherent on the island while giving a nod to the sage atmosphere it provided to lose oneself in reveries and create unencumbered.The recordings are built on a skeleton of live takes with vocals and acoustic guitars recorded in the kitchen, the drums (Cyprien Jacquet a.k.a Wend¥ Kîll) and bass (Jerome Goldet) in the old furnace room, while the vocals done in the ballroom and the handclaps the shower. The album took on the shape of the Old Carpet Factory, suspended on a steep incline overlooking the Hydra harbour and the distant hills of the Peloponnese. Layering upright and baby grand pianos, with the help of touring band member Reni Lane, they embraced the lofty resonance inherent in the hammered harp; harmonies followed while a sauce simmered on the stove. In style and tradition, the meat and bones of the sound embraces the style of larger than life ballads, intimate folk songs and table thumping rousers, from there to glam rock to the toy sounds you might hear in the neon gaming district of Shibuya, Tokyo. All these sounds reflect the life and travels of the band and their openness to use whatever they encounter on their path.

From 1984 until 1987, Greek artist Costis Drygianakis and a ramshackle assembly of friends and collaborators produced a slew of recordings under the name Optiki Mousiki, or Optical Musics. Their first full-length "Tomos 1" was released in 1987 and documented a prolific early period, combining grizzly industrial noise elements with dizzying electro-acoustic experiments and wild instrumental stings. "Tomos 2" is a collection of work taken from the band's second epoch after a brief hiatus; released in 1994, it arrived after a long period of self-reflection from Drygianakis about not only what his own music represented, but what avant-garde art might be useful for in general. A very different album from its predecessor, it attempts to question popular ideas of taste, folding together "non-serious" musical ideas with traditional elements while tentatively drawing from the spiritual world both near and far, from the lives of the Christian saints to tales of Tibetan Buddhism, Sufism and Hinduism. Drygianakis started the process by recording performances from his collaborators such as Sokratis Sinopoulos, Kostas Tsianos, Dimitris Yiagas, Ross Daly and Konstantinos Karagounis. He had been working as a studio engineer in Larissa but the work had been grueling and the financial side of the business was painful. In contrast, his work as Optical Musics became more passionate and deeply personal, and the creation of the album took on a life of its own as he channeled his melancholy and frustration into four long tracks that melted together his inspirations, impulses and desires. Since the project was primarily electronic, driven by Drygianakis's interest in synthesizers and computers, there needed to be a bridge between the acoustic world and the digital. That came from a revolutionary piece of gear: the legendary Akai S-1000 sampler. This tool allowed Drygianakis to pull sounds from across the musical spectrum and tailor it to his needs, fusing dreamy, far-off sounds with ideas recorded closer to home. The result is an album that neatly pulls creative air from its influences - Tangerine Dream's "Zeit" and Diamanda Galas' "The Divine Punishment", for example - and forms it into defiantly unique sonic clouds that signal towards the East without uprooting themselves from the West. The opening quarter layers ornate strings over a hiccuping electronic rhythm and submerged synthesizers, allowing hypnotic vocals - sung, chanted and spoken - to suggest the album's religious themes without overstating it. On the second segment, Drygianakis reduces his sounds to a whisper, with faint, minimal piano and gentle atmospheres that slowly shift from acoustic to electronic, touching the boundaries of new age music without crossing it. Dense instrumental drones characterize the epic, cinematic third chapter, while the fourth and final section offers us Drygianakis' most crushing treatment, burning religious vocal techniques and Balkan string flourishes into searing noise and dissonant electro-acoustic wails. Listening almost three decades later "Tomos 2" sounds almost prophetic, picking up on themes and concepts that have only become more relevant. By consciously questioning the logic of world music, new age and the avant-garde, Drygianakis managed to formulate a narrative that continues to draw breath with each passing day.
