Released on vinyl for the first time for Record Store Day 2022. 'ghosts OF Rock N Roll' is the fifth solo album from Men They Couldn't Hang frontman Phil Odgers and is preceded by the digital single 'The Serpent, The Maiden and The Bear' which hit #5 in the Official UK Folk Chart in September 2021. Beginning as a collection of ukulele led demos, 'ghosts OF Rock N Roll' has endured a stormy birth and its final emergence represents the triumph of resilience over adversity. Originally funded via Pledge Music, the album was nearly strangled at birth by the collapse of Pledge Music in 2018 and the loss of the majority of fan investment. Despite this setback, all fan pledges were still fulfilled and the project relocated to Bandcamp just in time for the pandemic lockdown to prevent any further recording sessions with producer Jim Knight. Finally, the album inched forward over the summer of 2020 only to crash into the second lockdown and then the tragic loss of fellow Tmtch frontman Stefan Cush in February 2021. With such checkered history, 'ghosts OF Rock N Roll' seems an appropriate title and its combination of folky pop and melancholic twang, combined with an ethos of survival, memory and experience create a testament to a life spent sailing the sometimes treacherous waters of Rock and Roll. The vinyl album features guest appearances by Sid Griffin and Bobby Valentino and two extra tracks not available on the CD version. Sleeve design is by visual artist Aly fell and the vinyl album includes a limited-edition art print pencil drawing of Cush and Swill giving it large on stage at Shepherds Bush Empire.

Devour marks the fourth full-length record from Margaret Chardiet's project Pharmakon and her most intense output to date. Like her previous albums, Devour comes with a strong concept that is exorcised throughout the five demolishing tracks on the album, using imagery and language of self-cannibalism as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans. Each of the five songs echoes a stage of grief associated with this cyclical chamber of self-destruction and the chaos surrounding us that leads us to devour ourselves in an attempt to balance the agony. The album was recorded by Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and is the first Pharmakon album recorded live in studio. The A and B sides were each recorded as a continuous take with vocals from start to finish, marking a totally new process for the artist that allows the ferocity and immediacy of her live performance to resonate throughout. Devour also explores new sonic territory, with denser electronics, groovier hooks, and moments of her most unhinged vocal deliveries to date. As one of the premiere vanguards of modern industrial and power electronics, Chardiet continuously pushes the genres and everyone involved in them, and with the release of Devour, she has once again changed the game. Artist Statement:"Devour" uses self-cannibalization as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans; on cellular, individual, societal and species-wide scales. In our cells, our minds, our politics and our species, humans are self-destructing. But this behavior does not happen in a vacuum. It is an instinctive inward response to a world of increasing outward violence, greed, and oppression. Turning these wounds toward ourselves can be seen as an attempt at "balancing feedback", within a never-ending positive feedback loop of cause and effect. With this view, the blame is placed not within the individual, but with the world they must contend with, and a society that is designed to fail them - to keep them gnashing and wailing, inflicted with an all-devouring hunger that inevitably turns in on the self. Those that pit them against each other grin from the sidelines, bellies full. Those who see beyond the veil need to obscure the horrid sight by any means necessary, but respite is always brief- nothing can dampen the glare from behind the veil. This album is dedicated to all who were lost to their own demise, all who have been institutionalized; whether in prison, psychiatric facilities, or drug rehabilitation. It is for all those ostracized by and isolated from a totality which chews them up alive in a self-cannibalizing caste system. Here, where martyrs, slaves, and pharmakos are not eradicated, but simply called by another name. "ABOUT THE SHALLOWNESS OF SANITY"... To be well adjusted in this system is to be oblivious and unfeeling. This is for the rest of us, who understand that chaos, madness, pain and even self destruction are natural and inevitable responses to an unjust and disgusting world of our own making.

Following the label’s 9 minute sell out of it’s recent Mark E. Smith BBC “football results” lathe cut, Feral Child return with a cracker. A split LP featuring two of mainland Europe’s finest experimental electronic artists, Germans Phantom Horse and Belgiums’ Innercity. 2 side long epics of rich exploratory, kraut tinged Electronica. Phantom Horse offer up “Pink Star”, a side long slowburner (with production by Kohn’s Jurgen de Blonde) built around opening drones and sporadic kosmische themed synth flourishes. We’ll mention Cluster again in a moment, but this has its head pointed firmly towards the legendary work of Moebius and Roedelius. A lovely track, kinda cleaner and more sonically polished than it’s flip, but that juxtaposition increases the records’ appeal here. For these ears, it’s Innercity’s epic “Ali” that steals the show here and is easily worth the proverbial price of admission on this one. A monumental, moody, side long piece of lo-fi drum machine enthused electronica recalling some imaginary dream collision of the very finest Conrad Schnitzler flavoured K/Cluster or first 2 LP Kraftwerk with latter day industrial, electronic pioneers of our own, early Cabs, Clock DVA, Throbbing Gristle, Robert Rental et al. Just magnificent and we don’t say “hike it right up” lightly…. Label head Dom has long had Hans Dens -and his Innercity project- pencilled in for releases on his previous labels Deep Distance and Polytechnic Youth which -for one reason or other- never materialized but their coming together here is exquisite and the track is a monster, my “new” track of the year thus far; talk about it being worth the wait…. A lovely record, in a limited one time pressing on vinyl through North London’s homespun Feral Child label.

Time is supposed to mellow us, but for Petrol Girls it has distilled their feminist politics into an ever more potent cocktail. Fitting, given that their logo from day one has been a flaming molotov. Since their formation in 2012, the band has been known for playing fast-paced, chaotic punk that takes aim at everything from sexual violence to immigration policy, but over the last few years their sound has evolved in a more nuanced direction. Their 2016 debut album Talk of Violence was a blast of pure political rage, while 2019's Cut & Stitch saw vocalist Ren Aldridge exploring familiar themes from a more personal perspective. Now their latest offering, Baby - to be released through the London-based independent label Hassle on June 24th - sees the band turn another new corner. This time, by embracing irreverence. "We wanted [this album] to be less epic and less preachy from day one," Aldridge says. "I hate sanctimoniousness. Like, really fucking hate it. But I also know that I have been mega preachy, and felt very pressured to be sanctimonious, because we've always played in a very political punk scene. I lost my fun side, and I really needed to come back to that." Recorded with Pete Miles at Middle Farm Studios in Devon, Baby embraces a more playful sound. A focus on groove and repetition - driven by guitarist Joe York, drummer Zock and bassist Robin Gatt - give the songs a Talking Heads feel, while retaining the band's formative post-punk energy. The lyrics, too, are a departure for Aldridge. While she continues to address heavy topics like burn out, femicide and police violence, the lyrics balance directed anger with tongue-in-cheek humour where appropriate. Angular opener "Preachers" puts the self-aggrandising nature of call-out culture on blast with lyrics like "feeling dead important in the comments", while lead single "Baby, I Had An Abortion" is intentionally puerile from title to finish. On the flip side, tracks like "Violent By Design" see the band kicking back against carceral feminism in the wake of a news cycle dominated by Black Lives Matter protests and PC Wayne Cousins' brutal murder of Sarah Everard. Similarly, "Fight For Our Lives" - a harsh, borderline industrial song - was lyrically co-written by activist and vocalist Janey Starling. Aldridge deliberately wrote the verses to sound like a manifesto, and the lyrics reference Starling's Dignity For Dead Women Campaign with Level Up, which successfully called for the UK media to change the way it reports on fatal incidents of domestic violence. Baby saw Petrol Girls working in new ways - scrapping entire songs rather than trying to force things that didn't feel right, recording to tape for the first time, and deliberately leaving in imperfections. It was a more carefree process, which Aldridge - having gone through a particularly bad period of mental ill-health at the start of 2021 - welcomed. Between a rehearsal weekend with DIE BENJAMINS, a tour of DIE NERVEN and the first BEATSTEAKS demos, Julian and Thomas spent another day writing and recording two songs. Two bass riffs and 10 minutes of jamming turned into two songs: EREIGNIS and IST ES EINFACHER. The lyrics are concise, ambivalent and come from the heart. The instruments are correspondingly sparse: bass, drums, guitar and synthesizer. Only two DUB versions of the songs for the B side were missing for the dreamed-of maxi single at 45 rpm. SCHLEIFI UND BRAUI aka DJ Schleifstein and Jan Brauer (BRANDT, BRAUER, FRICK) as well as ANDI THOMA (MOUSE ON MARS) gave us the two Dubs for this. The EINFACHA BAUEN Dub by ANDI THOMA contains two PALAIS SCHAUMBURG samples, but you would have figured it out without us.

At long last, a limited vinyl version of this album is about to be released. It comes as 180 gm white vinyl. For the first time ever, Peter has recorded a collection of cover versions. The songs come from a variety of musical worlds: Classical, American Songbook, Italian Pop and Tango. In all but three cases Peter has also translated the songs, from Italian, French and German. As strange a project as this might seem, there's an overall sense of cohesiveness to it and it's absolutely of this time. Two songs have lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein; the music for one is by Jerome Kern, the other by Richard Rodgers. Leiber and Stoller provided lyrics for "I who have nothing', originally an Italian tune. Three Italian songs are at the core of the album, written (and originally performed) by Fabrizio de Andre, Luigi Tenco and Piero Ciampi. The two tango pieces were composed by Astor Piazzolla. Finally, there are two classical songs, respectively by Faure and Mahler. In Peter's own words_. "This collection seems to fit together as a group, not least because most of these songs are to do with measures of dislocation, of loss, of some kind of imagined or anticipated future which didn't arrive. I was unfamiliar with several of these songs before I began this project. One discovery led on to another in some kind of paper trail. The back stories to the songs are interesting and some of the writers and singers had a spectacularly dramatic time of things. I doff my hat to these sometimes complicated lives. My approach has always been to make cultural rather than strictly linguistic translations, so that the spirit of the song rather than its precise narrative is rendered. I hope I've addressed the material, the writers, the original performers, with due and proper respect. Inevitably though there's spin here: mine all mine." With a sly nod to Police Academy, Punk Authority launches into a barrage of debauched, regressive noise punctuated by the kind of beats you'd more readily expect to find on an Underground Resistance 12" (And that's as effortlessly engaging as it sounds). Using a deceptively simple synthesizer/tape setup, Swanson siphons his club constructions through a hoarse mix of saturation and overdrive, resulting in something aggressive yet effortlessly foot pushing. Punk Authority might have the kind of surface grit you'd expect to come across on a hand-painted cassette tape, but at its heart is a vomited pulse half-heard through a Stuttgart toilet stall. Swanson has successfully re-tooled a genre to fit his needs, and this Punk Authority is his chance to really crack his bare knuckles.

Pete Fine is a virtuoso acoustic and electric guitarist and also a self-taught composer and orchestrator. After playing with psychedelic hard-rock trio Flow in the early 70s in New York, Pete, influenced by classical composers like Anton Bruckner, started to focus on his 12-string guitar, composing music in a symphonic style.

“On A Day Of Crystalline Thought” was his first solo album, self-released in 1974 as a private, home-made edition of 100 copies, now impossible to find. It was recorded using classical / rock musicians plus a chamber Orchestra from Harlem. It features 12-string guitars, electric guitars, timpani, string sections, French horns, flute, piano, organ, drums with early digital delays, female vocal harmonies.

I Love It When A Band Comes Together…The one thing that has kept most artists sane during the pandemic is writing and creating. In an attempt to apply this logic Red Ant Records maestro Pete Bones decided to recruit the talents of a bunch of cool cats he had met whilst traveling the globe and put a band together. Having often wondered after 30 odd years as a DJ/Producer how the band would sound had he not been swept up by Acid House in the late 80s, six months later, plenty of file bouncing and numerous edits, and The Stones Of Convention were ready to wreak havoc. The first album, Wild Moose Chase, featured seven original tracks, and a cover of the Talking Heads classic Pull Up The Roots. For the new LP, Hyena Hopscotch, Pete recruited two new members, including a new vocalist, Jazzi Sirius. Pete gives some context on the album itself: “The concept of The Stones Of Convention was always intended to be fairly fluid; given the virtual nature of the project and the location of the band members. I wanted to write that awkward second album that was both a sequel to Wild Moose Chase, and a more complex and diverse LP in its own right. I hope I've still ended up with a record to dance to, wherever you may feel the urge. It contains tracks that have a definite pop feel, some industrial funk and even a ska-house hybrid. We can't make music specifically for the late great Andy Weatherall to play any longer, but we can make tunes I hope he would have loved. I am joined on the album by a new vocalist and co-writer, Jazzi Sirius, who is an immense talent, Paul Withey who lays some warm fuzzy guitar down, and my regular bandmates, Duncan Gray, Pierre Davis and the two Jeffs, Richey and Ward. They are at their incomparable best of course, and last but not least, the amazing mixing skills of Justin Drake.”

Shadow of the Beast remains a prime example of his pioneering hands-on approach, programming music directly with instrumental samples of his own on a Korg M1 synthesizer. The tunes make for a singular combination of Spaghetti Western-style tension mixed with world beats. Tracks like The Plains play with harder rhythms like warped speed techno, while a hard-to-miss melancholy pervades the Underground suite.
The fiendishly difficult Shadow of the Beast itself was an interesting example of game design for its time, recorded at a frame rate to match arcade machines as opposed to monitors, and loaded with a 128 colour palette. Two sequels later followed in the 1990s, along with a 2016 remake for the Playstation console.
The soundtrack comes ready for a 2019 audience with mastering courtesy of Jerome Schmitt at the AirLab, and brand new artwork from acclaimed illustrator and musician Keith Rankin in collaboration with artist Ellen Thomas. Shadow of the Beast will also come on transparent purple vinyl, in standard LP format.

Please welcome Personality Cult to the Dirtnap Records roster! What started as a solo project for North Carolina’s Ben Carr has evolved into a full-band supergroup of sorts, featuring past and present members of Paint Fumes, Last Year’s Men, Natural Causes, Bass Drum Of Death, Missing Pages, Mind Spiders, Sweet Talk, Sweet Knives, and probably a bunch more!Dirtnap was tipped off to this monster of an album by Jeff Burke (Radioactivity / Marked Men) as he was recording it a few months back in NYC. The English duo Persher, Arthur Cayzer (Pariah) and Jamie Roberts (Blawan), take the same subversive, boundaryless approach to extreme music that underpins their electronic explorations. Their individual singles output are highly anticipated in the dance world in part because of their affinity expression beyond a trend. The debut album Sleep Well is ferocious and innovative. Cayzer and Roberts take a decidedly unconventional approach to writing, using the full potential of the studio in their exploration of extreme music. What sounds like a live band performance is more often than not an amalgam of many different sessions, the duo applying techniques from electronic music to heavier sonics. Recording in Roberts" studio at Funkhaus, the home of the former East German state-owned radio station, Cayzer would improvise long takes on guitar and bass, contorted and mutated by Robert"s using his extensive modular setup to add weight and texture. Joe Pernice has been writing for a long time—most of his life, in fact—and has crafted a remarkable catalog that boldly reinterprets and recasts classic American pop. Who Will You Believe may be his most moving and nuanced album yet; it’s certainly his timeliest. “These songs were all written during the same time period,” he says, “and they all seemed to tap into a mood I was in at the time. I go through spells where I’m a certain way for three or four months. I might be more reticent than usual, or more outgoing. With all of my records—and especially with this one—the songs all feel like they belong together, probably because they all arrived during the same stretch of time.” In a single six-month stretch he was left reeling from the deaths of three close friends, including David Berman, poet and songwriter for Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, and Gary Stewart, the Rhino Records co-founder and tireless Pernice Brothers supporter since their first album in 1998. “That was such a bad patch when David and Gary both took their own lives. And my cousin Joe Harvard, who started Fort Apache Studios in Boston and was like a brother to me—he died, too. It was such a tough year. I was thinking about them a lot and watching how divided America had become. I was doing my best to try and take nothing for granted.” Pernice has been releasing albums for over 25 years. And with age comes a greater patience and an immense appreciation for the act of creation. "Perilymph started a few years ago as a one man project led by Fabien de Menou, a french man living in Berlin. The first album was composed and recorded as such, Fabien recorded everything in his studio, except for the drums, which he asked his friend Fabian to record.
As other friends joined in, the band was able to turn these songs into a live show.
It's around this time that Fabien composed the songs for “Deux". Here, the process was a little different, and he was able to bounce ideas off everyone, and to try riffs and ideas as a band. The recording process was very similar to the first time though, with once again Fabian recording drums and Fabien taking care of the rest, as well as the production.
This album is a step forward in the story of the band: moving from Fabien's bedroom songs into a band of friends."

Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of ONEIDA, PEOPLE OF THE NORTH is another voice emanating from that inscrutable Brooklyn collective. The group has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of ONEIDA as well. POTN has performed live from time to time since 2002; most recently, they were invited by PORTISHEAD to play at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival held in Asbury Park, NJ in October 2011. In 2010, PEOPLE OF THE NORTH released its first full-length album, titled "Deep Tissue". This recording was hailed by cognoscenti of contemporary psychedelia as an essential component of the recent ONEIDA canon. Media outlets compared the sound of "Deep Tissue" to Suicide and Silver Apples; This Heat; Eno, Loop, Simply Saucer, and Amon Duul. "Steep Formations", a double LP consisting of two long-formpieces, was recorded at the Ocropolis in 2010 and 2011, with the participation of Shahin Motia and Barry London of ONEIDA. Here, the drumming of Kid Millions has ascended to a profound and utterly unique level: muscular African-derived fluidity and relentless motorik drive have been alchemized into an indescribable brew that surges and pounds among the distorted tides of "BorderWaves"; and the stony, brutal glaze of the title track displays a far more severe commitment to minimalism and noise than prior work offered. While much that has been written about People of the North before remains relevant, newly apt touchstonesand contextual clues might include Kevin Drumm, Giusto Pio, Terry Riley, Tony Williams, Conrad Schnitzler, Throbbing Gristle, Pelt. Themes present in the minds of the creators during the construction of this recording have included: theoverlap and juxtaposition of natural with industrial processes; the interplay betweenman-made and natural entropies; the limits on human comprehension of chaos; the contradictions inherent in conscious acts of surrender; more, but why not use this as a starting point?

People's only work in 1971 featuring Outkast's organist Yusuke Hoguchi and guitarist Kimio Mizutani, Adams's Hideaki Takebe, and percussionist Larry Sunaga. Produced by Naoki Tachikawa, it was created with the concept of Buddha + Rock.

It is full of unique psychedelia sounds, such as the sutra chanting "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" backed by a fuzz guitar, the sound of monk's geta, bells, wooden fish, sitar, etc.

Although it uses a lot of sound effects reminiscent of Buddhism, it doesn't feel like a religious idea, and the work is overall easy to listen to.

In recent years, this album has been highly desired by DJs as a breakbeat material and as a spiritual record.
