Nirvana's third LP is a masterpiece of late UK sixties popsike turning into symphonic pop, but not having received proper promotion despite being equally good as, if not better than their previous releases, it also marked the end of the collaborations between Patrick Campbel-Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos back in 1969.

Nirvana presented it to Island boss Chris Blackwell under the title of Black Flower. Blackwell, however, decided to turn it down for release, but gave the masters to Campbell-Lyons and Spyropoulos so they could find a new label to release the album. That was to happen in the USA through Metromedia Records in 1969. At that time, the label's owner went through a scandal due to the payola days, which left Nirvana's third offering without any promotion - as a result of that, very few copies were pressed. There was also a UK release on PYE and it was even released by Metromedia in Japan. However, for years it remained as "the lost" Nirvana release, with the added fact that none of the released editions launched the album under its original title of Black Flower but under the rather cryptic Dedicated To Markos II (read why in the liner notes!).

Musically, this is Nirvana at their best. The tune that should have been the title track, Black Flower, is an incredible piece of symphonic psychedelia and probably the best produced Nirvana track ever. Campbell-Lyons and Spyropoulos were backed for the occasion by Spooky Tooth, who played on many tracks of the album, and big orchestral arrangements mesmerize the listener in one of the duo's darkest offerings. This song aside, the rest of the album was deemed as sounding too much like a French soundtrack by Island, which may do at some points –without that being a bad thing,– but there is a lot more to it, since Nirvana have not lost that popsike edge that characterised their sound in their two previous outings.

This is also a record that was widely acclaimed in the hip hop scene. And samplers of it have been used by several artists, most notably DJ Shadow used Love Suite in his 1996 debut album Endtroducing.

The Wah Wah edition has been remastered from the original tapes by Roger Prades @ Prades Mastering and comes with a bonus 7" EP and a four page colour insert with liner notes by Malcom Dome, plus a sheet with the lyrics of the songs. First ever official vinyl reissue since 1970 in a limited edition of 500 copies only!

In 1968 leader Richard Atkins - Richard Manning his artistic partner & co-writer, hence the name - was building toward success, his musical adventures and philosophy not that far from the likes of The Byrds or the more eccentric Simon & Garfunkel. He’d won a contract with Mercury Records, and recorded with the Wrecking Crew members, a group of Los Angeles session musicians famous for their work with the Beach Boys, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, and hundreds more. But stage fright triggered a disastrous make-or-break performance in a small Hollywood nightclub, and everything abruptly fell apart. Atkins gave up music in the prime, and for 50 years he refused even to listen to a radio, so painful were his memories of a career he was convinced could have been. Featuring top-notch backing from musicians such as Drake Levin (Paul Revere & the Raiders), Larry Knechtel (Bread), Mark Tulin (the Electric Prunes) and Rusty Young (Poco), the album - nonetheless - it's bound to appeal to all fans of high-quality early '70s US pop-rock. Brooklyn's Habibi brought an explosive and celebratory fun to their self-titled 2014 debut. That brief collection was overflowing with bubblegum melodies, upbeat pop, and the kind of giddy excitement that bands only revel in during their earliest stages. Six years later, sophomore album Anywhere But Here retains some of that excitement, but sees the band expanding into moodier expression, more complex songwriting, and an expanded instrumentation that includes occasional Middle Eastern touches. This kind of progression was hinted at on the band's 2018 EP Cardamom Garden, which saw them incorporating Persian hand percussion and lyrics sung in Farsi into shadowy rock tunes. Anywhere But Here splits its track list between higher-energy power pop songs like the attitude-heavy "Misunderstood" and more simmering, downtempo slow burns like "Flowers." On the moodier songs, spindly surf-rock guitar leads blur into reverb-coated vocal harmonies. The relaxed pace and sun-dazed atmosphere of "Angel Eyes" sounds like the Allah-Las at their most subdued, but before long, Habibi calls on the jittery fire of their earliest material for the dancey garage pop of "Bad News." Both Habibi's pop-friendly and atmospheric sides grow on Anywhere But Here, with more direct hooks on songs like "Hate Everyone But You" and a daring willingness to explore outside of their known parameters on songs like album-closer "Come My Habibi." Along with auxiliary percussion from a tombak player, the song finds a droning riff stretching into a psychedelic workout, taking the band further out than they've ventured before. Being able to break new, more serious ground without losing any of the pop core that made the band so fun to begin with is the album's key strength. Anywhere But Here not only has some of Habibi's most adventurous songs, but also some of their best yet.

Completely unknown album by Salah Ragab's Cairo Jazz Band vocalist Maha, recorded in Cairo in 1979. Features productions by Hany Shenoda of Al Massrieen. Maha’s “Orkos,” originally released on cassette, is one of these standout musical diamonds that combines Jazz and Egyptian vocal traditions with Funk, Latin and Soul.

Maha’s “Orkos” immediately catches your ear as a unique album. A strong and energetic voice, equally grounded in jazz as well as Egyptian vocal traditions, Maha sings over instrumentals that offer a wide palette of influences, sonically emblematic of the cultural changes that were occurring in the country. The album features rich compositions and productions by renown Egyptian musician Hany Shenoda, who’s group, Al Massrieen, Habibi Funk worked with in 2017 (the release led to sync placements in Hulu’s “Ramy” TV Series).

At the time of its release, however, the “Orkos” cassette quickly faded away among the growing number of releases populating the Egyptian musical soundscape. For more than 40 years, it sat in near obscurity before being given new life in the form of a properly licensed vinyl release. Habibi Funk and Disco Arabesquo are honored to play a part in sharing Maha’s story. Below is a bit more context around the release as well as the campaign schedule.

The arrival of the cassette brought a seismic shift in how music was produced and consumed around the world. Smaller bands and labels were able to release music without the logistical and financial barrier present in vinyl manufacturing. At the same time, in Egypt, a new crop of musicians and composers made their way into the scene, seeking to bring something fresh to what was perceived as the widely monophonic musical traditions of Egypt. Hany Shenoda, Mohamed Mounir, Magdy El Hossainy, Omar Korshid, Salah Ragab and Hamid El Shaeri are some names that come to mind. Many built their sounds combining their own musical upbringing with influences coming from the outside. The success of these projects varied widely, but for each there were numerous lesser-known bands and singers. Many of these often-short-lived projects would release their music on cassettes on tiny labels only to fade into the musical ether.

Maha’s “Orkos” album fits this category. Put out in a small run of cassettes, it’s fair to say that the singer’s sole recording outing was not a financial success when it was originally released by Egyptian label Sout El Hob in 1979. While it may not have found an engaged and open-eared audience upon its release, the first few bars of the album indicate this is a special, timeless album that transcends the musical boundaries that many artists were seeking to break through at the time.

From the funk sounds of “Law Laffeina El Ard” (Single 1, out September 1 with Pre-Order announcement); the moody, mellow sounds of “Kabl Ma Nessallem We Nemshy” (Single 2, out September 23) or “We Mesheet;” to excursions into Latin sounds in the title track “Orkos,” and disco with “Ana Gaya” (Album Focus Track, out October 10) the album is an amalgamation of genres that stands out from the immense creativity present in Egypt at the time.

We connected Maha in late 2021 and she was clearly surprised to have someone call about music she recorded more than 40 years ago. She also seemed interested in the idea in bringing her music back to people’s attention. A few weeks later we were speaking with our friend Moataz, who runs the Disco Arabesquo project and showed him this great new album we found and to our surprise he knew the album, having found a copy of it a year or two before, in Cairo. It was then obvious to team up for a collaboration for this project. You can find Moataz’s story about Maha and her music, as well as extensive interviews with Maha herself, in the booklet accompanying the release.

Each song on Ghost Funk Orchestra's 3rd album, A New Kind of Love, due to be released on Colemine Records _ 2022, resonates like the soundtrack to a scene from an imaginary movie. The music could score a romantic drama, an action thriller, or a modern twist on a classic film noir. The spare, cascading vocals accentuate the lush instrumental orchestrations composed, performed, arranged and produced by multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum, whose latest brainchild was conceived and conceptualized during The Great Pause of 2020, a time of tension, bewilderment and isolation. Evoking the grooviness of an era which preceded his arrival on earth, Applebaum draws upon sonic devices of mid-century exotica and the succinct but dense arranging style of the leaders of the pop orchestras which dominated the hit parades of the 60s and early 70s. He blends impressions of this bygone era with an expression of his actual experiences as a young filmmaker coming of age in the 21st century, citing influences such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Antibalas. A New Kind of Love encompasses a reverence for the past without attempting to recreate it. In the tradition of the "production forward" discographies of such record makers as David Axelrod and the Mizell Brothers, it's easy to visualize Applebaum as a "mad doctor" figure, hunkered down in a studio channeling this musical representation of his inner world into the 12 compositions which make up A New Kind of Love. His writing stretches his psyche to explore a terrain in which to capture emotional notes of love going well, love gone sour, manifesting love songs based in ghostly affairs. While the studio is obviously a wondrous happy place of experimentation and creativity for Applebaum, he's a band guy too (having actually fronted punk outfit The Mad Doctors). Applebaum has the wherewithal to bring his dreamy material to the 10 piece all star Ghost Funk Orchestra, leading them to breathe life into this sophisticated body of work which heralds the celebration of a new era for the group. Ghost Funk Orchestra will be touring in concert this summer and fall to celebrate the release of A New Kind of Love, an album which is sure to stand the test of time.

1983’s Waves of Peace is an album of gentle reflection. The sound of ocean waves permeates every track. Sitar, tambura, synthesizer, and bamboo flute are among the instruments that Aziz & Friends use to conjure their blissful oceanic meditation.

Aziz reminisces: “Waves of Peace was born in the beautiful oceanside town of Santa Cruz, California. Living there in 1982 was the first timeI had ever lived so close to the ocean. I would walk down to the beach on a daily basis. Nature has always been a major source of inspiration in my quest to create beautiful original music. Equally important to me has been recognizing the healing potential of harmonious sound. This potential was made clear to me through my illuminating work with the Sufi order, as well as various modern dance companies. Finally, my music has always been shaped by my lifelong commitment to peace and non-violence. With all of these things in mind, drawing inspiration from the nearby ocean and the growing popularity of New Age music, I produced Waves of Peace.

Waves of Peace was my first album to combine instrumental music with the sounds of nature. Bei seiner Erstveröffentlichung im Jahr 1967 stellte "Are You Experienced" die Musikwelt auf den Kopf, denn Hendrix zeigte allen, was es bedeutet, "erfahren" zu sein. Hendrix synthetisierte verschiedene Elemente der modernsten Rockmusik von 1967 zu einer Musik, die sowohl futuristisch klang als auch in den besten Traditionen von Rock, Blues, Pop und Soul verwurzelt war. Die meiste Aufmerksamkeit erhielt natürlich seine atemberaubende Gitarrenarbeit, mit der er neue klangliche Territorien in Bezug auf Rückkopplung, Verzerrung und schiere Lautstärke erschloss. Das hätte jedoch nicht viel bedeutet ohne sein hervorragendes Material, ob psychedelische Raserei ("Foxey Lady", "Manic Depression", "Purple Haze"), instrumentale Freak-Out-Jams ("Third Stone from the Sun"), Blues ("Hey Joe") oder zarte, poetische Kompositionen ("The Wind Cries Mary"), die die Bandbreite seines Songwriting-Talents demonstrierten. Nicht zu unterschätzen waren die Beiträge von Schlagzeuger Mitch Mitchell und Bassist Noel Redding, die der Musik einen rhythmischen Puls gaben, der Teile des Rock und des improvisierten Jazz verschmolz.

Was Jimi über die Neuauflage seines Debütalbums in den USA durch Reprise Records dachte, die "The Wind Cries Mary", "Purple Haze" und "Hey Joe" in die ursprüngliche 11-Track-Liste aufnahmen, ist nicht ganz bekannt. Aber Jimi äußerte bei späteren Bühnenauftritten seine Enttäuschung darüber, dass "Red House", seine großartige Original-Blueskomposition, aus dem US-Album gestrichen worden war.

Die US-Version des Titels wurde im August 1967 veröffentlicht. Enthalten sind auch die ersten drei britischen Singles der Gruppe: "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe" und "The Wind Cries Mary".

glass beach's debut album the first glass beach album is the first album from glass beach. That's a good place to start, but the album's plain & descriptive title does little to explain exactly what goes on in the hour-long adventure contained therein.the first glass beach album was initially self-released by the band in Spring 2019, but it's roots date back to as early as 2015 - songwriter & band leader j mclendon started demoing songs for the album when they first moved to Los Angeles & spent three years polishing those first demos into these songs with bassist Jonas Newhouse & drummer William White. On their Bandcamp page, the band describes their sound as the accumulation of jazz, new wave, synth music, and emo distorted through the lens of punk. The songs that make up the first glass beach album are ambitious, theatrical and chaotic. Abandoning genre limitations makes glass beach's talent for songwriting all the more apparent - mathy guitar leads, catchy drum grooves and the constant interplay of horns, synths, and even the intermittent theremin set the perfect scene for j's stunning vocal performance, which can shift from a charming falsetto to the lead of a sing-a-long in an instant.

Fully licensed, ltd to 500 copies, 180 gr. The biblical ten commandments are surely the main inspiration behind this concept album originally released on british independent label Young Blood in 1971. The one and only release by Salamander, a short- lived UK four piece , the album is a quintessential prog opera with a heavy effort on Hammond organ and lush orchestral arrangements. Comprised of Alister Benson (Organ, Vocals), Dave Chriss (Bass), John Cook (Drums) and Dave Titley (Lead Vocals, Guitar) the band was often compared to The Moody Blues and Deep Purple Mark I. Even if the 10 tracks are inspired by the holy script, the band was not proven to be Christian rock itself. The album is a sublime pompous pop affair, with a good dose of fuzz guitars and brass section.

It consists of two long jazz pieces characterized by the presence of odd tempos (hence the title), the album featured the writing “Live Alcione”. Actually, the recording of the concert at the Alcione turned out to be of such poor sound quality that the group decided to re-record it in the studio, albeit live.

The poor commercial and critical success of the album was one of the reasons that led to the reunion of the New Trolls.

Jazz influences are heard, much stronger than Atomic System. Moreover, the name of the group on the cover of this album is New Trolls again and the musicians are not named, but the formation is in fact the same as the Atomic system, led by De Scalzi.

"Florist" is the self-titled fourth full length record from upstate NY based indie folk band, Florist. "Florist" is the follow up to 2019's critically acclaimed "Emily Alone", and is the strongest album of the band's decade-long career; an immersive work that conveys the magic of the earth and of family, and the whole of the band's heart. For all of June of 2019, amid a hot and rainy summer, Emily Sprague (guitar, synth, vocals), Jonnie Baker (guitar, synth, sampling, bass, saxophone, vocals), Rick Spataro (bass, piano, synth, vocals) and Felix Walworth (percussion, synth, guitar, vocals) convened in a rented house in the Hudson Valley, to live and work together. It was the first time the quartet recorded that way, and for that long. "In the past we'd meet up for a couple of days, or one day here and there," Sprague recalls. "Living together for a month is a really big part of why the arrangements are the way they are, and also why the instrumentals are such a huge part of the record." The result is 19 tracks that feel like the culmination of a decade-long journey, their fourth full-length album, but the first deserving of a self-titled designation. "We called it Florist because this is not just my songs with a backing band," Sprague explains. "It's a practice. It's a collaboration. It's our one life. These are my best friends and the music is the way that it is because of that."

Repress of the Josiah fourth album in new coloured vinyls !!! "Those who’ve experienced Josiah’s groove-heavy swagger know that it’s the guitar of Mat Bethancourt in the starring role, but this trio relies almost as much on the backing rhythms on Procession. Blink and you’ll miss the first two tracks, “Procession” and “Broken Doll,” both of which are under two and a half minutes, but for the other three cuts of studio material (“Thirteen Scene,” highlight “Dying Day” and the more garage rock “Dead Forever”), it’s just as much Beacom and Beasley’s show as it is Bethancourt's. That would be the end if not for the five live tracks from Josiah’s Swedish run in 2007. Four out of the five — “Looking at the Mountain,” “Time to Kill,” “Silas Brainchild” and closer “I Can’t Seem to Find It” — come from the band’s final recorded full-length, No Time, and only “Malpaso,” reaches back further, having first appeared on the 2001 10” Out of the First Rays. Not that we needed it by this time, but these live versions are basically just further confirmation of what underground rock lost with Josiah. "decade", the sixth album by Calibro 35, the legendary cinematic funk combo sampled by Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, gets a reissue on ltd edition Crystal Yellow vinyl edition with bonus tracks.

Record Kicks presents the reissue of Calibro 35's sixth acclaimed album "decade" on limited edition Crystal Yellow vinyl and digital deluxe edition with 3 bonus tracks on April 29th2022. The publication is part of "The Record Kicks Trilogy" that follows the reissue of the first three albums of the band, released in 2020. This time, Milan label Record Kicks will repress on wax of three different colors and on digital deluxe edition, the fourth, fifth and sixth legendary studio albums of the Italian cinematic-funk cult band. The deluxe digital edition of "decade" includes 3 bonus tracks: "Gomma", "Polymeri (Afro-Utopia Version)" and "Travelers, Explorers (feat. Elisa Zoot)".

Released in 2018, "decade"marked 10 years of Calibro 35's career and it's the very first album recorded by Calibro with an orchestral-inspired enlarged line-up that features horns, strings and percussions. Mixed and recorded by Calibro's usual suspect and Grammy Award winner Tommaso Colliva, on the album all the influences collected by the band during their last ten years' journey like music, collaborations, movies, gigs, books find their space. "decade" is Calibro 35's "time capsule" and it is as rare and complex as a timeless work.

Musically Calibro 35's inner influences like Ennio Morricone - listen for instance to the epic journey of the album's end credits "Travelers" - Luis Bacalov and David Axelrod are still there but are now mixed with elements from afrobeat or cosmic jazz. "Psycheground" sounds like Tony Allen involved in writing a score for a vintage Hollywood production while Sun Ra lurks on "Modo". Everything is mixed up with new influences from modern musical languages. References to Jaga Jazzist, Budos Band or Alternative Jazz and Alternative Hip Hop new acts such as Makaya McCraven, Yussef Kamaal, Oddisee can all be found on the album. In tracks such as "Modulor" you realize that "decade" is certainly not a point of arrival and expresses the ambition of the band to look further and evolve. All classic Calibro's vintage instruments such as clavinet, eco, analog synths, fuzz guitars are now supported by new ones such as Dan Bau, Balafon and Waterphone ("Polymeri") in the band's new wall of sound. Thanks to the enlarged line-up and the orchestrated parts involved, which pushed the band to experiment new methods of composition, Calibro 35 on "decade" sound strong, full and tight as never before.

Active since 2008, Calibro 35 enjoy a worldwide reputation as one of the coolest independent bands around. During their fourteen-year career, they were sampled by Dr. Dre on his Compton album, Jay-Z, The Child of lov & Damon Albarn; they shared stages worldwide with the likes of Roy Ayers, Muse, Sun Ra Arkestra, Sharon Jones, Thundercat and Headhunters and as unique musicians they collaborated with, amongst others, PJ Harvey, Mike Patton, John Parish and Stewart Copeland and Nic Cester (The Jet). Described by Rolling Stone magazine as "the most fascinating, retro-maniac and genuine thing that happened to Italy in the last years", Calibro 35 now count on a number of aficionados worldwide including VIP fans such as Dj Food (Ninja Tune), Mr Scruff and Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin' Criminals) among others.

Oddball, die neue Single von THE Baboon Show ist für alle Sonderlinge, Außenseiter*innen und Einzelgänger*innnen, die nicht rein passen oder nicht reinpassen wollen. Für alle Oddballs, wie es The Baboon Show nennen und zu denen sie sich selbst zählen. In ihren eignen Worten: "Be whoever you wanna be and have fun while doing it! Oddballs we salute you!!! Musikalisch ist der Song eine eingängige und kraftvolle gute Laune Rocknummer wie sie typisch für das besondere Songwriting der Band ist. Neben dem genannten Song Oddball enthält die 7" noch den Track Have A Party With ME, im Original vom in Schweden berüchtigten Rock'n`Roll Cruiser King Eddie Meduza. Der Songtitel sagt schon alles: Let`s party! Danke für den Song, Eddie, rest in peace! Als THE Baboon Show letztes Jahre ihre 12"ep I Never SAY Goodnight veröffentlichten, sind sie fest davon ausgegangen, dass als nächstes ein Album folgen würde_Leider ist die Welt noch immer in der Hand der Pandemie und da eine Releasetour für die Band untrennbar mit der Veröffentlichung eines Albums verbunden ist, werden sie noch ein wenig auf den richtigen Moment warten. THE Baboon Show selbst sprechen aber bereits jetzt von einem Killeralbum, welches auf dem Weg ist. Wir sind gespannt und bis dahin wünschen wir großen Spaß mit Oddball! Die Oddball 7" erscheint in einem besonderen Set zusammen mit einem 20-seitigem full colour Comic und einem speziellen Oddball Patch. Das Comic stammt von Gabriel Renner, die herrlich unterhaltsame Story von Doctor Rock, der hier auf Geschichten und Erinnerungen aus dem Touralltag der Band zurück greift. Von beiden eine richtig gute Arbeit und sehr sehr lustig. Comic und Patch wird es nur in Verbindung mit der Oddball Single geben.
