About THE Band: Mad Dogs is a band born and devoted to rock since 2009. In 2016 the band found its shape and stabililty after several formation changes. In autumn of the same year, the Mad Dogs entered the Go Down Studio in Savignano sul Rubicone to record Ass Shakin ‘Dirty Rollers. The album was mixed and mastered by Alfredo “Epi” Gentili and it came out in April 2017 via Go Down Records. It was an instinctive record, written and recorded in a short time and able to shoot the band without filters. The project was supported by the 2 singles “I Can Move” and “Point Of View”, both launched with videos. The critics positively welcomed the work. Strengthened by the gained experience and with a new awareness, the band was ready to record the new album We Are Ready To Testify in June 2019. The Mad Dogs showed off a powerful sound, emphasizing the rock’n roll attitude and love for garage-rock sounds, but giving space to more refined details and 70s atmosphere too. During these years the band has shared the stage with artists such as Lords Of Altamont, Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman), Keith Streng (Fleshtones), Yawing Man, Sick Rose, Not Moving and many others.

The Pointed Sticks were formed in early 1978 and quickly became a big part of the underground punk / new wave scene in Vancouver, Canada, gigging with bands like D.O.A., the Subhumans and the Dishrags—they had a fun, quirky style that they combined with pure pop genius.

Their first single, “What Do You Want Me To Do / Somebody’s Mom,” was released in 1978 by the newly formed Quintessence Records. It quickly took off and led to the follow up “Real Thing / Out of Luck” single on Quintessence as well.

On the momentum of these instant pop classics, the band started touring up and down the west coast of North America, the crowds grew, and so did the press coverage. In 1980 the Pointed Sticks signed to Stiff Records and flew to England to record an album. Through bad luck and bad production, the album was never released (the Bob Rock production of the Perfect Youth album came out on Sudden Death in 1981).

Throughout their short career, 1978-1981, the band produced three singles and a multitude of demos and TV and radio recordings. The best of these have been melded together by Davie Wiese and Chris Cutress (producer of the fabulous Vancouver Complication album) into Waiting For The Real Thing.

On this compilation one gets to hear one of the very best bands of that great musical era at their most inspirational stage.

Superb Clash broadcast recording from 1982! When punk arrived in the UK in the mid-seventies it sent shock waves around the country. Slovenly Recordings selects GOB Psychic from Aarhus, Denmark’s buzzing underground. Inspired by the endless wave of Melbourne punk rock since Melbourne began punk rocking, as well as oddball sounds from the Midwestern U.S.A, the Gob Psychic spin is just as abrasive, aggressive and compelling as anyone’s music that put them on this warpath. Their debut “Rent Payer” 7inch reeks of alienation, and an apathetic stance on having to put their pants on one leg a time to get to earn some green and worthless workplace accolades, but they’ve managed to jump in to this sonic ferocity with both appendages, claws extended. The songs were recorded in a 2-day-session at Sauna Studios with Neil R. Young filling in the roles of producer and recording engineer, with Jeppe Grønbæk Andersen on mixing duties and added instrumentation.

What we don't have here is "Omelette Punk," or "Country-Rawk," or Anything but stripped-down Rock'n'roll from Missouri's Still Animals. The 10 tracks on this eponymous debut are short, and to the point. In a perfect world, real kids everywhere are dancing to it on real radios while ditching real lame study hall, and they Look Kool doin’ it. This is the sound of St. Louis: the city's lead and limestone from a dead era, revitalized, and without a lick of gentrification. A couple of the cats here picked up their axes for the first time for this band, and the others cut their teeth touring with some excellent punk and hardcore combos. "Still Animals" fully represents uncharted territory for this crew, and it sounds to Slovenly like they were born to kill in their simplicity and ineptitude. When The Steves' two extremely limited (maybe 100-200 of each?) EPs were released back in 1980 and '81 respectively, the squares around Harvard's newsroom were aghast at the audacity of this group. Having the stones to release such crudely-rhythmic, near mechanical and downright terse tunes in the day's often long winded prog rockin' ballad heavy radio reality that were too robotic to be “punk” and too unruly to be anything but was, to say the least, a bold move. Sure to cause an uproar in the halls, protests in the classroom and uninvited dancing in the streets! In the annals of New England's rock journalism, there is not a mountain of coverage on The Steves, certainly not as much as the Alan Parsons Project or Aerosmith, but the fact remains that they were a fully charged powder keg of raw energy and new musical direction that seemed to elude most of the world back then. Not to say they didn't get any light shone on them, they did get a fair amount of airplay on the college stations around Boston and even appeared on the cover of Boston Rock magazine. It is Iron Lung Records' distinct pleasure to offer the modern world a new chance to discover the ever vital and effervescent music of The Steves' initial EPs along with a third EP of songs never released on vinyl until now that were recorded at the time or shortly after the initial sessions. Emotional Rescue returns to what it does best by unearthing musical gems of the British post punk scene with a double pack compilation of Bristol's short lived Recreational Records. Teaming up with Bristol Archive Records, 10 songs are remastered, reissued and cut loud for DJs and collectors. What is most striking is, although created in the space of just two years, with a disparate collection of artists, musicians and producers coming together, the music holds a considerable cohesive sound. Set up in 1981 by Bristol based shop, Revolver Records, Recreational was formed as an independent label with its own distribution, as part of the co-operative, Cartel. The label was a natural progression from the shop's punk's DIY aesthetic, acting as a hang out and inspiration for local artists from Mark Stewart to later staff member, Daddy G. 'Get It Right' starts with a one-off project in Scream + Dance, who similarly, alongside local bands Glaxo Babies, Maximum Joy and Rip Rig & Panic, explored post-punk with funk and jazz all underpinned with heavy tribal and dub influenced rhythms. 'In Rhythm', with its infectious groove, acts as a call to arms for the compilation, coming in two parts, the latter dropping away to explore the links with dub. Next is possibly the label's biggest band in Talisman, going on to be active up to today, their release 'Run Come Girl / Wicked Dem' are both featured in long 12" mixes that explore the classic 'discomix' of vocal and dub in longform. Animal Magic lead with the pack's title, 'Get It Right' a short-driven punk funk burst that captures the label's sound to perfection. However, much of the compilation is given over to the more experimental side of the bands, with a high percentage the B sides where they headed to the mixing desk for echo chambered dub inspired versions. X-Certs' 'Untogether; Electric Guitars' 'Don't Wake The Baby' and Animal Magic's 'Trash The Blad' are culled from the flips of various 7" singles and all are a fusion of percussive rhythms, studio trickery and dub inspired techniques, played out against the "Do it Yourself" aesthetic of the time. To complete is London based, soukous, kwela and afrobeat inspired collective, Ivory Coasters' 'Mungaka Makossa' and two rhythmic curveballs by Scream + Dance in 'Giocometti Wicked Mix)' and their riotous (and short) closer, 'In Pink & Black'. "Get it right this time, get it right!".

When it came to the follow-up of their 1990 magnum opus Feel The Darkness, failure was not an option for Poison Idea. Seeking a way to expand their musical horizons while still retaining their cranked-up style, UK-cum-Chicagoian producer Iain Burgess (Big Black, The Effigies, Naked Raygun) was brought in to assist in this audacious feat. The results—1992’s Blank Blackout Vacant—successfully showcased a meshing of Poison Idea's classically surging sound and a new found refinement: demonstrated by the brass section on tracks like the driving opener “Say Goodbye” or the chugging, Motörhead-esque “Forever and Always”. Rolling on with their relentless reissue schedule for Portland’s Kings of Punk, TKO replenishes the double-disc edition of Blank Blackout Vacant first introduced back in the maddening year of 2020. Along with the album’s original batch of thirteen tracks capped off by a thundering version of New York Dolls'’ “Vietnamese Baby”, you get a bonus LP containing a bevy of B-Sides, covers by acts as disparate as Lords Of The New Church, The Who, and Booker T. & The MGs., as well as a live on-air performance on Portland’s long-running community radio station Kboo from the Fall of 1991. Originally released at a pivotal point in the band's career, Blank Blackout Vacant remains an essential component in the understanding of the band's epic trajectory.

THE Welders were an all-female Punk Pop band from St. Louis, MO. Formed by four young, teenage women in 1975; they started playing shows in 1976, in one of the toughest climates to get booked for bands playing original material. The Welders bonded over their love of The Monkees, The Beatles and early glam rock. The comedy of the National Lampoon Radio Hour and the Marx Brothers were just as big of an influence. The band played several shows in the St. Louis metro area and eventually caught the attention of a local photographer and newspaper owner. He financed a recording session in 1979, with plans to release a four song EP. The newspaper folded before the release could happen, and all that survived was a cassette copy of the recordings. The Welders continued for a couple more years after recording the EP. They had brief line up changes, and added an organ which shifted their sound more towards a '60s garage pop sound. They were ahead of their time again, pre-dating most of the neo-garage explosion of the '80s. By 1981, the band had moved on to other interests. In 2010 BDR Records (a sub-label of Rerun, designated for St. Louis area artists) issued that previously unreleased EP. The EP was well received worldwide and has been sold out for several years. This new collection includes a newly remastered and improved version of the 1979 EP tracks, along with other studio, rehearsal and live recordings. The LP includes a large, six panel insert filled with amazing photos of the band.

Once referred to as an all-star roots/voodoo combo, The Flesh Eaters could only have crawled out of the myst of the late L.A. 70s punk scene. Fronted by punk poet/composer Chris D. (Desjardins), the band was a satellite for exquisite collaborators that allowed him to bring the full force of his dark, messed-up lyrical nightmares. Members of X, Wall Of Voodoo, Los Lobos, The Blasters, and The Plugz all hopped into his unmarked car to take a drive with Chris D.

Its grabbed-by-the-throat vocals are powerfully buoyed by the tight melodicism emanating from the players on this record (John Doe andDJ Bonebrake from X, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, Dave Alvin & Bill Bateman of The Blasters). Hell, we even get the perfectly executed John Doe original, “Cyrano de Berger’s Back,” which was re-recorded by X in 1987

“In November of 1982, I went into the studio with Government Issue to record what was to be their first full-length album. Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the master tapes and hearing the songs that had been left off, we thought it would be cool to release the complete session, and to fi nally release the record on Dischord proper. In going through the tapes, I discovered that most of the outtake songs were never mixed, so earlier this year I took the recordings back into the studio. Hearing the separated tracks amazed me. Such great playing and songs! With the technological advances in the recording world making multi-tracking and overdubbing so common, it’s easy to forget that studios could also be used as something more akin to a photo-booth, capturing what was happening at that very moment. Most of the early Dischord sessions were essentially ‘live’ recordings, so the bands had to be able to play, and because the budgets were minuscule, they had to get the songs down in short order. One of the most revered, reviled and talked about records in all Australian music history (I’m) Stranded by The Saints finally gets the vinyl box set treatment. Kjehl Johansen, guitarist and songwriter for the Circlons, first surfaced in 1978 with the influential minimalist punk band THE Urinals. Kjehl went on to play in other notable projects such as Trotsky Icepick, which released 7 albums on SST Records, and the lo-fi pop trio Narrow Adventure, who have a current album out on Austin-based Spacecase Records. His latest project is the Circlons, featuring Hunter Crowley on drums, Steve Andrews on rhythm and lead guitar, and TOM Hofer on bass. These seasoned veterans played in Trotsky Icepick, THE Last, and the Leaving Trains. The Circlons’ first release explores the dark underbelly of the music business in all its cynicism and glory. On the lead-off track, “I Wanna Be On Your Radio (Not In Your Arms),” vocalist John Talley-jones (Urinals, 100 Flowers) plants his tongue firmly in cheek and portrays a ruthless careerist using his girl- friend’s tears to write a song and get a record deal. True to form, our antagonist dumps the girl and doesn’t look back as told in this taut, rocking pop song. Next up is the title track where singer Adam Marsland (cockeyed Ghost) uses the weather and the natural disasters of Los Angeles to wearily describe a music executive leaving behind a trail of emotional carnage. Featuring a string quartet, this song is aptly titled “When Only the Music Is Pretty.” Lisa Kekaula’s (bell-rays) vocals on “Blue Cheer” take a serious turn and will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. This R&B-influenced song takes its inspiration from those who have survived the cruelty of domestic violence as they try to find their voice and have their music heard. The EP finishes with an epic improvisation inspired by the German band Can. Nestled in the swirling chaos of sounds, Barbara MANNING’s spoken words come to us from the void of creation and self-doubt, beyond death and time. Heavy stuff!

Some last copies, found in the bands rehearsal room. When Von Spar made their ciritcally acclaimed entrance in the pop circuit in 2003 (e.g. coverstory in Spex Magazine) they were regarded as the German answer to the Post-Punk/No-Wave-renaissance. But their debut was more a clever parody about eighties-style-hipster-bands. Three years later and wiser the supergroup (with members of Urlaub in Polen, Oliver Twist, Aggro Cologne) returns with an uncompromising album that gets ahead of all expectations and will surprise their audience and critics who will be shocked. This is not a band following the latest trend. Detached from the usual style issues Von Spar have exorsized the Zeitgeist and overtaken the discourse. There is no scheme. Anything goes. Their new musical language is inspired by seventies Krautrock taking lines of flight to Fluxus art, Minimal Music and early TripHop. Apart from ringtone-compatible hits Von Spar reanimate the classical album-format. The two 20-minute long songs combine the spirit of exploration from Can and Kraftwerk with the conceptual aesthetics of Steve Reich and John Cage and techniques of dark, psychedelic multi-layering by Neurosis and Bohren & Der Club of Gore. All references are permantly ruptured, adopted and newly interweaved. With two new members the five-headed pack recorded in the legendary Electric Avenue Studio, Hamburg, with producer Tobias Levin (Tocotronic, Blumfeld, Kante). Their new labelbase Tomlab offers the congenial platform for this unusual journey. The new album of Von Spar reclaims music as a truthful place for concentration and collective energy from which newness enters the world.

Mal-One’s new album starts with running through the radio dial, looking for some suitable music to listen to. These snippets are actually samples of songs from his previous album ‘It’s All Punk Rock’. Leading the listener nicely into a new set of songs to get their Punk Rock teeth into.

Songs that cover… the great New York punk scene of the 1970’s that grew out of a little bar in the Bowery District of New York City called CBGB’s ‘New York City Punk’. The Clash’s first album discussed in ‘When The Two 77’s Clashed’. The excitement of London’s Roxy Club revisited with its one line chant ‘Down The Roxy’. Those great ‘Punk Rock Fanzines‘, that kept us all so well informed. An early Sex Pistols gig at the Chelsea School of Art, ‘Machine Bubble Disco’. So named after what was to be the main event of that nights entertainment!!!.’45 Random Punk Memories’ sprang from Mal-One’s own reminisces. Talking of memories ‘Looking At The Decals On Steve Jones Guitar’, the recollection of Steve Jones, future guitarist of the Sex Pistols, stealing Mal-One’s bike when he was the tender age of seven years old. An incident that might have triggered this whole road of discovery in the first place.

A reflection on London’s harsh setting in those heady Punk times in ‘Corrugated London’ alongside a call and response to remember that ‘London’s Turning’ all the time for better or worse and that we can’t always pick and choose the bits we want to keep. The self-explanatory, ‘We Will All Lose Some Good Friends Along The Way’. ‘Shakespeare Meets Chuck Berry On Shepherds Bush Green’, a great story when Joe Strummer was asked by a reporter what he was up to and what he might call The Clash’s next album, which would turn out to be the timeless ‘London Calling’. Joe’s rather

tongue in cheek answer was “Shakespeare Meets Chuck Berry On Shepherds Bush Green’’.

A place close to Mal-One’s heart and a great title, that was crying out to be reused. Which Mal-One does via what he calls his Punk Art Poetry. Sometimes these lines are turned into lyrics and reworked into songs.

The album ends with such a call, ‘An Open Letter To…’ all those people who helped influence us all along the way. As the lyric states often without thought of financial gain, but done so, quiet simply because it had to be done.Maybe some young guns might in some small way, be inspired and find in Mal-One’s current efforts that ‘anything is possible’ and the true meaning of Punk was in fact, ‘Do It Yourself’.

The vinyl version of this release includes a poster that is part of Mal-Ones continuing Street Art project that involves putting up posters around London. This time declaring the news ‘Punk Rock Is Back!’. Included in the album packaging also is a signed and blind stamped limited print of one of Mal-One’s works ‘What Is It About Punk That’s So Different So Appealing’. A punk collage that just carries one word in among its multiple punk images and that word is Punk. We hope you enjoy the indulgence.

The 4 songs that make up Monster Squad’s “All Out Of Control” were written during extensive touring and shortly after the band released their influential 2004 LP “Strength Through Pain.” Monster Squad went to legendary Bart Thurber (Spazz, Capitalist Casualties, Neurosis) at House of Faith in Oakland to record the EP. These songs represented a slight departure from the speed that fans got to know on “Strength Through Pain.” The title track “All Out of Control” was a different side for Monster Squad, showcasing more anthemic (and much slower) songs than the breakneck, frenetic pace of their previous works. The band utilized ‘call and response’ vocal patterns which quickly became and remains one of the band’s most popular songs. The band continued to explore new ideas, such as incorporating a cowbell on “Church and State,” which talks about the overwhelming presence and oppression that organized religion has in politics. “Gotta Get Out” focuses on the ruts people find themselves in - nowhere to go to escape daily life with the inability to control anxious and hopeless feelings “All Out Of Control” has been out of print since 2006 and fans have been clamoring for a reissue for many years. This new 12” 45rpm version, remastered by Jack Shirley (Sweat, Deafheaven, Gouge Away) at The Atomic Garden, has a completely new layout. Monster Squad used images from the photo session of the original release and scans of the original lyric sheets written in 2005. The band also stumbled upon a collage from 1982 that the legendary collage maestro Winston Smith (Dead Kennedys, etc) made, titled “Security Control” which was a perfect fit, and is included in this new artwork. From the moment the needle drops on Monster Squad’s 2007 album “Fire The Faith” with the title track’s scorching bass lines, the record serves as a time capsule for a tenuous moment around the world. Radicalized politics, a neverending war, and the onset of an economic depression characterize a period we’d all soon rather forget.All of that, however, served as the fuel behind arguably the band’s most recognizable and revered album from the northern California punk band. For more than two decades, Anberlin has remained a formidable force in the alt-rock world, boasting a wildly devoted fanbase who’ve come to rely on the raw, cathartic power of their music.
