In the spring of 2019 ShitKid - Åsa Söderqvist and Lina Molarin Ericsson - headed over to the US for a couple of shows at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX but ahead of the festival they managed to squeeze in a couple of days in the studio ' first in LA with the legendary the Melvins and then in Austin with Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers. The new album Duo Limbo/'Mellan himmel å helvete' collects the recordings from these two sessions, half of which are ShitKid's first recordings in their native Swedish ' with a set of four songs to start with the band set out to record them in both English and Swedish, clocking in at just over 26 minutes. It's ShitKid's finest work yet with the duo backed by an all star line-up of Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) on half of the album and Paul Leary and Josh Freese (NIN, Devo, The Replacements etc) on the other half.

THE KARL HENDRICKS TRIO is a Pittsburgh rock institution. Having released nine full-lengths and six singles of uncompromising, emotionally charged, very loud rock over the course of twenty years, it's probably safe to call them an American rock institution as well. A former bedroom 4-track confessionalist, Karl Hendricks formed the Trio late in 1991. The band has undergone numerous line-up changes since, having had four different drummers, four different bass players, and during the two separate spans when the band augmented to a four-piece dubbed appropriately enough, the Karl Hendricks Rock Band, two different rhythm guitarists. The one constant has been, of course, Karl himself. The Trio debuted on record with 1992's Buick Electra, released on Karl's own Peas Kor label. From the mid '90s to the early 2000s the trio released several albums on Merge Records, and in 2007, Hendricks self-released the one and only Karl Hendricks Rock Band album, The World Says, on his Surplus Anxiety imprint. Comedy Minus One's release of The Adult Section in 2012 officially marks the end of the Karl Hendricks Rock Band Mark II and the return of the stripped-down Trio line-up. Karl's sound and his approach to songwriting have only gotten more nuanced and thoughtful with age. Musically, the Trio remains rooted in a muscular yet melodic sound built on a massive wall of guitars, and a bass and drum assault that powers things forward as much as it anchors them down. It's a straightforward aesthetic but it has allowed Karl's guitar playing to develop into a more sprawling and heroic version of the spirited six-string blasts of his youth. Born in the Basement, the 1994 second LP from horror-pop-punk mainstays the Groovie Ghoulies, in many ways marked a pivotal transition point for the band that would set the course for the rest of their career. After the first LP, the band had moved from Los Angeles to Sacramento, the city that would remain their home base for the duration of the band. The title of the record is more factual than one might assume: at the time, the Ghoulies' lineup of Kepi (bass/vocals), Roach (guitar), and Wendy (drums) were all co-habitating in a house by the city cemetery, practicing in the basement, where the record was indeed "born"! This lineup would remain together for the follow-up World Contact Day, which became the best-selling Ghoulies record! They also found themselves working with a prestigious new producer, recording at Seattle's Egg Studios with Conrad Uno (Mudhoney, The Presidents of the United States of America, The Ergs!). This relationship, too, would continue for World Contact Day. Fuelled by fan-favourite Ghoulies staples such as "The Beast with Five Hands," "I Wanna Have Fun," and "Back to the, Garage," the album was a self-released sell-out through two pressings, attracting the attention of legendary Bay Area punk label Lookout Records, who would work with the band through the year 2000, releasing 4 LPs and re-releasing 2, including Born in the Basement. For The Dark’s first ever vinyl album Dressing The Corpse, Scat has collected highlights from sessions recorded between 1981 and 1984 that range from savage post-punk (imagine Venom covering Warsaw), to raging exacto-knife thrashers, deathrock, and proto-black metal —there’s even the requisite creepy, atmospheric instrumental to open the album (“Beyond The Ice”)—which is naturally followed by “Fire In The Church.” Then things go other places, the group covered a lot of ground in its two and a half years and were always ahead of the curve.

Although the band’s median age ranges from fifteen to seventeen across these recordings, the rhythm section is second to none. The guitar playing is way further afield than most hardcore bands of the era. Namesake vocalist Tom Dark howls like a wolf, and could command a stage like few others. To be fair, the band’s youth does make itself known in some of the lyrics, but otherwise you’d never guess this was just a bunch of kids—it needn’t be graded on a curve.

The Dark had auspicious beginnings. They cut their teeth as The Decapitators in 1979, learning to play at the feet of the electric eels, Pagans, Dead Boys, and Cramps. After a year off, the four reformed to play only originals as The Dark, and almost immediately Mike Hudson of the Pagans wanted to manage the band. Included here is a demo Hudson recorded just three weeks after the band’s first practice. Hudson only lasted a year, but it was a hell of a start. The majority of the recordings on Dressing The Corpse are culled from the band’s 1984 album Scream Until We Die, which was not released until 2006 when Grand Theft Audio did a comprehensive double CD version of it. Included here are a few of the best non-album tracks from that release as well. Previously unreleased tracks include the aforementioned Hudson demo, as well as a previously unknown second demo from early 1982, ably representing the pre-thrash version of the band.

It’s 1980 in Orange County, California, and Punk Rock has been scorching the ‘burbs for a few years. Eddie Joseph has been on the Southern California scene the entire time, plotting his poisonous rock’n’roll maneuvers since the mid 1960s when he began playing in garage bands. Eddie had been honing his skills on roots music and swinging teenbeat well in advance of his foray into a new, seedy, violent punk blitzkrieg. There’s a master plan at work here, and it involves select players depending on which direction Eddie needs to bleed out of his system. The recruitment of Mike Patton and Matt Simon of OC legends THE Middle Class get Eddie AND THE Subtitles rolling for a slew of shows with comrades Black Flag, Adolescents, Circle Jerks and every other degenerate crew in the radius. A DIY imprint called No Label Records is formed (with literally NO Labels on the vinyl!) and the first single “Fuck You Eddie!” is unleashed. Recorded in Fullerton by JON ST. James at his legendary Casbah studio (The Vandals, Social Distortion, Berlin), these sessions also yielded a handful of tracks that would appear on the exceedingly rare Skeletons In The Closet LP (No Label Records, 1981). “Zombie Drug Killers,” “No Virgins In Hollywood,” and “American Society” (the short fast loud version covered by L7) appear here as the opening trio on this newly re-sequenced reissue. Geza X is also on board to produce a handful of tracks with peripheral Subtitles including Nicky Beat (germs, Weirdos) among the sessions’ players. The results here are another manifestation of Eddie’s one true love. Even as a punk allegiant, songwriting, sound and style are the priority. The dusted and dark goth-pop of “Magic” and “Stream of Consciousness” are crucial to the plot, setting a unique tone that works in a sea of one-dimensional scene releases, taking full advantage of Geza’s synth-mimicking microtonal guitar techniques. A tribute to Dave Dacron, chief miscreant of Dangerhouse Records’ Rhino 39 is also set to tape as consolation to X, as Dacron’s 16 year old life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident in 1980. But the party rocks on with covers of “Louie Louie” (also appearing on the elusive Fuck You Eddie! single) and “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” as a testament to Eddie’s obsession with the timeless now-sounds of his delinquent adolescence. Friends and fellow freaks JON Blair (of surf cats JON AND THE Nightriders) and Bobby Paine (later of rockabilly hepsters THE Paine Brothers) lend their own song-smithery for four more originals: “Boppin’ Little Bobcat, ”“Treat me Right,” “Gina” (covered in 1984 by Josie Cotton and again in ‘89 by Stray Cats) and “Your Head’s In The Right Place,” respectively. Skeletons In The Closet remains an unusual and rare artifact in the ashtray world of punk, DIY and outsider music, and Slovenly Recordings is blasted to present it to the world one more time.

The Okmoniks recorded and produced every song on this album, and wrote them all with the forgivable exception of one cover by Tucson 60s punk outfit The Grodes. “Afterparty Fever!!!” sounds like a band in 1977 doing their favorite 1966 stompers: devastating dancers like “Don’t Wanna See You No More” and “I’ll Let You In” could fit comfortably in a John Waters teen shimmy montage, giving way to rockers like “He Left the Party with Me” and “Summer Break Up” that could serve as the captions for a comic panel in “Punk” Magazine.

"Jolifanto" takes its name from the first verse of "Karawane", a seminal Dadaist phonetic poem by Hugo Ball. When Ball first recited it in 1916 at the Cabaret Voltaire, both the author and the audience embraced a trance that left Ball exhausted, requiring assistance off the stage as the audience claimed the spotlight.
Over a century later, by a series of fortuitous events, "Jolifanto" is also the title of an album featuring two powerful musical entities. Artists stemming from diverse backgrounds converge with a shared experimental spirit, curiosity and passion for exploration in their music.
"Jolifanto" is an unexpected explosion propelled by (poly)rhythm, expanding into seemingly distant territories under the influence of flamenco. The Dadaist spirit permeates the work, where a constant tension between the improvised and the meticulously planned is evident. ZA! and Perrate together form an organism traveling from the roots to the rave, with nothing sounding out of place because the place is yet to be defined.
Perrate witnessed ZA!'s concert in a festival he attended as part of the audience. The Catalans surprised him with a proposal that he found radical and unclassifiable. Later, after being invited to prepare a collaboration for the Música y Museos season in Seville, Perrate decided to move off the beaten path, approaching ZA!, who quickly embraced the proposal. Exchanges of ideas and audio tracks ensued in a short time and they quickly found out that they were in the same wavelength.A week before the concert, they met in the same physical space for the first time, dedicating a couple of days to composition and preparing the gig at La Mina Studios in Seville. The concert took place, hailed as "the best concert most attendees had experienced in a long time", as reported by the Diario de Sevilla. That energy needed to be captured, and so it was, at the Happy Place studio in Seville, where the album was recorded between March 6th and 9th, 2023.
The Catalan duo ZA!, "the duo that mash up terrace-chant mayhem with... everything else" (The Wire #384), has operated independently and self-managed since their inception in 2004. They overlap genres and amalgamate sounds that move, with intensity, between wild jazz, post-rock and avant-garde electronics, among other influences. In their acclaimed latest work, they have revived the Phoenician language, exploring Mediterranean sounds alongside MegaCobla and Tarta Relena.
Perrate, active since the late 90s, explores the outer edges of flamenco without forsaking its profound essence rooted in lineage and tradition, evident in every note of his voice. His latest work, "Tres golpes" (Lovemonk/El Volcán, 2022), named flamenco album of the year by Babelia/El País, and one of the albums of the year for BBC3's Late Junction, reflects an innate curiosity, possibly the seed of all the fortuitous events leading to this album.
The encounter between Perrate and ZA! is the result of serendipitous events interwoven with the narrative of artists dedicated to experimentation and radicalism in all its forms.

The members of Missiles are no new kids on the block. Now active for about two years plus change and exported from the very metal and punk fertile New Orleans, Total Hell is DD Deth (aka Drew Owen—Sick Thoughts wheelman, Trampoline Team etc) on drums / vocals, Henry Hell (John Henry of Static Static, Heavy Lids) on bass / vocals, and guitarists Jason “Panzer” Craft (Persuaders, Tirefire) and Michael Maniac (Michael He-man of Trampoline Team). If self-deprecation is beyond the listener’s processing skills, then please know that as self-described purveyors of the “New Wave of Shitty Heavy Metal”, Total Hell’s big-boy debut is not “shitty” in any manner whatsoever. These four recordings (“Desecrate”, “Clones From Hell”, “Violator”, and “Disfigured”) are melodic monstrosities that hit with a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling hugeness, while doing so in an economical manner. There will be no mistaking this for Broken Bones screeching out of an iPhone inside the vegan squat. On the flip, this is no Bob Rock joint. DD Deth elaborates: “Recorded on a Tascam 8-track cassette live at home (aka “The Parkway”) by Michael He-Man and the process was a nightmare. Original tape crapped out on us back in early 2020 so we had to redo the whole thing. Intros and interludes were done last minute by me with the cheapest midi keyboard on the net.” Well, color Goner Records impressed. One might get momentarily lost in the cavernous drums that introduce opener “Desecrate”, but soon the buzzsaw-riff-wall will crush one into a smudge on the bathroom floor. Without rocking some safety goggles and diving headfirst down a terminology rabbithole, this is punk jumping into the sack with metal and leaving black boots on the bedroom floor rather than white hightops. Xmas came early for fans of Anti-Cimex, Celtic Frost, pre-shit Discharge, Motörhead, Blitz, Midnight, Venom, Broken Bones and...one gets the picture.

“artificial Peace lasted barely a year, but in that short time managed to become a leading band in the early DC hardcorepunk scene. Pete Murray had played in the short-lived RED C while Mike Manos, ROB Moss and Steve Polcari were in a band called Assault & Battery. Towards the end of 1981 they formed A.P. and began playing around town. They were tight, fast, and aggressive, prerequisites for most of the DC bands of the time, but also had a unique sound and surprisingly catchy songs. I loved the band and offered to record them at Inner Ear Studios. In November 1981 the studio was still a 4-track in the basement of DON ZIENTARA’s family house. The ‘live’ room was actually his children’s playroom, and the mixing desk and tape machine were set up next to the furnace in what could be described as spacious closet. A.P. knocked out their 17 songs in almost no time. I think we recorded, mixed, and sequenced the tape in two or three days and were very happy with the results. There may have been some discussion about putting a few of these songs on a 7” EP, but at that time all of the label’s resources had been put into releasing Flex Your Head, our first full-length album. FYH was a compilation documenting the DC punk scene and since A.P were one of the great young bands coming up at that time, we included three songs from their session. There never was an opportunity to do anything with the other 14 songs as Dischord was poor and, like many of the bands in DC at that time, A.P. was not long for this world. However, before breaking up in the latter half of 1982, A.P. recorded again at CAB studios in Rockville, MD and released those recordings on a split 7” (w/The Exiled). This was the fi rst release on the Fountain of Youth label. After A.P. disbanded, Pete, Steve, and Mike started playing with Kenny Inouye and Andre LEE to form Marginal MAN. That band would release a 12” on Dischord as well as two full-lengths on Gasatanka and Giant respectively and continued playing for seven years. While working on the Dischord Archives, we came across the Artificial Peace November 81 session and decided that the tape should be finally and properly released in its entirety. Artificial Peace may well be an obscure band, but their effect on the DC scene was signifi cant and played a sure role in the evolution of the music.”—Ian MacKaye, 2010

In the Fall of the year 2000, Huntingtons were touring Europe for the first time, opening up for Marky Ramone. Of all the many great European bands to jump on those shows, there was one who left a lasting impression on the guys: The Travoltas. With a unique style of mixing Beach Boys harmonies with "Ramones-core" (a term that wasn't even used yet), they were right up their alley. Josh stayed in touch with singer Perry Leenhouts over the years, with hopes to join forces again someday, either on tour or a split record. 20+ years go by.. no luck again.. until now! Its crazy to think about, but this split is literally 20+ years in the making. Between band breakups, getting back together, moving around the world, and finally, delay after delay from LP manufacturing plants, it was truly a "Rock 'N' Roll Universal International Problem". Overview:
Foam On A Wave is proud to present the first international issue of this chameleonic, shapeshifting record, from one of Hungary's most prolific musician and film composers, János Másik. At times it calls to mind 23 Skidoo, Talking Heads and The Pop Group, at others it sits in its own corner of the room.
1989 was a revolutionary year. For many in the West the fall of the Berlin Wall marked the Autumn of Nations; the End of History and the triumph of progress. In Hungary, the year saw the Round Table Talks establish a new multi-party democracy and the effective end of communist rule after 40 years - Rendszerváltás; 'regime change'.
It's hard to ignore these cataclysms while listening to Trance Balance. After all, its initial release was on Hungaropop, 'one of the first privately owned, independent labels launched after the liberalization of the market in Warsaw Pact-era Hungary' (we highly recommend delving further into their remarkable catalogue). Is music always an expression of the shifting political landscape? Or does it exist beyond it?
These are all questions that percolate as the needle drops. Freud, a ghost from the Dual-Monarchy, runs in streams through the album sleeve. Trance Balance itself is reminiscent of a trip, transporting the individual through a semi-conscious dreamland. Synthesisers woosh and swirl overhead. The percussion is propulsive. Voices take on the guise of characters, guide-like, beckoning. There are Brechtian interludes where the musical fourth wall is punctured. At points, the listener awakes to playful refrains, bohemian folk song and calypso detours. This is a masterwork of musical surrealism - an act of pure intuition - free and honest. A manifesto in all but words. We'll let you decide how much it has to do with politics.

For Wilkes-Barre's One Step Closer - the concept of home is complicated. "I've never felt so distant in my life," vocalist Ryan Savitski screams on the lead single "Pringle Street," a place in his hometown that binds the album's lyrics to both a precise location and feeling of displacement. On their first ever full-length album and debut for Run For Cover This Place You Know, the band offers a modern coming-of-age story about growing up and grasping both the known and the unknown. One Step Closer started in 2016 and in their short five years, Savitski, along with drummer Tommy Norton, bassist Brian Talipan and guitarists Ross Thompson & Grady Allen have come into their own as a modern hardcore mainstay. Their 2019 EP 'From Me To You' countered existing trends in exchange for a more melodic sound in the vein of bands like Turning Point and Title Fight. They went on to open for Have Heart at the band's now legendary reunion shows that summer, and joined bands like Knuckle Puck and Turnstile on tour before pausing to write their debut album. This Place You Know grapples with the weight of themes like isolation, depression, and loss - all amplified by driving bass lines, em-phatic guitar riffs and unwavering drumming performed by the band. One of the best kept secrets of the Italian Hardcore scene. Manimal took shape in the mid-1980s, in the tumultuous era of the roman underground uprising. They’ve been actually one of the first hardcore band – with label mates High Circle - rising from the ashes of the capital city punk scene. In 1985 they’ve been part of the historical German pack altogether with Negazione and Indigesti, a tour that made literally history ! In 1986 they recorded their sole self titled album. The record saw the light on the legendary Contagio Records and was a furious example of the contemporary attack to the system. Eleven tracks in total with three of them previously appeared on "Subject To Blackout," a cultish American tape compilation (with early Offspring, Excel and Attitude Adjustment). No compromise classic Italian Hardcore with fast guitar riffs, elaborate bass lines and hard-hitting drums. A necessary rediscovery that further delineates the greatness of the Italian scene in the early eighties.

First time release with all the songs recorded from this seminal Spanish band. Replica for cover and inside art work. 180 gram vinyl. Espasmódicos were formed in the Malasaña council, Madrid in the first days of 1981. J. Siemens (guitar), Kike (voice) and CSG71 (bass) were the first line-up, completed when Carlos Torero joined them as a drummer. Influenced by the first punk-hc bands coming out but also for some hard-rock elements, soon the first tracks were composed and then, in 1982, the mighty DRO label released their first 7" called "Recomendado para molestar a su vecino", featuring 3 songs that are one of the seminals steps into punk in this country. They had a guest on the person of Karlox from Polansky y El Ardor at the saxophone, something very weird in the bands of that first punk wave. Since the 7" was released the band started to be well known and they went to some Spanish TV shows to promote their work. Carlos Torero decided to leave the band and a studio-session drummer joined in the person of Carlos de Yebra. In 1983 the band recorded their last songs: first they registered the mighty tracks that went on to the great compilation "Punk, qué punk?" released by DRO. This songs were "Tía, vete a cagar" and a free cover-version from Sex Pistols called "Belsen was a gas", something that pointed the band to a weird status as the lyric was something into Nazism or fascism, something that the band never were. The second studio session for that year (and the last ever for the band) was to register their maxi-single "Espasmódicos", five songs together with the great art-work done by J. Siemens and Kike Kruel, very similar to the Crass's stuff and so. Beat Generation, absolutely fan of the band, is more than proud to release this LP with all their discography, together with a replica of the art-work.

“In November of 1982, I went into the studio with Government Issue to record what was to be their first full-length album. Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the master tapes and hearing the songs that had been left off, we thought it would be cool to release the complete session, and to fi nally release the record on Dischord proper. In going through the tapes, I discovered that most of the outtake songs were never mixed, so earlier this year I took the recordings back into the studio. Hearing the separated tracks amazed me. Such great playing and songs! With the technological advances in the recording world making multi-tracking and overdubbing so common, it’s easy to forget that studios could also be used as something more akin to a photo-booth, capturing what was happening at that very moment. Most of the early Dischord sessions were essentially ‘live’ recordings, so the bands had to be able to play, and because the budgets were minuscule, they had to get the songs down in short order. Flex Your Head was first released in January 1982 and was the first full-length album released by Dischord Records. The compilation features thirty-two songs by 11 DC area bands and went a long way towards “putting DC on the map” as one of the era’s great punk scenes. This new edition, which has been re-cut features a cover image of the DC Flag stars and bars (on a red field), an image so associated with DC punk that many mistake it for a made-up symbol for straight edge. This cover image was also used (on a black field) for an edition of the album briefly pressed in conjunction with Alternative Tentacles in the ‘80s.
