Back in 2012, the Jess and the Ancient Ones debut album was an essential part of what was known as the occult rock revival. The band's progress has since then ventured beyond such sub-genres, but the debut remains a cult classic, with its triple guitar NWOBHM-influenced melodies and furious vocal delivery. On this album, the band's lyrical concept is based upon the personal occult experiences of the writers. Combined with music it creates a strong mystical atmosphere.

With the vocal talent Jess as their frontwoman and three guitars in the lineup, Jatao draws inspiration from heavy metal and rock groups of the classic era, such as Mercyful Fate, Roky Erickson, Iron Maiden and Abba. The album was recorded in December 2011 by Necromorbus Studio, known for their previous work with bands such as Watain. The result of these sessions is the eponymous album, a 53-minute moonlight ride into the nether regions of progressive occult heavy rock.

Svart Records releases the new edition of this modern classic on 25 October 2024 as a part of the record label’s 15th anniversary. Jess and the Ancient Ones’ self-titled debut album will be out on CD, black and transparent lime/black marble vinyl. Impossible Light begins where Uboa’s 2019 breakout album The Origin Of My Depression left off—and ends somewhere entirely different. Impossible Light dives fearlessly into queer sexuality, trans embodiment, grief for those who couldn’t make it, solidarity for those facing unimaginable discrimination, the toxic spread of transphobic hatred and misinformation, and the ultimate hope of recovery from trauma and mental anguish. This is a record about the light at the end of the tunnel and the power it takes to keep moving towards it.

But alas, time passed and the fervor 'n' anticipation for that first full-length reached critical mass in the metal underground, taking on almost mythical status (not unlike Sadistic Intent's long-promised debut LP). Finally, it saw the unlight of day in 2015 as Ego Svm Satana: the ultimate GOAT SEMEN statement, in the making for literally a decade, the album became something of a veritable travelogue across the history of South American metal barbarity the prior three decades. The very end, and also the beginning, Ego Svm Satana was suitably CLASSIC, as expected.But, GOAT SEMEN are never one for half measures, and much like that full-length took at least a decade before it emerged from hellfire fully formed, they've only released live albums and a couple splits since then - nothing as substantial as a fully-new recording. Now, nearly a decade after that momentous debut album, GOAT SEMEN return with a comparatively quick-hitting EP in Fuck Christ. Much like its unapologetic & unadorned title, the Peruvian devils waste no time, kicking in immediately with a swirlingly sulfurous maelstrom of classic GOAT SEMEN proportions. For a record that comprises five stout songs in 19 electric minutes, Fuck Christ feels simultaneously longer and quicker than that runtime suggests, so respectively satisfying and urgent is that hammering barbarity. Naturally, it wouldn't be GOAT SEMEN if everything wasn't attacking from every angle all at once, the feeling of imminent implosion lurking around every dark 'n' diseased corner; compared to Ego Svm Satana, Fuck Christ exacerbates that mania to an almost overwhelming degree even when the intensity dips down to a doomed trudge. The 4 songs that make up Monster Squad’s “All Out Of Control” were written during extensive touring and shortly after the band released their influential 2004 LP “Strength Through Pain.” Monster Squad went to legendary Bart Thurber (Spazz, Capitalist Casualties, Neurosis) at House of Faith in Oakland to record the EP. These songs represented a slight departure from the speed that fans got to know on “Strength Through Pain.” The title track “All Out of Control” was a different side for Monster Squad, showcasing more anthemic (and much slower) songs than the breakneck, frenetic pace of their previous works. The band utilized ‘call and response’ vocal patterns which quickly became and remains one of the band’s most popular songs. The band continued to explore new ideas, such as incorporating a cowbell on “Church and State,” which talks about the overwhelming presence and oppression that organized religion has in politics. “Gotta Get Out” focuses on the ruts people find themselves in - nowhere to go to escape daily life with the inability to control anxious and hopeless feelings “All Out Of Control” has been out of print since 2006 and fans have been clamoring for a reissue for many years. This new 12” 45rpm version, remastered by Jack Shirley (Sweat, Deafheaven, Gouge Away) at The Atomic Garden, has a completely new layout. Monster Squad used images from the photo session of the original release and scans of the original lyric sheets written in 2005. The band also stumbled upon a collage from 1982 that the legendary collage maestro Winston Smith (Dead Kennedys, etc) made, titled “Security Control” which was a perfect fit, and is included in this new artwork. The record also includes a double-sided 11x17 poster of the MS/APG red skull image + a collage designed by the band’s long-time friend Amanda Chavez. Netherworld marks a considerable step onwards from the territory that Louise Patricia Crane explored on her debut long player Deep Blue, crafting audial landscapes that go further into both inner and outer space; hallucinatory and surrealistic yet also grittier and more direct. For all that this stemmed in part from early Genesis and The Beatles, Netherworld also sits in alignment with the luxurious but oddly intimate realm of modern classics, by the likes of Tears For Fears, Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell, with passionate intensity set in a bold, cinematic vista. In realising these romantic and expansive visions, Crane not only wrote or co-wrote the entire album, but arranged, co-produced and played a wide variety of instruments on it. Yet as a supporting cast, she has surrounded herself with a formidable selection of mercurial contributors. Once again, Jakko M. Jakszyk (King Crimson) brings his fiery and mellifluous solo guitar work, as well as contributing backing vocals, keyboards and co-production. Elsewhere, the flute soliloquies of Tiny Bard are the work of Jethro Tull’s Ian Andersonwhile saxophone duties are handled by Mel Collins, whose work with King Crimson marks only one chapter in an incredibly storied life in music. Providing violin and viola across the stylistic expanse of the album, Shir-Ran Yinon (New Model Army / Eluveitie) returns as a collaborator. The rhythm section for the lion's share of the record consists of the dream team of Tony Levin (King Crimson / Peter Gabriel) and Gary Husband (John McLaughlin / Billy Cobham / Allan Holdsworth) with Nick Beggs stepping in on bass for Dance With The Devil and upright bass on Long Kiss Goodnight. Crucially however, even amidst this kind of company, Louise’s voice and vision is never remotely overshadowed—with the talents on offer only serving to make the backdrop to her songs still more vivid, sharp and intense. In as much as Netherworld is a work that exists on a lineage of progressive music and the visionary artists who’ve expanded their boundaries of exploration to form sound-worlds as big as their imagination, it’s also a work of magical realism in the tradition of Pan’s Labyrinth, The Company Of Wolves or the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Haruki Murakami—in which the supernatural and otherworldly, lead to a shortcut to the essence of being human. Time is a slippery fish.

Loss has inspired Mamaleek’s latest full-length album, titled Vida Blue. This marks the San Francisco Bay Area metal deconstructionists’ eighth album and their third as a full lineup.

Tragedy struck in March of 2023 when the band lost a longtime friend and member, keyboardist Eric Livingston, leaving the group, which began as a duo of two brothers and later expanded to a five-piece, now with only four members. Despite this profound loss, Mamaleek persevered, performing as a quartet at various festivals, including the 2023 edition of Tilburg.

The band returned to the studio to create new material that appropriately reflects their journey through loss and honors their fallen comrade. The resulting album draws inspiration from the legacy of Oakland A’s baseball legend Vida Blue, whose former team coincidentally announced its relocation to Las Vegas that same year. The band members themselves describe this poignant chapter in their own words:

“Time is a slippery fish. Maybe only someone like Vida could grasp it. Although he’s left time behind, his image and that lefty heat remain in the memories of many. Eventually they’ll be forgotten, and hopefully replaced with even more exultant ones. This musical recording is a reflection on loss and its acceptance. We explore several examples for each song, including the loss of pride, of money, of glory, of country, of sanity, of a favorite sports team, of significant others, and, every day, one’s self. It also explores various associated moods—fear, panic, reverence, stoicism, and steadfastness—to arrive at a resolution: Loss is only a test, the glue that holds and erodes each memory, the connection that binds and loosens us all, pitch by pitch, inning by inning. This is your celebration.”

Vida Blue is a person, moment, and memory, together the crystallization of apocalypse: “unveiling,” “disclosure.”

Los Angeles-based dark melodic metal outfit Witherfall proudly presents their fourth full-length, “Sounds Of The Forgotten”, via DeathWave Records. With predecessor "Curse Of Autumn" garnering high praise in Metal Insider, Deaf Forever, and KNAC.com, as well as admirable positions on Germany’s Top 20 Albums chart and Billboard’s Top New Artist Albums and Billboard 100 chart, “Sounds Of The Forgotten" advances Witherfall to legendary status with its epic, foreboding expanse. The album is supported by an ambitious schedule of seven singles, each with an official video linking the album’s story of heartbreak, anger, and tenacity. This is genuinely Witherfall, always willing to go the extra mile to outclass the past.

Witherfall was formed in Los Angeles in 2013. Joseph Michael (also of Sanctuary fame) and Jake Dreyer (ex-Iced Earth/Demons & Wizards) built their new band around drummer Adam Sagan (rip) and accomplished bassist Anthony Crawford (Allan Holdsworth, Chon). Since then, the group have released three highly regarded albums: "Nocturnes And Requiems" (2017), "A Prelude To Sorrow" (2018), and "Curse Of Autumn" (2021) and an EP "Vintage" (2019). Not one to cut corners, Witherfall enlisted famed drummer Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, Jordan Rudess) on "Curse Of Autumn", ensuring the foundations of singles 'As I Lie Awake', 'The Other Side Of Fear', and 'The River' were second to none. On "Sounds Of The Forgotten", Minnemann returns to the fold with an album-only appearance, while drummer Chris Tsaganeas (Wax Owls) and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Hirschfeld (Willie Nelson) Witherfall’s newest permanent members.

‘San Vito’ is the new album from the Ivor Novello award-winning & multi-platinum selling UK indie-pop band The Feeling.

The album was written and recorded in Southern Italy and saw the band decamp there to self-produce the record as a band together. What began as a short writing trip, turned into a full album project with the Italian sun, food and culture seeping through into the sounds on the record. The band brought in local brass, strings and pizzica / tarantella percussion players – the result being very much an album by The Feeling but with a subtle Salento flavour mixed-in.

The title ‘San Vito’ is influenced by the name of the local town San Vito Dei Normanni where the band spent their time off from the studio soaking in the local culture, food and pizzica music. Highlights include lead single ‘The Right Wrong’ – a driving indie-pop anthem about freeing yourself from judgement, a gorgeous duet with US-based country singer Lucie Silvas & plenty of the flamboyant, upbeat 70s-inspired harmonised indie-pop that the band are adored for.
