Described by Matthew Garbutt on AllMusic as "one of Mexico's national cultural treasures", the award-winning drummer, composer, arranger, and bandleader Tino Contreras (1924-2021) recorded and performed internationally for more than 60 years. Blending Latin American music with jazz, he created his own original and adventurous sound. In 1957, Contreras formed his first quartet, which reflected an almost bewildering range of influences. Some key albums from this period include Jazz Tropical (presented here) and Jazz a Paris (both from 1962), Jazz Ballet (1963), and Misa en Jazz (1966). All throughout his extended career, Contreras remained a champion of the jazz form in Mexico, winning the National Festival of Jazz award each year between 1959 and 1966. Berlin-based duo TRAINING team up with bassist Ruth Goller for their new album ‘threads to knot’. Frenetic free-jazz is sitting next to post-rock riffs and looming microtonal atmospheres.
The record was written in a truly collaborative effort, adapting the concept of ‘cadavre exquis’, the popular drawing game: One person would start writing a few notes before passing it on to the next, revealing only the very last note, with which the composition continues.
TRAINING is comprised of drummer Max Andrzejewski and sax player Johannes Schleiermacher, whose last album ‘Three Seconds’ saw them collaborate with Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich.

The Italian Library Songbook series, where contemporary producers and songwriters breathe new life in-to hidden tracks and outtakes from Italian soundtrack maestros, is back with its second installment.

This time, beat-maker and bass player Moonbrew, along with composer and keyboardist Paolo Apollo Negri, reimagine the iconic Piero Umiliani, whose influence resonates deeply with anyone who grew up with a passion for b-movies, library music, and soundtracks.

Joined by singer-songwriter Tilde, the duo put their unique spin on Umiliani’s “Nel Villaggio” (featured on side B of this release), an instrumental piece from his 1975 library album Continente Nero. The hypnotic marimba melody that opens the original track serves as the foundation for their reinterpretation. By sam-pling the marimba and combining it with synthesizers and a fresh beat, they create the perfect backdrop for Tilde’s vocals, giving birth to a new ethereal and dreamy song titled “As If It Matters” (on side A).

Joining the dots between the Seventies and today, Italian Library Songbook - Volume II pays tribute to Umiliani’s signature sound while firmly grounding the music in the present. Once again, the artwork is by graphic designer and calligrapher Luca Barcellona, who drew inspiration from elegantly bound classics book series to evoke the tactile element that makes vinyl records so unique and precious.

London-based keyboardist and composer Greg Foat is back with his new album, 'The Rituals of Infinity'. Greg's first memory with the piano goes all the way back to his Aunt's house at aged 3 - where he fell off the piano stool. Since then, his relationship with the piano has evolved into a fulfilling, and successful career. He began taking an interest in composing at the age of 11, and truly ignited his love for Jazz after attending a workshop with Jeff Clyne, Olaf Vas, Trevor Tomkins and Nick Weldon at the age of 15. He then studied jazz at Middlesex University, followed by 6 months in Sweden on an Erasmus grant which lead to his first professional studio session there at 21. Greg has worked as a professional musician ever since, and has moulded and wonderfully multifaceted career within the Jazz music genre. Greg is planning a debut performance of 'The Rituals of Infinity' at Worthy Earth Festival in late September, in Hampshire.

'The Rituals of Infinity' album is inspired by many of things. Some titles are named after some iconic science fiction books such as The Rituals Of Infinity, A Private Cosmos, The Dark Labyrinth and The World of the Red Sun. Minerva's Owl, on the other hand, is about the Ancient Greek Legend. "The owl of Minerva takes flight only at dusk." so wrote G. W. F. Hegel, the nineteenth century's major philosopher of history. By that he meant that any given phase of history can be understood only in retrospect — after it's over. A beautifully fitting closing of the album. The album features the legendary Art Themen on Soprano and Tenor Saxophones, Trevor Walker on Trumper and Flugel Horn in a fine supportive role harmonising with Katherine Farnden on Cor Anglais. Natcyet Wakili has such a fluid approach to the drums which really makes the album special, alongside Jasper Osbourne on Bass Guitar. Shawn Lee also stopped by the studio with his horror movie classic waterphone - adding some eery atmospheric finishing touches to the album.

Caixa Cubo have been playing together for over 14 years - and that’s ‘playing’ in the truest sense of the word. As bassist Noa Stroeter explains:

“A story, a joke, images, invented words, people we met on tour, places, fictitious or not, have always been part of our creative process. And they are precious materials beyond the musical work itself. This dynamic has stayed with us to this day, and for me it is the characteristic that guarantees that no matter what, we will have fun working.”

The first track, "51 Card Solitaire," begins abruptly in mid-flight, capturing the exact moment that recording began, as the trio played together for the very first time. The level of group interaction revealed in these 7 tracks is truly startling. Isak Hedtjärn plays the clarinet — a straight, metal variant of the more common wooden B flat Clarinet. Kvarpan is Isak’s first ‘solo’ record, but you also hear him in ‘quartet’ with himself, too on this diverse suite of improvisations recorded ‘on location’ on a single day at Patons Malmgård — his usual practice spot just by where the ferries head over to Finland. We recorded until the throb of the boats and waiting cars took over.

A polymath of undeniable musicality, Isak is a constant, always invigorating presence across a breadth of ‘scenes’ in Stockholm be it via in his own groups — Grismask, Svenska Folkjazzkvartetten, Festen — or making guest appearances in concert and on record with Viagra Boys, Fire! Orchestra, Rotem Geffen, Kali Malone and many many more. His online notoriety as @JazzIsak, the deft editor of a stream of classic jazz and tiktok dance/crash mashups is not only a riotous good time but gives you some other small window into the scope and scale of his knowledge of and feeling for all the music that has gone before.

His own notes to the record point specifically to clarinettists Johnny Dodds, Perry Robinson, Jimmy Giuffre and Sükrü Tunar and acknowledge the abiding mentorship of Harald Hult, Raymond Strid, Christer Bothén and especially Roland Keijser, the saxophonist and founder of legendary progg combo Arbete och Fritid and a veritable living library of international folk melodies until his passing in 2019. On Kvarpan Hedtjärn renders these influences in his own way — deeply personal, alluring and strange. As Mats Gustafsson says in his notes to the record “This ain’t no normal slang med halka”.

Jazz is an art form that routinely asks performers to be the guy behind the guy. Louie, Basie, Dizzy all played for others before they became names themselves. Another famous guy behind the guy, Teo Macero, has a little less complicated, but he had more to do with shaping and re-shaping modern music than just his work with Charles Mingus. Part of the reason “Take Five” is considered one of the most famous songs of the 20th century is how Dave Brubeck and his Quartet played it, but it’s also because Macero was behind the glass, slowly turning knobs moving things up at some points, and down at others. It would be enough to produce Time Out, but he also helped mold Thelonious Monk’s sound during his time on Columbia in the 1960s into one of the master’s most fruitful periods. The man also produced Bitches Brew — yes, Bitches Brew, too! Macero isn’t one of the marquee names in the Bible of American Music, but he was an apostle for several of its greatest prophets. Then, in 1957, came Teo. Macero’s warm tenor sax playing is a big part of that, but so is Mal Waldron’s piano, Teddy Charles on the vibraphone, Jerry Segal on drums, and, trusted Mose Allison sideman. Everybody on this album knew exactly what they were meant to do, and they came together to create something lovely that deserves more appreciation than it has been given since its release in ’57.

Sdban Records is proud to present Doo's Blues, a collection of previously unreleased radio recordings capturing Serbian jazz trumpeter, composer and band leader Dusko Goykovich (1931-2023) at the moment he definitively established himself as one of Europe's most distinctive jazz artists.

Dusko Goykovich was born and raised in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the time part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He studied at the Belgrade Music Academy from 1948 to 1953, playing trumpet in Dixieland bands and joining the big band of Radio Belgrade at the age of 18. After leaving Yugoslavia in 1956, Goykovich spent the next ten years developing his sound. Moving to Frankfurt he first established himself on the West German jazz scene, where he played with the renowned big bands of Kurt Edelhagen and Kenny Clarke & Francy Boland. Then, after appearances at the world's largest jazz festivals such as Comblain-la-Tour in Belgium, Antibes in France and Newport, Goykovich moved stateside where he spent four years studying at the world famous Berklee College and worked with the likes of Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson.

Returning to Europe in the mid-sixties Goykovich soon introduced the world to his innovative Balkan jazz sound with Swinging Macedonia (1966), an album characterised by the melancholic melodies and sophisticated rhythms reminiscent of his native land. Today Swinging Macedonia still stands as one of the most important and sought-after works of European folk inspired jazz and demonstrates how Goykovich was not merely an excellent instrumentalist, but also a gifted composer and versatile artist in his own right.

Not long after Swinging Macedonia's release Goykovich was invited to record two sessions for BRT (Belgian Radio & TV), which he performed with three different ensembles. For the first session, recorded in late January of 1967, Goykovich was accompanied by Belgian vibraphonist Fats Sadi's quartet. Later that same day Goykovich was also joined by the BRT Jazzorkest, Belgium national radio's in-house jazz orchestra then playing under the direction of alto saxophonist Etienne Verschueren. Less than two months later Goykovich found himself once again ensconced in BRT's Brussels studios, this time heading up an international quintet that also included Bent Jædig (tenor saxophone and flute), Scott Bradford (piano), Jimmy Woode (bass) and Al Jones (drums).

Whilst the metaphor 'jazz with an accent' has been widely used to describe the music that European jazz artists created in the 1950s and 1960s, it fails to do justice to the entirely new language that Dusko Goykovich was developing. No mere dialect Goykovich's jazz was a delicate, multi-layered language, one that owed just as much to the folk music of the Balkans as it did to the modern music of America. And to the blues. For this is Doo's Blues.

Sdban Records is an independent, groove-obsessed record label based in Ghent, Belgium. The label started off as a 60's and 70's compilation and reissue label. The very first release, the acclaimed 'Funky Chicken: Belgian Grooves from the 70's', was a milestone right away. Recent releases include reissues and retrospective compilations from artists like André Brasseur, René Costy, and Jack Sels, as well as the compilations 'The Belgian Soundtrack' and 'Hip Holland Hip', which respectively cover the musical connection of Belgium with cinema and modern jazz in the Netherlands between 1950 and 1970. Doo's Blues was compiled by Lander Lenaerts, a DJ and writer who plays an important part in documenting the rich jazz history Belgium has to offer.

Peridot' dives right in, and so I will. It’s a gemstone, peridot, and may become your favorite gemstone (as it has mine since I’ve dug in to its history and cultural significance). I like volcanoes and volcanic land formations. 'Peridot,' the musical piece presented here by Powers/rolin, is soundtrack to memories of in-person witnessed lava floes and the infinite parade of Herzogian docu-footage of rivers of fire and constructive destruction. There are edits or augmentations evident, creating (or revealing) form, in the tradition of Teo Macero’s work on In A Silent Way. Because rarely does the beauty of a musical moment survive the translation from performance to recording without losing that crucial thing that made it a once-in-a-lifetime happening without judicious and usually minimal manipulation. We overdub, we mix, we edit. We master, we distribute. If you’ve ever been out in the woods with some friends and come upon a little place in a creek that’s just big enough to get in for something resembling a ‘swim’ but is more like a ‘dip’, and no-one has brought costumes designed explicitly for swimming so some begin to disrobe completely, and then you do too even though you feel awkward and never really wanted to be naked around these people (or, really, almost anyone) but do it anyway, and the embarrassment never really goes away during the whole time you luxuriate in the cold water but almost does again and again as something in you realizes that this is the best and greatest juxtaposition of flesh with moving water that could ever have happened, if this has occurred to you in your life then now you have musical accompaniment for the sorting-through of that memory. In recent years, again and again, Powers/Rolin does it right & natural, and somehow I always think of sunlight and ’sunlight’ simultaneously when I listen to their recorded work. When asked about the title of her new record, “Amor”, Limpe bluntly responded, “because it’s everything”. Being a Beatles fan from the very beginning, she’s well aware that “all you need is love”, but there’s more to her sentiment than a corny pun. On the one hand, she’s more than half a century into her musical career, and describes the relationship towards her instruments in terms of an ongoing and deepening love affair. “Be it my piano, my viola or my percussion instruments, they’re all far more than just wooden caskets, they’re living entities, they need to be tended and cared for, they’re resonating with me and when engaging with them while playing I respond to their momentary being – and they alter my body and soul all the same.” So, it’s about time for a love letter to her percussion instruments and the act of drumming and listening to her drums, which can be heard as “Trommeln” on the second to last track on “Amor”. We also get to learn about “Verliebte Autos im Wald” – a poem by Augusta Laar, Limpe recites during the closing track to “Amor”. What may come across as a goofy nursery rhyme at first is indeed testament to Limpe’s longstanding animistic beliefs, her imagination towards everything around her. “It may sound wonky, but it’s as simple as it’s true and it’s important to love yourself and everything around you – at least I try to do so the best I can, and sometimes I fail, sure.” And, again, if you think about it, it’s not much of a surprise, she’s singing about cars, the vehicles that since decades get her and her instruments from gig to gig, all across Europe. But it’s not all just about the material world around her, of course. So, on the other hand and for the most part, “Amor” reflects on love as an interpersonal and spiritual experience. Drawing inspiration from such different authors as Giordano Bruno, Hilde Domin and Serge Kahili King, “Amor” is a record of compositions one could almost call “songs” although they’re far from being performed in a conventional way. It is also Limpe Fuchs’ most openly insightful and vulnerable record to date. As curious as ever, in her light-hearted yet thoughtful manner she explores the upsides and downsides of what it means to be loved or not loved: “At times it’s also sad, that love is the only way, but it is – at least it’s what I experienced and experience to this day.” (Holger Adam)

Black Truffle is pleased to announce the first vinyl reissue of Trancedance, a wild slice of Swedish Afro-fusion from Christer Bothén, originally released in 1984. A major figure in Swedish jazz and improvised music since the 1970s, often heard on bass clarinet and tenor sax, Bothen studied doso n’koni (the large six-stringed ‘hunter’s harp’ of the Wasulu) in Mali in 1971-2 before turning to the guinbri (the three-stringed lute of the Gnawa/Gnauoua) in Marakesh later in the decade. In between, he performed extensively with Don Cherry during his Organic Music Society period and taught Cherry the doso n’koni. In the later 70s and 80s he worked with the most important figures in the distinctive Swedish jazz-rock-world fusion scene, joining Archimedes Badkar for their African-influenced Tre and participating in Bengt Berger’s legendary Bitter Funeral Beer Band. Many of the musicians who played on the Bitter Funeral Beer Band’s ECM LP (including Berger on drums, Anita Livstrand on voice and percussion and Tord Bengstsson on piano, violin and guitar) joined Bothén for one of the sessions that produced Trancedance, the first release under his own name, dedicated to his compositions. The other session introduced his seven-piece group Bolon Bata, heard on the second track of each side. The title track opens the album with the rubbery buzzing strings of the doso n’goni playing a hypnotic ten beat pattern, soon joined by bass and piano before the entire nine-piece group kicks in with a rollicking Afro-jazz workout, Berger’s drums driving an intricate, winding melodic line played by the horns with Mattias Helden’s cello throwing in pizzicato slides and smears. Bothén then takes centre stage on tenor sax, soloing with a wide, vibrating tone and moving seamlessly from soaring melodies to guttural stutters. After a return to the composed horn lines and a solo from Elsie Petrén on alto sax, the piece builds to an ecstatic conclusion of yelping voices and handclaps, gradually simmering down to return to the solo doso n’koni where it began.

The hypnotic sounds of the hunter’s harp carries over to ‘Mimouna’, where it is joined by Bothen’s overdubbed guinbri. The piece develops into a haunting whispered and sung invocation, gradually building momentum until the organic textures of strings, voices, and hand percussion are ruptured by Lennart Söderlund’s distorted guitar, which brings an unmistakable touch of 1984 to the otherwise timeless sound. Joined by chicken scratch guitar and increasingly dominated by the insistent clang of three of Bolon Bata’s members on karqab (a kind of cast-iron castanet), the grove develops frenetically.

The B side opens with the multi-part epic ‘9+10 Moving Pictures for the Ear’, at over 16 minutes the record’s longest piece. Though Bothen is heard only on horns on this piece, the hypnotic repeating bass line carries on the first side’s link to African musical traditions. Using an expanded 16-piece ensemble, the music balances untethered improvisation with carefully arranged passages of knotty ensemble playing that at points suggest Mingus, Moacir Santos or some of the ambitious post-free work being done in the same years by figures like David Murray or Henry Threadgill. The piece ends with a triumphant passage of looping unison melody reminiscent of the Scandinavian folk explorations of Arbete och Fritid (whose Kjell Westling is heard on bass clarinet and soprano sax here). The sound of Bjorn Lundqvist’s fretless bass introduces the odd left turn made by the record’s final track, a spaced-out expedition into bluesy horn lines and distant guitar atmospherics set to a semi-reggae beat, perfumed by the core Bolon Bata group and bearing the appropriate title of ‘The Horizon Stroller’. A must for fans of the Swedish scene around groups like Arbete och Fritid and Archimedes Badkar, as well as any listener who has been seduced by Louis Moholo’s Spirits Rejoice!, The Brotherhood of Breath, or, more recently, the guinbri grooves of Natural Information Society, Trancedance is a lost classic ripe for rediscovery.

Staying ahead of themselves was always important, and tricky too: they were on the (musical) trail of someone who preceded them, was ahead of himself, or at least ahead of his own epoch, the late 1950s, and theirs, the late 20th and early 21st century, in which he was, before they found him (or he found them, the way music finds you — and finds you out) present as no more than a discographical evanescence. And to complicate things further, the way they talked about what they were doing as they proceeded along that trail, you’d think they were archaeologists (and not anthropologists), or geologists (and not ethnographers), as well as exemplars of whatever discipline it is through which the capacity for inhabiting and transforming the body, the corpus, of another takes place: ‘We excavate and reinhabit documents and fragments of plans and compositions that he left behind to make music that though it originated in the 20th century will speak to the 21st’. They said that, on the back, or the strength, of their first album, and it was enough to make you wonder where in the world it was that they started from, what their point(s) of departure might have been."

Announcing the debut album from one of London’s most electrifying acts, New Regency Orchestra. An 18-piece Afro-Cuban big band, inspired by the musical melting pot of NYC in the 1950s, but with the punch and power of a whole host of London’s best Latin and jazz musicians. Blowing new life into these compositions, the album is a reimagining of some of the finest music from that golden era. From early 1950s René Hernandez and Tito Puente, through to the 1970s salsa of Rafael Labasta and Orlando Marin, produced and performed with fresh fire.

NRO is the brainchild of its artistic director, and the man behind Total Refreshment Centre and co-founder of Church of Sound, Lex Blondin. Through a long-held passion for jazz, Lex discovered the explosive Afro-Cuban rhythms of mid-1940s NYC via the godfather of Afro-Cuban jazz, Mario Bauzá. A time when two musical worlds collided in a fusion of creativity and energy, jazz luminaries like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker joining forces with Cuban greats like Machito and Chano Pozo. This vibrant sound was music to dance to and found a home at The New York Palladium, a formative space of freedom and expression that was key to the scene’s development.

Although dance-focussed in their makeup, those early recordings are not often heard in modern club environments and Lex dreamt of retelling their story with a contemporary dynamism. A slice of serendipity followed, as a slot at a new festival opened up and Lex jumped at the chance to make this idea a reality, an 18-piece big band breathing new life into these beloved songs.

Enlisting the expertise of some of the capital’s finest talent, Lex and co-captain Andy Wood, of Como No fame, put together a world-class line-up of talent. Bringing in Eliane Correa as musical director and bandleader, a fluid and interchanging 18-piece band was formed.

The album itself is a hand-picked selection of timeless Afro-Cuban jazz classics, reimagined with NRO’s unbridled energy. It contains ten incredible instrumental tracks including 'Pregon' with its anthemic horn stabs and the addictive head nod bounce of 'Mambo Rama', alongside two scorching vocal numbers in 'Papa Boco' and 'Labasta Llego'. Coupling a heavyweight rhythm section with a wall of horns, they provide a fresh spin on songs from Tito Puente and Chico O'Farrill, René Hernandez through to Rafael Labasta.

“Some of the tunes like Tito Puente’s ‘Mambo Rama’ and ‘Scarlet Mambo’ might sound like they went to a gym as extra drums and bass synth were added to them whilst the tune ‘Sahib & Tito’ is a mix of Tito’s ‘Mambo Buda’ and Sahib Shihab’s ‘Nus’. Our intention is to be both respectful to the innovators and inventors of this incredible music and to pay our dues, but also to add something special from London where the city’s new jazz scene connects with its Latin American musicians and the musical influences around us.”

"For a few years in the late sixties and early seventies Richard Cam & Bert ruled MacDougal St. walking a fine line between the increasingly commercialized demands created by groups like Crosby Stills and Nash and the fierce integrity of earlier folk performers, the generation to which Richard belonged. They managed this with great aplomb, producing original tunes of great integrity and obvious folkloric origins, as well as those which expressed the anarchic omnipresent psychedelia of the moment. They also never abandoned the idea of including some traditional material in their performances. But for the usual random application of luck they could have been very big." Richard Tucker, Campbell Bruce, and Bert Lee coalesced as a trio in the spring of 1968, and by the end of that year had become regular performers at fabled Greenwich Village nightspots The Gaslight, The Bag I’m In, Cafe Feenjon, among others. But mostly they were street singers, busking regularly in Central Park. Their only LP, Limited Edition, was released in 1970, and sold mainly at gigs and on the street. Somewhere in The Stars compiles earlier, previously unreleased recordings, when all three members were signed with PeerSouthern Music publishers as writers and began using their studio to make demos and experiment musically. Beautifully recorded by house engineer Charlie Mack (supervised by Jimmy Ienner), the demos capture a back room casualness and rustic, homespun quality. For me, listening to their songs and harmonies is like entering a world you always hoped existed but had never experienced.

Some of the songs were rerecorded the following year for Limited Edition, but many are heard here for the first time. Among them is the original demo for Richard Tucker's song, "Are You Leaving For The Country", which Karen Dalton covered on her seminal 1971 release, In My Own Time. Richard and Karen were husband and wife for much of the 1960s, performing as a duo (initially as a trio with Tim Hardin), and navigating their time on the Village scene while alternating living in a small mining town outside Boulder, Co. before splitting up in 1967. Also making its debut, is the only song Richard and Karen ever wrote together, the haunting "Sleeping In The Garden". Also contains two epic songs by Cam ("One Of These First Nights", and "Stockholm") not on their LP, but staples of their live performances, and noted in a gig review by The New York Times, and in a column by future A&R hero, Karin Berg, who was an early champion. Another rarity is the only cover of "Sweet Mama" by Fred Neil we’ve ever heard.

Campell Bruce came to New York in 1967 as lead singer with a band from Washington, DC, The Natty Bumpo. They’d recently signed a record deal with Phillips, but were falling apart. Cam landed in the Village with an acoustic guitar and first started playing and singing in the basket houses, and shortly thereafter at The Gaslight, as the "Cam Bruce Trio” (which included Collin Walcott). After opening for Mose Allison, Cam's hero, the trio went their separate ways, and Cam returned to regular solo gigs at The Flamenco, and the basket houses on Bleecker. Richard and Cam met up on that scene and quickly found a musical kinship as well as becoming best pals.

Bert Lee arrived in New York as a runaway the following winter, and began playing and sleeping wherever he could. His sometime accompanist, Ron Price, introduced Bert to Richard and Cam just as Bert’s own songs were garnering attention from publishers. According to Bert, “I arrived on the New York scene during a time of great change, and it was the notion of change that influenced me. All around me I saw there were two sorts of songwriters, on the one hand dedicated to the traditions that had inspired them, folk, jazz, the American songbook. On the other hand were songwriters influenced by the wave of experimentation that The Beatles were the perfect example of. Mixing genres, writing lyrics that weren't just about ordinary love and loss.

Richard Tucker was a country blues player, with a relaxed and melodic approach to the craft. Cam wrote something more akin to soul songs, with a hint of jazz in the changes. I was writing tunes that sometimes drew on classical structures with a tendency toward what I suppose would be known as progrock. But I was rather adamant about not being pinned down stylistically, and so I would write, for example, a song based on some complex classical chord structure, and then go right ahead and write a simple folk song, like Evelyn. Our band was popular locally, and it was this variety that made it distinct.”

Delmore is excited to present this unearthed treasure, fifteen years in the making. In the words of Richard Tucker, "Tap on your knee, roll on the floor; if you aint free, what's it all for?"

In 1969 R,C&B, myself, Charles John Quarto, David Bromberg, Ron Price, and Keith Sykes were just a few of that year's crop of songslingers. We were young turks back then, out on the prowl in New York's Greenwich Village for record deals, gigs, and beautiful young women to sleep with and maybe even write a song about. Hailing from the city of Miami, Fat Produce is the newest name in the game, building on classic soul jazz with a modern twist. Led by two Studio City, CA natives, Addison Rifkind on guitar and Michael Duffy on drums, this duo, alongside upright bass, is a guaranteed head-nodder that breathes new life into the guitar trio format. Fat Produce is proud to release their debut, funk-filled 45, “Sticky Beets b/w SON!” Following the lineage of classic soul jazz songwriting, “Sticky Beets” kicks off side A with a familiar feel, but one that’s uniquely Fat Produce. Taking the language of Idris Muhammad and Clyde Stubblefield, drummer Michael Duffy molded these two icons into his own vocabulary that blends seamlessly with Addison Rifkind's Grant Green, Boogaloo Joe Jones, and George Benson-inspired melodic form. The feel encompasses The JB’s original lineup but with a signature Fat Produce funk. Written during Rifkind’s and Duffy’s weekly rehearsal and writing sessions, “Sticky Beets” is a collaborative effort highlighting their many influences in the classic soul jazz realm. On the flip, side B’s “SON!” takes things up a notch with a swamp funk etude transformed into a bonafide funk banger. This tune emerged from a riff Rifkind was shedding during one writing session. When Duffy heard this line, inspiration struck. He quickly jumped on the kit and asked Rifkind to keep looping it. Duffy then experimented with several Bay-Area-inspired funk grooves, and boom just like that, the A and B sections were born. With the gritty and almost country-funk hook, intricate drum feel, and bouncing upright bass break, “SON!” is a fresh take on what the classic guitar trio can do.

Recorded wholly at ATA Studios and produced by label head, Neil Innes, I Too Am A Stranger features the Sorcerers trio, (lead by Neil Innes) of Joost Hendrickx/Neil Innes/Richard Ormrod, with assistance from regular percussion collaborator Danny Templeman and up-and-coming Leeds trumpeter Olivia Cuthill. Joost and Neil's drum and bass bond is tighter than ever, and Richard is given free rein on baritone and alto saxophones, flutes, bass clarinet, vibes, and the wonderland that is the ATA vintage keyboard collection.
I Too Am A Stranger is a resolutely maximal endeavour, a layered recording both sonically and via many interwoven influences: as ever, the Ethiopique sound is front and centre [Bebaynetu, Kid Mahout, She Who Perceives The Sounds Of The World], but there are also references to the declamatory baritone sax-heavy chanbara soundtracks of Fumio Hayasaka [Yasuke In Roppongi, Oromo Moon], the fuzzed-out vibes sound of Vibrafinger-era Gary Burton [side openers The Warrior Code and He Who Kills With One Leap], and Moondog's popping woodblocks [Moth, The Dao Of The Sorcerers].
In truth, there is so much on this album to appeal to so many different listeners: tight – and new! – beats, exotic melody, far-out horns, references from within and without the worlds of Jazz, Library, Ethio, etc etc, as well as the wholly analogue ATA sound that satisfies DJs and audiophiles alike.

The Norwegian jazz-rock quartet The Verge met at the legendary Norwegian jazz school NTNU, and did their first concerts in 2019. The band consists of four still up-and-coming musicians who are all active members of the Norwegian and European jazz, improv and rock scene. Emil, Aksel, Alf and Ingvald have, as The Verge, only done some humble touring in Norway until this point, but recorded a truly vital and original album in Duper Studio in 2021. This was done with the aspiring young producer Vegard Lemme, and the album is now being released on the also Bergen-based label Is It Jazz? Records.The album consists of seven original tracks composed by the different members of the band, which all sound very different from each other. Sonic landscapes that vary from fiery melodic jazz music to hysterical prog rock, atmospheric free-improvisation and heavy riffs are what define The Verge’s debut record. The hypnotic album encompasses a lot of different styles, but the ability of the four instrumentalists to weave it all together in a seamless manner makes it all take on a coherent form. Grounded was initially recorded as the first track of what was to become Crickets II by my NYC-based ensemble Crickets, and the follow up to the album of the same name from 2018. The track was recorded remotely from locations literally across the world in Winter of 2020/2021, which everyone knows was a time of minimal in-person recording opportunity. As the band further spread out over the next year, this consequently was the only documentation of the new material I had written for the group featuring Anna Webber, Josh Sinton, Ed Rosenberg, Jonathan Goldberger, and Devin Gray. Perhaps a reunion is a possibility down the line, but for now I'm thrilled to present this final Crickets track on the 5th anniversary of the original album's release.

Included here in digital format is Crickets (ooyh 001) from 2018 for the first time in HD at 88.2 kHz/24-bit, and the new track Grounded which will release on October 19, 2023. TJ Huff gave the album art a sweet redesign for the 5th anniversary LP release, in line with his more recent Ooyh artwork. TJ also did the awesome single cover for Grounded in the 90s skateboard art style we initially conceived as the look for Ooyh Records. All of the tracks featured on this page are included as part of the 5th anniversary LP release.

As with all albums on Shabaka Hutchings' Native Rebel Recordings the plan was the same: the musicians gather at the RAK Studios for three days, without rehearsal and consider the rehearsals part of the recording, with Shabaka producing

The performers featured here are Jas Kayser who has performed with Alfa Mist, Nubya Garcia and Jorja Smith among others, Alexander Hawkins of the Convergence Quartet and Decoy, Daisy George, and Ross Harris of Speakers Corner Quartet.

The features on the album are incredible too, and highlight the eclectic nature of Native Rebel. We have billy Woods on album opener “Apothecary", TS Elliot prize winning poet Anthony Joseph on "By Now", Confucius MC of Speaker's Corner Quartet and Con & Kwake on "Flowers In The Dark", Elucid on "Show Me", ganavya on "Increase Awareness", and Siyabonga Mthembu of The Brother Moves On and Shabaka and The Ancestors on “Aim".

As always with Native Rebel releases, the physical product is on double heavyweight vinyl, in high quality sleeves with printed inner sleeves and with side D on this release featuring etched artwork.

Much has changed since Trio Grande"s first release in 2020, not least for the band itself: prodigious multi-instrumentalist Nate Wood now joins the indefatigably creative partnership forged in New York City by Gilad Hekselman and Will Vinson. The foundational triumvirate of drums, guitar and alto saxophone remains and even though each member is rated among the most individual and influential practitioners of their own instrument, the unmistakable enduring character of Trio Grande incorporates them all into its own unique identity, continuing to grow and develop at its own pace, to create new possibilities of form and texture, composition and improvisation.

Shams is an ode to a captivating region of the world that truly fascinates me: Bilad al Sham “Land of the sun”, or the Levant. Drawing inspiration from this culturally rich and vibrant area, I aimed to create music that radiates brightness and warmth, blending jazz, modes, and Arabic rhythms without constraints. Melody takes central place, flowing through irregular beats and finding freedom in the musicians' improvisations, with whom I immensely enjoy playing. Amin.
