Bethesda Game Studios and Laced Records have crewed up to bring the music of Starfield to deluxe vinyl.

As any player of a Bethesda Game Studios title knows, music shapes the story and is a constant companion on one’s adventure. Composer Inon Zur’s long-running collaboration with director Todd Howard and the studio began all the way back on 2008’s Fallout 3. With the Starfield score, they sought to evoke both the vastness of space and humanity’s curiosity-driven efforts to chart the unknown. This led to Zur weaving together traditional and non-traditional orchestral and electronic palettes into an aural tapestry of the organic and the synthetic.

During development, the team circulated an eclectic range of reference points: launching off with sci-fi staples John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith; passing through a classical nebula of Debussy, Ravel, and Prokofiev; flying by Vangelis’ towering synth work; and glancing the experimental work of Einstürzende Neubauten and John Cage.

Starfield’s orchestral cues — recorded by the Budapest Film Orchestra — often see different instrumental sections invoking imaginative aspects of space. Brisk, repeated sequences in the woodwinds represent particles. Strings playing undulating chords mimic long waves of interstellar energy. The brass section becomes a beacon of melody blasting out across the galaxy. Similarly, the more electronic-driven cues maintain a sense of grandeur through weighty synth pads that underpin cryptic repeated patterns and unusual percussive jabs.

This movie is full of amazing dialogue and also contains the greatest fist fight in the history of cinema. Like most of Carpenter's films, THEY LIVE has an urban-western feel to it, which is emphasized by the infectious score.

Celebrated designer and artist Alan Hynes has crafted a spectacular collectible package for the soundtrack befitting the film’s theme of subliminal communication, utilizing the iconic sunglasses to reveal hidden messages as you pull the disc sleeve from the slip case.

Carpenter and Howarth's main theme conjures up images of a lone cowboy entering town, with the main melody augmented with the sounds of harmonica and saxophone. There's a carefree attitude which reflects Rowdy Roddy Piper's character, but the score takes on a more sinister tone when he realizes he doesn't know anything about what's really going on. Carpenter's signature synth tones create an uncomfortable atmosphere, but the main bassline is always fighting against them, never giving up. Electric guitar is used fleetingly, but brilliantly, and the whole score embodies the kind of rebelling against authority Carpenter is famous for. Mouse on Mars unveil this archival film score for Werner Herzog’s fictional documentary Fata Morgana

Matthew Herbert continues his prolific run of soundtrack work with an original score for the acclaimed contemporary British horror film Starve Acre.

Starve Acre, directed by Daniel Kokotajlo and starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, tells the story of a couple confronting the loss of their child in a remote rural setting. Drawing heavily on folklore and mythology, its foreboding examination of grief, faith and the supernatural demanded a score folding pastoral themes and otherworldly textures into an oppressive yet delicate whole.

Starve Acre OST comes after a noted run of soundtracks by Herbert, which includes acclaimed independent films such as The Wonder, The Cave and the Oscar nominated A Fantastic Woman. It's a minimalist exercise in tension and fragility which matches patient threads of instrumentation with atmospheric sound design — romantic swells of orchestration pitted against looming low-end pressure and disembodied, unnatural voices helping render the malevolent forces implied throughout the film.

The soundtrack also features two versions of 'Let Me In' — one sung by Matt Smith, and the other performed by folk and electronics duo Crewdson & Cevanne (Hugh Jones and Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian). The song is an interpretation of 'It Hails, It Rains, It Snows, It Blows', an English folk song dated to the early 20th Century. From the pared-back acoustic lilt of Smith's version to the subtly building ornamentation of Crewdson & Cevanne's interpretation, it's a bewitching finale to the pervasive gloom of the wider score.

Quartet Records, in collaboration with GDM and Universal Music Publishing Italia, presents a 7-inch, 45 RPM, presents the premiere vinyl edition of the two key themes composed by Ennio Morricone for the grotesque comedy Crescete E Moltiplicatevi in 1973. The film was directed by Giulio Petroni in 1973 and starred Lionel Stander, Hugh Griffith and Rosalba Neri. Morricone’s unusual score, an explosive mixture of sacred and profane, is a guttural vocal work performed by I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni and Edda Dell’Orso, with the participation of Oscar Valdambrini’s wonderful flugelhorn. Mastered by Chris Malone, this 7-inch disc is pressed in elegant white, audiophile vinyl.

Brown working full time on the brilliant music for their modern RPG opus Sea of Stars, they enrolled Yasunori Mitsuda as a guest composer. Anything less than a legendary score simply wouldn’t do.

We at iam8bit are humbled to play a part in bringing that score to life, here for you. This is the Sea of Stars 2xLP, a veritable epic on Solar Orange and Lunar Blue wax. It’s the score to Sea of Stars, with all the swelling highs, whimsical diversions, and touching twists present in the game, forever enshrined on vinyl for your home listening pleasure. Without Umiliani’s contribution, Italian jazz, film music and library music would lack some of the key identifying features we associate them with today, thanks to his ability to carve out a distinctive sound identity from his personal craft, the studio he built and the trust he gained from his collaborators. This identity for many simply encapsulates the cipher of an unrepeated age of Italian popular music.
At the Sound Work Shop studio (opened in 1968) Umiliani conceived the majority of his projects and hosted the recording sessions for numerous movie soundtracks, pop hits and library music albums by the most remarkable musicians in Rome — including himself. In this exciting environment, he had the opportunity to experiment with many different styles, from funk to psychedelic rock, from disco to avant-garde, from easy-listening to electronic music, following the ever-changing needs of the soundtrack and library music industries. He therefore mastered an extreme variety of genres, moods and atmospheres, often mixing up their peculiar features to achieve unusual combinations in albums conceived both for production purposes and for home listening.
Umiliani’s ability to reinvent the concept of musicianship in the fast-moving society of his time made him a modern musician in the most complete sense of the term, by putting himself in charge of every facet of his work, from the conception to the production, the recording, the publishing and even the packaging of his own music.
In less than two decades, Umiliani released almost 80 records on the three labels he established between the mid-1960s and the early 1970s: Omicron, Liuto, and Sound Work Shop, besides all the music he was simultaneously composing for movie productions, licensed and published by Italian major companies.
This box set allows us to fully appreciate this little-known side of Piero Umiliani in an unprecedented way: his ability to seamlessly intertwine his musical creativity with his vision as a producer and publisher emerges clearly from this series as a unique feature of this composer. However, her symptoms and slow loss of reality render Beth unable to realize that something has moved in with her, observing her every move, and preparing in the darkness of Wyvern Hill. Wyvern Hill was released in the United States under the name "Hollow." Shot between two lockdowns during the pandemic for 25 consecutive days and made for less than $6,500, the film went one to win and be nominated for numerous awards at film festivals across the UK. Michael Sanchez started scoring short films for Director Jonathan Zaurin and made his feature length debut with the impressive Wyvern Hill. He is again working with Jonathan Zaurin on Derelict and has two other films coming out in 2023. His score for Wyvern Hill was one of the most talked about parts of the film and was nominated at film festivals around the world. He is influenced by Akira Yamaoka (of the Silent Hill video game series), Daniel Licht, Charlie Clouser, Christopher Young, Amon Tobin, Joseph Bishara, Clint Mansell, and Danny Elfman. For Wyvern Hill, Sanchez literally combines all of those artists, while adding in some heavy horror elements and industrial flavors of his own to this jaw dropping score.
