Some new little time machines, bespoke engines and introverted cata-claustrophobia, with the occasional breath taking moment and resonance, made with nonchalance, reluctance, enthusiasm and great care. Constructed in a little pocket of anxiety, banging to the beats of an obsolete hubris, with a contempt for nostalgia and yet while trying not to repeat ourselves, to repeat ourselves. They say in repetition there is change and progression. It never adds up, always more than the sum of the parts and off trend with the rest of the prattle and noisemakers.

Sarabeth Tucek emerges from a decade-long hibernation with a new double-album Joan of All under the new moniker SBT – a longtime nickname given to her by the many musicians she has worked with throughout her career. After retreating from the fevered pace of the record business to concentrate on other creative endeavors, Sarabeth began to piece together the music that would eventually become her most ambitious, personal project yet – the sprawling double-album Joan Of All, which will be released world-wide on 19th May 2023 via her own freshly-minted imprint Ocean Omen. Sarabeth Tucek officially broke onto the music scene 2003 performing a series of spellbinding duets with Bill Callahan on the acclaimed Smog album Supper. This was swiftly followed by a memorable appearance in the prize-winning Brian Jonestown Massacre documentary DiG! Sarabeth also contributed material to their 2005 EP release, We Are the Radio. One of Sarabeth's compositions covered by the band on that EP, "Seer," would later be retitled and released in 2006 as Tucek's debut single, "Something for You”, which became Steve Lamacq’s Single Of The Week on BBC Radio 6 Music. Her self-titled debut album produced by Luther Russell and Ethan Johns hit stores the following year and garnered rave reviews in the press, leading her to supporting Bob Dylan and unfaltering support at the BBC. In 2011, Sarabeth followed up her extraordinary debut with a raw, uncompromising album entitled Get Well Soon, praised as an unflinching meditation on the subject of grief. This release made many year-end lists and the title track was featured on the first season of HBO’s Girls.

instrumentalist and producer. Her sound is a unique blend of psych-soul, folktronica and experimental synth-pop.

Sarah released her acclaimed debut album 'Of The New World' on First Word in 2015, which was written, produced and performed by Sarah from her home studio, with the assistance of drummer, engineer & husband, Timmy Rickard. Her projects have seen support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Nemone & Chris Hawkins (bbc 6 Music), Jamie Cullum (bbc Radio 2), FIP Radio, Clash & The Guardian, to name a few, and she's toured the UK with Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Golden Rules (Lex). There have been additional collaborations with label-mate Quiet Dawn (on the 2021 compilation / EP 'A Family Affair') and with her brother, Paul White - a revered producer in his own right, with credits including Danny Brown and Sudan Archives.

Following a hiatus, Sarah now brings us her sophomore album, 'Unfathomable'. A project that offers up escapism from the mundane, enticing us to connect with our natural planet in this prevalent time, via the eyes of a new mother.

In her words, Sarah states that the album is "about escape. It's about deflating the ego by looking up to the endlessness of outer space, connecting with the greatness of mother nature, and loving how unfathomable the universe and life itself is".

So if Sandrider marks a shift for Weisnewski and Damm, it's more in the inclusion of Roberts and the overall presentation of their sound than in the style of their play. That said, Sandrider does have a more grounded feel to its material than did Akimbo; a maturation and natural next step from what they last presented. Songs vary in memorability, but each proves worthy in one way or another, and for the flow Sandrider establish across the album as a whole, nothing is out of place or unjustifiable. Roberts is an excellent complement for Weisnewski vocally, the two blending so well together that it's hard to tell where tradeoffs are (other than backing spots), and Damm's percussion adds a punk-ish sense of danger to the whole affair, whether it's the rhythmic shifts of 'Crysknife' or the driving finale of closer 'Scatter.' Sandrider, because they're not really a new band, don't fall prey to what a lot of others might on their first record in terms of not fully realizing the vision of what they're trying to accomplish, but at the same time, there's a sense of potential in opener 'Children' that speaks to the development of Sandrider as its own band and a hopefully ongoing project. The song has some surfy swagger and sway, and Weisnewski's scream tops the cleaner singing excellently. His guitar is at the fore, but the balance of the mix is excellent, and Sandrider can strike into either accessibility or riffy abandon depending on the band's whim.

Haunted Painting is the return to Sadie Dupuis' pop-oriented solo project Sad13. Previous releases include 2016's Slugger and a handful of tracks across compilations such as Adult Swim's Singles series. Since Slugger, Dupuis' other project Speedy Ortiz has released a new record and toured heavily and Dupuis has also published a poetry manuscript titled Mouthguard. It all finds Dupuis, already one of the sharpest lyricists of her generation, leveling up as an arranger and producer. Drawing inspiration from 1980s British pop-rock à la Tracy Ullman and Joan Armatrading, as well as the contemporary digital gloss of post-PC Music electronica, she calls Haunted Painting 'decidedly non-minimal,' mixing technicolor synth-pop and math-rock dynamism. The first track from Haunted Painting, 'WTD?', was also featured as part of the Adult Swim Singles series.

“Manmade” is the sixth and last album from the legendary Norwegian prog/jazz rock band Ruphus, originally released in 1979. A worthy end to a career of a band who made an everlasting catalogue of exciting music. After the previous album (“Flying Colours” in 1978), Ruphus lost three of the five band members. One of them was Thor Bendiksen (drums), who had been in the band from the start. It seemed impossible to replace one of the founding members, but Bjørn Jenssen filled the vacant drum stool like a charm. On keyboards, Kjell Rønningen replaced Jan Simonsen, and on vocals Gudny Aspaas returned for a third period in the band. With Gudny back in the band and new forces on keys and drums, they ventured to England to record a new album with Steven O’Donnell and Colin H. Jennings as producers. The result was a bona fide classic, and this new version of Ruphus did an extensive tour of Europe in support of it. “Manmade” is the sixth and last album in a series of Ruphus re-issues from Karisma Records, remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc).

Island Of Lost Souls follows his acclaimed 2018 LP Suffuse—a novel departure in which he consigned all vocal duties to ambient / experimental peers Liz Harris (of Grouper), Julianna Barwick, Purple Pilgrims, Haley Fohr (of Circuit des Yeux), Katie von Schleicher, and She Keeps Bees. Led by teen guitar wizard Ramon “rj” Jacinto, RJ & THE Riots was one of the first rock&roll /beat bands from the Philippines and certainly the first to release original rock n’ roll songs with lyrics in their own country. This is the first ever reissue of their second album, originally released in 1964 and now impossible to find (four stars rating in Hans Pokora’s 1001 Record Collector Dreams book). Including original songs like the monster instrumental “Fuzzed”, the garage sounding “Advertising Man”, “Girl Nice”, the surf rock of “Trip To Manila” and more plus a few rad covers (Beach Boys, Buddy Holly…). The album was recorded at the home studio built by whizz kid Ramón Jacinto, who also operated his own record label (RJ Productions), magazine (Teenstone) and radio station (from his parent’s backyard!) RJ and the Riots started as a high school band of classmates composed of Ramon “rj” Jacinto (lead guitar), Alan Austria (bass guitar), Jimmy Colayco (rhythm guitar) and Bernie Evangelista (drums) with ages ranging from 15-17 years old. They were one of the first bands with electric instruments in the Philippines and this album marked the transition from instrumental rock to vocals. Recorded in 2012, finally this banger gets the proper vinyl release it deserves! In the early 2010’s Ripper ruled the Portland punk, metal, hardcore scene releasing one epic LP followed by an equally destructive 7-inch. This record finds the band in the height of their prime before they spontaneously combusted. The rock n’ roll riffage, double bass drum, driving bass guitar holding it down, the Lemmy-esque/INEPSY-esque vocals, and of course the well executed guitar solos are all played like their lives depend on it. Like an out of control train about to go off the rails, this record is full of hair-raising tempos demanding a head bang whether you want to or not. Obviously for fans of Motörhead, but unlike many bands of this style there is no hint of being contrived or cheesy. Rock n’ roll poured through these three maniacs' blood (and it still does with the many projects they all went onto in the 10 years since). While it’s sad that this may be the last thing we ever hear from Ripper, this is one hell of a swan song and well worth the 10 year wait.

Reverse Death was birthed in Seattle, WA by the songwriters of Swamp Meat, Baywitch, & Killer Ghost. Utilizing cello tonics, gentle feedback, crawling piano ascents, and orbiting melodies, this amalgam of earthy ingredients plucked for the infinite night.

Stretching to Infinity’s dulcet palette was developed during a tour in Guadalajara while discovering new improvisational techniques and diving deep into the music of Tengger, Jessica Pratt, Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou and John Fahey. Channeling the afterglow of these explorations, the album was recorded after sundown, with closed eyes, and aims set on stretching the body and mind through all the spiritual hangups of life. Days were spent pouring over the collection of raw recordings during an extended stay in the Snoqualmie woods. A field tested cycle of songs was selected and sequenced for the album. With the help of mix master Dylan White, and mastering wizard Mikey Young, the music was fully actualized into its widest and most shimmering potential self.

Belgian punk innovators Raxola formed in 1977, the name denoting Revolution Axis Opens Lights Ahead, one of only three Belgian punk acts to record an album in the early days. Ratboys have been recording and releasing music for over a decade, but their newest album, The Window, marks the first time they’d ever traveled outside their home base of Chicago to make a record, journeying to the Hall of Justice Recording Studio in Seattle to work with producer Chris Walla. The sessions with Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Foxing) struck the perfect balance between preparation and experimentation, injecting new life into the band’s style of soft-hearted Midwestern indie rock with an ever so subtle Americana twist. The solidified Ratboys lineup stretched and expanded their vision in the studio, adding unexpected elements and instruments like rototoms, talkboxes, and fiddles. Babydoll is the fifth Rat Columns album and, following 2021’s Pacific Kiss, the second to be released on Tough Love. The recordings took place in Perth, Western Australia, partially by engineer Jason Hayles in a 1960's office building that formerly housed the secretarial pool of a successful mattress company, and partially by DW in an industrial unit, and feature the ensemble cast of Taylah McLean, Chris Grunwaldt, Scott Payne, Richard Ingham, Cohen Bourgault and, of course, DW himself. It was then mixed and mastered in Melbourne by Mikey Young and Joseph Carra, respectively. Babydoll seems to mark a return to a murkier, dirgier Rat Columns format. Distortion is fetishized again and many small amplifiers were tortured in the album's production. Tempos have drifted down and the lyrical concerns move ever inward, in an inverse bloom. The mood is dour, introspective, circular, the songs long, and short attention spans are neglected. 'Cerulean Blue' churns through a crystalline memoryscape, homaging low-brow grunge auto-fiction and a partial history of mid-period rave. 'Life In The Jungle' is a fever dream of imperialist wartime fantasy projection. 'Heavenly Assault' attempts a crushing density amid visions of transcendent devotion. 'Virtual Sweden' takes us ever northwards into the frosted tip of Scandinavian détente. 'Babydoll', like 'Cerulean Blue', homages a primarily imagined low-cosmopolitan world of alt-lit digi-poets, bedroom fantasists, underwater prisons for gorgeous, gorgeous girls. 'Bees Make Honey' lets more sophisticated music machines into the conversation and marks the first use of vocal tuning software on a Rat Columns album, albeit in an avant-amateurist fashion. 'Jane, I Live For You' enters the space-ballad race, dreaming of synthetic folk-rockers, leaning on sampler keybeds in the half-light. 'December' is yet another tribute to fallen Stars, mansions on the hill, winter skin in cashmere sweaters, truth in education, love, faith, (im)purity. In all these respects, it is a classic Rat Columns record. Because all Rat Columns records are classic records.
