Warren Zevon had toured for quite some time as a songwriter in the rock scene, released a few singles and landed a flop with his debut LP in 1969 before the tide finally turned. Roughly ten years later, his live album – put together from a five-day residency at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood – entered the annals of vinyl history as one of the best live albums of all time and was awarded four stars by the magazine Rolling Stone. Ambiguously entitled by the comprehensively educated Zevon, who had been confronted with the tough side of show business, "Stand In The Fire" delivers genial simple pure and straightforward rock right from the start, which hit the public with a vengeance. Full of vim and elation, the band pours out the significant, biting verses with fire ("Jeannie Needs A Shooter") and fuels the emotional inferno with high-speed bursts of rock ("Excitable Boy"). Zevon proves his skills as a singer and songwriter in the ballad-like yet powerful "Mohammed’s Radio". In a direct comparison to this number we have the forthright, no-nonsense hit "Werewolves Of London" with its close harmonies. Just how Zevon manages to succeed in getting his delicate voice and lyrics over to the public is shown in the powerful mix of heavy and honky-tonk ("I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead") and finally in the thunderous final number – "Bo Didley’s A Gunslinger" – with its percussive and metrically complicated antiphony.

Among the impressive discography by Portland, OR Hardcore Punk forerunners Poison Idea, their 1986 debut LP Kings Of Punk is considered one of the most important entries. Originally released on the Pusmort label owned and operated by legendary visual artist Brian “Pushead” Schroeder (Misfits, Metallica), Kings Of Punk introduced Poison Idea to a wide audience than their previously the self-released and distributed releases on Fatal Erection, the record label co-run by their guitarist Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts. Taking full advantage of the situation, Poison Idea made sure their first full-length release would make an impact on the American Hardcore Punk scene. From the grisly, full-color cover image of the band’s name carved into the chest of vocalist Jerry A. Lang to the blistering music contained within, Kings Of Punk was convincing enough to earn Poison Idea the attention that helped spread their legend and kicked off the band's most prolific period: the late 80s - early 90s. Out-of-print since TKO’s ephemera-packed “Portland Edition” version from the summer of 2022, Kings Of Punk now returns as the third installment in TKO’s Poison Idea Remasters series. This new edition finds all eleven tracks shined up while still retaining the feral bite of the original, proving almost forty years since its release, Kings Of Punk will forever be evidence enough for Poison Idea to claim their self-appointed throne.

Black Grape could only have been made in Manchester. The swagger, fun and cryptic humour seem hewn from a city historian AJP Taylor once described as offering an archetypally different way of English urban life to London. Both Shaun Ryder and Paul Leveridge, known as Kermit, came from edgy-but-cool parts of the city. In Shaun’s case Salford, with Kermit originating from Moss Side. For those unfamiliar, ‘the Moss’ lay in the shadow of Manchester City’s old stadium at Maine Road and was one of the first multi-ethnic areas in Manchester.

Black Grape are widely regarded as one of the most innovative and iconic bands of the last twenty-five years. Black Grape have had 4 Top 10 singles and their debut album It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah shot straight to No.1 in the UK charts upon its release in 1995 and went Platinum. Follow up album Stupid Stupid Stupid went Gold in 1997.

Ryder has grown from a wild young tearaway into a British National Treasure. Black Grape always were a grimily cosmic musical jigsaw, melding rock, hip-hop, acid house, psychedelic pop and reggae with Ryder’s gutter poetry, delivered in his inimitable shyster’s bark.

Referencing bands like Dead Can Dance, Swans and Om, Messa have created an album where song, experience and atmosphere are focused into a crystalline modus where high art flawlessly embraces good old fashioned riff-worship. Transcending the occult and noir-tinted atmospheres of their past works, “Close” confidently weaves Messa’s multifarious influences into a singular breath-taking sound that leaves the listener enthralled. Dystopia reigns in the game and in our own world; the music capturing the surreality of survival in the past few years. The band says:

”This material was inspired by the dystopian climate of the pandemic, confinement, many losses and a government crisis. Finally available on vinyl, this underground masterwork of analog electronic music pushed the envelope of melodic synth freakouts to unimaginable edges and undreamt of realms of space. Recorded live on the spot without overdubs, Jeff Carney’s 'Imperfect Space Journeys” (ISJ) has become a highly prized collectible amongst “Berlin School” fanatics still soaking in the '70s sounds of Klaus Schulze, Ashra and Tangerine Dream, as well as fans of Terry Riley's organ works (Riley is Carney's cousin), and Heldon heads. Originally a cassette-only release, the rare copy appearing on the collector market can exchange hands at three-figure sums even on cassette, making it one of the most sought after treasures of the electronic underground.

With a keyboard arsenal more likely to have been assembled in the late seventies, West Coast space music architect Jeff Carney rebelled against prevailing digital trends with analog electronic wizardry, unleashing this statement of purpose on the New York “Audiofile” label in 1988. Designed around the possibilities of live performance, Carney used simple, captivating hooks with which to weave tapestries of electronic texture. His influences on this debut are apparent, but his sounds absolutely unique. Every lead seems to have a tone outside the sounds already explored in the genre. Sound effects give a sense of deep space: perhaps owing their galactic awareness to Gong and Hawkwind, but pushing like a volcano into other realms. 'Imperfect Space Journeys' is a study in minimalist rhythmic structures that enable Carney to decorate with cosmic colors and wild effects collages, while also tending to be highly melodic. 'Noise' is used as a means to create images of spaceships passing in the deepest of space skies. Tension and release are used for maximum impact. But there is also plenty of sonic ear candy. Melodic lines that you'll find yourself wanting to revisit again and again!

Source for this reissue: 24bit/96kHz transfers taken from the original analog tapes. This deluxe reissue of ISJ includes three bonus tracks not included on the original cassette release. Comes with an eight-page color LP-sized insert booklet. Limited to 500x copies worldwide.

Carney recorded 'Imperfect Space Journeys' at 20 years old. He would soon produce works in which his skills were further honed and his unique sonic paintings took an even more exploratory shape, but ISJ is the beginning of the story. It is where the “journey” begins.

"When I came across the idea of psychodrama therapy, I started to think about how we have so many joint experiences as a society that currently happen or have happened, and how they shape both our singular and collective consciousness. Music has always been a form of therapy for not just me, but a massive amount of the people in the world. I started to conceptualize this as an idea for the album, thinking that we all have so many connections to major/micro events in time, and generally similar interpretations of them. Like the idea of a psychodrama therapy session, I started to envision how the songs could play out about these different moments... Fronted by Linda Hoyle, a powerful vocalist who sounds like a cross between Carol King and Julie Driscoll, the line up was completed by Mo Foster (bass), Mike Jupp (electric and 12-string guitars), Lynton Naiff (keyboards) and Grant Serpell (drums and percussion). Their eclectic mixture was truly compelling moving over a certain psychedelic feel, thanks also to the ubiquitous Hammond organ. A singular effort that made definitely history.

Rainbow Generator are Australia’s first true experimental electronic music group. Consisting of David Labuschagne AKA Mojo, and Rob Greaves AKA Ras. Starting in the mid-70’s, the pair took it upon themselves to begin exploring the possibilities of the sonic dimension and with an ‘open mind’ began investigating the interface between psyche and sound.

In 1976 David established the ‘Lectric Loo’ studio in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. Known to the ‘heads’ as simply the “Loo”, the 3-story building was owned by the Department of Main Roads, and slated for demolition. So, it was that the entire block became a haven for squatters, and while Mojo had the main 3-story building to himself, the rest of the buildings were taken by a hotch-potch of people that included Anarchists, a Clown School and a collection of other random squatters. Recording in the ‘Lectric Loo’ provided them the ability to record freely. In 1975 they began to experiment, putting Mojo’s Fender Strat through effects pedals, playing with sounds while manipulating shortwave radio stations and also challenging convention by playing the insides of instruments. By 1976 they had built a kit synthesizer and shortly after purchased a full Roland 100 Synthesiser set-up and were on their way.

In 1978, with little resources, or any form of distribution they released their sole LP ‘Dance of the Spheres’. As Mojo puts it, “we were intent on making music with whatever we could beg, borrow, buy, and liberate. Albeit with scant regard for the rules or conventions or niceties of the game. Ultimately, it was all an act of love, of joy. Not just an adventure; it was a musical odyssey”.

This odyssey continued their exploration of the interface between psyche and sound. Fusing genres and boundaries, Dance of the Spheres incorporates elements of 70’s psych and folk with spoken-word and of course the emerging sounds of the synthesizer and drum machines. Furthermore, the addition of traditional instruments such as the didgeridoo and the classical Indian instrumentation technique of a Raga add a timeless layer, all seamlessly complementing the other elements and launching the album to another dimension.

Isolated in the middle of nowhere, Gloson recorded this album right before the Covid-19 hell broke loose and for the first time, allowed someone else to be in charge of the recording process, to put all their energy on being purely creative and productive whilst in the studio. “It was a very liberating feeling”, Gloson comments, who previously carried out almost everything related to production themselves.

During 1978 to 1980, Fashion released one album and a handful of indie club hit singles mixing Punk & Reggae vibes. They toured the US extensively supporting The Police in 1979. Limited Edition of 800 copies 2LP set with printed inner bags. All tracks completely remastered. Contains every studio recording of the first lineup of Fashion including US singles. Includes unreleased tracks. Liner notes from lead singer & Guitarist Luke Sky. Fashion went through several line-up overhauls during its initial existence between 1978 and 1984. John Mulligan (synthesiser, bass) and Dik Davis' (drums) were constants, but the band's frontman changed with each of the band's three albums. Post-punk years: Fàshiön Music Fashion was formed originally as Fàshiön Music, in Birmingham, England, in 1978, and consisted of John Mulligan (bass, synthesizer), Dik Davis (drums), and Al James (vocals, guitar). James became known as Luke Sky, or simply Luke or Lûke (short for "Luke Skyscraper" - a reference to the Star Wars character Luke Skywalker and the fact that James was tall and thin), while John Mulligan was known simply as Mulligan and Dik Davis simply as Dïk (or "Dik Mamba" on their debut single). In 1978, they also founded their own Fàshiön Music label; from this point forward, the band was generally (though not completely consistently) identified as Fashion, as distinct from the name of their self-owned label. Fashion released their first two singles ("Steady Eddie Steady" and "Citinite") as independent issues on the UK in November 1978 and June 1979 respectively. The group was quickly picked up by I.R.S., who put out a third single in the US in September 1979, "The Innocent". Their sound was varied, playing punk, post-punk and indie repertoire, although Mulligan at that time also had a synthesizer which later characterized the future synthpop years of the band.
