Although many metalheads probably assume that Swedish guitar shredder Yngwie J. Malmsteen's first U.S.-based band was Alcatrazz, he was a brief member of another obscure Los Angeles-based metal band called Steeler. The group also featured future Keel frontman Ron Keel (bassist Rik Fox and drummer Mark Edwards also rounded out the band), and the quartet's music was similar to the pop/party metal that was ruling the Sunset Strip at the time. The band was one of the first to be signed to Mike Varney's Shrapnel label (one that has since become synonymous with highly technical guitar shredders), resulting in a lone self-titled release from 1983 before their breakup shortly thereafter. Although the album failed to make much noise upon release, it became a cult classic for fans after Malmsteen and Keel.

Known to many for their uplifting hit song “O-o-h Child,” Stairsteps (formerly The Five Stairsteps) were The First Family of Soul, providing the template for family bands like The Jackson 5. Originally discovered by Curtis Mayfield, they were introduced to The Beatles by Billy Preston. George Harrison signed the band to Dark Horse Records in 1975 and put out the band’s final album, 2nd Resurrection, which featured one of their biggest hits, “From Us To You.” Billy Preston played synthesizer and served as co-producer alongside Robert Margouleff.

Remastered and pressed on transparent clear vinyl with reproduced gatefold artwork and an OBI strip. Comprised of duo Bill Elliot and Bobby Purvis, SPLINTER’s blend of folk, pop, and rock were introduced to Dark Horse Records founder George Harrison in 1973. Harrison was quick to spot their potential and made them one of the first signings to his new label. The band’s debut album The Place I Love was produced by Harrison and features extensive guitar work by the legendary musician, as well as contributions from Billy Preston, Jim Keltner, and Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) and Gary Wright (Spooky Tooth and “Dream Weaver.”). One of the earliest recordings to be made at Harrison’s. Fpshot studio in his Friar Park home, this critically acclaimed album was the first to be released on Dark Horse Records and charted on the Billboard 100. Billboard highlighted the band’s “strong harmony vocals,” whilst Melody Maker called the album an “outstanding debut.” Includes the hit single “Costafine Town,” along with the singles “Drink All Day (Got to Find Your Own Way Home)” and “China Light.” This remastered classic is now available on vinyl for the first time since its 1974 release.

Soul Jazz Records’ new Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul: Gospel, Funk and Soul at the Crossroads 1971-83 is a one-off limited-edition heavyweight red vinyl pressing + download code exclusively for Record Store Day 2023.

The album draws upon the extensive links between Black American Gospel music and Soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, Andraé Crouch and others crossed over into secular soul music during this period.
Many of the most successful soul artists – from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, The Staples Singers to Sam Cooke – all drew upon their upbringing in the church for their musical inspiration. This album discusses how important the links between the Black church and Soul music were in creating Soul, and spotlights some of the many important (and also little-known) Gospel artists who walked this line between sacred music and soul, funk and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul shows how sacred Gospel music was at home with Stevie Wonder and Blaxploitation-style funk and produced music celebrated both in New York’s underground discos (The Paradise Garage, Studio 54, etc) and later sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige.

14 million streams ago...God, where to start? We formed in the late-70s to play a special Mass for the Bishop at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brooklyn. Most of us met for the first time while rehearsing for that Mass and decided to keep in touch. We realized that Catholics (we were all Roman Catholics at the time) had nowhere to go to hear fun, inspirational music, so we began playing church halls and schools doing "rocked-up" versions of songs we pulled out of hymnals. Eventually some of us wrote our own stuff. We played hundreds of shows over the next 4 years, passing the hat for donations to pay for necessities that we needed to keep the group going (microphones, wires, gas for the van, and eventually, the "First Fruit" album, which we sold at concerts for just about cost). It was never about the money; it was all about spreading the Good News and having fun doing it. We consistently lost members through the years and gave our last concert in December 1983. Doug Prinzivalli, who owned a video copy of our appearance on a local TV show sometime in 1982, had been running "where are they now" (or more specifically, "who are they") contests on his California blog for years. It wasn't until he got his hands on a copy of the album (which is amazing considering we only printed 1,000 or so) that he found my name and tracked me down. Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply was released in America and Canada in April 1984. It is a repackaged version of The Amazing Kamikaze Syndrome which was released in the UK, Europe and across the rest of the world in December 1983. Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply reached No. 33 in the US and No. 26 in Canada, giving the band their long-awaited breakthrough in the US. The album proved to be the most successful North American release of Slade's career. Both "Run Runaway" and "My Oh My" enjoyed Top 40 success as singles there.

Queen Talk: Live at the Left Bank is an official, never-before-released concert recording from one of the greatest female jazz organists of all-time, Shirley Scott, featuring a powerhouse trio with George Coleman on tenor saxophone and Bobby Durham on drums, plus special guest vocalist Ernie Andrews on three tracks. This hand-numbered, limited edition (3000 worldwide), double LP set was transferred from the original tape reels and is pressed on 180g vinyl. It features 100 minutes of music and is packaged in a gatefold sleeve with an extensive booklet with liner notes by acclaimed music writer A. Scott Galloway, rare photos by Don Schlitten and Raymond Ross, and memorabilia from the Left Bank archives plus interviews with jazz organ icon Joey DeFrancesco, former Shirley Scott bandmate, saxophonist Tim Warfield, and pianist Monty reminiscing about drummer Bobby Durham. The set is co-produced by label owner/musician Cory Weeds and renowned archival recording producer Zev Feldman.

The show was recorded at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore Maryland on August 20, 1972 and hasn't ever been previously available. Philadelphia-born Scott rose to fame in the late 1950s playing the Hammond B-3 organ influenced by blues and gospel evolving into '60s soul jazz. She recorded numerous albums for Prestige, Impulse!, Atlantic, Cadet and Candid performing with countless jazz legends including Stanley Turrentine, Oliver Nelson, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Clark Terry and Kenny Burrell.

The 10-track set cooks on songs of the day like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," and "Never Can Say Goodbye," along with standards such as "Smile," "Witchcraft" and John Coltrane's "Impressions."

Formed in the northern English market town of Stoke on Trent in 1981, likeable street punk/Oi! trio Section 5 built a reputation through their solid live gigs, bagging a contract with Roddy Moreno’s Oi! Records for debut album We Won’t Change in 1985. This expanded edition of that top-notch LP includes five bonus demos recorded when the group was a four-piece, with Dave ‘Mask’ Maskery on lead vocals, before his departure led founding member/guitarist Tosh to tackle the front-man duties. Reissue of the 1981 debut LP by darkwave electrronic pioneers, Schleimer K', based around the duo of Englishman Michael Wolfen and Frenchman Dominique Brethes and its music has two naturally interlaced aspects. On the one hand, there's the eccentric dandyism of British "punk gothique" (if we take Bauhaus as its strongest representative) and the musical intransigence of early industrial bands (like Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire). On the other hand, we have the very obvious French touch of "coldwave", varying from cold synth sounds to intense experiments. New artwork, yellow vinyl!
