Battery was a staple of the Washington, D.C., hardcore scene during the ’90s, formed by a who’s-who of that scene, including members of Damnation A.D., Better Than A Thousand, Shelter, Ashes, and Worlds Collide. From 1991-1998, the band released numerous EPs and LPs that have mostly been in high demand for reissues leading up to Revelation Records reissuing Whatever It Takes… in 2014. To coincide with the band’s appearances at Damaged City Fest in D.C. and Rev Fest in California in 2017, Battery hand-selected their favorite tracks from throughout their career for this release, presenting only the most powerful of their output.

By the time the Hyenas went back into the studio, Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball had left to form Mule and had left John and Larissa without a rhythm section. Many people thought this marked the end of the band. Not the case. Todd Swalla (founding member of Necros) stepped in on drums and Kevin Ries on bass. Todd is a much more subtle timekeeper than Jim and Ries had no problem locking in with him, but stayed in the background a little more than Strickland leaving Larissa to take up a little more of the slack. She rises to the occasion, her leads a bit more melodic than before, although still blanketed in a sheet of noise. Brannon's anguished vocals will still peel the paint of the walls and over the new slightly toned down direction, somehow seem even more extreme.

Crawl is notably the only of the Hyenas records recorded in Detroit at White Room Studios.

This album saw one more line up change: Kevin Ries left and one time Necros Ron Sakowski stepped in, the Hyenas went down to Memphis to the legendary Easley Studios to record their final LP with the one and only Doug Easley. On Hard Times, we see the Hyenas influences are more Howlin' Wolf/Muddy Waters than they are Nick Cave/Iggy Pop. The full-on sonic assault of the first three records has given way to a hard hitting groove that has a graceful Exile-era Stones vibe. Larissa's simple and one-of-a-kind guitar playing has never been better. Brannon does more crooning than screaming on this one, giving us their most ''musical'' offering yet. Every bit as emotionally ruthless as their previous releases, the Laughing Hyenas went out on a high note with Hard Times.

Incredible but true, your fave label discovered an entire unreleased punk rock album from the land of spaghetti and mandolino! Uniplux were one of the few bands of 1977 Roman punk scene that included bands such as Trancefusion, Elektroshock, Luxfero, Ulster Punk Group, Apologia Di Reato, Bads, Stigma, Ddt. This band released two singles, the first, released for a major label RCA and entitled ‘Chi siamo noi?’ came out in 1982. The second one, ‘Maledetto rock’, (Pogo records), came out two years later in 1984. Both records are very hard to find and sought after, mainly because Uniplux offered a unique vision of melodic punk rock. in 1997, a bunch of European punk collectors compiled ‘killed by death 201’, dedicated to Italian 1977/82 punk rock scene, selecting the track “U.X.” to represent this band. After over 36 years, Rave Up Records unearthed from the tomb 11 killer tracks!!!! Amazing Italian punk with female vocals. For fans of Generation X, Buzzcocks, Penetration and all the early UK punk rock.

If you don’t know Sick Thoughts, you don’t know punk. The band is the mighty Drew Owen. Baltimore born and bred, he then up and moved to the swamps of New Orleans while still a teenager. The general consensus was he’d be another casualty of The Big Easy decadence, and would soon be seen hitting up tourists for money on Bourbon Street with a dog on a rope. But somehow he got hooked up with the best (worst?) folks in the city and kept making great music. That, and the fact that forty-ounce bottles just bounce off his head, have kept him alive. Rock and roll romance and the promise of socialized health care sent him to the (imaginary?) home of Killed By Death punk, Helsinki, Finland. Which makes perfect sense—this album is like the perfect KBD record, full of buzzsaw guitars, machine gun drums and hooks that hit like a tire iron. Owen’s brand of aural early-20s angst, with doses of Zero Boys, Reatards, and early Crüe, mixed with the stench of the streets, has never sounded better. NEW Re-issue OF THE SKA Meets Pop-punk Classic That Kicked OFF THE Modern SKA Resurgence ON Retail Exclusive Blue Vinyl W/ Marketing Sticker Whatever arguable resurgence that ska punk seems to be having, you can’t attempt to explain it or pinpoint it without referencing We Are The Union or their 2018 masterpiece “Self Care”. Initially a crowd-funded venture that raised over $60,000 worth of support, the record’s release was met with critical success and an instantly sold out modest initial pressing of 600 units. Now for the first time since it’s release the record is available again from the ska-punk focused Bad Time Records (who released the band’s 2021 album “Ordinary Life”), ready to meet the since dramatically expanded ska fan base. The record focuses on mental health in a way that hadn’t been addressed especially by a ska band. Singer Reade Wolcott addressed it in an article for Spin: “At that point, my focus was very pro-normalizing talking about mental health,” Wolcott says of 2018’s Self Care, the band’s first post-hiatus record. Wolcott wanted to push the conversation around mental health and open the possibility of taking complex emotions and putting them at the center of a ska song. “People related to it in a way that I hadn’t seen in the past,” she says of the album’s themes of depression, anxiety and existential crises. - Niko Stratis, Spin With radio-worthy singles like “A Better Home” and “What’s Wrong With Me”, the record is not only important in the annals of ska history but a critical success in the world of independent music, period, and a must have for collectors and fans alike.
