Messthetics moderne / doomtown goes downtown. "If you can opine on the relative merits of Slates versus Hex Enduction Hour (I definitely can), CDG makes music for you. Not that CDG sounds exactly like the Fall (but sometimes they sound a lot like the Fall). For one, CDG often uses funky grooves (like the Zamrock-ish “Degraded Dialect”), something the Fall didn’t tend to do, but that was a big part of that UK DIY / post-punk / messthetic (although CDG resides in Portland, this is very Anglophonic). If you have any fucking clue about what I’m going on about right now, you need this. It’s exactly how on the nose you want it to be, right down to the distinctive sleeve design and the sneaky pop hit that closes the record. Originally known as the singer, songwriter, and founder of both Lagwagon and BAD Astronaut, Joey Cape has established himself as a recognized solo artist over the past 15 years. His solo ventures have allowed him to stretch the bounds of his musical stylings, highlighting more diverse instrumentation, subdued pace, and experimental elements. The one constant, of course, is his unique ability to craft unforgettable songs. As with pretty much everyone on the planet, 2020 was a challenging year for Joey. At the onset he was going through difficult transitions on multiple fronts. Then the pandemic hits, and Joey finds himself dealing with things he had never experienced before all at once. The result is A Good Year to Forget, a record that encapsulates all the trials and tribulations of the 12 months that inspired it. Written entirely in isolation in a makeshift home recording studio at his mother’s house, Joey Cape was able to create a beautiful, warm record that captures the pure essence of its songs. Hushed and haunted, there’s an almost Nick Drakeian poignancy to these 12 songs, especially on the wistful “The Poetry in Our Mistakes” and the forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting “Saturday Night Fever.” “Come Home,” a song inspired directly by words his mother had spoken to him on the phone, is a beautifully melancholy, slightly folky tune full of hurt and longing that also manages to be reassuring at the same time. Elsewhere, “Under the Doormat” is a harrowingly beautiful ode to a lost love of the past. “Check Your Ego at the Door” is a ballroom lament steeped in timelessness, while “Fictional” is a scornful take on the false images and lives that proliferate on social media. Despite Joey Cape’s isolation while writing A Good Year to Forget, his fans will hear much more than just a voice, guitar, and bass on this record. Indeed, he ended up playing a plethora of instruments when recording the album, including electric and lap steel guitars, piano, mandolin, and drums. Additional final flourishes were added at fellow Bad Astronaut band member Thom Flowers' studio and Sean MCCUE's Coyote Road Studios. A Good Year to Forget finds the positive in the negatives to become a record of pure triumphant beauty.

Face TO Face are a rarity in the music world: A band that not only helped define a sound, but who continue to fine-tune their music with each subsequent release. This is undoubtedly true of the band’s tenth full-length No Way out but Through, a melodic-punk masterpiece teeming with blistering guitar riffs, fleetfingered basslines and vocal harmonies that are so infectious they’ll be rattling around your brain for weeks on end. Then again this should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed face to face’s 30-year history. While their sound is rooted in the West Coast punk genre they helped pioneer, No Way out but Through raises the sonic bar when it comes to songwriting, arranging and musicianship. This time around, singer/guitarist Trever Keith was able to get out of his proverbial comfort zone by renting a cabin near Malibu, California, and holed up with bassist Scott Shiflett as they transformed a collection of their respective demos and ideas into the polished recording you hear today. Production-wise, the band teamed up again with Juno Award winning producer Siegfried Meier and Davey Warsop (Foo Fighters, Green Day) and later was mixed and mastered by Jason Livermore at the legendary Blasting Room. The result is an album that’s sound quality mirrors its sonic weight and is the best-sounding face to face album to date.

It's going off and The Chisel are back to cause a bit of bovver. Following a trio of explosive singles, the band finally bring us their debut full-length album, Retaliation, on the London-based punk institution La Vida Es Un Mus. Having formed in early 2020 and featuring a crew of members with long-term associations to the London punk scene, The Chisel quickly secured a reputation as one of the most exciting bands from a pool of contemporaries that includes Chubby & The Gang, Stingray and Big Cheese. Their sound is rooted firmly in Punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. Retaliation is an unmistakably British record that draws a line from 1982 up to the present day, pushing its way into your collection and torching your stereo. Opening with the agitated force of 'Unlawful Execution', the tone is firmly set by a song that addresses the brutality of the Met Police ("Tell me what's the difference between right or wrong / When a copper gets to blast a lad who did nothing wrong"). 'Come See Me' is a ferocious ode to camaraderie in the face of mouthy boneheads and bellends. 'Shit Life Syndrome' is a poisoned reference to the same cynical phrase used by physicians to describe the effects of people living under poverty and in the grips of substance abuse ("How can you expect people to act nicely, they've all been left on the edge of society"). It's one of many songs influenced by singer Cal's experiences of growing up in the working-class town of Blackpool. Cal states: "Blackpool as a town is often overlooked or even looked down upon, I wanted to write lyrics which gave the people of my town a voice". With tunes like these The Chisel show that they'll never pull any punches. However, beyond the fury and the swagger there's another side that plays to an additional strength; the ability to write a memorable hook. Garrison was born in Boston during the heyday of the prolific, late ‘90s, post-hardcore scene. Shortly after forming, the band found themselves signed to Revelation Records where they released their first EP, The Bend Before The Break. The EP was well received among fans and critics and made a place for itself as a notable release for the post-hardcore movement. The Bend Before The Break opens with “Serious Heavy Drama,” which immediately hooks you with its melody, and slowly builds to a brooding and emotional breakdown where singer Joseph Grillo screams his words in a final emotional crescendo. The EP rises with pop melodies such as “Harlow” (a song that remained a fan favorite even after three more releases) and ends with the somber and dark “Untitled,” embracing more of a Midwest-emo theme, and bringing to mind a band like Mineral. Though Garrison went on to release numerous albums on Revelation Records, Iodine Recordings, and Simba Recordings,The Bend Before The Break remained their most popular release. The record harnessed a raw and genuine youthful energy. Nearly 23 years later, Iodine Recordings presents The Bend Before The Break for the first time as a full-length LP, including “You’re Devastated, I’m Sure” and “Untitled,” previously unavailable on vinyl. The new B-side includes rare and previously unreleased material that spans the band’s history from 1998 to 2004, including their first 7” record 24 and their split EP with UK’s Hundred Reasons, all fully remastered and featuring all new artwork by Dan McCarthy. The Bend Before The Break remains a relevant and vital volume in the post-hardcore and emo canon.

The story of Tørsö starts on the Punch tour with Italy’s Holy in 2013. Jesuit was a nefarious, mid-’90s, heavy band from Virginia Beach that released a small batch of demos, 7”s, and comp tracks while absolutely terrorizing and uprooting DIY hardcore shows around the country at the time. Upon dissolution, members went on to THE Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, OLD MAN Gloom, Doomriders, Cave IN, and Bleach Everything. This release is a reissue of the band’s entire discography, originally issued by Magic Bullet Records in 2011. It compiles the band’s 7” on Hydra Head, their cover of Black SABBATH’s “Hole In The Sky” from Hydra Head’s In These Black Days compilation series, the self-titled 7” on Reservoir Records, and the original self-released demo tape. All tracks were restored, remixed, and remastered by Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio, where everything but the demo was originally recorded. The 2021 edition of the record features a new cover colorway, a translucent, hot pink LP, a clear 7” flexi with silver foil, and a giant fold-out poster that contains all lyrics, liner notes, and over 100 photos. Proceeds from this release will help fund public concrete skatepark additions and repairs.

Recordings were taped on September 16th in 1973 at the infamous Whiskey a Go-Go in Los Angeles and captures the Stooges at a pivotal point, just as they were about to break up. Iggy & the Stooges careen out of control as the singer taunts the audience and the band tries to keep it together. A handful of rarities, such as "Head On," are featured in addition to a selection of material drawn mainly from Raw Power, but the actual songs aren't that important -- it's how the band sounds, and they do sound raw, abrasive, and frightening. Die Nachfrage liess auch in der Folge nicht nach und so drängte Ralph Records The Residents eine zweite EP - Buster & Glen - aufzunehmen, die dann schlussendlich zusammen mit Duck Stab! als LP-Release zu einem Klassiker und großem Verkaufserfolg wurde. Einige Jahre später, zwischen 1981 und 1988 übernahm Night Flight, eine damals populäre Sendung im US-Kabelfernsehen, Video-Clips von The Residents in ihr reguläres Programm auf - insbesondere "Hello Skinny", das legendäre Video zum Duck Stab! / Buster & Glen Album. Für viele Fans der Band war Night Flight der erste Berührungspunkt mit The Residents. Im Jahr 2016 feierte der Sender unter dem Namen Night Flight plus fröhliche Wiederauferstehung als Internet Streaming-Service und bat The Residents anlässlich des 40ten Jubiläums des Programms um einen Video-Beitrag. Da die Gruppe ohnehin an einer Live-Version von Duck Stab! als Teil ihrer 50ten Jubiläums-Tour im Jahr 2022 arbeitete, bot sich Duck Stab! Alive! als eine naheliegende Wahl an, um daraus eine Show für Night Flight plus zu produzieren. Und so begaben sich The Residents unter der Leitung von Regisseur John Sanborn und Kameramann Frazer Bradshaw vom 19. bis 21. Mai 2021 in die 25th Street Studios in Oakland, Kalifornien um die neu ausgearbeitete Performance Duck Stab! Alive! Live im Studio aufzunehmen. Die spektakulären Ergebnisse dokumentiert auf zwei 45 RPM 10" Vinylplatten sowie einer Video DVD bilden den Inhalt dieser aufwändigen und limitierten Sammler-Box. Weltweit auf 3.000 Stück limitiert!
