Looking at Dan Andriano's catalog, one might assume that making new music is old hat for the veteran vocalist, songwriter, bassist and primary member of the beloved Chicago punk outfit Alkaline Trio. Decades into his prolific career, though, Andriano is just as in love with the process as he was in those early days of sweaty clubs and cramped vans. On Andriano's new Epitaph Records album, Dear Darkness, that un?ceasing passion is evident on this solo, self-produced project, which follows his 2015 release (as Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room) Party Adjacent, finds Andriano venturing into deeply personal lyrical territory while also pushing the limits of just what his unclassifiable sound can be. While off the road in 2020, Dan Andriano amassed a sizable collection of ideas, including a small batch of songs he felt were ready to bring into the studio. He sent a handful of those tracks out to close friends and trusted collaborators and was particularly encouraged by the excited response from Mike Park, an old friend and creative confidante whose Asian Man Records released Alkaline Trio's first two albums. Park was thrilled by what he heard and encouraged Andriano to consider a working on a new solo project. It was near the end of 2020, and enough strides had been made in COVID-19 safety that Andriano felt safe to travel from his home in St. Augustine, Florida to Park's studio in San Jose, California. "He could tell that I was pent up and anxious and needed to do something productive and positive, and just get out of here," Andriano says of Park. "So he was very helpful in getting me out there." While in San Jose, Park introduced Andriano to brothers Randy and Dylan Moore both of whom would end up playing alongside Andriano on Dear Darkness. The group originally intended to record an EP, but Andriano had so much material to work with - and felt such a natural rapport with the Moore brothers - that the impromptu session led to a full-length album.

Sometimes, the best place to begin is at the end. If you really want to dig deep into Illusory Walls, the fourth album by THE WORLD IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE & I AM NO LONGER AFRAID TO DIE, it definitely helps to do that. That's because epic closer "Fewer Afraid" -all 19 minutes, 44 seconds of it-doesn't just revisit the themes and ideas on the ten songs that precede it, but also offers a self-aware summary of the Connecticut band's entire history. It's the conclusion of all the stories within the record as well as a nod to all the lives that helped make them-little glimpses of everything that's come before, on both a micro, immediate level, and a more universal one. "That song is a higher level look at my whole life and the whole world," explains vocalist/guitarist David F. Bello, "as well as the album, our band and our discography. It places the band in the context of the rest of the world, as if we're listening to everything that came before. It touches on all the themes of the previous songs, but there are also callbacks to songs from earlier in our career. But in this song, they're the object, not the subject-I'm talking about a world in which these things happen, not talking about these things happening." Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band-completed by Steven K. Buttery (drums and percussion), Joshua Cyr (bass/vocals) and Katie Dvorak (vocals/synth)-had nothing but time to realize the full extent of their musical and thematic aspirations. And so, four years on from lauded third album Always Foreign, they were able to make what is undoubtedly the band's most ambitious and epic record to date. Written and recorded remotely-a first for the band-Illusory Walls takes on the weight of human existence while it's buckling under the pressure of today's near-dystopian society. Personal anxieties and political struggles collide with a series of portentous, apocalyptic and dramatic tunes, resulting in some of the darkest music the band has made since forming in 2009.

Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician's songs unfold like short fiction: they're densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. These songs focused on a theme by intertwining the individual characters stories of a group of friends who gathered for one night at the same local bar. Wilds includes songs from those same writing sessions, that did not fit into the Skyline storyline and had their own singular iden?tity apart from that album, though he does revisit with his old friends Judy and Jeremy in this outing.

A new instrumental album of acoustic guitar playing from Six Organs of Admittance's Ben Chasny!KPM Music, the legendary British library music company, extended an offer to Ben to make some songs for their library. The field of library music (music made for hire, for use in placement in films and advertising) is one that's come to public consciousness only relatively recently in the long century of record-making, but the influence of such records has been felt for years in the aesthetics of many diverse artists, including several who've recorded for Drag City. So it's a special thing for Drag City, whose appreciation for Ben's unique artistry has been borne out over a countless variety of releases, to issue this really amazing entry in both the KPM Music tradition and the ever-expanding Ben Chasny/Six Organs of Admittance ouvre.Ben chose the acoustic guitar for these recordings after considering the width and breadth of possible music he could make for the occasion. His approach while playing it was simple - deceptively so: to make music as present and immediate and beautiful as possible. This type of playing requires a deep breath before beginning, as it has to generate from within, as well as at the fingertips.The resulting music is inventive and engaging, both in and out of the astral style of Ben's music and the utilitarian genre of music to which he's contributing. The album's title is a clue to these dual intentions, as is Ben's use of his given name rather than the 6OOA alias he has preferred in his career. Just when you thought every loner folk genius had been outed/discovered, hyped, and pontificated about, a new/old challenger lurks in the murky depths of time...and Maine. Sure, you have your Skip Spences, Dave Bixbys, Stone Harbours, and Perry Leopolds already, but have you heard the lonesome sound of Bill Stone? Well, don't feel bad or "unkool", hardly anyone has--unless you lived in rural Maine in the early 70s and grabbed his barely-ever seen LP in the day. Titled simply Stone, Bill's mysterious album was pressed in the micro-est of quantities, covering wistful, airy psychedelia on par with the UK's Mark Fry's classic Dreaming of Alice, while still evoking the earthy, evening-hour melancholy of Leonard Cohen or Tom Rapp. Stone was also especially influenced by one Donny P. Leitch, one Robby Zimmerman, and much trad folk, while growing up in his hometown of Old Town, Maine. Stone started out playing in a few small folk ensembles while also moonlighting with occasional solo gigs, finally recording this lone platter in 1969 in a pottery studio (!?) on a 2-track Panasonic tape recorder in Boothbay, Maine (where he says, they competed with a cat in heat). The LP features Tom Blackwell/Bill Stone-guitars, Arthur Webster-bass, Bob Blackwell/Skip Smith-drums, Bill/Beth Waterhouse on vocals. It also seems cover artist Doug Bane went on to become an acclaimed cosmic painter--committing loads of animals, psychedelic scenes, and Native American portraits to canvas, who knew? But we digress--anyhow, seems Stone's solo career slowed down after marriage hit, and he transitioned to playing covers in bars for cash, but after acquiring a masters and doctorate in education, he moved into the teaching walk of life. Bill published books and articles on subjects as diverse as school counseling and chaos theory--but now retired, he's returned to music, even recording a new album of originals and traditional numbers, based on his experiences as a cab driver (another wrinkle in the Stone Saga we must hear more of someda...

Wenn Sie zum ersten Mal von Chuckamuck hören, gibt es einen guten Grund dafür: Dies ist ein über die persönlichen und kommerziellen Barrieren hinaus, die es für eine europäische Band gibt, die in ihren muttersprachlichen Muttersprache. Sprache ist ein kniffliges Geschäft im Rock and Roll, vor allem für eine deutsche Band. Sich damit abfinden, singen auf Englisch, und offen sein für den dominanten anglophonen Musikmarkt, während Sie hoffen, dass Ihre Melodien mit lokalen Szenen und Fans, nicht nur riskiert, eine Band als weniger einzigartig abrechnen, sondern auch leugnet sie das Recht der einheimischen Poesie, indem sie ihre bekannteste Sprache anwendet, um sich lyrisch auszudrücken. Im größeren Musikmarkt war es akzeptabel, In parodistischen Stereotypen wie die Robotik von Kraftwerk oder gewalttätige sexuelle Bilder von Rammstein, die für internationalen Publikum. Im Laufe der 14-jährigen Karriere von Chuckamuck haben ihre von ihren Teenagerjahren als "Punkrock Rimbauds" bis hin zu tränenreicher Mystik, seelenvoller Sehnsucht, despotischen Ärger und vieles mehr. Und als engagierte Künstler und Lyriker haben sie ihre deutschsprachigen Fans; aufgrund dieser Sprachbarriere waren sie jedoch frustriert, das volle "Chuckamuck-Erlebnis" mit Fans während ihrer Europa-Tourneen mit The Black Lips zu teilen, King Khan and the Shrines, Beatsteaks, Demons Claws and The Strange Boys.

Als Gründungsmitglied und Haupthandwerker der Chuckamuck-Welt sagt Oska Wald: "Man denkt "seine Musik, es wird in jeder Sprache verstanden werden", aber Chuckamuck ist so viel mehr als unsere Songs, ist es ein Unternehmen unserer Kunst, Animation, Live-Shows, Videos, Comic-Bücher, eine ganze Welt, die wir haben produziert". Das bringt uns zum Language Barrier Projekt: Im Wesentlichen ist dieses äußerst ambitionierte Projekt ein Chuckamuck "Best Of", mit Remakes von Perlen von verschiedenen Perioden der Band seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2006, übersetzt in 8 Sprachen (Italienisch, Französisch, Spanisch, Schwedisch, Polnisch, Englisch, Hebräisch und Japanisch), aufgenommen von Bandmitglied und Songwriter Lorenz mit langjährigen Chuckamuck-Ingenieurs-Kumpels Thomas Götz und Max Power im O'tool Studio. Jedes Lied wird eindrucksvoll in seiner eigenen einzigartigen Videoclip, der die Bilder und Stimmungen der Band definiert. Das gesamte Projekt wurde über drei Jahre mit viel Geduld und Herz. Inspiriert von den Bemühungen der Beatles in den 60er Jahren, die es für angebracht hielten, unbeholfene Versionen ihrer frühen Hits ins Französische und Deutsche sowie die Fülle der weltweiten 60er-Jahre-Bands, die Popsongs aufgenommen haben in eine "dritte Sprache" durch naiv und phonetisch singend auf Englisch wollte Chuckamuck diese Aufregung, potenzielle neue Zielgruppen zu erreichen und tatsächlich verstanden zu werden. Ein weiterer großer Einfluss hatte die makellose Mehrsprachigkeit ihrer Staatsakt-Labelkollegen Stereo Total. Ein paar Elemente machen dieses Projekt zu etwas ganz Besonderem. Erstens beschäftigte Chuckamuck als Berliner Band die Hilfe ihrer lokalen internationalen Familie, um bei den Übersetzungen zu helfen. Diese Weltklasse-Künstler arbeiteten gemeinsam Lieder in ihrer eigenen Sprache nachzubilden, so dass die Lieferungen das Leben und Einsichten der Originalwerke. Dazu gehört die sensationelle Schweizer Volksmusikerin Melissa Kassab, der bekannte schwedische Comiczeichner Crippa Almqvist und der japanische Karikaturist und Animator SHOXXX. Von besonderem Interesse für die Platte ist die Transformation von 'Eis Am Stiel', einem älteren Chuckamuck klassisch, inspiriert vom gleichnamigen deutsch-israelischen Kultfilm. Übersetzt von den Bands' das neueste Mitglied, Amit Alcalai von The Gondors, ist der Übergang in die Originalsprache des Films vor allem kulturell und beeindruckend. In ähnlicher Weise lässt der Hit "Sayonara" es klingen wie die 80er Jahre Japanische neue Welle Song es immer gebettelt zu sein und ist sehr süchtig. Chuckamucks Hymne auf ihre eigene ironische Ennui, deutscher zu sein und wie eine 70er-Jahre-Nashville-Band zu klingen, 20.000 km auf Französisch durchgeführt akzentuiert ihren ehrlichen Wunsch und ist unglaublich effektiv. Darüber hinaus wurden 11 komplette Musikvideos für jeden Song dieses Albums produziert, alle inklusive original handgezeichneter Animationen des preisgekrönten Karikaturisten Oska Wald. Drei Wochen nach eine besonders rauhe Pilzreise, Oska hatte eine Rückblende auf einen Moment der Intensität und visuellen Störung von der Reise – und begann zu zeichnen, Platte für Platte, die Original-Animationen, die drei anstrengende Jahre weiter, um diese kreativen Meisterwerke zu vervollständigen. Rock and roll was a relief after the rigour of Henry Cow. That was one of the thoughts in Anthony Moore's brain in late 1975. Of course, leaving Henry Cow had meant the dissolution of the band he'd founded, Slapp Happy, as the two groups had essentially merged over the previous year. Still, there was plenty yet to do with music, and with Anthony's propensity for odd left turns, a solo career in the pop world seemed like a fine option to follow upon his adventure in soundtracks for experimental films, tape-based modern composition and avant-pop and experimental rock. For "the troubadour with Revoxes", this venture into playing guitar and singing in a professional context was a new thing. To access the pop life, Anthony signed a solo deal with Virgin - cutting sessions with producer Peter Jenner (Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, Edgar Broughton Band) and some of Britain's new generation of progressive musicians facilities like Abbey Road, Air and Richard Branson's Oxfordshire getaway, The Manor. While the stars didn't align back in the day (the fantastic sounds recorded for OUT didn't see release until a CD issue of the late 1990s), we're finally making those historic recordings on vinyl with the long-lost original artwork restored. Kicking it off with a tricky asymmetrical keyboard riff reminiscent of Eno's Tiger Mountain phase and a belting Cale-esque vocal recounting the macho adventure narrative tone of that era's Dylan and Roger McGuinn, "Stitch In Time" floats essential elements of the mid-70s British art-rock boom with dreamy pop effervescence.It's been worth the 44-year (!) wait to get Anthony's full vision restored to OUT - an absolute lost chapter from mid-70s, proto-new wave Britain, bringing to mind the bright and subversive sounds of Wyatt, Ayers and so many other trail-blazers from that time while providing a worthy precursor to Anthony's celebrated 1979 LP, Flying Won't Help. A fantastic joy to the ears!
