Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician's songs unfold like short fiction: they're densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. Like he's done throughout his career, Shauf wrote, performed, arranged, and produced every song on his new album Wilds at his studio space in the west end of Toronto. Over the course of a year-and-a-half, Shauf had written more than 50 songs, and pared down this massive body of work, into a single album's worth of material, which became 2020's highly acclaimed The Neon Skyline album. These songs focused on a theme by intertwining the individual characters stories of a group of friends who gathered for one night at the same local bar. Wilds includes songs from those same writing sessions, that did not fit into the Skyline storyline and had their own singular iden?tity apart from that album, though he does revisit with his old friends Judy and Jeremy in this outing.

Suck My Shirt" ist das vierte Album für THE Coathangers. "Es balanciert auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Zu-viel-Denken und Einfach-Machen", erklärt Gitarristin Crook Kid (Julia Kugel) in Bezug auf ihr Songwriting. Diese Zweischneidigkeit wird beim Album Opener ,Follow Me" sofort deutlich. Der Song hat eine klassische Coathangers Melodie mit dem heiseren Gesang von Stephanie Luke, der sich dem typisch kantigen Garagenrock der Coathangers hingibt. Doch dann kommt der Refrain und schlägt mit einem der eingängigsten Hooks in der Geschichte der Coathangers zu, just bevor es mit dem dissonanten Gekreische einer Gitarre weitergeht. Von da aus geht es mit ,Shut Up" weiter, einem Titel, der sich an der koketten Rotzigkeit der ersten Platte orientiert. Der Song hat seine spitzen Gitarrenriffs und den herausgerufenen Refrain, doch hier klingen die Coathangers weniger wie die Gute-Laune-Version von Huggy Bear und mehr wie der Art Pop der späten Minutemen. Alte Coathangers Fans werden die neuen Versionen von "Merry Go Round," "Smother," "Adderall," und "Derek's Song" von ihren limitierten 7"s erkennen. Hier im Kontext des Album zeigt sich, dass diese Songs ins Ganze passen und keine isolierten Tracks am anderen Ende des Coathangers-Spektrums sind. Wenn sich das Album dann mit der demütigen Pop-Perfektion von ,Drive" dem Ende zuneigt, ist es schwer zu glauben, dass wir hier dieselbe Band hören, die ihren Ruf rotzigem Bombast wie ,Don't Touch My Shit" verdankt.

Buffalo Tom (Bill Janovitz, Chris Colbourn and Tom Maginnis) formed at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1984 - a breeding ground of post punk guitar bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies. The three longstanding bandmates recognize the achievement of their longevity as a creative unit. Initially offering a raw, propulsive sound that emphasized Janovitz's imposing guitar squall on such early releases as 1989's Buffalo Tom and 1990's Birdbrain, Buffalo Tom's early approach gave way to a more melodic, yet no less distinctive, style on 1992's Let Me Come Over (including the hit ballad "Taillights Fade"), 1993's Big Red Letter Day (including the hit "Soda Jerk") and 1995's Sleepy Eyed.Their friendship with J. Mascis helped the band's career take off by assisting with the production on the band's first two albums; their self-titled debut, and Birdbrain.Since Birdbrain's release 30 years ago, many songs from it album have become live favorites including the epic title track "Birdbrain", and "Enemy". Um es kurz zu machen: das hier ist besser als alles, was wir erwartet haben. PINBACK hätten auf Autopilot ein weiteres hochgelobtes Album aufnehmen können, das höchstwahrscheinlich in jeder Menge Jahresbestenlisten aufgetaucht wäre, doch sie haben sich dafür entschieden, das Unerreichbare ins Visier zu nehmen. Das Resultat ist ein einziger Triumph. Die Eckpfeiler sind noch immer vorhanden: die einzigartigen Basskünste von Zach Smith verschmelzen noch immer Rhythmus und Melodie im Gleichschritt; die unglaubliche Direktheit der Stimme von Rob Crow könnte sogar das Rezitieren des Telefonbuchs phantastisch klingen lassen. Es ist die Musik und die textliche Interaktion, die die Musik von PINBACK von Anfang an besonders haben klingen lassen. Der Unterschied ist die vorzügliche Kontrolle über die Dynamik und eine größere emotionale Spannweite. ,The World Is." ist das kompletteste und tiefgründigste Album von PINBACK, der beste Moment in der Karriere einer Band, auf deren ungezügelte Brillanz wir uns schon immer verlassen haben, die wir jedoch nie wieder für selbstverständlich halten werden.

Manchester rock band OCEANSIZE built a career and reputation of constructing sonic soundscapes from out of nowhere into the most monolithic, dynamic behemoths heard in aeons. The band formed in 1998 and released four albums before calling it a day in 2011. Taking its title from the band's observations of how apathetic the world was becoming in 2005 and the pseudo-caring mentality that was sweeping the nation at that time, Everyone Into Position is an album that explores every emotion, sweeping the listener up in its beauty, its wholeness and musical greatness.The album was recorded and produced by Dan Austin at The Works Studio in Stockport, UK and mixed at Sarm Studios, London, by Coldplay producer Danton Supple.The Soundgarden-esque opener "The Charm Offensive" tells of an inner feeling of political corruptness. "Heaven Alive" - is packed with a new-found groove, and deals with drug taking and the verbal bullshit that transpires. But it's the final three songs on the album that are arguably some of Oceansize's most brilliant moments. Described by the singer Mike Vennart as the 'church suite' - listen to "Mine Host", "You Can't Keep A Bad Man Down" and "Ornament / The Last Wrongs" collectively and you understand just what Mike means. Sometimes, the best place to begin is at the end. If you really want to dig deep into Illusory Walls, the fourth album by THE WORLD IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE & I AM NO LONGER AFRAID TO DIE, it definitely helps to do that. That's because epic closer "Fewer Afraid" -all 19 minutes, 44 seconds of it-doesn't just revisit the themes and ideas on the ten songs that precede it, but also offers a self-aware summary of the Connecticut band's entire history. It's the conclusion of all the stories within the record as well as a nod to all the lives that helped make them-little glimpses of everything that's come before, on both a micro, immediate level, and a more universal one. "That song is a higher level look at my whole life and the whole world," explains vocalist/guitarist David F. Bello, "as well as the album, our band and our discography. It places the band in the context of the rest of the world, as if we're listening to everything that came before. It touches on all the themes of the previous songs, but there are also callbacks to songs from earlier in our career. But in this song, they're the object, not the subject-I'm talking about a world in which these things happen, not talking about these things happening." Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band-completed by Steven K. Buttery (drums and percussion), Joshua Cyr (bass/vocals) and Katie Dvorak (vocals/synth)-had nothing but time to realize the full extent of their musical and thematic aspirations. And so, four years on from lauded third album Always Foreign, they were able to make what is undoubtedly the band's most ambitious and epic record to date. Written and recorded remotely-a first for the band-Illusory Walls takes on the weight of human existence while it's buckling under the pressure of today's near-dystopian society. Personal anxieties and political struggles collide with a series of portentous, apocalyptic and dramatic tunes, resulting in some of the darkest music the band has made since forming in 2009.

Looking at Dan Andriano's catalog, one might assume that making new music is old hat for the veteran vocalist, songwriter, bassist and primary member of the beloved Chicago punk outfit Alkaline Trio. Decades into his prolific career, though, Andriano is just as in love with the process as he was in those early days of sweaty clubs and cramped vans. On Andriano's new Epitaph Records album, Dear Darkness, that un?ceasing passion is evident on this solo, self-produced project, which follows his 2015 release (as Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room) Party Adjacent, finds Andriano venturing into deeply personal lyrical territory while also pushing the limits of just what his unclassifiable sound can be. While off the road in 2020, Dan Andriano amassed a sizable collection of ideas, including a small batch of songs he felt were ready to bring into the studio. He sent a handful of those tracks out to close friends and trusted collaborators and was particularly encouraged by the excited response from Mike Park, an old friend and creative confidante whose Asian Man Records released Alkaline Trio's first two albums. Park was thrilled by what he heard and encouraged Andriano to consider a working on a new solo project. It was near the end of 2020, and enough strides had been made in COVID-19 safety that Andriano felt safe to travel from his home in St. Augustine, Florida to Park's studio in San Jose, California. "He could tell that I was pent up and anxious and needed to do something productive and positive, and just get out of here," Andriano says of Park. "So he was very helpful in getting me out there." While in San Jose, Park introduced Andriano to brothers Randy and Dylan Moore both of whom would end up playing alongside Andriano on Dear Darkness. The group originally intended to record an EP, but Andriano had so much material to work with - and felt such a natural rapport with the Moore brothers - that the impromptu session led to a full-length album.

So it's a special thing for Drag City, whose appreciation for Ben's unique artistry has been borne out over a countless variety of releases, to issue this really amazing entry in both the KPM Music tradition and the ever-expanding Ben Chasny/Six Organs of Admittance ouvre.Ben chose the acoustic guitar for these recordings after considering the width and breadth of possible music he could make for the occasion. His approach while playing it was simple - deceptively so: to make music as present and immediate and beautiful as possible. This type of playing requires a deep breath before beginning, as it has to generate from within, as well as at the fingertips.The resulting music is inventive and engaging, both in and out of the astral style of Ben's music and the utilitarian genre of music to which he's contributing. The album's title is a clue to these dual intentions, as is Ben's use of his given name rather than the 6OOA alias he has preferred in his career. Rock and roll was a relief after the rigour of Henry Cow. That was one of the thoughts in Anthony Moore's brain in late 1975. Of course, leaving Henry Cow had meant the dissolution of the band he'd founded, Slapp Happy, as the two groups had essentially merged over the previous year. Still, there was plenty yet to do with music, and with Anthony's propensity for odd left turns, a solo career in the pop world seemed like a fine option to follow upon his adventure in soundtracks for experimental films, tape-based modern composition and avant-pop and experimental rock. For "the troubadour with Revoxes", this venture into playing guitar and singing in a professional context was a new thing. To access the pop life, Anthony signed a solo deal with Virgin - cutting sessions with producer Peter Jenner (Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, Edgar Broughton Band) and some of Britain's new generation of progressive musicians facilities like Abbey Road, Air and Richard Branson's Oxfordshire getaway, The Manor. While the stars didn't align back in the day (the fantastic sounds recorded for OUT didn't see release until a CD issue of the late 1990s), we're finally making those historic recordings on vinyl with the long-lost original artwork restored. Kicking it off with a tricky asymmetrical keyboard riff reminiscent of Eno's Tiger Mountain phase and a belting Cale-esque vocal recounting the macho adventure narrative tone of that era's Dylan and Roger McGuinn, "Stitch In Time" floats essential elements of the mid-70s British art-rock boom with dreamy pop effervescence.It's been worth the 44-year (!) wait to get Anthony's full vision restored to OUT - an absolute lost chapter from mid-70s, proto-new wave Britain, bringing to mind the bright and subversive sounds of Wyatt, Ayers and so many other trail-blazers from that time while providing a worthy precursor to Anthony's celebrated 1979 LP, Flying Won't Help. In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten hat sich Arabrot durch mehrere Iterationen gewandelt; sie haben verschiedene Formen und Größen ausprobiert, verschiedene Stimmungen aufgenommen und die Außengrenzen verschiedener Genres erkundet und klangen dabei nie weniger als ganz sie selbst. 2023 erscheint ihr zehntes Album, Of Darkness and Light - ein Grund zum Feiern. Kjetil Nernes war der Kern und die Konstante von Arabrot, und seit einiger Zeit schlägt neben ihm ein weiteres Herz im perfekten Gleichklang. Karin Park, eine Partnerin im Leben, in der Liebe und in der Musik, trägt seit zehn Jahren in unterschiedlichem Maße zu Arabrot bei, und auf Of Darkness and Light ist ihre Präsenz sowohl gefestigt als auch verstärkt. Die beiden leben zusammen in einer Kirche in dem schwedischen Dorf, in dem Karin aufgewachsen ist, und haben sich ihr eigenes Reich geschaffen, in dem sie ihre Kinder, ihr Handwerk und ihre kreativen Visionen pflegen. Of Darkness and Light brauchte einige Zeit, um Gestalt anzunehmen. Der Lebenslauf von Produzent Alain Johannes liest sich wie ein Who's Who der Rockmusik. Er ist selbst ein versierter Musiker (er spielte mit PJ Harvey, Queens of the Stone Age und Them Crooked Vultures und hatte auch seine eigene Band Eleven) und verfügt über langjährige Erfahrung als Produzent. Es war seine Arbeit an Mark Lanegans Album Straight Songs of Sorrow aus dem Jahr 2020, die Kjetil auf ihn aufmerksam machte, bevor Kismet eingriff und die beiden zusammenbrachte. Die Worte werden dem unbändigen, konkupiszenten Verlangen kaum gerecht, das sich hinter ihrem Schlachtruf We Want Blood verbirgt - einem hymnischen, mit den Füßen stampfenden Vorstoß, der in der Mitte des Albums liegt. An anderer Stelle stehen düstere Mörderballaden neben feierlichen "Fuck Yeah"-Momenten der Freude; ihre reduzierte Herangehensweise an die Instrumentierung schmälert nicht den Reichtum ihres Sounds. Just when you thought every loner folk genius had been outed/discovered, hyped, and pontificated about, a new/old challenger lurks in the murky depths of time...and Maine. Sure, you have your Skip Spences, Dave Bixbys, Stone Harbours, and Perry Leopolds already, but have you heard the lonesome sound of Bill Stone? Well, don't feel bad or "unkool", hardly anyone has--unless you lived in rural Maine in the early 70s and grabbed his barely-ever seen LP in the day. Titled simply Stone, Bill's mysterious album was pressed in the micro-est of quantities, covering wistful, airy psychedelia on par with the UK's Mark Fry's classic Dreaming of Alice, while still evoking the earthy, evening-hour melancholy of Leonard Cohen or Tom Rapp. Stone was also especially influenced by one Donny P. Leitch, one Robby Zimmerman, and much trad folk, while growing up in his hometown of Old Town, Maine. Stone started out playing in a few small folk ensembles while also moonlighting with occasional solo gigs, finally recording this lone platter in 1969 in a pottery studio (!?) on a 2-track Panasonic tape recorder in Boothbay, Maine (where he says, they competed with a cat in heat). The LP features Tom Blackwell/Bill Stone-guitars, Arthur Webster-bass, Bob Blackwell/Skip Smith-drums, Bill/Beth Waterhouse on vocals. It also seems cover artist Doug Bane went on to become an acclaimed cosmic painter--committing loads of animals, psychedelic scenes, and Native American portraits to canvas, who knew? But we digress--anyhow, seems Stone's solo career slowed down after marriage hit, and he transitioned to playing covers in bars for cash, but after acquiring a masters and doctorate in education, he moved into the teaching walk of life. Bill published books and articles on subjects as diverse as school counseling and chaos theory--but now retired, he's returned to music, even recording a new album of originals and traditional numbers, based on his experiences as a cab driver (another wrinkle in the Stone Saga we must hear more of someda...

Tommy Guerrero machte zunächst als Skater bei der legendären Bones Brigade der Skateboard Marke Powell Peralta neben Größen wie Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero oder Rodney Mullen in den 80ern auf sich aufmerksam. Nach Ende seiner aktiven Profikarriere als Skater stieg Tommy Guerrero Mitte der 90er ins Musikgeschäft ein. Er wurde Bassist bei Free Beer und Jet Black Crayon, hatte als Solokünstler jedoch mehr Erfolg. Sein Debütalbum wurde 1997 auf Galaxia veröffentlicht und von Kritikern gefeiert. Er veröffentlichte bis zur Auflösung 2004 bei Mo Wax und kollaborierte mit verschiedensten Künstlern wie Lyrics Born, Jack Johnson, Curumin, Bing Ji Ling oder Prefuse 73. Gemeinsam mit dem Beastie Boys-Keyboarder Money Mark und Shawn Lee trat er als Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls auf Ubiquity in Erscheinung. 2002 stellte er ein Album in der populären "Another Late Night" Serie zusammen. "No Man's Land" ist sein siebtes Album und bietet den nächsten Schritt seiner Entwicklung, Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop, Soul und psychedelische Elemente spannend miteinander zu verknüpfen.
