We received some terrible news just under 2 weeks ago - Kas aka Mixture passed. He never got to see the final part of his Potion Series drop. I spoke to him a week before asking him to send over his "descriptions" of each track, same as he has done on all the other volumes, but I never received them. This kinda brings into focus the reason behind all the archiving work I'm doing with Herring - that is, if you don't get these joints preserved, they could disappear without trace. Heads are reaching that age now. Seems like every week there's another one of our musical heroes that passes.

I want to send my deepest condolences to all who knew him - his family, friends, business contacts over his 30+ years in the game and all those who supported this series of releases on the label. I know for a fact that he was buzzing about this old material finally seeing the light of day. I was pleased to have been able to help him with that vision. Thanks for all K - at least the music will now last forever....

Dope NEW project from ex-The Madness artist Mr Ripley – Don’t sleep on this heat!!! Mr Ripley was born and raised in central New Jersey on the shore in a small town called Red Bank. He fell in love with hip hop since the start. But in 86 when he heard Rakim he knew this is what he wanted to do. So he told his mom and she brought him turn tables and a mixer for his 12th bday. It was non stop since then!!! In 1990 he started hanging out at a local studio with a few friends and began working on demo tapes. They linked up with Naji and Izniz and Rip’s cousin Huggy Bear who were already doing their thing as the Soul Patrol and Ghettolandz and they formed a group called The Madness [which you may have heard of!!]. They started doing shows and getting play on local radio shows andy released the infamous Ray’s of the Sun project and then split up soon after. But he never stopped making music.

This project came about from Rip & Shar the Analog Bastard connecting online from a mutual love for 90s hip hop. His beats are exactly what Rip was listening to growing up in the 90s. The collaboration was a natural one and we have here is the superb ‘Dirty Boxing’ album. Peep it yo!!!

The duo linked out of their shared love of the golden era and 90s hip-hop which then turned into a podcast under the same name (Chrome Bills). The podcast lasted for 10 years. During that time, the show provided a showcase for underground and independent rappers. In 2019 they released “The EP” which served as the group’s first musical release together, although both artists have been active since the early 2000s.

The album features guest verses from underground heavyweights Seez Mics, Dood Computer, Dezmatic, Elsphinx, Moses Rockwell, Big Slop, Bobby Noble, and Rapswell (Penpals) and a beat from SQ (Penpals)."

This was a digital only release, but now available on physical for the first time.

And this one is crazy time.

Only a handful [less than 10] of TPs were pressed back in 93 and then it got dropped from the label, so was never actually released. Killer EP from Kas' crew Party Poopers. Kas never found out why it never got the full release but he suggested that it was possibly due to the label owner's illness [that's sickness - i Mean, sure he was nicewiddit but he wasn't well this guy!]. The truth is lost in time but fortunately these recordings were recovered by Kas from his DAT tapes, so we can present to you the final release from the Herring x Kas collaboration. It's a crying shame he never got to see his pet project released, but at Least the music will live on.

Thanks for everything man - we'll miss you.....

On the really really reel, myself and the man like Matthew have been working together since the early 90’s. I used to spin for Nanosphere Complex, which comprised of Ash-Trai & Z-9, in the mid 90’s; I used to spin and jointly manage their group The Idiots in the late 90’s; the first release on Herring featured Rod Hotley/ly on the cult classic ‘Out To Lunch’ in 2001 and Herring released Burgundy Blood’s debut album ‘Suede Comet’ in 2014 and their debut EP ‘Cordial Stance’ in 2013. So without any cynicism or hi jinx of any kind, I can honestly say, this rare musibiz collaboration which has lasted a few years shy of 30 years, has been the most fulfilling I’ve had in the game [wipes tear from eye, then wipes ass, as writing this on the bog]. German beatmaker BoFaatBeatz is mad prolific on the boards. Dude has hundreds if not thousands of instrumentals. I hit him up when I saw he’d just recorded features with Recognize Ali and Kwest who’s projects I released earlier this year. We had a good chat and he kindly allowed Herring to have free reign over selecting tracks for an album project on Herring. There were loads to choose from and dude sent us a constant flow of newly recorded joints as well as some stuff from the Hannover archives!! He then remixed a load of those joints and dropped the remixes on digi and limited cd leaving the “original” unheard versions for this “The Original Nothing But Kung Fu LP” on Chopped Herring Records. In some ways similar to the well-received AJ Munson LP we dropped from late 2018, Kung Fu includes verses from a bunch of low key and new mc’s from all over the States. As well as the heavy hitters mentioned above, there is also an ill jawn by Nine & Smoothe The Hustler. What’s not to like?? Check it out y’all!!!
