A luminous soul with an indefatigable love for music, few artists have had careers as varied and successful as Izumi ‘Mimi’ Kobayashi. One of Japan’s leading jazz-funk pianists, she wrote and recorded cult albums with fusion legends at home and abroad. Obsessed with new electronic instruments, she penned some of the country’s most well-known TV themes and pioneered the use of drum machines in anime soundtracks.

A star in Japan, she moved to Europe to record global hits with Depeche Mode and Swing Out Sister, toured the world with the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra and made beats with Attica Blues’ Tony Nwachukwu. Now based in London, Mimi currently fronts Tokyo Riddim Band - the intergenerational live Japanese Reggae outfit born from Time Capsule’s acclaimed 2023 compilation of the same name - playing live shows and releasing a trio of recordings made at Prince Fatty’s studio.

Choice Cuts 1978-1983 collects eight recordings from four of Mimi’s first five albums – Sea Flight (1978) recorded with her group Flying Mimi Band, and Coconuts High (1981), Nuts Nuts Nuts (1982) and Tropicana (1983) under her own name.

The compilation opens with a syncopated electro-funk cover of Sergio Mendes’ iconic ‘Mas Que Nada’ (Tropicana) and the crisp and stripped back techno-pop of ‘Coffee Rumba’ (Nuts Nuts Nuts) with a keyboard bass line that would have made Stevie Wonder weep.

Alongside the off-beat synth jam ‘Quiet Explosion’ (Nuts Nuts Nuts) and piano samba of ‘Espresso’ (Tropicana), there’s space for two low slung soul-jazz numbers, ‘Naze’ and ‘Angel Sky’, from Sea Flight (1978) that recall the collaborations between Herbie Hancock and Kimiko Kasai. But it is around the two tracks from Mimi’s 1981 album Coconuts High that this compilation revolves (and from whose cover shoot it borrows).

Released on legendary guitarist Takanaka’s Kitty Records label, Coconuts High was recorded in LA with a backing band of jazz fusion icons, including Alex Acuña, Abraham Laborial, Harvey Mason and the Tower of Power horns. A riot of playful Latin-tinged jazz, funk and fusion with the off-beat spirit of Kid Creole & and the Coconuts, the album became a cult hit, attracting huge sums on the resale market. Here it’s the sultry, Minnie Riperton-esque ‘Crazy Love’, with its addictive groove and bittersweet melodies that makes the cut, alongside the steel drum-infused carnivalesque bounce of ‘Palm St’.

Capturing a highly creative and prolific moment in Mimi’s career, Choice Cuts 1978-1983 will introduce the idiosyncratic energy and playful verve of this under-the-radar pioneer to a wider audience for the first time. In the mid-70s, the self-produced album "Knights Company" was secretly produced and sold in very limited quantities as a 2-disc set (LP + EP) by members of the Knights, a light music department at Kitakyushu City University.

Not only is it a rarity, being almost unknown even among connoisseurs, but this work boasts high musicality, fusing a black soul feeling strongly influenced by James Brown and others, with a bluesy and melodic West Coast sound and AOR feel.

Its charm has not faded at all even now, many years after its production, and it continues to shine brilliantly.

A miraculous masterpiece that is the trajectory of youth by the sharp young people of northern Kyushu who once dedicated themselves to music!

It has been reborn as a compilation album with condensed content, complete with high-quality remastering by 8ronix (Bullpen lab.) and a delusional band designed by osagodard (browse depart/luminous body)!

Our miracle was triggered by a single word from the late Otaki. "Why don't you make an original and put it on an LP?" Everyone wondered if it was really possible to do something like that. But gradually, their eyes began to change. From there, they spent six months creating their own music. They wrote songs, arranged them together, practiced, stayed up all night recording, and even made a vinyl chloride record. I'll never forget the help from friends other than the band members. Established in 1968 by Romano Di Bari, Canopo was the first brick in the building of Flippermusic, the leading production music library in Italy. Revived after decades of hiatus, the label is now devoted to the reissue of Flippermusic’s historic catalogue of the 1960s, 1970s and 80s for the first time since its original release onto vinyl, digitized and re-mastered from the original master tapes so that these legendary recordings can be heard once again. This classic Italian production music was all recorded in Rome recording studios by a heritage of composers including Alessandro Alessandroni, Amedeo Tommasi, Gerardo Iacoucci, Remigio Ducros, Romolo Grano, Daniela Casa, Piero Montanari and many more. “Italiany Library Vaults” is a 12 track compilation bringing togheter the best tracks produced by Flippermusic in the first years of his activity. Ranging between different musical genres, it offers a wide range vision of this great musical legacy. This volume features a unique cover design, replica of the original albums published on Canopo label from late 60’s.

Over the summer of 2024 Adam F has been releasing a series of reboots on 181 Recordings - the label founded with vocalist and partner Kirsty Hawkshaw. As a precursor to his forthcoming album he follows up ‘Brand New Funk Revisited Reboots’ and ‘Music In My Mind Revisited / Reboots’ with painstakingly re-recorded and rebooted versions of his seminal track ‘Circles’, with a Reboot by Adam F, as well as the first official release of the Pola & Bryson & Adam F reboot - which has been causing a storm on DnB dancefloors worldwide.

“‘Circles’ is one of the first tracks where I could express my influences with no boundaries. The music became known as Drum n’ Bass but started off as hard core Rave and Jungle. One of the greatest things about it for me was that I could express myself through that medium using all my influences; funk, soul, reggae and jazz - freely and unrestricted.” says Adam F on the release.

“Circles has evolved over time with very solid and rich roots. Behind the hooks, basslines and such there are great textures. Saxophone, trumpet, Keyboards and synthesisers contributing to a free flowing arrangement drawing on my love of jazz musicians indulging my own personal imaginative dreamscape of sound. Ultimately I want it to be crafted into something of a listener's story and journey that people can hang their hats on as well as their hearts.”

5ilth is album number five from Belgian experimental electronic music duo Suumhow. The album is the follow-up to the, previously hidden, full-length Extra Failed Items. 5ilth finds the duo pushing their digital grittiness to new heights. Suumhow experimented with the limits of folding audio into analog video equipment for the album then further pushing the aural boundaries within the digital realm. As the title suggests, the sonics on 5ilth can be incredibly filthy, often recalling the pixelated equivalent of a sand storm or locust plague. These monolithic moments of clipping and swirling 1s and 0s give way to warmer flashes of analog respite, and in some cases, the clipping itself is somehow shimmeringly melodic. As with their previous efforts, 5ilth does have its share of glitchy distorted beatwork that pushes and pulls the listener through the squall. It's a gratifying listen with equal parts: tribunal and reprieve and hold and release.
