Originally released in 1988 ‘Hot Rock’ was the final single from Pennsylvanian based roots reggae band House Of Assembly. The band, comprising main songwriter Norman Bailey, Marc Campbell, Claver Campbell and Louis Putman, grew up in the Water House area of Kingston, Jamaica bonding over their shared love of Dub & Reggae. The 4 members moved to Pennsylvania in the US in the early 80’s and released one album ‘Confusion’ on the local Meadowlark label, touring throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and becoming stalwarts of the Pennsylvanian roots scene.

The band started their own Concrete label in 1988 releasing ‘Hot Rock’ complete with a Dub Version possessing a potent combination of punchy 707 drum programming, killer rolling bassline, stripped back lead guitar and a rising synth line. For the official reissue there’s an added ‘Rockapella’ version not found on the original 12” and a new full sleeve jacket designed by Bradley Pinkerton.

A 12" that has been bubbling under the radar for a while is the ridiculously catchy "Beach Boy" by Vertical Lines. The vocal side is almost Stevie Wonder-like in its delivery with some great vocals by Barry Michael Cooper who carries the groove perfectly. Works well with both Disco and 'Yacht Rock' audiences alike.

The instrumental track is a prime slice of vintage 1982 drum-programming and a very early executive production from Tuff City owner, Aaron Fuchs. Recently featured in Dam-Funks sets, "Beach Boy" has been growing in popularity over the last couple of years and will fit into creative sets like a dream. Needs to be played Loud over a great system!

One of the two new 7" from All Nations Records coming early 2022 is a rework of a legendary tune that all reggae fans know. “I Know Myself” from Ernest Wilson has been a regular play by all champion sounds from Sir Cosxone to Jah Shaka and alikes since late 70’s. Never would be the intention to do better, but All Nations Records likes to do his thing a little bit different, so Simon Nyabinghi has rebuilt the tune entirely in his studio in 2022 style. With a clever recipe of carefully picked sounds and a grooving way of playing, it has the original vibes with a bouncing twist that should suit to all original fans and beyond. All in all, a great humble tribute to a legendary artist sadly gone to zion earlier in 2021.

Al Brown was inspired to write the single ‘Proverb’ after spending hours hunched over his bible in Spanish Town as a youth. He had become known for his more commercial covers of singer Al Green material, but ‘Proverb’ was one of the few tunes that he recorded that were roots inspired and has become highly sought after.

Recorded at Channel One with Ernest Hookim engineering, who did an excellent job of squeezing out a thumping horns led tune. The inspired version on the flip has Lloyd Parks on bass and the singer Derek Lara on drums. The Seventh Extension Band was the house band of the Zodiac label. Not a tight knit band as such, but built built around singers Bunny Lara and Derek Lara. ‘Words spoke in haste will all go to waste so be cool’. True thing Al. Comes in hand stamped bag.

Jamaiel Shabaka was born in the parish of St.Thomas, Jamaica. As far as he remember, he grew up like a child in the country side by farming vegetables under the sun with his family. At the age of five of seven years old, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, California. He discovered music with his mum playing piano and that's how he started singing.

Sometimes he came back to Jamaica and there he experienced Sound System for the first time. There he met a brethren named Ras Kiddus. Jamaiel wanted to meet Sugar Minott so he asked Ras Kiddus to help him. Ras Kiddus brought him to the Youth Promorion yard and organized a meeting. Sugar Minott took time to help Jamaiel to produce his song 'I Am That I Am' at Channel 1 studio on Maxfield avenue. The melody came to him with the inspiration of Jah Rastafari.

The reissue of "Jah Lives" by Thanks & Praises, originally released in 1988, is out now on 7". This captivating song was initially unveiled as an obscure vocal-only B-side, tucked away on the rare High Gate imprint serving as a perfect example of conscious underground US Digi roots.

Recorded and mixed at Monkey Hill Studio in Queens, NY, it was the creative hub of the talented musician and producer Dennis Mann (who is featured on drums and percussion here). Although the studio ventured into diverse music genres, only a select few reggae tracks were ever recorded within its walls. We are honored to present "Jah Lives" as a testament to the rich musical legacy left by Dennis Mann.

As a side technical note it is worth mentioning that "Jah Lives" was originally recorded using a multi-track cassette recorder, also known as Portastudio. Despite some inherent difficulties of extracting audio from a 35 year old cassette and dealing with issues such as sound bleeding, we took on the challenge of restoring it to revive the true essence of the song. To release 'Jah Lives' solely as a vocal cut would have been a tremendous disservice, so we also embarked on a meticulous restoration process to present the song in all its proper glory. In addition to the never-before-heard instrumental version, the reissue will offer listeners the chance to fully embrace the complete spectrum of the song and truly appreciate its beauty.

Love Club was an obscure one off project fronted by Jay "Mixin" Dixon, a DJ with a long history at NYCs Kiss FM where he played deep House and Garage on the stations legendary master-mix show in the early 90's. The record also features a mystery, uncredited female vocalist assisted by some top shelf studio personnel manning the boards. It was released on the mighty West End Records in August 1983 and is Dixon's first foray into releasing music. "Hot Summer Nights" is a real under the radar gem and it bears all the hallmarks of a classic West End production of the time: slick, synth heavy, futuristic sounding production and sultry vocals extolling the virtues of eyes meeting across the dance-floor of a unknown discotech on a sticky summer night, a nice slice of electronic Disco bliss that even features a rapped verse from Dixon himself towards the end of the track! Flip it over to side B for the obligatory instrumental mix / dub where the spacious, stripped back groove really comes to life. Yet another gem from the vast West End catalogue re-mastered, re-pressed and re-released in conjunction with the label, featuring the original label artwork from 1983. A treat for all serious Disco / Boogie fans.

Students of late '80s digital reggae know that Edgar Whyte's Parish label is one of the finest labels of the period, issuing many singles and albums, with a unique selection of artists and a bunch of killer original rhythms. Mallory Williams (son of Jamaican pianist and band leader, Luther Williams), a celebrated musician, singer, arranger, and producer, launched his musical journey in 1976 as a keyboard player in various bands within Jamaica's vibrant tourism industry. Along his path, he performed and toured with prestigious groups like Jimmy Cliff's Oneness Band and also We The People Band, providing backing for countless Jamaican artists.

In 1985, during the reggae's digital revolution, Mallory Williams collaborated with Tony DaCosta (from Skatalites fame) and his group the Tony DaCosta Affair (tda), to craft the remarkable single "Yu Saaf." This release not only showcases DaCosta's impressive vocal range but also highlights Mallory's instrumental talent, which incorporates a pioneering proto-digital rhythm. In the early 1970s, the funk / soul band Power Of Attorney was formed at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Graterford (30 miles northwest of Philadelphia). The story of their formation is just as powerful as the music that they left behind. In late 1972, the prison’s Activities Director Theodore “Ted” Wing broke ground on a new recording studio. As part of the rehabilitative arts and music initiative, the space was built to offer a creative outlet for incarcerated individuals to express their musical talents. In November of ‘72, an audition was held throughout the prison to form a band. It has been reported that over 1,600 men auditioned for a spot in the band. Wing ultimately settled on a lineup that consisted of William Smith (lead guitar), Charles McDowell (bass), Merion Wilson (tenor saxophone), Edward J.X. Smith (guitar), and Otis Graham (drums). With a lineup of gifted musicians and a fresh new recording studio to practice and lay down tracks in, the band Power Of Attorney was officially born. In January of 1973, Power of Attorney got the chance to record at Sigma Sound Studios, the legendary space that helped birth the Philadelphia International sound as well as classic albums like David Bowie's Young Americans. Taking the routines that they had rehearsed for a reported five hours each day, the band laid down the tracks — including the reflective “Changing Man,” an original composition by McDowell. “It tells the story of a man who made a mistake, and after a while in jail, he gets his head together, and realizes it’s time to straighten it out,” the 21-year-old serving life for murder told The Philadelphia Daily News upon the single’s release. The 7-inch single was released on the Nicetown label in 1973. Sold directly from the prison activities office, 500 copies were originally made. After more practicing and recording, one year later James Brown & Polydor Records offered The Power Of Attorney’s lone full-length, 1974’s From The Inside… Between 1973 and 1975 the band played 400+ concerts outside of the prison walls. Even opening for Stevie Wonder at Lincoln University and also making a live appearance on the Mike Douglas show. Forward to 2020 – While digging through the Sigma tape archives at Drexel University, Brewerytown Beats owner Max Ochester – known for deep-dive Philly reissues by The Thompsons and Sounds Of Liberation – noticed two tapes, with only “P.O.A.” scribbled on the spines. Upon further inspection, it was discovered that these 2-inch multi-reels contained six songs, four of them previously unreleased, all from 1973. The full original studio tapes for Power Of Attorney’s “Changing Man” sessions had been found, 47 years later. Expertly mixed and remastered from the original reels, Power Of Attorney’s Changing Man (out now on Brewerytown Records) is a document of the joy and pain of a handful of men trying to make the best of an impossible situation. The bittersweet love ballad “I’m Just your Clown” is featured on the flip. The reissued single is available now on Brewerytown Records on vinyl and streaming platforms. The label will follow this up with the vinyl and streaming release of all 6 songs found on that long-lost Sigma tape, on vinyl & CD in late 2020.
