Taking its name from the 50-foot effigy burned every year by a hysterical mob during the Fiestas De Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM, Zozobra is the brainchild of Caleb Scofield (Cave In / Old Man Gloom) and, to carry on his musical legacy, the two Zozobra albums Harmonic Tremors (2007) and Bird Of Prey (2008) can now be streamed everywhere on all streaming platforms once again. Also both albums will see their respective vinyl releases, the first time they will be officially issued on vinyl for widespread distribution (previous editions were tour-only editions and the Caleb memorial version). Following on the seismic heels of Harmonic Tremors, Bird Of Prey was originally released in 2008 via Hydra Head Records respectively and features drummer Aaron Harris (Isis), who also recorded and mixed the album. Scofield’s second full-length under the Zozobra moniker is a white-hot exploder shot through with snaking melody lines and implacable riffs. From front to back, Scofield’s signature roar is tempered by his own gleaming backup chants; meanwhile, an arsenal of guitars alternately churns and shimmers in the flames of Zozobra’s effigial namesake.

When 'One-Armed Bandit' was released back in 2004, the album propelled Zornik to the top ranks of De Ultratop and De Afrekening (StuBru). The Limburg-based group had already staked their claim in the Belgian rock scene with their debut album 'The Place Where You Can Find Us' and a finalist position in Humo's Rock Rally. However, with the release of the album 'One-Armed Bandit' in 2004, the cult status of the Limburg band led by frontman Koen Buyse became an even greater success story. If it had to be chosen an unconventional project among the spanish progressive scene in the last few years, without any doubt the asturian band ZEM would be the one. Lead by the virtuoso vibraphonist Xuan Zem, together with members from LOS ILEGALES, their debut album was released in the beggining of 2008. Their music is based on a powerful rhythmic section, with the vibraphone, the bass and the drums as a central basis. Over this structure they develop compositions around jazz rock, with brass arrangements and sax solos, guitar and of course, vibraphone. When Zak Sally left his position as bassist for the minimalist rock band LOW after 12 years, he was pretty certain he was done with music, choosing instead to concentrate on his cartooning (Recidivist, Sammy The Mouse), and his small-press venture, La Mano 21. However, he remained absolutely terrified by music, and so found himself drawn back into the basement with the self-imposed rule to write/play/sing/make every sound in every song-no matter what. Omaha, Nebraska's punk rock romantics return with an award winning blend of pop-punk meets doo-wop on their brand new full length release Life Got In The Way. Friends since high school, middle aged pop-punkers The Young Hasselhoffs are reunited after a decade-long sabbatical, that followed a decade-long sabbatical, punctuated by a brief reunion. Confused? Let’s start over. Matt, Jason, and Phil started TYH in 1998, right out of high school. They very quickly earned a reputation for writing super-catchy, sugary sweet, pop punk meets doo-wop tunes and released their debut full length CD Win A Date With on the legendary Melted Records in 1998. TYH continued their historic pop punk legacy with a few more CD and 7inch releases on Insubordination and Far Out Records, made numerous comp appearances, and three US tours, reality intervened. The rock dream seemed dead. Matt, Jason and Phil decided to go their separate ways. And they did. Despite being considered largely irrelevant as an actual band 20 years ago, Phil managed to talk everyone into making a new record. The Mermaid is a monumental work representing Yon’s first output as a pioneer of a unique jazz-based Korean new age/fusion sound. The album has recently become much sought-after among listeners and collectors drawn to the ambient elements and Balearic vibes that permeate the album. At long last, after nearly 30 years, this hidden masterpiece from a visionary composer who was way ahead of his time has been reissued! Yon Seok-won was born in 1949 in Hwanghae Province, in what is now part of North Korea. After his family fled to the South during the Korean War, he grew up in Incheon. In 1969, he met Incheon-born musician Kim Myoung-kil, with whom he formed the soul band ‘Devils’. Playing mainly on the U.S. 8th Army entertainment circuit, the group also dominated music competitions and the club scene. Yon left the band when he was drafted into military service soon after the release of the Devils debut album. As soon as his service was complete, Yon formed and led the Outsiders, a rock band that mixed soul and Latin influences. The outfit’s only album was released in 1975. Yon then went on to join Shin Byoung-ha’s jazz-rock / disco unit, the Four Seasons, while also working on solo material and furthering his career as an arranger. Having built a working relationship with SRB Records at the time, he handled production duties as composer / arranger for various acts such as the folk singer Jung Tae-choon as well as soul-funk singers like Yoon Si-nae and Moon Ji-young. Ever passionate about exploring new music, in 1982 he left behind a promising career as composer / arranger in the domestic gayo scene and went to America to discover a greater world of music. He spent the next 5 years studying jazz and playing local gigs in Hawaii. Upon his return to Korea in 1986, Yon’s broadened musical scope organically found expression on numerous remarkable gayo productions, signaling the start of a new heyday for him. This is plain to see in his work on the albums by various top acts of the time, including In Soon-ee, Lee Eun-ha, Kim Wan-sun, and Kim Beom-ryong. In particular, he demonstrated an unparalleled knack for arranging New Wave-influenced disco tunes as well as ballads that incorporated elements of chamber music. Additionally, since the early 1990s to the early 2000s, Yon has been prolific as a score composer for numerous films and drama series. In 1990, Yon established a musicianship crew of his own, ‘Creation’, which became a steadfast vehicle for him to give form to his musical visions. His jazz-based fusion / new age albums, which threw a fresh new light on Yon and his work, were released during this era. Building on his close working relationship with Oasis Records at the time, in 1991 Yon released his first solo material in 10 years – ‘Mermaid’, while also working as head producer of Shin Hyo-bum’s idiosyncratic jazz-oriented gayo album ‘Jazz: The Outing (1991). Also prolific as an arranger, his career peaked when he participated in hit songs by Lee Moon-sae and Kim Gwang-seok. Ever since the 2000s, Yon has focused mainly on composing scores for drama series. Yon’s extraordinary yet woefully under-documented career saw him pursue a unique musical journey after his beginnings in a soul / rock band in the 70s, after which he infused jazz elements into gayo and realized his greater musical vision. His touch can be found everywhere from 70’s gems to the various gayo hits and score albums of the late 91’s. As such, Yon Seok-won is a mysterious musician whose works are familiar to any gayo lover / collector even while little is known about the man himself. It’s high time for a proper appreciation of Yon and his work.

Dadada ism, as with all of Jun Togawa’s projects, is another bestseller in the P-Vine catalogue and was the followup to Dial Y wo Mawase! released in 1992. On Dadada ism, the band began to experiment more with electronic production, and the underlying industrial spirit behind tracks on here could have seamlessly found their way into cyberpunk film soundtracks at the time. As an artist Jun Togawa, to this day is comparable to no one, but we can only hope that in time some may draw comparisons between her work ethic to push the limits of pop, and western artists such as Bjork and Kate Bush.

Here is a hidden gem from the 1990s, a sparkling cyber-ambient-Mandarin pop collection produced by Henry Kawahara, the master of cyber-occult music, with silky vocals from Shanghai-born vocalist Xiao Yun Wu. Originally released on CD in 1994 on Kawahara’s own HMD label, the Xiao Yun project was launched by Kawahara and his trusted colleague Keisuke Oki, who plays keyboards on the album. Kawahara handled the production, along with guitar, keyboards and programming. And of course, the crowning glory is the voice of Xiao Yun: lovely, floating, ethereal. The singer arranged the songs, which range from versions of previously released Kawahara solo pieces to Mandarin pop classics. All songs are given Kawahara’s cyber-occult sheen, which may evoke visions of the cosmopolitan Asia of near-future science fiction. Originally released in 1993 on DJ Phantasy’s Liquid Wax label, it has now been repressed in conjunction with Vinyl Fanatiks on Colored Vinyl.

This is one of Phantasy’s many aliases. ‘Get On The Floor’ is a jungle-techno stomper, created in the same studio that invented that genre. Where as ‘Welcome To The Underworld’ has very strong Liquid Aliens vibes about it.

As always with anything on Liquid Wax, these tracks are big club releases as Phantasy was testing them out at all the raves in the early 90’s. But Phantasy always has a trick up his sleeve that makes his music sound incredibly original and still fresh to this day, 31 years later!

Psych-Funk 101 introduces students to the global phenomenon of psychedelic funk music, and covers the “golden years” of the movement, from approximately 1967 until 1980. This compilation does not focus on American and British bands. Rather it focuses on the bands throughout the Global Village that were influenced by the innovation of American and British bands – that many times one upped the heroes they sought to emulate.
This compilation focuses on bands influenced by James Brown, The Meters, Sly and The Family Stone, Booker T and The MGs and The Bar Kays and unsung rhythmic forces such as drummers Bernard Purdie, Idris Muhammad, Earl Palmer, bassists such Carol Kaye and Jimmy Lewis. It focuses on bands who took that energy and combined it with the flair of psychedelic-rock musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and the ensemble known as Cream – as well as pop-rock acts taken by the experimental side of psychedelia such as The Beatles. But these bands added their own, unique cultural flourishes.
The result is mind-bending. Think about it for a second – what musical forces were greater than that of funk and psychedelic music in the late 60s and early 70s? These forces, combined by bands happy to incorporate folk music and improvisational elements from other musical forms, lead to an amazing body of work still being unearthed by researchers the world over – and still capable of inspiring new investigations into shapes of rhythm.
