Here is what 2014 felt like: The cold, rushed walk from the Montrose Avenue L to the downstairs entrance of 20 Meadow Street, an address you could never quite remember. The careful steep climb to the top of the nondescript building, where Titus Andronicus’s Patrick Stickles was waiting to take your balled-up cash and stamp the inside of your wrist. Standing beneath that jagged cardboard punk bunting, draped with tangled twinkle lights, while Joe Galarraga, frontman of Big Ups, slowly, menacingly, wound a microphone cable around his fist. Then a barbed F-sharp sprang forward from Amar Lal’s guitar, shaking the entirety of Shea Stadium to life.

For much of that time period, ten years now behind us, it would be easy to say, man, you just had to be there. You had to be there when Death By Audio closed. You had to be there when the Apple store opened on Bedford Ave. If you weren’t there when a small, specific subculture of New York City took over its abandoned lofts and grimy basements and squatted itself into community, that’s okay — it might be too clunky and myopic to explain now. Released in January 2014 to Dead Labour in the US and Tough Love Records in the UK, Eighteen Hours of Static stands even now as a triumphant representation of what Big Ups did so well over the course of their nine-year run as a band. Now, with the re-release of Big Ups’ killer debut full-length, those who didn’t get to experience all this the first time around will get a shot at living as if it’s the glory days again.

Well known to punk rock aficionados for his nearly four-decade tenure as the Circle Jerks' bassist - Zander Schloss opens a new chapter in his musical career with the release of his first solo recording, Song About Songs, from San Diego-based Blind Owl Records. The album was recorded at Los Angeles' Sargent Recorders, the Filipinotown studio owned by producer and fellow Missouri native Gus Seyffert, who also plays bass on the collection; Seyffert is a well-traveled sideman who has worked with Roger Waters, Norah Jones, Beck, and the Black Keys, among others. Jake Blanton, Seyffert's best friend in Kansas City, Mo, contributed keyboards; he has played behind Brandon Flowers of the Killers and Michelle Branch. Josh Adams, also from KC, is a highly skilled studio drummer who supported Schloss and Wheeler on their second album Other Desert Cities. The emerging singer-songwriter Bedouine guests as vocalist on the track "I Have Loved the Story of My Life." "This is my polar opposite version of punk rock. Punk rock is volume and anger and speed. Calabra are London based duo DJ Toni Rossano and musician Neil Simons.

Having hung out as teenagers in the Midlands the friends went on to pursue different musical paths in the capital. Neil has engineered, mixed and produced a wide variety of artists whilst Toni, a DJ/Producer, was part of the pirate soul explosion as Blackbeard in the noughties and currently dabbles under the Gospel guise as The Showfa. Now many moons later...

The idea for Calabra was born during fuzzy after-party hours on the pebbles of a brisk Brighton beach and is the musical yearning for adventures on warmer Balearic shores. Sunshine inspired beats and melodic guitars lead a cast of analogue synths, percussion, fender bass, oboe and voices all lovingly coloured by 70’s art rock, New Age, folk and inspired Ghanaian High Life.

Picked up by Gerd Janson the Calabra EP features four debut tracks. The leading ‘Mazzara Return ’has a midtempo Balearic-like feel with lead guitar, house-up styled beats and electronica inspired atmospherics. Followed by the sci-fi synth driven ‘Half Baked ’with melodic spanish guitar riffs and sequenced synthesizers for that old skool analogue sounding thrill! ‘Hustle ’launches with a rolling live played bass and synth line on top of the guitar chill-out like licks fused with congas, bongos and cowbell rhythm courtesy of Yam Who? percussionist Des Morgan. ‘Respiro ’the EP’s grand finale introduces vocalist and songwriter Penelope Rossano and is a folk/jazz style ballad showcasing not

2022’s 3-track EP ‘031921 5.24 5.53’, released as a limited run of dubplates, was the first testament to their open approach to writing, which takes only very basic ideas and relies on non-verbal communication to define form and pace.
Enji’s vocals are less centre-stage than on her solo endeavors, piercing through reverb plates and guitar pedals while Simon inked his signature set of wooden and metal percussions with chains of tape echoes and analog delay.
Listening to ‘Nant’ as a snapshot of Poeji’s artistry at a certain time and place can instill a sense of gratitude within the listener that something so fleeting can be captured.

Directions Out Of Town is the latest and teased as (possibly) the last LP by DIY electronic abstract pop wizard Finlay Shakespeare.

Directions Out Of Town is a fierce mix of headstrong pop bangers. Fact. There is simply no one else traversing the field that Shakespeare is exploring. It can be lonely in the desert, Simon says. Lyrically, Directions Out Of Town is dealing with loss; personally, geographically, politically, culturally - a general decay of everything.

This new record is heavily inspired by structural film where the results unravel a method where metaphor is removed from the act of sound synthesis, production and mix of the tracks. Fiercely independent and brimming with integrity this is a deeply effective journey through machines of the human experience.

The track titles are telling: ‘Away’, ‘Get’, ‘Direction’, ‘I go for a walk’, etc. This is sentiment via complex synthesis wrung through patterns of pop. One also finds ways out that only turn out to be false/untrue. “I essentially don’t know where I belong any more. This record is the precursor to that.”

What is ostensibly an electro pop record reveals a multitude of layers and depth as one man and his machines wrestle with the reality of this tangled matrix. If the charts had brains this would be album of the year.

Finlay Shakespeare is an electronic musician working in the UK. His fascination for synthesized sound was born out of his parents’ record collection, leading him to explore the electronic music of decades past throughout his teenage years. While starting to write and record his own tracks, he also began learning analogue electronics, which led him to design and build his own equipment. To date, he has released work on Editions Mego, Superpang, and his own Goto Records.

From the opening track, “Now That You Have Left It All”, we are lured into a thrilling sonic dimension with a shot of energy that sets the stage for journey ahead. “Keep On Falling” injects a dose of rock which we find throughout the record fused with the artist’s signature blend of postpunk, industrial and techno strains. Tracks like “The Outsider” and “Slithering Serenade” conjure raw, distorted rhythms and a menacing fuzz which bleeds out of the speakers while “Scales of Gold” traverses back through infectious body and wave. “Illusion In Control” is the perfect climax, a musical assault that shatters boundaries and blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.

This is the second package of remixes for the hypnotic folk music of the Ainu a cappella group Marewrew.
Ukouk Remixes Pt. 02 is dedicated to dub-infused remixes, featuring Elijah Minnelli and Peter Presto on a 7" single. Elijah Minnelli is a producer of dub music. The London-based artist specialises in a fusion of folklore and dub, which he masterfully demonstrates on his latest release Perpetual Musket on the FatCat label. His remix of Marewrew's Uekap is a deep and breathing take on the mesmerising round singing vocals, dubbed in a live take through his mixing desk. The chopped vocals are used like percussion instruments. Elijah Minnelli has also contributed a moody DJ mix to the Pingipung podcast series, sharing some of his knowledge of pre-reggae roots music from the Caribbean and South America. Pingipung founder Peter Presto remixes the same track, Uekap, with his unmistakable dubby playfulness. The vocals are merry, the groove stumbling and slow. The flute melody qualifies as a perfect stress antidote. The electronic dub trio Cloud Management added their version of Honkaya to the digital package. There is an Andi Otto remix in the bundle, Hunpe Yan Na. The song is about a whale that has stranded ashore; Otto dubs the song with Heiko Gogolin’s bass clarinet, blown organ pipes and his cello. Finally, Californian folk wizard Contact Field Orchestra adds his atmospheric, haunted version of Etukuma Kara.

If there's one musician in the last decade that you may hear in wildly diverse musical contexts it is Belgian electric bassist and sound sculptor Farida Amadou. Not only can you enjoy the unerringly skillful command she has over her instrument but also the transformative power to reinterpret and expand her material in spontaneous and unconventional ways.

Amadou is self-taught and radically aware of her idiosyncratic relationship with the bass guitar. She neither emulates the virtuosos of the electric bass, nor does she use the instrument as a pure sound generator that merely emits humming and feedback. She takes a completely independent and unique approach. This freedom enables her to create an overwhelming wall of sound, as well as simple, clear structures that are rhythmically concise yielding a wide associative space that lands somewhere between free jazz and noise.

Her work is often concentrated and circular where motifs are established and developed outward. It is an organic sound in the literal sense of the word, constantly in motion, yet resting in itself. The three solo pieces she has recorded for Week-End Records emphasize her impressive ability to ignite ecstasy from tranquility, to fan out a whole range of moods from a few potent ideas.

These attributes make her a musician who enriches every group she plays in, because she is present with her assured and crystallized sound but refrains from being domineering. However, her strengths are even more apparent when she plays solo: the contrasts between the dark, heavy clouds of sound and the rhythmic passages, and the transitions between movements which always sound "logical" yet surprising.

Her new solo album, "When It Rains It Pours" presents Amadou as an inspired improviser who follows her musical intuition and acumen to create a truly unique soundworld. Rarely has improvised music sounded so succinct and compelling.

Sunny Crypt is incredibly happy to announce its seventh release: a retrospective compilation of six previously CD-only tracks by Nightmare Lodge, a name that might ring the bell to many enthusiasts of Italian experimental music. It Passed Like A Dream is a selection of some of our favourite tracks they released between 1994 and 2000, aiming to spotlight a small glimpse of the amazing body of music they did throughout the years. Nightmare Lodge is a musical project by Minus Habens Records / Disturbance founder Ivan Iusco alongside vocalist B. Mazzilli and bass player Gianni Mantelli, when the Bari based trio decided to decided to embark on a path in search of their own dreamlike musical dimension tied to introspective explorations. Over the years, the group's lineup evolved, eventually solidifying as a duo comprising Iusco and Russolo. With their first release dated 1987 and staying active till the early 2000s, it is quite challenging to put the Nightmare Lodge discography in a precise musical box. Their first outings flirted with post-industrial music and a more stripped down sound palette marked by a DIY approach to composition, while in later years leaning towards a more horroresque / cinematic feeling and following the development of new technologies but always charactering their output with a ritualistic, trance inducing and mystical approach, whatever if it’s ambient, downtempo, techno not techno, or a whole lotta else...

Benny Howell (aka DJ Subaru) is a UK based producer, DJ and overall promoter of good times who's undoubtedly propelling a new generation of music appreciation with an honourable respect for the earlier beginnings of club culture. Benny Howell might also be the pioneer of a new post-Brexit Eurodance genre, with "Surrender", a catchy Pop oriented production with strong influences from Italodisco and HiNRG, written and produced entirely from scratch with best friend Bella Quirin who co-wrote the lyrics after a break up with her ex. Innocent and charming lyrics over 120's BPM drum machine and a simple melody that you'll be humming in the back of your mind for days to come. Equipped with a Yamaha Tx81z, a few guitar pedals and a makeshift bedroom studio, "Surrender" is the product of a dear friendship between the two music lovers, as per Benny's recount: "Bella came and sung on the track in my bedroom during one of the gaps between Covid lockdowns after I asked her at the pub if she knew any singers and said me of course, and we went from just friends to best friends." The remix on the B-side by Castro takes a darker turn into what almost sounds like a Techno version with heavy dubbed out effects taking the "Surrender" theme through an unhinged Ketamine flanger vortex. Next up on North London’s Feral Child label, comes an absolute cracker. A longterm favourite @ label HQ, the great Dewey Mahood’s Plankton WAT project releases a new record, “Corridors” as a super limited, hand numbered, coloured wax LP with Feral Child this July. Plankton Wat began as a home studio recording project by Portland, OR musician Dewey Mahood in the early 2000's. The playful band name was inspired by Popol Vuh; and combines the names of Krautrock producer Conny Plank and bassist Mike Watt. Mahood made several low key albums on various formats for obscure underground labels, and played occasional solo guitar gigs around the West Coast. Due to the popularity of his experimental psych rock band Eternal Tapestry, Plankton Wat signed to legendary Chicago label Thrill Jockey in 2011. The album “Spirits” came out the following year, and this began the ongoing musical partnership with fellow Portland musician Dustin Dybvig aka Brass Clouds. Mahood and Dybvig also did the funk dub band Edibles, the short lived psych punk band Spectrum Control, and most recently were the rhythm section for Ripley Johnson's Rose City Band. It was while on tour in the UK with RCB that Mahood started revisiting early 1980s post punk such as New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Cocteau Twins, a sound and attitude that became the foundation for the new album “Corridors”. Mahood played guitar and bass, and added a touch of synth and drum machine, and Dybvig played several beautiful solos using synth and piano. The songs are a continuation of ideas first heard on “Future Times” (Thrill Jockey, 2021), but are further refined into concise, compact musical statements reflecting on climate change (ice storms, record high temps, the changing coastline, the impact on trees, the importance of water, etc). Another wonderful addition to Dewey | PWs’ already formidable canon of work, this one won’t hang around long. To be upfront, the label is retreating more and more into the world of self distro’d small runs with UK stores seemingly only now bothered by variations on Taylor Swift records. God bless her….!

The inspiration for 'Album l' and 'Album Il' began with a performance by Japanese musician Eiko Ishibashi at Cologne's Week-End Fest in 2019. For this appearance the renowned experimental musician and composer of the Oscar-winning film „Drive My Car" was joined on drums by Tatsuhisa Yamamoto and Joe Talia; both integral members of the top-level improvisational/ experimental scene in Tokyo. While in town for the festival, Ishibashi met up with the members of the Cologne-Berlin based group Von Spar who featured Ishibashi on their then new album "Under Pressure".

"The music of New York trio Weak Signal (Mike Bones, guitar and voice; Sasha Vine, electric bass, violin, and voice; Tran, drums and voice) is a masterclass in simplicity and economy but these aspects aren’t present for their own didactic sake. Rather, their art is world-building in the most essential of ways, subtly spinning out in an enveloping, rich haze from a clear, architectural core. There are sections of knife-like collective squall and dialogic drift that glance at improvised music; while not strictly pop, the tunes are incredibly catchy with wry, keenly memorable lyrics that easily stick in one’s craw. With associations including Endless Boogie, Sian Alice Group, and Soldiers of Fortune, Weak Signal formed in 2017. Tokyo visionist Soshi Takeda’s second album took shape across eight months of the winter and spring, inspired by an iconic mid-80’s photography book of Chinese landscapes. Scenes of lantern-lit fishing boats on misty mountain lakes seeded a mood of hidden paradise, ancient waterways snaking secret paths into the past.

Recorded at his home studio using exclusively hardware synths and samplers from the 1990’s, the six songs of Floating Mountains (plus digital-only bonus cut, “Deep Breath,” from the recent 2nd Life Silk compilation) evoke shrouded cinematic vistas of liquid skies and shining lakes, like some Li River twist on Balearic half-light house. Shades of cosmic drift and crystalline electronica ebb and flow within the nocturnal pulse, pagodas and pearls reflecting the waning moon: “I hope you can feel the cool and exotic atmosphere.”

"Jeff Goldblum takes a deep breath and initiates the teleportation sequence, unaware that lurking in the corner of the telepod are three greasy eighth grade boys quoting their favorite lines from Kids In The Hall sketches. The sequence initiates; a crack of static; a horrible flash of white hot light. Dramatically backlit and shrouded in fog, what emerges from the adjacent telepod is not so much man-child as teenage lobotomy. The camera jumps to a tight shot on the receding hairlines of three dumb assholes: “Look out world…” they whisper with an off-putting wink into the camera. “I’m eatin’ Arby’s.”

This is the Citric Dummies and that is a reference to their song lyrics! Yes, you do not have to ask: this shit is dumb. Lyrics like “I'm driving a piece of shit because I am a piece of shit” dumb. I hear fear in their voices: this is both a reference to Lee Ving’s phlegm and the fact this band is naked and lost in a parking garage, “A traffic cone used for modesty (It’s not a giant orange dick, you see)”. But unlike Fear, this band does not hate you, for they are too busy hating themselves. “Fuck you!” you yell at them, and they know why.

When you see these Citric Dummies (and oh, you simply must!), you will notice their jackets—matching in satin, unique in color. A bassist in green satin, like a lime, and bald (not unlike a lime…). Guitarist? In lemon yellow; he has a regular amount of hair. And that drummer on the drums, the one with the most hair of all? Orange! What we have here is a band who visually tastes like an orange 7Up if such a dumb thing were a thing.

And this band plays: fast! Fuck! Live, it’s fast-as-fuck-oh-fuck-this-is-fast. Dean Dirg is there playing fast, and The Hives, because we love the Hives and know their roots are of the same raw Swedish garage milieu as the Hellacopters and Henry Fiat's Open Sore. “It’s too rock ‘n roll for hardcore, too hardcore for rock ‘n roll,” you may say (because you yourself may be dumb). Is this what is called…punk? Yes! That’s it! Maybe this is punk, you dumbass.

Bombay Studios was an 8-track studio located in the sleepy backwoods village of Smyrna, Georgia which briefly operated from 1981 to 1983. During that time, Joe Perry, the proprietor of Bombay was a routine live sound engineer at venues sprinkled across Atlanta including the Agora Ballroom and 688. Most famously, he holds the distinction of recording the first studio session ever by R.E.M. (And no, that session has never been released.) As was often the case, other local bands would record there including Love Tractor, Keith and the Satellites (soon to be called The Georgia Satellites), DDT and Oh-OK. Amongst the littany of bands that’d come in for a day or two and commit their material to tape was the upstart Athens five-piece Limbo District. While looking through third guitarist Kelly Crow’s archive, I stumbled across an unmarked cassette tape of a three song session. Jump ahead to famed collector Lo Yo Yo’s Todd Ploharski who had the same session but on the J-card was written “Bombay.” And just like that, the band’s second recording session from the spring of 1982 had been unearthed. This session is, indeed, the band’s second line-up with Art In The Dark’s Tim Lacy on guitar who strengthened the band’s songwriting and performances. The three songs recorded “Fetish This,” “Daydreaming,” and “Two Of Screams” have more in common with the art damaged New York No Wave scene than any oblique pop, rock or jangle in the Classic City at the time. Not coincidentally, Limbo bassist Davey Stevenson’s big brother Gordon was the bassist in Teenage Jesus and the Jerks who would consistently send his kid brother missives from the front line of New York’s scuzzy vanguard.

Spotlessly restored by Jason NeSmith, ‘Bombay’ celebrates that day in Joe Perry’s studio 42 years ago. “Daydreaming” is included as a digital bonus as it wouldn’t fit on the record. All artwork was culled from the voluminous Limbo District archive. The front is original art by vocalist Craig Woodall while the back is by guitarist Kelly Crow who cribbed from German artist George Grosz for the main visual while Crow scribbled marker around it. Each copy of the record has a uniquely colored scheme done by various friends of Chunklet including musicians from Honey Radar, Lifeguard, Vangas and other esteemed degenerates. The insert features a never before photo of the band in front of an S&M hangout called the Hell Hole off the main strip at Coney Island taken by Ellen McGrail in the spring of 1982. Also included are handwritten lyrics by Craig Woodall.

“Bombay” is the Limbo District’s fifth vinyl release in less than a year with more coming out very soon including the band’s famed Drive-In session with Mitch Easter. Stay tuned into this channel for continued Limbo chaos.

Like the towering mounds of toxic waste from which it gets its namesake, the music of Oklahoma City noise rock quartet Chat Pile is a suffocating, grotesque embodiment of the existential anguish that has defined the 21st Century. It figures that a band with this abrasive, unrelenting, and outlandish of a sound has stuck as strong of a chord as it has. Dread has replaced the American dream, and Chat Pile’s music is a poignant reminder of that shift—a portrait of an American rock band molded by a society defined by its cold and cruel power systems.

Though very much on-brand with Chat Pile’s signature flavor of cacophonous, sludgy noise rock, the band’s shift to a global thematic focus on Cool World not only compliments the broader experimentations it employs with their songwriting but also how they dissect the album’s core theme of violence. Melded into the band’s twisted foundational sound are traces of other eclectic genre stylings, with examples of gazy, goth-tinged dirges to abrasive yet anthemic alt/indie-esque hooks and off-kilter metal grooves only scratching the surface of what can be heard in the album’s ten tracks.

Besides stylistically stretching the boundaries of the Chat Pile sound, Cool World is also the band’s first record to have someone else handle mixing duties, with Ben Greenberg (Uniform) capturing and further amplifying the quartet’s unmistakably outsider and folk-art edge.

While Chat Pile’s debut album was plenty disturbing with its B-movie-inspired interpretation of a “real American horror story”, what the band depicts on Cool World is unsettling not just from its visceral noise rock onslaught, but from depicting how all sorts of atrocities are pretty much standard parts of modern existence. In film terms, think something like a Criterion arthouse film by way of schlocky grindhouse splatterfest: undeniably gratuitous and thrilling in the moment but leaving a looming dread in the back of one’s mind for how close the horrors depicted mirror reality.

The Frenchmen formed as a Talulah Gosh cover band in 2002 by Amy Paris, Leon Levy and Niki Ortiz in the cultural nexus that is Sacramento, California. Needing a drummer with real ‘star power’ they ‘discovered’ the man of many bands (and hair styles)–Charles Albright. They practiced, they wrote songs, they played barbeques, played live on local college radio and anywhere people tolerated their plethora of RAT pedals and out-of-pocket French puns (i.e., not many places.) Playing led to recording, recording led to a record. Their first official release was the 7” EP Powdered Blue released by then San Francisco indie label Shelflife Records in 2003. This EP and their incessant gigging (giggling?) got them noticed by Clairecords who offered to release a whole album, to which the Frenchmen emphatically said “Oui!” After several recording sessions (and one ruined party), their album was complete! Sorry We Ruined Your Party is 12 lo-fi indie pop songs that clock in at a brisk 26 minutes. The split female/male vocals sound like a mash-up of Heavenly (Hey Amelia!), and Beat Happening–inexplicably played at a Minor Threat tempo. This clash of seeming opposites (hard/fast/soft/chill) would be a theme for the Frenchmen that is mildly reminiscent of Henry’s Dress. They even let the drummer sing a song! Sorry We Ruined Your Party was recorded in 2004 in Northern California by Chris Woodhouse (Karate Party), Wyatt Cusick (Aislers Set, Track Star), Jeff Melendez and Doug Godsey and mastered by Patrick Haight. The album was originally released as a compact disc on Clairecords and is available for the first time on vinyl LP–remastered for 2024!

Sub Basics returns to Modern Hypnosis with Rhino EP. This time bringing four dub, techno and house inspired tracks for the collectors and selectors.

Sub Basics opens with Roll Up, a delicate broken beat track, where under the microscope, heavy traces of cosmic dub-dust have been detected throughout. Roll Up guides you along at 115bpm as it glistens in the stars.

The title track, Rhino is an addictive, somewhat cheeky, progressive dub techno tune, with each dub-stab as it enters the fold offering the listener a different skank to groove on. This track will connect dancefloors around the world for many years to come.

Together on the flip, Haze and Fluctuate are perfectly executed pieces of dub techno hypnotism, with Fluctuate leaning into those house music elements we all cherish and love. Sub Basics does it again!
