Ashley Shadow winks at darkness, but she won't lead you towards it. It's easy to fall under the spell of Ashley's haunting voice. The Vancouver, B.C. based songwriter forged her own identity as a songwriter with 2016's eponymous self-titled debut. Her sophomore effort, Only the End, maintains the moody introspection that is ingrained in Pacific Northwest life, but now comes armed with a palpable hope complementing her signature melancholy. Ashley explains, "I wanted to make a more upbeat album, something you could play with some friends over. Some of the songs I wrote were initially bummers, but when we went to record them, we lightened them up." Balancing a couple of jobs and navigating life and love in increasingly unstable times, the album was written over two years by Ashley at her apartment. Her confident vibrato above lightly, distorted guitars mirrors the album's theme of resilience, if not triumph, over adversity. There is comfort in these warm songs that endorse the realism of contented acceptance, rather than the naïve search for non-existent utopias. While the songs were conceived in contemplative solitude, Ashley invited some very capable collaborators for their journey into the studio. Ashley's first album saw her take center stage after more than a decade of gracing friends' projects in a supporting role. The move to the front was a cautious one. "First record was, can I do a solo album? This time, I know what I'm doing. It's way more clear." "Don't Slow Me Down" reunites Ashley with Bonnie "Prince" Billy for the first time on record when she sang vocals on Bonnie's Lie Down In Light album in 2018. Edena Gardens first ever concert captured live. Until now, Edena Gardens has embraced the zoned-out quality of more or less introspective tracks. While studio albums are based on improvisations honed into tracks that fit together on an album, live Edena Gardens is another beast altogether. There's a rawness to the tracks, without ever getting decidedly heavy - a quality which shows why the trio's main acts Causa Sui & Papir have been redefining the European psychedelic underground for over a decade. The A-side exposes re-renderings of 1 track from each of the band's studio albums. The live versions both have a harder edge and a unique spontaneous live energy. It displays that Edena Gardens are not all about musical meditation, but that they also know how to rock. But it's on the B-side where we get into the deep end. Here, we're getting the full uninhibited version of Edena Gardens. A free-flowing yet exact 17-minute track, which starts out in a funky stoner jazz vibe, which somehow crescendos into an extended free-jazz-passage, finally culminating in an ending that's as much psychedelic krautrock as it is 90's rockism, winding itself down into its own doom. It makes sense that a band that feeds on impulses would release their very first show. Recorded at the Jaiyede Jazz festival 2022, Oct. 22nd at theatre Momentum in Odense, Denmark.

Or perhaps the trio's level of experience and joy of playing simply connects whatever direction they pursue - Nicklas Sorensen of Papir's glistering guitar lines, backed up by Martin Rude's rumbling Baritone guitar strums or solid basslines. It's an album that showcases not only the spontaneous paths taken, but also the vast well of ideas or sounds only implied or briefly touched upon, creating an aggregation of sounds just out of reach. Everyday Is The Song is Joni Void's third album for Constellation and a deeper plunge into emotive audio montage; the Montréal-based French-British producer calls it "Tape Vortex / Musique Verité / Memory Collage". The album's raw material relies centrally on a Walkman bought at local record shop Death Of Vinyl in spring 2020 and lost at a Backxwash show two years later, but not before hours of audio snippets were captured and archived. Everyday Is The Song is an evocative sample-based sonic diary brimming with warmth, transience and hyper-specificity where Void explores a more abstract and interstitial terrain of drifting miniatures. It remains very much a collection of songs, butrelative to the more assertive and intensive tracks channeling explorations of traumatic interiority on their previous pair of acclaimed LPs, Void's new album flows with intentional lightness and a more incidental atmosphere. Songs are constructed from audio recordings made all over and often while literally on the move: walking, cycling and skateboarding around the city; in bus and train stations; from car windows. The album's overt musical material was recorded, often spontaneously and informally, in all sorts of jam spaces, living rooms and at local live shows. Perambulation is a central theme and constituent fabric of Everyday Is The Song, carrying with it a colloquial spirit of gentle, intrinsic sentimentality. The self-proclaimed "love, soul, agency, and whimsy" virtues of Ruby Yacht (R.A.P. Ferreira, Pink Navel, et al) have also been a lodestar for Void in this respect. The album's sonic travelogue through local audio geography and community conveys a sort of urban pastoralism and charming softness. Before becoming an international musical phenomenon, raï was first and foremost the expression of a social behaviour, of a way of being. It bothers, excites, seduces, but leaves no one indifferent! Delving into the deepest recesses of raï, this compilation serves as a tribute to its roaring years, but also as a rejuvenation of the genre in its sulphurous, subterranean version. It seemed like a good idea to dig into nearly untraceable cassettes, thus confirming it's in the oldest of Oranese pots that the very best of raï is to be found. Just 50 years ago, no one would have believed even a bit in a genre seemingly bound to forever turn round and round in its native Oran, laying low in one of its many coastal road clubs. In these underground venues, singers - backed up by a minimalist orchestration for lack of space - would move their audience to laughs and tears, sobbing in a beer or chuckling down (dry) whisky. Either way, the public would unfailingly be moved by their defying tunes, sounding like a challenge to the established, self-righteous order of things - complete with trumpets, electric guitars, accordions and an array of percussions. Through the pre and post-independence years, from 1950 to 1970, raï urbanised itself, with a generation growing up between asphalt and concrete to the sound of traditional flute, but also and mostly listening to twist, French variété and rock music. Their names were Boutaïba S'ghir, Messaoud Bellemou, Groupe El Azhar, Younès Benfissa or Zergui, and they passed on their collection of songs to the incoming "Chebs" -breathing a second youth into them. Oran, the capital of West-Algeria, will be at the heart of this rejuvenation. Raï's success was overwhelming, so much so that in 1985 - when it appeared at the Youth Festival in Alger and when Oran held its first raï festival - the Algerian authorities hastened to nationalise the genre, all the while calling for its "normalisation" (that is, the "purification" of its lyrics), and to declare it "an integral part...

In 1992, under the guise of the Cat & Bells Club, eighteen-year-old Cheriton residents Graham Lambkin and Darren Harris self-released three tapes. two yellow cassettes and one pink. documenting their earliest musical efforts at S.H.P. studios (Lambkin's bedroom in his parents' house). The lowest of all lo-fi recordings, these tracks were laid down live, directly into a boombox with no overdubs. Relieved of their academic expectations and plunged into the workforce, the duo aspired to enter the annals of rock history, making their own primitive teenage overtures to Marc Bolan, the Incredible String Band, Whitehouse, and the Godz. Lyrically and spiritually the Cat & Bells Club had much to do with Bolan's early Tyrannosaurus Rex project, but with a hyperlocalized Folkestonian twist that nonetheless maintained his penchant for chevaline. While much of the Club's repertoire comprised freeform instrumental try-outs. untuned charity shop guitars and coffee cup drum kits. a number of songs featured Lambkin's original lyrics, read by both members of the band, dramatizing the comings and goings of anthropomorphic animals and musing abstractly on the minutiae of daily life in Cheriton (their native C-Town). Taking their moniker from a mishearing of the jester's bauble, cap and bells' a line from Incredible String Band's "The Iron Stone", the duo operated for a brief year under the increasingly esoteric influence of the Fisheye mail-order and then fledgling Forced Exposure fanzine, and from the airwaves via Radio 1's John Peel show. This collection was compiled by Lambkin in the early aughts for an unrealized release on his now defunct Kye label, but barring a few tracks on a retrospective 7" issued by Siltbreeze in 2010, hardly any of these recordings have been heard beyond a handful of hangers-on, inner-circle drinking allies, and the most devoted of fans. The Cat & Bells Club set the stage for what was to soon follow, when the group changed its name to the Shadow Ring. the rest is history.

"On Synthetic: Season 2, Halifax pop artist and composer Rich Aucoin continues his journey through the history of synthesizers. The second entry in his quadruple LP series once again features an armada of the world’s most rare, historic, and highly sought after electronic instruments. Gaining access to the collections of Calgary’s National Music Centre and LA’s Vintage Synthesizer Museum, Aucoin ran amok on machines to create four albums of thrilling, transporting instrumental music.

Each song on Synthetic: Season 2 conjures a world of its own, combining Aucoin’s melodic sensibilities with textural, genre-agnostic experimentation. The album swerves into action with the wiggling synths and thunderous drum breaks of “Wav” – recorded on the Hammond Novachord from 1939 and considered the very first analog, fully polyphonic synthesizer – stacking hooks like a cinematic training montage as it climbs toward the first of many transcendent conclusions. “Shift” changes course into eerie, frostbitten industrial territory with rubbery beats that bounce like pogo sticks, switching tempos unexpectedly and dissolving into skittering arrays of sound.

The squelching groove of “Pure” brings a touch of ’90s French House, like Daft Punk jet-setting around the world. Six minutes pass in a flash during this playful brain-dance. “Space” is a thumping banger built upon chiming, subaquatic beats that slice through thick drones and filter disco drops. Its passages of extraterrestrial techno tranquility will make you feel like an astronaut floating in the inky void, making shapes in zero gravity.

“Dancing Around Fire” is the new album by LA-based drummer and composer Tommaso Cappellato in partnership with Pavimento Fertile, the Italian break dance collective founded by Paolo “Frigo” Montesi. Inspired by the energy of dance and improvisation, this album serves up a dynamic fusion of experimental soul and timeless grooves that command the body to move.This unique collaboration between dancer and musician was born out of Cappellato’s live performance at the Pavimento Fertile dance jam in 2021. Seeing how Cappellato’s rhythms brought out new layers in the dancers’ movements inspired Montesi to commission an album of original music that celebrates the culture of drum breaks and sampling which fuel freestyle dance.The album’s seven tracks, composed by Cappellato in as many days, take the listener straight to the dance floor. Cappellato weaves the soulful vocals of Lalin St. Juste (on “Made of Golden Light”) and Cameron Kinghorn (on “Heart to Mend”) alongside percussive electronic tracks (like “Battle Moves”) that emphasize the importance of the drum in unleashing the power of human expression.

First up on side A we have that man again Stefano De Santis with Broken Fusion, a typically wonderful track pushing all the right buttons, a much darker affair than his previous three tracks for us. Following on from there we have Melchior Sultana who rounds off side A in style, where Malta meets Detroit, a peak time track for the dancefloor. This is Melchiors third appearance on one of our Best Of Various compilations and all three are superb pieces of music. Onto side AA and Jose Rico with two tracks both superb deep journies into Detroit musical territory. Jose is joined on both by Ruben Valero, both Silence Sentences and Minimalism are must have tracks for anyone who is a fan and follows Jose’s music. Finally Caruso serve up some Latin inspired music and beats for a heavy workout.

As a rising house name from Croatia, Laseech signs this harmonic and creamy house release iced with stellar vocals by Desney Bailey and backed up by two of the house heavyweights – Dego and Patrice Scott. A1 The title track “Hey Love” is packed with effortless deepness in and out topped with smooth Bailey’s vocals dancing elegantly over chords and strings. Dazzling tuneage that resembles airy summer jam at your favourite beach spot. A2 Dego is a man with a thousand sounds. And all of them are rich and impressive. His disco-funk spin on “Hey Love” is ploughed with heavy synths and sharp drums that culminate with a lush keyboard frenzy in the end. B1 Patrice Scott’s ability to infuse introspective soul into machine sound is second to none. “Hey Love” goes through melodic morphosis which Patrice delivers so smoothly and tinges it with floor-oriented moves. B2 Bailey’s vocals are the soul carrier of this release and it shows pretty much on “You See”. Hazy and melancholic, the track slowly burns under her looped vocals. Stripped, heart-aching and beautifully dimmed.

Uku Kuut & We Are, recorded with his high school band during his time in Sweden. Includes the recordings "Funky" and "What's Happening Today". Special thanks to the late Maryn Coote for unearthing all these gems from Uku's cassette tape archive! This is an alternate pressing than the single-sided PPU release of "Funky". There was an issue originally with the B Side which was scraped, but all has been fixed and "What's Happening Today" is available as the B Side in all it's glory!
