Wunderblock Records is a key cog in the techno machine, churning out a number of upper echelon underground techno releases. Now they are looking to take things further. In a partnership with Berlin-based Ready Made Distribution, they would like to present their new vinyl sublabel Folgsamkeitfaktor (an „obedience factor“ or „willingness to follow“). The new imprint will be focused on heavy industrial and EBM-influenced technopunk sound. Wunderblock Records are known for pushing the boundaries of modern techno and looking for that experimental sound that will be permanently ingrained in the listener‘s memory. The Wunderblock was Dr. Freud’s concept of how the mind records memories, and the Russian label‘s bosses (Michael Teplov and Vladimir Kochenov) have been known for creative ways of staying in the public‘s mind with showcases in Moscow, Berlin, Nantes, and St. Petersburg. The masterminds are developing this concept further by looking beyond the present and looking to deliver a post-techno sound, raw, mechanical, tinged with EBM and post-punk flair; all the while building an air of familiarity even if what lies ahead is the unknown. The initial release is a 7-inch record by new Berlin-based anonymous post-industrial music project, Red Nailmaker. The namesake is actually derived from St.Petersburg‘s steel-rolling factory, a monument of constructivism built in the 1930s. The music of the project is close to constructivists‘ vision of art – it‘s abstract, mechanistic and raw in its form. The synonymousness with this art form is uncanny: the methodical and structured manufacturing of techno is masked in the true beauty and emotion of the genre. Stylistically it‘s a boiling brew of techno, industrial, rhythmic noise and dub, a very apt introductory release for the newly birthed sublabel. Written & produced by Red Nailmaker. This project also sees a new design concept for the imprint from London’s David Surman’s painting installation project ‘Paintings For The Cat Dimension’ which ‘’explores the motif of the cat as emblematic of internet aesthetics, a place where all painting styles and modes now exist non-hierarchically as pure information.’’

In a healthy way, “Pretentiously Unpretentious” leaves a lot of that stuff behind (fancy promo text LOL) and instead offers a package that has MUSIC written all over it. There’s not a single track on this record that takes itself too seriously, you’ll always find quirky percussions and weird synth blobs somewhere. For us here at the rtct.records headquarters it’s all about the attitude someone makes music with. And, I mean, would you look at that picture on the record? It’s friggin’ adorable! Jesus Christ! The Stools! This is the kind of mangled barking terrifyingly manic garage that the Midwest pumps out better and more consistently than anybody and the Stools seem to be challenging every one of us to a frenetic fistfight for top spot. With 4 songs averaging 2 minutes, the When I Left EP feels like a whirlwind experience from its opening distortion to final feedback.

The title track When I Left is a garage punk banger a la Gun Club meets the Oblivians that tremors and nearly buckles under its own weight before it ends. American Convertible Stools chugs almost entirely on the same infectious blues riff, which could be repetitive with another group at the helm, but here is just incredibly fun and vital. The B-side? You've got the desperate and evil blown-out blues of Black Fly Stew butted up with the gone-before-it-was-here urgency wrapped up in a Bo Shitley beat of Don't Need Nothing.

Give this a spin and you won't need to care about what anyone has to say about anything anymore.

A number of albums on the Saravah label, by artists such as Steve Lacy, Areski, Maurice Lemaître, Philippe Maté, Jean-Charles Capon, Michel Roques or the Cohelmec Ensemble, are considered amongst the most important of the 1960-1970s, including, for example Comme à la radio by Brigitte Fontaine with the Art Ensemble of Chicago in Paris, 1969. It is unfortunately less well-known that the label produced a single at the same time also featuring the Art Ensemble of Chicago who this time backed the poetry of the little-remembered Alfred Panou.

Seen in the 1967 film Week-end by Jean-Luc Godard where he played the role of a black garbage collector, Alfred Panou who is of mixed Benin-Togolese origin, already had a career as an actor in political theatre when, pushed by producer Pierre Barouh, he recorded two of his texts concerning Black Power. At the time of the recording the explosive first album by the Last Poets had not yet been made, nor that of their west coast counterparts the Watts Prophets which would only appear in 1971. This explains why, in 1969, even if the Black Dada Nihilismus by Amiri Baraka published four years earlier was incontestably the reference point of all the above, the combative prose of Alfred Panou had a real impact. This is heightened by the fact that it is also one of the first, in its own way, to question the notion of black identity. In order to do so the brilliant idea was to have the rowdy poly-instrumental jungle fantasy of the Art Ensemble of Chicago as a musical counterpoint!

Little-recognised, probably because the texts are in French, Je suis un sauvage / Le Moral nécessaire deserves to be more than just a sought-after rare groove. Even today the record should not be neglected as it is a seminal and skilfully militant recording, which even had moments of humour. Though brief (barely ten minutes in total), it deserves to be considered as a key moment in Great Black Music in the same way as Seize The Time by Elaine Brown, Nation Time by Joe McPhee, There's A Riot Goin' On by Sly & The Family Stone or Attica Blues by Archie Shepp. No less than that.

The story of Bella Boo is not one of overnight success, though of course it might appear as such, if you haven’t been somewhat embedded in the wonderful and weird world of Swedish club culture over the last 12 years or so, in which case you will know her as one of the most eclectic, informed and hardworking DJs on the scene. It wasn’t until last year’s Studio Barnhus debut, the Fire EP, that the world finally started talking about Bella’s extraordinary production skills – the record’s fuzzy r&b harmonics and snappy analog drums prompted Pitchfork to declare it “the flat-out dreamiest thing to come from the label yet”. This was followed quickly by boyboy, a universally beloved track on last year’s Studio Barnhus Volym 1 compilation, in which she “[drizzled] bluesy sweet nothings over elliptical scrapes and squelches, suggesting Matthew Herbert remixing St Germain” (Pitchfork again). Supervillain is Bella’s first solo release of 2019, a perfect three-track thing that sees the currently London-based artist continue to expertly straddle the fence between enigmatic dreamlands and groove-locked dance floors. Mark is releasing a new EP called Integriert Euch Nicht. It features two tracks taken from his Berghain debut and a freshly-composed drum & bass missile. “Fucking Sick Of Myself Since Day One (Hot Desk Mix)” and “Hats Off To Herr. F” were first performed at Mark’s 2018 Berghain live set during Ostgut Ton Nacht. The former is a breakcore-adjacent call to arms for the self-loathing, the latter an antarctic shiver of predator- mode IDM-illektro. “Integriert Euch Nicht (Commercial Jump Up Mix)” features singing from Blackest Ever Black alum Silvia Kastel. Mark wrote the vocal parts with sine waves before Kastel recorded each tone individually, creating microtonal clusters in the vein of Luigi Nono. The sax-like sounds are Wilted Woman playing the aerophone, an electronic woodwind instrument. Otherwise, it's Mark's most deliberately straight ahead drum & bass track to date, trading the beat science of former releases for a stubbornly boneheaded approach in line with the title's message. Integriert Euch Nicht is something of a spiritual successor to last year’s tech/gentrification/real- estate-investment themed Integrier Dich Du Yuppie and a ruffer, more floor-focussed elaboration of the techniques tested on his unterton debut The Least Likely Event Will Occur In The Long Run. Under his Klon Dump alias, Mark has also previously released a psych-mnml double EP called Klon Dump Vs. The Open Air on A Colourful Storm and Two Rooms, a tape of sound art improv and knackered pop-strumentals on Bristol-based imprint NoCorner. When not playing solo, Mark also accompanies Blackest Ever Black’s Carla dal Forno on live electronics.

Pingipung and Future Nuggets present Cosima, a Bucharest based artist, with two wonderfully poignant songs. Cosima Opârtan is widely known as one half of "Raze de Soare" (Future Nuggets). As a solo artist, she files her music under the genre widow pop - melancholically reaching out to the past and the future in one gesture. She sings like someone addressing a beloved but faraway audience, or a trusted, distant relative who can only be seen through someone else's description. Cosima has a background as an architect which she shifted to designing sonic treatments for various spaces such as sound studios. She is also a founding member of the Queer Night, a series of itinerant parties engaging the local LGBTQ+ community and part of Corp., a Bucharest based platform dedicated to supporting and promoting female & female identified musical talent. "Ploaia" has been co-composed and produced by Ion Dumitrescu, known to all Pingipung afficionados for his 7inch as Ion Din Dorobanti (Pingipung 056) who also runs the never failing Future Nuggets label. On the flip side, the two team up with Horațiu Șerbănescu, an artist from the Future Nuggets roster releasing music as "Plevna".

"So the bartender probably took 1 ounce each of white, golden and dark rum, apricot brandy, pineapple and papaya juice, an optional jiggle of gin, added a dash of grenadine and put it all in a shaker. Poured the mix into a Tiki-style glass and then added ½ an ounce of 151-proof rum for good measure. No ice. Garnished with even more fruit and prepared his customer to “feel so far away”.

Recorded in around 1949 by Bernie Besman for his Detroit-based Sensation label, this ode to the high-powered cocktail by the Four Shades Of Rhythm lay undisturbed in the vault until recently unearthed and given an airing on Cerys Matthews’ BBC Radio 6 show.

There was an immediate demand to make it available to the public at large and so the Ace team sprang into action and here it is in a part one and a part two, the first Sensation release since 1950."

Deep Club rounds out five years with its fifth addition to the label arm, a split 12-inch EP of raw, unbridled techno. Trespass / Cop Watch reaches outside of Deep Club’s inner circle, enlisting the talents of Grey People, one of the crew’s favorite American techno producers. After posting key releases for Proper Trax, CGI, and Public System Recordings, Grey People released 12-inches for Valcrond Video and Nerang Recordings, as well as a new album with fledgling French label 99cts Rcrds, all while commanding Nashville’s techno underground and helping run the budding TRAM Planet label and party crew. Adding to the fun, Occidental crawls back out of the shadows to contribute two brain-melting tracks to this split twelve.
Occidental starts it off with two not-so-similar versions of “Trespass”. “Trespass (Juss Feel It)” delivers 140 BPM of filthy frequencies straight to the brain stem in just over four minutes. You juss gotta feel it. Next, “Trespass Dat A$$” slows the pace down and turns up the spanking. This one is all about the thick, pulsing kickdrum, lush pads, and deep moans. The flip side belongs to Grey People. “Intercepting Encrypted Messages” channels a repetitive, bloopy synth rhythm and powerful drums before the hi-hats and claps smack the dancefloor. “Cop Watch” draws on Grey People’s Chicago roots for a dynamic and frenetic dance.
