On 11 October 2010, Brainfeeder released the debut album by a 23 year old ex-skater, painter and music producer from Chino Hills called Teebs (real name Mtendere Mandowa). The title 'Ardour' means great enthusiasm, love or passion and was a fitting descriptor for his inherently warm, lushly textured beats. It’s an undisputed classic in the Brainfeeder canon and more widely considered an essential chapter in the ever-evolving puzzle of the global “beat scene”.

Brainfeeder and Teebs are celebrating the 10th anniversary with a limited special edition reissue of this landmark record. Pressed on deep pink 2LP and housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve with artwork by Teebs himself, the new edition features six previously unreleased bonus tracks.

With roots at the ‘My Hollow Drum’ collective, Dublab and Low End Theory, Teebs has been a staple in Los Angeles music. “My creative family in LA is so important,” he explains. “It’s a part of who I am when I step outside and how others in LA view me. I love the feeling of community and trying to understand how I can be useful in it.”

Following 'Ardour' (2010), Teebs released 'Collections' (2011), 'Estara' (2014) and, after a 5 year hiatus, his most recent album 'Anicca' in 2019, with the help of a host of musical friends including Panda Bear (Animal Collective), Sudan Archives, Ringgo Ancheta aka MNDSGN, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Anna Wise. Universally acclaimed, Pitchfork gave 'Anicca' a glowing 7.8 review hailing Mandowa’s “effortless, shape-shifting tracks that make time stand still.” Meanwhile, FADER described the record as “deeply atmospheric... cool-headed and uncanny.”

The 96th release of Dope Folks is a compilation of tracks from veteran producer SPECTACULAR DIAGNOSTICS!!! Chicago-based musician/visual artist Robert Krums first began releasing music as Spectacular Diagnostics in 2015. Previously recording as "Earmint", Krums had his first major production placement in 2003 alongside Madlib and Prefuse 73 on Chicago's Chocolate Industries. His continued efforts led to the 2006 release of an Earmint solo LP, Another Early Evening, on the now-defunct EV records. Another Early Evening garnered national exposure with glowing reviews from Okayplayer and URB, and featured collaborations with Murs, Psalm One, Illogic and others. In 2007, Earmint landed production spots for Royce da 5’9" and Psalm One on EV records Everything compilation, crafted a remix for Eliot Lipp appearing on Hefty Records and released his own Gallery LP for free download. A lengthy release hiatus ensued until Krums' 2015 reemergence as Spectacular Diagnostics, but 10 plus years on from his solo debut, Krums proves he can still shine alongside today's freshest new talent. And reality was even more colorful, the procession absorbed me with a magic swirl and I was unable to make a clear decision against it. This is the moment in my life where I lost control, I was not myself anymore and things started to happen faster and more intense than I ever experienced. A cosmic ritual was happening, did they celebrate my arrival? The next thing I remember was the water flowing out of Enki's shoulders while Inanna seduced me to drink from it. They where fully aware that I had no idea what is gonna happen to me and they seem to enjoy my innocent questions. Totally delivered to the gods in the temple of Eridu, I was praying for mercy as I thought this would be my end. There was no pain, no suffering but I felt this was my execution.

“In Passing” began as an elegy for Glasper’s Houston friend, Scooby, who died in 1999. “I never could finish the tune, but I started working on it again when Aliyah died,” Glasper says. “Not too long after that, 9/11 happened. That made me finish the song. It’s about how your time on earth is passing.” Glasper ends the program with the incendiary “L N K Blues,” setting up a John Ellis-Marcus Strickland tenor battle that implicitly affirms his connection to and extensions of the idiom that defined the sound of jazz in Houston from the ‘40s through the ‘60s. —Ted Panken, Downbeat, Jazziz, WKCR, 2003 The trio embarks on their own voyage with Glasper’s “Lil’ Tipsy,” using compression-expansion techniques to explore in painstaking detail a disjunctive dance of inebriation. Glasper uses the concluding vamp as a spur-of-the-moment opportunity to segue directly into “Alone Together.” There ensues an avid triologue, Hurst holding down the bottom as Glasper and Reid, with nonchalant confidence, weave through of an obstacle course of rhythmic signatures. On “Mood,” a quintet track, Moreno and Ellis offer beautiful contrapuntal section playing and pungent solos, capturing the composer’s intent to resolve from a melancholy opening to an impassioned feelgood vamp. Bilal ratchets the intensity on “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” a bluesy jazz ballad to which Glasper wrote the melody and the lyric. Glasper says: “I have a certain feel, a certain way of thinking and imagining of and hearing harmony, and it all descends from coming up in and playing music in the church.” Glasper returns to ebullience on a creative and virtuosic treatment of Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies.” There was a detergent commercial that used it during my first year in school,” he relates, “and I was singing all the time. Then someone told me it was a jazz tune. I arranged it for a concert at school. A year later, I came up with this arrangement. “‘Interlude’ happened because we kept playing after I faded out from the drum solo, and when I listened to the tape I thought the hip-hop part was hot. Hip-hop is a part of me, too, and I wanted to have that influence on the album.”

The ranks of Camizole included some of the most essential personalities of the French underground, notably Dominique Grimaud (Vidéo-Aventures), Chris Chanet (Etron Fou Leloublan) and Bernard Filipetti (Art & Technique). Their idea of music, if we look further than the pair Dominique Grimaud – Bernard Filipetti and a style of music influenced by Klaus Schulze, is inspired by the liberty of free jazz. This is nonetheless modified by a cathartic approach close to the esthetic preoccupations of Julian Beckand Judith Malina's Living Theatre. The result is a musical happening, where the important thing is to improvise in the urgency of the moment in front of a not-always receptive public.

Before exploring constructed repetitive forms which would be perfected by Urban Sax, Lard Free were more in the domain of noise improvisation, or even a kind of jazz rock similar to that of Soft Machine, as can be heard on a late retrospective album, from which the track "À chacun son Boulez" emerged.

There was logically great complicity between Camizole and Lard Free, which would lead to the two groups finally merging. This was the case for four concerts in May before the two groups disbanded in order to finally get to grips with the free rock in the style of Faust that they liked so much. Is freedom worth more than mastery, construction and achievement? In replying yes, the utopians of Camizole clear show which side they are on. For them, musical creation must be as spontaneous as possible. To achieve this, it is better to put egos to one side to concentrate on collective experimentation, to be tried and tested in front of a live audience. Playing the card of unlimited and unhindered improvisation is Camizole's crédo, having decided to get a taste of the urgent game-playing already established by the Nihilist Spasm Band and the Living Theatre research of Julian Beck and Judith Malina.

At the time, that is to say when punk was exploding, this concept, itself inherited from the May 68 events, made an impact on Chris Cutler of Henry Cow, but also Lindsay Cooper, who invited Camizole member Françoise Crublé to join the Feminist Improvising Group. Also, the Tapioca label run by Jean Georgakarakos (co-founder of BYG Records), considered producing an album, from a live recording made at the Théâtre de Chartres in November 1977. Unfortunately the label rapidly ceased all activities and the recording was left in a drawer, which was a real shame.

Today, after extracts and other live bits and pieces came out via Spalax at the end of the 1990s, an integral double-album is finally being released to do justice to the collective created by Jacky Dupéty, and which included, amongst others Dominique Grimaud(Vidéo-Aventures), Chris Chanet (Etron Fou Leloublan, Urban Sax), Xavier Jouvelet (notably heard alongside Lol Coxhill) and Bernard Filipetti (Art & Technique). Backwoodz Studioz is proud to announce the upcoming release of Henry Canyons’ first full-length LP exclusively
under the Backwoodz umbrella. Cool Side of the Pillow is entirely produced by Henry’s longtime collaborator, Matt
“Bones” Bowen, with guest features from billy woods and Homeboy Sandman. It’s a project that finds Henry putting
his effortless flows to the test over Bones’ rangy production, flipping new styles with every changeup and beat switch.
“Cool Side didn’t start as an album,” Henry explains, “Bones and I started making random joints that were almost all
jazz/funk samples; I’d send him sample ideas and he would send me back a beat the next day”. It was a fun thing that
they talked about making into an EP, but was briefly shelved when Henry accepted an artists’ residency in Biarritz,
France in the fall of 2016. After the residency was completed, Henry returned to the project with new perspective. “I
was still in France, and in a different place mentally, physically and emotionally. Also Bones’ production had taken a
darker, more pensive turn. What came out were reactions to being abroad and isolated during a time of upheaval at
home. This duality frames The Cool Side both artistically, and in it’s presentation. Side A and Side B reflects not just
the sides of the vinyl, but the tensions between past and present, between the ideal and the real.

In the late 80's and early 90's Powerule stood century as the vanguard of an eventual Latin explosion in Hip Hop. Dominating mix shows and video mediums the Nuyorican experience in hip hop culture finally had their own voice. In 1991 they released their debut album Volume 1” on Interscope Records that featured Leaders of The New School, Large Professor & Kurious Jorge. Powerule and 2Pac were the first Hip Hop artists signed to Interscope.

Powerule went on to pave the way for artist like Fat Joe , Kurious , Big Pun , Tony Touch , The Beatnuts and others. Throughout the 1990s they released a string of classic singles such as "Dawn to Dusk”, "Bright Lights Big City", "Rock your Knot Quick" , "Heatin up" & “Well Connected” produced by some of Hip Hop’s most celebrated producers: Mark Ronson, Erick Sermon & VIC from The Beatnuts.

Since then Powerule moved on to other areas of interest. 20 years later these pioneers have returned with even more potent production and lyricism. Their first ever soon to be classic 7" vinyl features Hip Hop Royalties finest. Official Army Of The Pharaohs and Demigodz emcee Blacastan has been steadily staking his claim to the title of ‘savior of underground rap music’ since his debut mixtape Me Against The Radio and its key cut and video "Life Of A Tape" became an underground cult classic in 2007. The rapper turned his attention to the mic after the Hartford, CT street life, and his strong-arm style of handling business, left a then 16-year-old Blacastan serving a bid in the mid-'90s. He emerged from prison with a remarkable skill set, a throwback style, and an unrivaled drive.
His 2010 debut album Blac Sabbath boasted production & vocals from the likes of Statik Selektah, Blue Sky Black Death, Mr. Green, Esoteric and Celph Titled, and 2012’s The Master Builder Part II, which was mixed by legendary DJ Doo Wop, had features from Slaine and Reef the Lost Cauze, among others. The duo is back with The Uncanny Adventures of Watson & Holmes, a sophomore effort that improves on the first in every way. Stu gets completely brutal with the beats, and Blac ups the ante on the rhymes. Plus, they’ve enlisted Ill Bill (Non-Phixion, La
Coka Nostra), Nutso, Apathy (Demigodz, AOTP) 7L & Esoteric (AOTP, Czarface), and Tragedy Khadafi to lend their talents to the project.

Floating Points’ first productions emerged in 2008 and 2009, around the same time that he moved from Manchester to London (where he, fairly famously, studied neuroscience). He collaborated with early supporter Alexander Nut on Eglo, a label that has housed music by Fatima, Funkineven and Floating Points himself. Eglo has remained the main home for Floating Points’ music, though he’s also released on Planet Mu, Ninja Tune and Border Community. He also played a key role at now-closed London club Plastic People, as both a resident and a sounding board for its set-up.

For Elaenia’s artwork, Floating Points “built a harmonograph from scratch to create the artwork for Elaenia, the end result created by using it and 2 fibre optic cables of 0.5 and 1.5mm diameters, which were connected to light sources responding to bass drum and white noise percussive sounds from the album track ‘For Marmish’.”

The album features various contributors, including Tom Skinner and Leo Taylor (drums), Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne and Layla Rutherford (vocals), Susumu Mukai (bass), Alex Reeve (guitar), Qian Wu and Edward Benton (violin), Matthew Kettle (viola) and Joe Zeitlin (cello). Floating Points also contributes vocals.
