Emotional Rescue presents the music of Haile Maskel in the first in a reissue series working with Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb, sourcing and licensing from this digger's vaults and out to the wider world. Heralding from the furtive 60's Trenchtown, Jamaica, young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel grew up singing, learning guitar and bass. His first recording session was produced by friend Bob Marley, with Peter Tosh on keys, Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Carlton Barrett on drums. The list of sessions is long, working with Lee Perry, Light Of Saba, Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott. Touring took him overseas where he settled in Los Angeles in 1983, soon launching his Opulence Sound) label. Maskel's band, the 101's featured members of The Twinkle Brothers, including cousins Asher and Debo Brown on drum and bass, and augmented by local players. Mixing conscious messages in love songs, Maskel crafts a boogie discodub on which to exalt an uplifting summer jam. With the highly prized original the tapes unearthed unreleased dubs - "Take 1" providing a wonderful version. LA native Duckcomb found a trove of tapes of unheard material, still for discovery. For now, his longform Discomix, cutting and editing Maskel's vocal along with the dubs, completes a first archival splendor.

Plus 4 Unreleased Bonus Songs! This is a band project from the late 1960s with a very young Bobby Marin, a leading figure in the invention of BOOGALOO music, a cocktail of Latin music, Rhythm & Blues, Soul and Rock’n’Roll oft he day clearly geared towards the western pop music that made the top of the charts. As he grew up on 107th Street in Harlem / NYC he and his mates played a game called Stickball during the day which is a street variation of baseball originating from the New York area while at night he rehearsed with a doo wop ensemble named THE LATIN CHORDS and others from his team got together in a percussion group in buildings on the opposite site of the street. It was no miracle that both groups soon merged into one act that became the 107TH STREET STICKBALL TEAM producing this sole LP in 1969 with a 7“ decoupled probably upfront that featured the two album tracks „On old Broadway“ and „Mojo shingaling“. Well shaped originals of the full length vinyl go for 200,00 € now as a mono pressing, while even those which fetch lower prices never fall beyond 100,00 €. Therefore this reissue on Everland Records suits us fans of outstanding 1960s music fairly well with even four bonus tracks added that band leader Marin unearthed from his personal vaults. This is clearly a typical album in the field of BOOGALOO music of the later 1960s. Western popular music such as beat with British roots, American soul music with lush arrangements and orchestration and the well known elements of bossa nova, salsa, cha cha cha and merengue team up in an exciting sound that gave us some very intense albums during the short span of it’s real popularity in between 1966 and 1969 around NYC but also far out in the latin world. The anthems of one’s life in the Bronx or in Harlem given by the likes of Tito Puente could be felt pouring out of the relaxed, yet intensely pulsating rhythms from drums and percussion on this record while the melodic constructions on top of this groundwork were either soul inspired such as with the hauntingly dreamy opener „On old broadway“ with a great pop appeal and beautiful horn section and vocal arrangements, had a bluesy approach such as the ballad „Look to me“ in three – quarter time at first but adopting a latin melody and cha cha cha beat towards the end of the song or showed a 1960s pop beat affinity with the vocal melodies on top of a bed of ever grooving mid paced salsa rhythms with powerful horns accompanying the basic structures as you can hear it in the two minute shorty you put a hurt in my heart. But this was only one side oft he coin. There were even more traditional latin songs to be found here which were even sung in Spanish. „Toma Guajira“ could easily be an evergreen on the dancefloor in every bar in Havanna. The mixture was breathtaking for you did not get away from dancing and twirling to the enthralling rhythms upon which sometimes the instruments could take a frantic path such as the organs or the saxophone in the soul inspired instrumental „Barbara with the kooky eyes“, which has this typical late 60s atmosphere. Wherever you put the needle in the groove the music will grab you by the heart and legs. The four bonus tracks fit well with the original album and if you would not know they were added only for this reissue you would never realize they would have stayed unreleased for about 50 years. „Come live with me“ is a hot blooded latin groover with a late 50s soul and doo wop feel merged with cumbia and salsa elements. The melodies drag you straight into the clubs of Cuba’s capital. „Rosemary with the funny knees“ is rather modern soul pop and Northern soul of the day in which more of these Cuban aspects appear for a moment but with the late 60s sound prevailing. It feels like the band drifts from one one world into the other and back without losing a beat. „Hey mama“ is a cross of 60s doo wop vocal music and Latin sounds that makes up a prototypical boogaloo style dance floor sweeper. „Lost in the jungle“ adds some 1950s exotica elements to the haunting 60s pop with latin rhythm groundwork and once more frantic performances from the horns and the singers make it an instant classic. I could go on raving about this album but instead I recommend to buy a copy of the reissue and get the full boogaloo experience. If I should limit myself to only one record from this style it would certainly be this.

I’m not living my life so good, tell me, how about you?’ What can we really say about 14th Wish, how did this band even exist? This record and band were Completely unknown up until the last couple of years, when we were approached by a notorious record fiend who was looking for more info after our official release of David Peel’s King of Punk LP. Here we have a band with no paper trail, zero online search results, and released in a tiny quantity on Orange Records in 1980, right alongside the first GG Allin and Eddie Criss Group LPs. But instead of a stylized gutter glam workout with a hot-shot studio guitarist, 14th Wish trip over themselves with a snotty/sloppy amateurism that veers farther into the beloved ‘Killed By Death’ arena, with it’s sweltering TAPEWORM-style lead guitar freak-outs.
Fronted by the mysterious figure known as Halo Peace, both 14th Wish tracks offer a refreshing mid-tempo crud-punk slop-take on the sounds swirling around the drain of the Lower East Side at the end of the 1970s. Although both tracks aren’t lightning fast, their instant ominous catchiness and absolutely sordid and squalorous guitar tone suggests a more murderous background, as well. Mention of this record just drew blanks across from the board, from all of the rare punk record dealers, to the most avid international collectors, and even NYC scene members from the time. Never even turned up in a Mike Bastarache Want List! And of course, the internet was no help either. Was this really one that Everyone missed? Recommended If You Like: Tapeworm, GG Allin & the Jabbers, Freestone, The Trend, Mentally Ill, The Gears, Killed By Death compilations.”

Massive industrial noise and free jazz blasts_ 16-17 returning with new material after 25 years. Founded 1983 in Basel by saxophonist Alex Buess and former drummer Knut Remond, they have been shaping the forefront of a new sound area. Playing an abrasive distorted mix of dub, hardcore and free jazz that lead to a meeting of likeminded heavy heads that temporally took part in the band e.g. Kevin Martin (The Bug, Techno Animal) or G.C. Green (Godflesh). After marking their presence and extensive European tours, the band officially split up in 2000. 291out ensemble return on Fly By Night with another well orchestrated project by Riccio.
The latest release on FBNM, 291out - Habbanera is thematically inspired by the 1982 Italian film score, "No Grazie il Caffè Mi Rende Nervoso" "No Thanks, Coffee Makes Me Nervous".
It was originally composed by James Senese and directed by Lodovico Gasparini, "Habbanera" has only previously been released on Senese's self titled LP in 1983.
This four tracker includes two new versions of the main title theme "Habbanera" and two remixes by the two Italian pioneers of house music and the balearic sound; Leo Mas and Fabrice.
291out "Original Version" is a cover of the main score theme, which also features on Senese's 1983 LP; the "Alternate Version" is also taken from the movie, but from a different scene, which has the same melody of the opening theme but with a different rhythm, never having been released before and completely reassembled by 291out.
Leo Mas & Fabrice provide two different cuts, one pitched-down boogie slow jam and one 4/4 dance-floor banger.

3 Elements was a trio of UK producers who self-released ‘Somewhere Else’ in 1996. Their small discography shines amongst peers such as B12, Stasis and Nuron in ’90s electronica. One of the members, Andy Jaggers, has continued to release on Touchin’ Bass (Andrea Parker), For Those That Knoe (Derek Car, Carl Finlow) and his own label Pyramid Transmissions. So it’s an honor for us to have 30drop onboard. For this special occasion 30drop provides six cuts of futuristic techno but with a ravey approach in a time backspin that brings us back to the 90’s via Sci-Fi, reminding in some way of the early UR records, when Mad Mike and Jeff Mills worked together on the soundtrack of the future. This is our first mini LP with 3 cuts per side. The first cut is Brain reset, the short drone intro soon leads to a relentless groove made of repetitive sequences over a fast groove. Intense and obsessive. Mental Understanding brings more minimalistic ingredients, absence of hi hats, just kick drum and synth lines. Brain effervescence showcases the infamous 90’s hoover sound bringing the rave element and 303 acid lines all merged in a lawless and dense mixture. B side opens with Self awareness, starting with ethereal atmospheres, spiced with resonant bleeps and micro drones in a beat-less exercise. Klapaucjusz brings back the 90’s feeling again with analogue arpeggios and melodies, again over a clean groove in a Detroit oriented number. Given the respective outputs of committed ambient explorers and sound designers zake (best known for releasing no less than five fine albums in 2019) and 36 (most recently seen on A Strangely Isolated Place with the superb album "Fade To Grey"), you'd expect this trip into aural deep space to be rather good. It is of course, with the four tracks mixing echoing sonic tones and drifting sound effects with slow-burn electronic melodies and the kind of immersive, sustained chords that were once the preserve of German maestro Pete Namlook. The third track in the suite, appropriately titled 'Stage 3', is little less than stunning, in part because of its grandiose, almost classical intent. No surprise to discover, then, that after a stretch of being out of print it's back via a reissue, this version being a limited clear vinyl edition.

Rochester, New York, February 25th, 2019 - 38 Spesh's buzz is running through the industry like a wild fire right now. While this MC/producer/entrepreneur is not some overnight success that just appeared on the scene, many music critics only became aware of him last year. In fact, Flour City recording artists like Eto, Pounds, and 38 Spesh have been out here delivering quality product for more than a decade. Being a native of Rochester, DJ Green Lantern has been attempting to shed light on the area's talent for 10 years+ as well. And he has consistently worked with Spesh since as far back as 2005.

Spesh was lured back to the streets while Trap was dominating the airwaves and Hip-Hop sales. Drummer/producer Teppo Mäkynen presents a new album by his lauded trio ensemble 3TM in 2019. Drummer/producer Teppo Mäkynen's 3TM returns with a new album, "Lake", on 29 November on Helsinki's We Jazz Records. The album is the much awaited follow up to 2017's successful 3TM debut "Form", which was awarded as the "Jazz Album of the Year" in Mäkynen's native Finland. "Lake" was preceded by the ambient electronic album "Abyss" in August, which set the mood for what's to come next: A compact yet far-reaching body of work bringing together the trio's acoustic jazz sound and ideas rooted in abstract electronic music in a remarkably boundless way.

"Lake" is a collection of 9 Mäkynen-penned originals ranging from the looping, hypnotic compositions such as first single "Laws Of Life" to the delicacy of tracks such as "Woods". There is a sense of long form narrative here, evident in glorious, slowly evolving tracks such as "Lake" and "A Pile Of Broken Dreams". The overall sound is swinging, melodic, deep and futuristic. It's acoustic jazz and abstract electronic music understood deeply and used as the base of a new sound, which goes beyond the usual distinctions of "acoustic jazz" or "electronic music". NYC’s 75 Dollar Bill began its prolific career in 2012, after percussionist Rick Brown—a veteran of the indie underground (Fish & Roses, Run On, V-Effect)—and noise scene guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Che Chen—connected via MySpace. Since that initial jam session, when Brown began experimenting with his signature plywood crate drum rhythms, they have released three LPs and a clutch of self-released cassette and digital releases. Last year’s double album I Was Real received serious critical acclaim—The Wire calling it 2019’s Album of the Year. On their first live album, Live At Tubby’s, 75 Dollar Bill assembled a unique “little big band” [Sue Garner on bass, Cheryl Kingan on sax, Steve Maing on guitar, Jim Pugliese on percussion and Karen Waltuch on viola] for the small Kingston, NY club show. Recorded on the last day of their spring tour, the record puts a new perspective on themes from their body of work: a little more intimacy, a little more freedom, a little more controlled chaos. Brown’s idiosyncratic rhythms are all the more hypnotizing in Tubby’s cozy setting, and Chen’s furious guitar work cuts and hums with sounds seemingly only attainable on stage. It’s an album both challenging and immediate. The expanded 75 Dollar Bill’s affinity for improvisation and the avant-garde even leads to a rousing take on the Ornette Coleman classic, “Friends And Neighbors” that feels right at home in their own repertoire. The listener can’t help but feel present and part of the communal joy and catharsis being shared here in this room. This performance at Tubby’s turned out not only to be the last show of their tour, but the last show possible as the pandemic hit. With the announcement of their long awaited, highly anticipated debut full length
release, 79.5 drops a new and revamped version of their underground classic
Boy Don’t Be Afraid. Producer Leon Michels took it back in the studio and made it into
a proper two stepper, slowed it down a touch, and added percussion and Wurly. The result
is another sure shot side for the dance floor from one of New York City’s most adored
underground acts. Like many of the girl group classics, Boy Don't Be Afraid is a song about
love. But beyond that, it is a song about being—being hopeful, being romantic, being brave.
A romantic stance and a declaration of love through melody.
The B Side, I Stay, You Stay is a beautiful number about meeting in the middle and a
testament to a woman’s intuition. A love song starting in hesitation, walking through
admiration, and ending in certainty and gratitude. The ladies weave this tale trading leads
and combining voices seamlessly over the band’s signature in the pocket drums and bass,
rhodes chords, and flute flourishes. I Stay, You Stay is a perfect example of one of the
defining things about 79.5 and why they are known as the “Mid Tempo Maidens”, as the
lyrics reflect “they don’t have to rush, they have lots of time”.

In 1975, Brooklyn transplant Pepe Willie booked time at Cookhouse Recording Studios in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to demo five original compositions. Without roots in the Twin Cities' insular scene, Willie had no fixed backing group to help realize the arrangements he and vocalists Marcy Ingvoldstad and Kristie Lazenberry had been rehearsing. Willie organized a young cast of backing musicians for the session, among them his wife's cousin: a 16-year-old guitar prodigy named Prince Rogers Nelson. Known colloquially as "The Cookhouse 5" these recordings showcase Prince's instantly recognizable guitar playing, seasoning to perfection 94 East's short-but-sweet songbook. A crucial document concerning the origins of the Minneapolis Sound, the B-side boasts instrumental versions of each infectious tune, providing an even greater vantage point from which to admire the Purple One's expressive playing style, already evident in his teenage years.
