We're back from hibernation after releasing the third Roundup at the end of 2016 and we're starting off with a new signing. Milan based Parker Madicine joins Heist with some high tech funk with a serious nod to the “D” and we've got Byron the Aquarius delivering a great jazzy remix. You'll be more likely to find Parker Madicine browsing through boxes of old jazz and soul records than you'll see him showcasing his social media skills. He's a real vinyl junky and moreover a hip hop fanatic and probably loves his synthesizers more than his mother. Apart from promoting funk and soul oriented parties in Milan, he founded CT-HI records, short for “Contemporary Theories of Hip Hop Influences". A few years back he teamed up a.o. with his buddies Veez-O and Turbojazz to create some Dilla and early 90's inspired hip hop and these influences are clearly present in his EP for Heist. With Heartbreaker, he lays down a dreamy but heavy groove for the first minute or so, arpeggiating its way to the moment where the airy pads make room for a looser than loose groove where synth stabs and bass line dance around each other creating a killer vibe. Zawinul starts in the same manner, rough kick, loose and degraded hi-hats and dreamy Rhodes chords. The tracks build further with some lovely brassy hits and arps, whereas Placebo is the most stripped back but high tempo track, where an airy and delayed bassline does most of the work to set the mood. We're really happy to have Byron the Aquarius reworking one of PM's tracks. He's been on a roll with his releases on Sound Signature, Wild Oats and recently remixed Max Graef on Ninja Tune. The publication Source Book 1 represents the beginning of a and authorized review of the past 20 years of the label Raster-Noton. A short introductory preface by olaf bender is followed by a keynote interview conducted by berlin publicist Max Dax that provides an insight into the identity and philosophy of the label heads. The main part of this first Source Book comprises the extensive catalog of all releases and series published between 1996 and 2016. Tabular listings of various formats and products that were distributed or curated by Raster-Noton complete the catalog. A further exclusive part of the publication is the accompanying Archiv 4 CD, which is only available in connection with the book. Raster-Noton‘s Archiv series was first introduced in december 2003 as a supplement to The Wire magazine and has since been continued in loose sequence with different artists related to the label. Following the idea of the label which defines itself as a platform for its artists, the releases in the catalog part are not presented according to their format, invested effort or meaning, but sorted according to their catalog number and presented on exactly one double page, whereas some series were summarized. As a continuation of this archival revision, further »source books« are planned that will document artist profiles, installations, composition techniques and sources of inspiration. The Source Book 1« is limited to 1.000 copies. Its modular design allows to remove, exchange or add pages, which makes it possible to update the content in due time. A cardboard slipcase covers the 400-page, 3-kilo book and guarantees a safe stand in the bookshelf.

The late, great J Dilla is widely regarded as one of the greatest Hip Hop producers of all time. Continuing our mission to shine light on the genuine anomalies of 70’s Italian production music, Finders Keepers Records resurrects another unlikely transcription disc from the vaults of one of Rome’s most esoteric library music archives. This bizarre one-off theatrical project, composed and recorded at Umiliani’s studio, was commissioned for a short-run demonic religious performance entitled Tempo Di Demoni, Papi, Angioli, Incensi E Cilici under the musical direction of former Italian psychedelic beat-group member Stefano Marcucci.

Instantly recognised by Flower Records founder Romano Di Bari as having commercial potential beyond its handful of church and small theatre performances in the early months of 1975, Marcucci agreed that they should commit these bizarre recordings to vinyl as a form of preservation with hope of attracting a wider commercial audience through Di Bari’s Television and Films synchronisation contacts. Sitting slightly ajar to the custom-made projects of its label bedfellows (swapping schedules with experimental theme-music by Alessandro Alessandroni, Gerardo Iacoucci and Anthonio Ricardo Luciani) and confusingly sharing an identical catalog number to another collectable Flower release called Ritimico by (close friend) Paolo Ferrara (LEW 0551) this album has slipped under the radar of many Library label completists over the years attracting confusion, scepticism, polarised opinion but nothing short of astonishment at the bizarre hidden synth-ridden psychedelic concept pop found behind some of the most striking duo-tone artwork to come out of Italy’s most experimental era.

Following up on the success of Lady Wray’s solo debut album Queen Alone, we are

Known worldwide for her early career as a Hip Hop / R&B singer, then more recently
for her more matured Soul inspired writing, the A side of this one “Underneath My
Feet” shows just how hard it is to put Lady Wray in a box. If you haven’t seen her live
show, you may have no idea that she has a healthy bad ass Rock and Roll side to her,
commanding crowds with a raucousness that likens Betty Davis. Underneath My Feet
is a tough blend of glam rock drums and guitar stabs that Nicole takes to like a fish to

The B side is the heart wrenching Guilty, a song Wray wrote to cope with the
incarceration of her brother. One listen and it is impossible to doubt the sincerity,
again showing Cole’s songwriting prowess with imagery of no one to cheers with, and
not wanting to experience the comforts of home knowing her brother was locked up in
a cell. A solid 2 sider showing a different side of Lady Wray than she is typically known
for all wrapped up in a beautiful picture sleeve cover.

Trumpeter/ Composer Sefi Zisling incorporates Afro-Jazz with Psychedelic Funk in this new solo project. Sefi is known as the top trumpeter of Tel Aviv's Jazz & Funk scene. While still attending high school, Sefi performed with various funk and groove acts, laying the foundations for many more musical encounters and fruitful collaborations with other members of the ever-growing Tel Aviv music scene. Sefi performed with bands such as The Ramirez Brothers, Kutiman Orchestra, Funknstein, Gili Yalo, and many more. Today, after fifteen years of recording and performing all over the world alongside almost everyone within the Israeli music scene, Sefi is taking a step forward to release his debut solo album.
'Beyond The Things I Know' has been supported and broadcasted by Giles Peterson on his BBC Radio 6 Music Show, by Toshio Matsuraa on Tokyo Moon Radio and many other radio shows around the world. This is another release from 'Time Grove Selections', the unique series under the Raw Tapes Records umbrella, in which top local musicians are hand-picked to produce solo albums. The album itself is a result of a brief encounter that led to a close friendship between Sefi Zisling and multi-instrumentalist/producer, Rejoicer. The music was created in a three-day studio encounter and ranges from Afro-Jazz to spaced-out beats with influences of Spiritual Jazz, African music and Psychedelic Funk, all led by the trumpet. Nitai Hershkovits is a pianist and composer based in NY. Mostly known from collaborating with renowned bassist Avishai Cohen in the studio and on tour. Combining the classical and Jazz worlds with singer-songwriting elements, Nita's compositions and playing are simple with a twist of complexity. Quickly gaining recognition from critics around the world, Nitai was hailed as 'a genuine prodigy' by The New York Times and 'a remarkable pianist ,reminiscent of a swinger such as the late Hank Jones" by The Guardian. Nitai's debut album I Asked You A Question (Raw Tapes) was released in February 2016. The album, co-produced by Rejoicer (loops and synths) featuring Nitai on vocals, Piano and synths. LA based singer and Stones Throw Records artist Georgia Anne Muldrow and acclaimed guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel joins Nitai on two of the tracks. Exploring the realm of analog electronics, samples and beats, I Asked You A Question is an eclectic, empirical yet genuine attempt of blending improvised ideas and through-composed music. Both Roberto and his own Fossil Archive label continue to go from strength to strength. Roberto has consistently delivered at DJ bookings that have seen him return time and again to the likes of Tresor and fabric, while the label has fast become a favourite in DJ boxes and amongst Techno heads.

The label closed 2016 on a high with its first set of remixes from two Techno legends, Sterac and Rolando. And now for the first release of 2017 Roberto is thrilled to draft in the refined skills of Fachwerk’s Roman Lindau. Roberto has of course released on Fachwerk in the past and been featured on the bill on more than one occasion when the Berlin label have taken over Berghain, so Roman is a fitting and very welcome addition to his UK imprint.
Teaming up for ‘Nerinea Trinodosa’ on the A-side, Roman and Roberto’s production styles complement one another perfectly on this solid peak-time offering, bringing a depth and power that continues the Fossil Archive dedication to raw and unfaltering beats.

Roberto then goes it alone for ‘Triage’ on the B-side, a track which was already featured on Alan Fitzpatrick’s recent fabric mix CD. With its tough tribal sound and deep bass, there’s some serious funk in the groove, completing another essential release from the Fossil Archive camp.

The band began writing the album last January, and later in the year, performed the songs at a series of secret shows under fake names. They recorded the album with producer John Congleton (Sleater-Kinney, David Byrne, St. Vincent, Cloud Nothings) in Los Angeles at Sunset Sound (where artists like the Beach Boys and Prince have recorded).
