Harry Belafonte spielte zum Zeitpunkt dieser Aufnahme, am 19. und 20. April 1959, bereits eine gewichtige Rolle im Filmgeschäft. So war es ein Leichtes, die Carnegie Hall in New York mit seinem Namen auszuverkaufen. Worauf niemand vorbereitet war, war die Art und Weise mit der Belafonte das versammelte Publikum in die Musik einbezog. Scheinbar spielend integrierte er zudem seine eigene Band in ein 47-köpfiges Orchester. "Belafonte At Carnegie Hall" ist ein audiophiles Prachtstück für alle, die beim Musikhören auch lachen können. Das Remastering für Analogue Productions übernahm Ryan Smith in den Studios von Sterling Sound in New York.

Das Konzert ist inhaltlich in drei Teile geteilt. Am Beginn stehen Traditionals der schwarzen amerikanischen Bevölkerung, gefolgt von Auszügen karibischer Musik aus Belafontes Jugend auf Jamaica und schlussendlich rundet eine wilde Mischung populärer Stücke aus aller Welt die Aufnahme ab. Das Gesamtwerk erschien beim Label RCA und blieb mehr als drei Jahre in den US-Charts. Sie begründete die enorme Popularität der späteren Belafonte-Live-Shows.

Double bassist and composer Cachao Lopez was one of the greatest personalities in the history of Cuban music. A true innovator who already in the 40's pioneered a new exciting form of dance music subsequently worldwide known as mambo. "Cuban Music in Jam Session'' stands as one of his classic albums from the late 50's. A great example of Cachao's innovative jam sessions called "descargas" where various legendary musicians such as tenor sax player Emilio Penalver and trumpeters Armando "Chocolate" Armenteros and Alejandro "Negro" Vivar, improvise over highly infectious grooves and rhythms laid down by Cachao himself on bass and a bunch of super tight percussionists. Prioritizing mood over traditional orchestration, it was the highest-profile free jazz album, released before the terms ‘free jazz’ and ‘avant-garde jazz’ even existed. Coleman’s bravery opened the door for others to experiment with the genre in ways they wouldn’t have before. Without 'The Shape of Jazz to Come', who knows if Coltrane would have had the heart to try spiritual jazz, or if an up-and-coming pianist named Herbie Hancock would’ve been bold enough to blend funk into his atmospheric hybrid. Long before Denny started heading into outer space with his Moog work, he was keeping us just floating slightly above the ground with the sounds of the earth-and The Enchanted Sea is one of his most grounded and beautiful works. Unlike many of his other exotica records (which are filled with the sound of the jungle, its wildlife, and the smell of the tiki bar smoke) this one has the feeling of a tumbler full of ice, walking barefoot on a sandy beach in the twilight, while breathing in the salt air. There are early glimpses here of where he was starting to head with Psychedelic-treated pianos, ethereal female vocals, and abstract orchestration beginning to find their way into the listener's ears. It's an album that seems less comical than some of his earlier work, with an allure more from the heart, without the heartbreak (even though the occasional tinge of wistfulness surrounds it).

It's tempting for "Blues In Orbit" to be overlooked when Duke Ellington's best albums are discussed, but truly it's an undisputed gem. There are 14 tracks, none of them is longer than 4:50 and it is all good stuff. There are some familiar favorites such as "In A Mellotone" and "C Jam Blues" as well as less often heard gems like "Blues In Blueprint and "Sweet And Pungent". It is also in stereo, and the arrangements are superb.
The featured performers include Ellington stalwarts Johnnie Hodges, Ray Nance, Harry Carney and Jimmy Hamilton, as well as the less familiar Booty Wood and Matthew Gee. Johnnie, in particular is well showcased here, taking the lead not only in slow pieces like "Brown Penny" and "Sentimental Lady", but also in the rousing "Smada".
The full Analogue Productions reissue treatment is at work on this smashing LP — famed mastering engineer Bernie Grundman handled the remastering from the original analog tapes. The lacquers were plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings, maker of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly we've stashed each super-silent 200-gram disc in a premium Stoughton Printing gatefold jacket.
All of the takes were recorded during after midnight sessions recorded over two nights starting on December 2, 1959 in New York at Columbia Record's studio on East 30th Street. Each night Duke's late dinner arrived at 2 a.m. — a sizzling steak, a pot of coffee with lemons in it, portions of American cheese, and grapefruits. After dinner, and a breather for the band, the sessions finished around dawn in a swinging fashion.
If you're just getting into jazz, this album is highly recommended as a great way to initiate your collection. The sound is incredible, with packaging to match. Another audiophile home run.

There is nothing hurried about this disc. That said, the music is focused and will stretch your mind. Lewis employed masterful melodic improvisers here: Paul Gonsalves, Eric Dolphy, Jim Hall among others. Listen to "Body And Soul" as it builds powerfully and the soloists explore every possible melodic theme, where the quiet power of these master musicians is almost too much to take. Listen to "I Remember Clifford" where the players are essentially the MJQ with Jim Hall replacing Milt Jackson. This set swings, but oh-so-elegantly. Just like Mr. Lewis.
S.C.Berry
Whether you're an old-time jazz afficionado or new to the genre, this album is essential. In my opinion, Lewis' lovely solo on "Body & Soul" makes his version virtually definitive - 15 minutes of bliss. The rest of the album, particularly "Afternoon In Paris", is at the same level. "Wonderful" is the perfect title for this record.
