Total turns 21 this year, and Kompakt’s venerable compilation series couldn’t have asked for a more auspicious coming-of-age collection. If Total 20 was consolidation against the odds, the Kompakt crew producing for a dreamt-of dancefloor in an uncertain future, then Total 21 feels abuzz and alive with possibilities. Significantly, it’s the first Total in some time that’s streamlined down to a single disc; this makes Total 21 even punchier than usual, a joyous, reflective, and always thrilling 75-minute audio scan of the world according to Kompakt.

As with every instalment of Total, there’s a deft balancing here of Kompakt regulars and new blood. Of the latter, there’s a first appearance by Kollmorgen, remixed by Patrice Bäumel into an astral torch song; Amsterdam’s Nicky Elisabeth, offering up Roman FLÜGEL’s pulsating, arpeggiated remix of “Celeste”; and Captain Mustache swoops down into view, Play Paul in tow, with the dream-like electro lift-off that is “Everything”. Jonathan Kaspar also drops by with a new track, “Von Draussen”, a stealthy and lethal floor-hugger with prowling bass.

Elsewhere, there’s the lead track to Michael Mayer’s astonishing recent EP, “Brainwave Technology”, which not-so-gently spears the tech-futurist babble of AI, transhumanism and posthumanism, soundtracked by one of Mayer’s typically lush, glimmering soundscapes. John Tejada reaches back to the heyday of glitch and dub techno with the gorgeous “Spectral Progressions”, while the brothers Voigt & Voigt, on “Nicht Mein Job”, seem reinvigorated by the interwoven patterns and funky minimalism of the Profan days. Not to be outdone, Jürgen Paape kicks Total 21 with “La Guittara Romantica”, a chiming and lilting lullaby for woozy late-night reflection.

Throughout, it feels as though Kompakt are taking a moment to both breathe in the dust of the past and look forward to a bright future. Perhaps that’s why, on “Fasson”, Sascha Funke seems so confident, with pinprick melodies bouncing around a hall of audio mirrors, or why THE Bionaut returns with “Blue Sky Motor Lodge”, a song so moistly melancholy, so enduringly lovely, it’ll make you weep tears of joy. Robag Wruhme gets a little delirious on the ticking, twisting “No”, and then GUI Boratto mops everything up with the bubbling, bumping glam-stomp “Wake Up”.

That’s not all – spring for the digital and/or vinyl edition and you’ll get a new cut, “Happy”, from Michael Mayer, and Marc Romboy & C.A.R.’s “I Am A Dancer”. Black Truffle is pleased to announce the latest offering from underground legend Richard Youngs. Hyperactive since the late 1980s, Youngs is widely celebrated for his remarkably extensive and varied body of recordings. His works range freely over a vast terrain, wandering from tender acoustic balladry to raging psychedelic noise and orchestral D-beat, always imbued with his distinctive, often mournful, melodic sensibility and irrepressible sense of joyous experimentation. Comprised of two side-long pieces, Cxxi carried on the experiments with chance operations used to generate material on many of Youngs’ recent releases. On ‘Tokyo Photograph’, a slowly changing, randomly generated sequence of 121 minor chords played by sine waves and accented with a brushed snare hit on every change provides the harmonic foundation for Youngs’ fragile yet impassioned vocal performance, shards of field recordings and electronics and Sophie Cooper’s long, tape-echoed trombone notes. While the melancholic drift of the chords calls up prime Robert Wyatt sides like Old Rottenhat or Dondestan, only the most vestigial sense of song remains here, as Youngs arranges his minimal ingredients over a spacious fifteen-minute expanse that often drops to nothing more than the rich hum of sine waves. ‘The Unlearning’ carries on directly from the first side, presenting another, more harmonically varied, sequence of randomly generated chords played by sine waves, distressed with tape echo flourishes and sparsely sprinkled with electronic touches. Like some of Youngs’ most single-minded instrumental works in recent years, such as his recordings of foot-played guitar or his shakuhachi pieces, ‘The Unlearning’ is deeply meditative but entirely remote from ambient or minimalist cliches.

Named after the number of chord changes on the opening piece and (Chicago-style) the number of records Youngs has released, Cxxi arrives in a striking monochrome sleeve featuring play-along chord charts for both pieces. Both rigorously conceptual and endearingly off-the-cuff, Cxxi is classic Richard Youngs.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting late in the evening just before sunset at Chlodwigplatz in Cologne. For a few years I sat here almost every evening with my best girlfriend, until the café we liked so much fell prey to gentrification and general indifference. For that long, we just sat here in this place and watched people rush to the train stop, go shopping, or heading home. Usually at some point, a homeless person we know briefly came by and we gave him some money. The square and its people are a mixture of very beautiful and incredibly ugly. It is full of contradictions. Like so many things in life. Chlodwigplatz is the heart of this part of town where I have lived for over 20 years. Sometimes I see Julian walking by, somehow elated and always elegantly dressed; we greet, talk briefly, maybe he goes to do sports or to his apartment a few streets away to make music. With Julian, I never really know whether he is happy or very sad. But you can see right away that he feels a lot. Probably we both live here in this city, in this neighborhood, for exactly this one reason. This evening, the sky over the city is a sea of light and colours. The unique meteorological spectacle of nature is reminiscent of impressionist painting, and it is so overwhelmingly beautiful that the social networks are full of photos of this orgy of orange, yellow, blue and gray. It looks like the sky is on fire. I have to think back to this sight when I hear "Sky Without Colours" for the first time and look at the cover. The artwork by Frederike Wetzels and Franziska Stetter for Julian's first solo album looks like a minimalist, reduced abstraction of my memory: a calm surface that very gradually goes from a cool blue to warm reddish colours at the bottom of the picture. But in contrast to the described moment, so colourful and euphoric, the title of the album sounds like a deep melancholy, telling you something about absence and loss. In fact, this album is carried by a very special emotion, it is not a work that communicates with the outside world in bright colours and loud words. Instead, it functions like an inverse image of that glowing sky over the city, almost bursting with intensity: it rests entirely within itself, and yet it burns ablaze. Julian Stetter simply turns the inside out, but he does this without pathos, without kitsch. He gently shifts the lines between club and pop, between song and track, - like a painter he blurs the boundaries (and his traces) and lets the transitions slowly blur. Aydo Abay is Julian's voice, moving through him and through the album, expressing, formulating, giving voice to all that the producer himself lacks the words for. In the beautiful title track "Sky Without Colours", in the floating "No Cure" and finally in the slightly gloomy broken "Mountain Of Geeks" you think you hear Neil Tennant singing, so beautiful, so clear and precise, androgynous and always a little sad Abay sounds here. In the instrumental sketches Julian draws on his long and successful experience as a composer of soundtracks and music for film and theater. The opener "Calm" and especially the last track "Sleep", which embrace the album from both sides, are such little masterpieces that, between ambient and the exceedingly nuanced and careful use of sounds and rhythm, invite the brain to take nightly walks. And there is always this emotional ambivalence, laughing and crying eyes at the same time, looking forward, confidently saddened. Hardly a straight bass drum, no fat beats, - Julian Stetter doesn't need any imperatives at all for an album that sounds musically as well as atmospherically like from one cast; it is rich in spirit, intensity and resilience, full of elegance, passion and of excellent timing. Deep down, it is animated by a remarkably self-assured humility. Listening to "Sky Without Colours" and writing about it actually helped me perceive the person behind producer and DJ Julian Stetter differently. The next time I see him at Chlodwigplatz, I will still ask myself whether he is happy or sad. Only the sky, I now see with different eyes.

Rare New Jersey band from the '70s in a grooving, jamming rock—a la Grateful Dead (in their seventies garb, post Pig Pen), Allman Brothers (with Duane still alive), Little Feat—vein. This is the kind of record that gets better the more it goes on, with side two being one of the most desirable in the whole genre. Mad Fables came together in the 1970s before such labels as "jam band" or “indie band" existed. They self-produced and published their own music—they released Get Off in 1977—and established a base of friends who enjoyed music and community. They called it "making a record". Every year Mad Fables would celebrate the end of winter and arrival of Spring, by throwing a huge party to which the entire world was invited. Attendees were asked to bring their signature dish or beverage and the group would play spirited sets of music. The leftovers usually fed the group for a month. Mad Fables drew thousands of people to their self-run events. Far more people say they “saw the band live” than actually exist in the state of New Jersey! After the group disbanded around 1980, the feasts continued as a type of once a year reunion. Shockingly enough, the Feast was held for 30 consecutive years. Mad Fables music was never destined for commercial acceptance. In its best years, its members’ incomes would never rise to the poverty line. But for those who were touched by it, the music burns brightly even today. According to the band, Mad Fables' music was the result of a process "that nourished and drew upon their collective experience, fusing the music with whatever emotions arose while playing. This audio alchemy unleashed an energy that enveloped those tuned to this type of frequency, and drove all to a joyful madness.” 500 copy pressing on black vinyl with insert and a back cover design (the rare original didn't have any).

Dave Tucker says that he brought this disparate group of musicians together for a live performance at London’s Cafe Oto last March on “an educated guess,” predicting that the artists—MARK Sanders (drums & percussion), PAT Thomas (piano & keys), Dave Tucker (guitar) and Thurston Moore (guitar)—would be able to create something extraordinary through improvisation. The condition of their encounter would later become the collective’s name, an Educated Guess and the eponymous title of their first release, the first installment of a two-part volume. The album is another experiment in chance: an eclectic composition of spontaneous performance, layering guitars over complex, sometimes-scattered drum arrangements, and punctuating the noise with distinctive electronic manipulation. And so, fittingly Onwards And Downwards is the occultist Swedish band ALASTOR’s clever call to arms... and also a reflection of the collective dark state of mind these days. “If our last album Slave To The Grave were about death, this record is more about madness,” says guitarist Hampus Sandell. “You can look at the whole record as one person’s gradual slip into insanity. An ongoing nightmare without end. It also sums up the state of the world around us as this year has clearly shown.” Alastor is heavy doom rock for the wicked and depraved. Drenched in heavy, distorted darkness and steeped in occult horror that will make one’s skin crawl and ears cry sweet tears of blood, the band is revitalized in 2021 with meticulously crafted songs and new drummer JIM Nordström bringing a hard-hitting and precise energy. “It’s a more focused record but at the same time it’s more personal and naked. More raw emotion and pain,” Hampus says. The band recorded the album with the help of Joona Hassinen of Studio Underjord, who has helped with mixing since their Blood On Satan’s Claw EP in 2017. Christoffer Karlsson of THE Dahmers also assisted with overdubs and encouraged the band to demo the material early on, aiding in the album’s more deliberate and tighter feel.

Pie Eye Collective has been a part of the Albert’s Favourites family for a little while, working with Hector Plimmer and Scrimshire on studio and live performances, he has also played alongside Emma-Jean Thackray and And Is Phi. Pie Eye Collective is the solo project of sound scientist and explorer Matthew Gordon. While at its heart electronica, Gordon creates an organic collage of influences and evocative noises, even drawing from jazz and soul music. Time signatures and rhythms, sometimes hard to pin down, only lead to a more hypnotic sense of being afloat in a sea of harmonics and strangely familiar musical memories. A Mountain Of One are set to return to the musical landscape with their brand new track “Custard’s Last Stand”, released 30th July through new label Amore via Above Board distribution. It is the first new piece of music the band have released in over a decade.

”Custard’s Last Stand” shows the band, made up of musical soulmates Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson, have lost nothing in the past decade. Recorded over Skype during the coronavirus pandemic, with Mo now in Bali and Zeben in west London, it is a shimmering, modern classic, experimental but accessible, melodic and adventurous. As ever, it is utterly unique, made in a musical universe all of their own.

“Custard’s Last Stand” EP is out 27th August, and will come with an incredible Denis Bovell Dub Remix, as well as another new track “Stars, Planets, Dust, Me”. The full EP package will come with a dub remix from musical pioneer Dennis Bovell.

The forthcoming album will be released this autumn. The whole project has been mastered then remixed for a forthcoming album by the legendary Ricardo Villalobos.

When they first started performing, they quickly became one of the most-acclaimed bands out there, with the likes of i-D, Sunday Times Culture, Pitchfork, NME and more raving about them and their inspired and original approach, led by Mo and Zeben’s almost telepathic understanding.

Sold-out shows and awesome reviews followed with “Collected Works” and “Institute of Joy”, two phenomenal records that have stood the test of time, criss-crossing folk, jazz, dance, rock and psychedelia.

A Mountain Of One have collaborated to create a coming together of music and virtual reality. With NYX VX, the band have developed a virtual world, one that will help provide inspired opportunities for artists looking to identify, connect and engage with audiences on multiple levels. Join The Future: UK Bleep & Bass 1988-91 is a partner product to Anniss’s critically acclaimed book on the foundations of British dance music’s ongoing love affair with sub-bass, Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music. The book, which was published by Velocity Press in December and features a foreword by JD Twitch, documents in vivid detail the previously untold story of the Yorkshire-pioneered style and the impact it had on the development of UK dance music. The compilation is the first to focus on Bleep & Bass since the sound’s heyday in the late 1980s and early ’90s. It features a mix of historic cuts, period classics, overlooked gems and unreleased material. It was mastered for release by Warp Records co-founder and Forgemasters member Rob Gordon, a producer, remixer and studio engineer who arguably did more than anyone else to define the sub-heavy sound of the style.

Dark Star Safari is a musical entity comprised of Jan Bang, Erik Honoré, Eivind Aarset, Samuel Rohrer and John Derek Bishop. Their second fulllength offering Walk Through Lightly is the first to feature all five musicians together in the studio from the outset, making for a more organic refinement upon their already established methodology: gradually sculpting distinct songs out of collective improvisations, or using the raw material from initial recordings as the basis for more carefully articulated compositions. The final mix is one that invites few stylistic comparisons to other musical peers, and in fact few comparisons to existing genres. Though this second offering from the project is frosted over with a Scandinavian sense of spatiality and melancholy, it’s best listened to without considering any origin points, geographic or otherwise: from the opening moments of “Walk Through Lightly,” listeners will feel as if teleported directly into the middle of an enigmatic film-in-progress. The album opener immediately and successfully sets the table for what is to follow. The electronic and acoustic instrumentation is pensive, but not passive, with restrained scrapes and stridulations in the background combining with backwards-looped passages and perlescent or granulated sound effects to better emphasize the carefully arranged latticework of guitar, percussion, strings, and bass.

Can Love Be Synth are in love with old analogue machines and define their specific sound in the legendary Synthesizer Studio Hamburg. A synth collectors paradise hidden behind the big grey walls of a Bunker building and the club Uebel & Gefährlich between the Reeperbahn and Schanzenviertel district in Hamburg, Germany. Their new song ‘Bunker’ is now available as a digital and vinyl release on A Clean CUT including fantastic remixes by Richard Fearless, Terr and quadratschulz. The Bunker building is currently extended with a 54-meter-high superstructure for an ultra-violent instant gentrification. In the original version of the song the heavy blows of hammers are clearly audible. This sound journey from zen to noise is a beautifully shimmering ‘black hole made from music’, where implosion and explosion energetically meet. If it needed another reason for the clubs to reopen, this song would be the one - it is perfect for long nights and for days without light rays.

Extremely rare, under the radar afro-psychedelic LP from South Africa. This mysterious band was produced by African funk master, composer, guitarist and producer Almon Sandisa Memela, who was active since the mid 1950s, first as a musician and guitar teacher and then also as a producer. He is famous for his 1970s Afro funk works Funky Africa and the very sought after Broken Shoes.

Action features a cool mixture of incipient afro-funk and garage pop/psych, with one of its songs having been compiled on the famous Next Stop... Soweto compilation series that helped ignite the current fever for African music.

Although this amazing U.S. popsike gem seems to have remained under the radar since it was first released in 1969, copies of an original pressing of this LP fetch several hundreds of dollars among the small circle of collectors that have managed to discover the amazing works of Don Beckmann and David Rea.

Their only LP was originally released on their hometown Denver’s Stylist Records label back in 1969. The production is amazing: to the strength of the duo’s compositions and their guitar and vocal talents, a complete band is added, plus impressive orchestrated arrangements with scores provided by Dan Goodman and Mark Schuster and conducted by Ben Kaufman, the result being a deliciously beautiful album that could be a missing link between the works of Simon & Garfunkel and those of soft pop maestros like The Free Design or Harper's Bizarre or baroque pop legends The Left Banke.

Kënnlisch, one of the rarest haunting psychedelic acid folk LPs from France, was the work of brothers Philippe and Jean-François Macherey.

Originally released in 1976 on the mega collectable label Le Kiosque d'Orphée, it contains some of the most beautiful sounds to come out of the 1970s alternative music scene.

An instrumental album, it opens with a burst of sunshine vibes and takes them into the experimental scene of French alternative folk avantgarde with a strong Cosmische influence. Beauty is the word, grown over acoustic guitar parts harmonised with the most elegant Moog Satellite lines you'll ever hear to create atmospheres of sound that make this is the perfect record for your mind to float away on a peaceful Sunday morning under a clear blue sky - it does have that therapeutic quality that we miss so much in modern music.

Wah Wah presents the very first official reissue of this mega rare LP, housed in it's original minimalist hand made artwork with the little upgrade twist of silk-screen printing and including a 4-page colour booklet with photos and text provided by the Macherey brothers themselves.
