A key player in the New York scene and boss of her own Dusk & Haze label, it was Francis Harris’ Kingdoms that initially released Sophie Saze’s standout two-part album, and that is where this forward looking package of highly original remixes lands. First up is German artist Roman Flügel, who’s responsible for a myriad of musical aliases and just as many different sounds. Here he is in experimental electronic mode and reworks ‘Cure’ into an elongated groove with twisted synth lines layering up over the shimmer, shadowy beats. It’s a ghoulish track with a creepy atmosphere. Swede Anthony Linell makes tripped out, heady techno on Northern Electronics, always with a stylish aesthetic. That continues here as he reimagines ‘Aliens’ as an absorbing cosmic soundtrack. Supple, rubbery drums bubble down low while broad pads and astral motifs colour the airways above and sink you into a state of trance. New York beat maker and Blueberry Records boss FaltyDL then steps up with a remix of ‘Self’. It is a typically off-kilter groove that seems to float on post-jungle drums while distant synth details make for a dreamy atmosphere. Closing out this killer package is Saze’s original track ‘Dreams’, an intense techno cut where coarse textures peel off the industrial clatter of the drums.

In collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist Rdo/atk, Sophia Saze makes her long-awaited return to her Dusk & Haze imprint with four slamming cuts on a release entitled ‘Stalker’. Born in Tbilisi and now residing in Philadelphia after years living a nomadic lifestyle, Sophia Saze began her creative journey in her formative years with classical music and dance training. With a solid and natural musical foundation, Sophia became engulfed by electronic music leading to the launch of her Dusk & Haze imprint in 2017, before dropping a remix of Heathered Pearls on Ghostly International and the release of her much lauded debut album on Kingdoms. ‘Stalker’ sees her team up with old friend Rdo/atk who has been soaking up the dancefloor since the early 90s. With much of his influence stemming from the early east coast rave and club scene, his sound maintains a homage to the past without getting stuck in it. A sucker for a dirty 303, a breakneck amen, or a crushed 909, Rdo/atk’s style spans across genres from jungle to acid to broken beat and everything in-between. The EP kicks off with a dynamic, jungle roller entitled ‘Stalker’ featuring old-school, amen breaks, stirring yet intriguing synths and hefty bass shatters balancing styles of glitch and funk together with pure class whilst ‘Fucking Crazy B’ lays focus on cold, syncopated grooves, chopped up shrieks and screams from a video of a traumatic personal incident and shimmering pads moving into ominous territories. On the flip, ‘Talk To You In Your Brain’ delivers relentless kicks and spiralling acid squelches peppered with chilling vocal samples and frazzled fx that pulsates strikingly throughout until ‘Acid B’ rounds off proceedings with an effervescent, warehouse techno cut as the electrifying modulations bounce gracefully off the menacing percussion and slashing, 303 tones.

An iconic Canadian media figure, Sook-Yin Lee is an award-winning filmmaker, musician, actor, visual artist and broadcaster who has immersed herself in myriad creative collaborations. Many of them were made with her life partner and frequent co-creator Adam Litovitz, including their 2015 ethereal electroacoustic album jooj. Though Litovitz passed away in 2019, his work with Lee lives on with jooj two, an unapologetic dive into playful art-pop and a document of a lost language between lovers. While financial difficulties and external pressures contributed to the end of their romantic relationship, Lee and Litovitz remained best friends and creative partners. As he was busy with a soundtrack for Netflix, Litovitz gave Lee his blessing to continue working on their second album without him. Increasingly, Litovitz struggled with anxiety and depression, compounded by a prescription drug dependency that exacerbated insomnia and pain. Tragically, he died by suicide June 16, 2019. Litovitz’s passing was a profound loss for Lee and so many who loved him. Lee saw pieces of his irrepressible spirit—as well as the story of their relationship—contained within the music they had recorded for jooj two and was determined to share it with the world. With the assistance of mixer Steve Chahley (U.S. Girls, Badge Époque Ensemble, Darlene Shrugg), Lee completed this album and will share it with the world this spring. There is an intentionality and inherent uniqueness to jooj two’s songwriting approach that first took shape by Lee responding to a musical phrase with vocal melodies and stream of consciousness lyrics. Those experiments were transcribed and delightfully interpreted by Litovitz, then returned to Lee for finessing. The resulting wordplay across eleven enigmatic and accessible tracks evokes the feeling of a new language being born.

14 million streams ago...God, where to start? We formed in the late-70s to play a special Mass for the Bishop at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brooklyn. Most of us met for the first time while rehearsing for that Mass and decided to keep in touch. We realized that Catholics (we were all Roman Catholics at the time) had nowhere to go to hear fun, inspirational music, so we began playing church halls and schools doing "rocked-up" versions of songs we pulled out of hymnals. Eventually some of us wrote our own stuff. We played hundreds of shows over the next 4 years, passing the hat for donations to pay for necessities that we needed to keep the group going (microphones, wires, gas for the van, and eventually, the "First Fruit" album, which we sold at concerts for just about cost). It was never about the money; it was all about spreading the Good News and having fun doing it. We consistently lost members through the years and gave our last concert in December 1983. Doug Prinzivalli, who owned a video copy of our appearance on a local TV show sometime in 1982, had been running "where are they now" (or more specifically, "who are they") contests on his California blog for years. It wasn't until he got his hands on a copy of the album (which is amazing considering we only printed 1,000 or so) that he found my name and tracked me down. Sons of Viljems are a London based duo, comprised of Andrea Giommi (Guitar, Vocals) and Nejc Haberman (Bass, Synth). With a measured pace in a world of relentless acceleration, they have released six carefully crafted songs over five years on Sas Recordings and Fang Bomb Records. In contrast to bulk editing and standardisation, Sons of Viljems meticulously chisel every song to its last detail. After years of concerts, collaborations, and sporadic releases, the band has now curated 42 minutes of music for their debut full-length album ‘Lithospheric Melodies’. Sons Of Slum released three singles on Stax and Gamma in the 1970s. They were reputed to be Chicago's finest live band of their time, the band broke up in 1978. 'Music Is Message' is a high octane funk and soul crossover jam which which has the potential to be a future classic. On the flip the tempo is lowered and a rasping horn supplements the killer groove with a smoothing vocal delivery. Cordial Recordings will release an album of previously unreleased songs that were recorded back in the mid 1970s in 2019.

Sons of Sevilla are blood brothers Henry and Reuben Smith who hail from Featherstone in the North of England. Sons of Sevilla began in 2020 during lockdown by chance. At the time, Reuben was working on solo material for his second album with Soundway Records. When Henry visited Reuben at his home studio to play guitar on his record, one afternoon they wrote a couple of songs. Liking the sound and vibe of the tracks, they began writing and recording every day for the entire summer that was inspired by JJ Cale and a lifetime of the music they had heard growing up in their family pubs over the years. Henry takes care of business on guitar and bass, while brother Reuben steers the vocals and dazzles with thoughtful key work. Their sound is inspired by early 70s records like JJ Cales Naturally & Nino Ferrers record with Radiah Et Le Sud, and Neil Young's Harvest Moon and these references are evident throughout their opening effort. Their highly anticipated debut album, Lullabies For A Wildcat, is a collection of tracks recorded at their family home in the summer of 2020. Shades of 70s psychedelia echo throughout, with tripped out layered vocals building a vibration that seems way beyond their years, like a hazy hedonistic cloud of smoke in surround sound.

"Ya Oughta Know" should have been the title of the debut album of Sons Of Sam, the Philly-based duo comprised of The Xav and PA-Kid. Here we have a collection of 12 tracks recorded between 1993 to 1994 plus the bonus track "Glass Eyes" from 1996.

Going back in time, Xav says "The Sons Of Sam title is not what it seems. Everybody thought we were modeling ourselves after Charles Manson the mass murderer of the 70's. Actually, the truth is that we are brothers who have a father named Sam. Easy as that. But we do manage to murder the mic from time to time and an appropriate name would have been the Mic Manglers. We did our own tracks when we worked as individuals but when we were both on tracks together PA-Kid originally did the tracks. He could make any track fit both of our styles and if it didn't fit I would usually adapt to the style of the track. PA-Kid's original name was Samson and i was called Xay. That was given to my by a fellow MC named Manifest in 1986 when i was his DJ. I started writing more and began recording my own tracks."

Sons of Apollo is an American progressive metal supergroup formed in 2017 and composed of drummer Mike Portnoy, bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, and guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal.‘So there is no doubt that here are musicians who are all among the best on their instruments (and vocals). And on this album they try their hardest to rise above the rest. Great drum parts, bombastic bass solos, impressive guitar parts and fabulous keyboard work. Formed in Oakland in the early 1970s, the Sons and Daughters of Lite recorded Let The Sun Shine In, their only LP, which has now achieved holy grail status among collectors. Let The Sun Shine In is a spiritual recording filled with soul, funk, jazz, and African percussion. The musical collective described themselves as a mix of African rhythms, Latin flavors, and Far Eastern textures. This album was virtually unknown to DJs and collectors until Michael McFadin's discovery in the late 80s. He then scoured the bay area and bought up multiple copies for his record store The Groove Merchant on Haight Street in San Francisco, many of which were bought from flea markets and the dollar bins of other shops. The outrageously funky title track became a jazz dance classic, courtesy of heavy radio and club play by top UK DJ and tastemaker Gilles Peterson.

La Sonora Mazuren is the latest addition to the already rich indie-tropical scene out of Bogotá, Colombia. Deeply rooted in the popular sounds and rhythms of South America, the group draws from cumbia, chicha, guaracha, champeta and other styles mostly from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru.

Far from being revivalists or folklorists, the group combines synthesizers and electric guitars with accordion and percussion to create a style indebted to early pioneers such as Polibio Mayorga or Bogota’s own Eblis Alvarez, of Meridian Brothers fame, who also produced their new album. The result is a psychedelic feast reminiscent of the golden years of tropicalia.
