The first release of the Apolo records label marks the grand debut of the Scienza X duo composed by Portuguese talents Nuno Carneiro and Rowan. First word of advice: don’t be fooled by the debut stamp, Rowan is a celebrated producer and Nuno has been doing the rounds behind the wheels of steel from Europe to Latin America for a long, long time, and this is clear from the outset. Both “Evil Laugh” and “17” have their distinct identities. The first track harnesses an energy not far from the sounds of Uruguay made popular by artists like Z@P, Nicholas Lutz and DJ Koolt. As for 17, it’s certainly no filler, either a reflective opener or a closer to entwine the audience (this is a dance record!) on their way out of an early morning in Café Barges or Ibiza. The mixes are a blessing overall for the record, each adding layers and use cases that make this a something of a buy-on-sight tool. From Dan Ghenacia’s full on dancefloor-driven interpretation of 17 to Snad’s thumping version of Evil Laugh to Wareika’s… well… how do you describe his sound? If you know, you know. This debut on the label named after his first son was conceived with a lot of work, lets just hope that if he’s going to father any more projects in the future, they sound this good.

The Scientists’ pre-Swampland days in Perth are brilliantly encapsulated on this collection of mostly unreleased live material from ’78 and ‘79. These were the days when former Victims and future Hoodoo Gurus drummer James Baker led the band alongside guitarist/singer Kim Salmon, and when their poster read “Rock ‘n’ Roll in the tradition of The Groovies and The Heartbreakers”. The Perth-based line-up recorded the brilliant “Frantic Romantic” single and self-titled EP highlighted by “Last Night.” They also recorded a posthumously released LP—the “pink album”—which came as a massive disappointment due to bad production and a reduced line-up. Not For Sale: Live’ 78/79 is a collection of live and rehearsal tracks that captures the band making the same noises as on those 45s, and presents live versions of the fan faves and vastly superior versions of most of the LP tracks as well as coughing up a bunch of hitherto unreleased originals and covers to boot. This is “The Legendary Scientists”—as they were dubbing themselves within months of forming—as they should be heard.
The main set comes from late 1979: a live-to-air broadcast from Melbourne’s 3RRR. The same line-up is also present on a handful of primitive live recordings, made by a friend at one of the group’s regular haunts, the Governor Broome Hotel in ‘79. Play this really loud and it sounds like right there in the pub, shitty PA and all. Packaged with rare and unseen images, an original 1979 Roadrunner magazine feature by Kim Williams (of the Summer Suns, and co-writer of Swampland) and additional notes by Grown Up Wrong’s Dave Laing. This collection provides a thrilling glimpse into what an album by the “Legendary” Scientists might’ve sounded like if it had been recorded in 1979. With the current incarnation of the band touring the US again and performing the likes of “Last Night” and “Frantic Romantic”, this is an essential listen for all Scientists fans, no matter which line-up they prefer.

His unique studio techniques and understanding of rhythm are exalted and present on Step It Up, an enlightening example of his genius and matched with a widescreen remix by label associate Djn4, aka DJ Normal 4, teaming up with fellow Dusseldorf producer AKI AKI, to offer a dreamland breaks-steppers anthem. The fact that Hopeton Overton Brown aka Scientist is one of the true pioneers of Dub music is undisputed. His productions, first as an apprentice at Studio One, then breaking through whilst teamed at King Tubby's studio, led to Channel One and a series of seminal Dub masterpieces throughout the 1980s, mixing engineer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes' productions with the Roots Radics, alongside vocalists Barrington Levy, Jonny Osbourne and Jah Thomas.

Step It Up precedes, taken from the period of seminal Tubby's work with Bunny Lee and in this instance, with Barry Brown classic vocals and Lee's house band, The Aggravators, backing. As often with Reggae's history, much is disputed, however, this unmistakable Scientist production showcases Brown's high pass filters in effect, the trademark riding 4/4, utilising the 4 track mixing desk to create a joyous bounce.

Working on the license from the outset, Tim Schumacher aka Djn4, waited in the wings to dive in the desk for a modern-day remix. Partnering with up-and-coming producer Aki Vierboom Phaserboys / Candomble), the Digi-Dance MixX is bass-quaking histrionics, a steppers meets rave culture overdose that will be heard from festivals to dancehalls, a righteous dub-breaks riddim y'all.

Back in 1968 a pair of Germanic behind-the-scenes sound librarians called Horst Ackermann and Heribert Thusek left a tiny, but indelible, pinprick on the history of German Pop in the misshaped form of a sexy horror cash-in concept album called Dracula’s Music Cabinet. Shelved at a micro-cosmic axis where Krautrock meets lesbian vampire Horrortica and easy listening meets psychedelia the delayed reaction of this mutant concoction eventually exploded in the mid-1990s in the hands of a generation of ‘record diggers’ sending currencycrushing tremors through the wallets of mods, rockers, hip hoppers, psych nuts and kraut kompletists around the plastic-pillaging planet. The vinyl junkies had resurrected a monster, but, like addicts do, they ravenously sucked it dry and moved on looking for the next fix to feed their habit. Luckily for some, Ackermann and Thusek were also creatures of habit. And it wouldn’t take a genius to figure out that they were holding the next dose, but by the turn of the millennium the mad scientists had been given a thirty-five-year head start on the pop archeologists and their mythical sequel was literally light-years ahead of their previous draconian installment... Encouragingly the unclosed cabinet left a shiny white clue in the form of it’s closing track Frankenstein Meets Alpha 7... Perhaps space was the place. Always read the label. The Ackermann and Thusek duo were far from dynamic. They were undercover agents hiding behind user-friendly mock-rock monikers and, like most B-Musicians, the only way to sniff them out would be to read the small print. But when an unidentified record on an unknown label with a title like Science Fiction Dance Partycrops up in the Eins Deutschmark crates it’s not exactly rocket science - although the track titles might suggest otherwise. The End Of A Robot, Monster On Saturn 1, Galactic Adventures Of The Outer Space Fleet , The Whistling Astronauts, Death Rays Out Of The Universe’.. The telltale signs are all there and if that vintage psycoplasmodic Colored Vinyl doesn’t clench the deal then what will. This track wants a different language than that of the warriors and their dashing battle ministers. The music is manic-Prussian Sleaford Mods. In the chorus, Dutch singer Annemaaike Bakker transfigures herself as Zeus' daughter with a killer sample:

This is an album about Donald Trump - his dubious rise in politics, his capricious behaviour while in office and the motley cast of characters he has surrounded himself with. It's not exactly a protest record, though it is shot through with anger. It's definitely not a joke, though some of it is darkly funny. It is a tragedy and it is a farce. The songs are sung from different points of view, almost as if it's a Donald Trump funk musical. One advisor sells Trump on the idea of a border wall. Another one feels he can't quit because of the chaos that might follow. Rex Tillerson fumes at his plummeting status. Psychiatrists fret about the President's mental stability. Hillary Clinton laments her loss. Trump himself brags and equivocates in his own unique, blustering style. School of Language is David Brewis, who also makes music with his brother Peter as Field Music. This is the third School of Language album, following on from Sea From Shore in 2008 and Old Fears in 2014. 45 was written and recorded in a little less than two months during gaps in the schedule at Field Music's studio in Sunderland. It was inspired by Bob Woodward's book Fear, articles in the Washington Post, The New Yorker and The New York Times and by Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight. It was also inspired by James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Otis Redding and Free.

"Album no. 5?! Have we really bee n around that long?" asks Johannes Genard. "I feel like I'm only just starting t o get how it all works."

When their fourth album, 'Things That Don't Go Right' was ignominiously cut short by the pandemic in March '20, Genard turne d around and started writing the next one. "If you don't keep plodding ahead, th en you've already given up," he says. The group's subsequent plodding quickly ev olved into a collection of 13 songs infused with energy, emotion, playful exuber ance and plenty of signature School is Cool elements.

Despite the new album's name - Brittle Dream - the atmosphere within the group is better than e ver. "After Matthias Dillen, our drummer since the very beginning left the group , Niels Meukens has seamlessly slipped into the role and is now fully acclimatiz ed. It's been awe-inspiring to witness his deep musical insight firsthand, not t o mention his willingness to take on a new project in such a short timeframe," s ays Johannes. "His contribution to this album was massive!"

School is Cool's fourth - and, as it turned out, aptly named - album, 'Things That Don't Go Right' hit the airwaves in 2020. After that, things actually did start to go in the right direction for the group. And following the release of hit singles l ike 'Close' and 'On the Halfway Line', the time is ripe for a new album.
Musically, the album breaks new ground while remaining true to that unique S chool is Cool sound we all know and love.

Disposition stands as the final installment of the School Drugs , four-part full-length venture Funeral Arrangements. “I called a local funeral home to ask if the term ‘disposition’ was commonly used in the industry,” says School Drugs vocalist Josh Jurk. The director was a little surprised by the question. He said “yes” with some reservation. When I asked him why, he noted that it’s more of an insider term and derives its meaning from disposal, and the bereaved most likely wouldn’t be thrilled by the insinuation.” Opening the 7” record, “With Sympathy” admonishes the callousness of those involved

in an industry of death. Following close behind, “Feel Like Shit” is derived from a real- life conversation Josh had in therapy. The final track, “Funeral Arrangements,” reads

something like a hardcore ode to NOFX’s “The Decline”—an over 5-minute journey through various movements, tempos, and emotions.

Melbourne/Geelong quartet School Damage began as a bedroom recording project for Carolyn Hawkins (Chook Race, Parsnip) and Jake Robertson (Ausmuteants, Frowning Clouds etc). They released a cassette for Moontown Records in 2013, then were joined by Jeff Raty on drums and Dani 'Damage' Hakim on bass.
