Dying Victims Productions is proud to present the long-awaited fourth album of Germany’s Nocturnal, Serpent Death, on CD, vinyl LP and music cassette formats.

A veritable institution, Nocturnal have been flying the flag of hate and inciting a riot of violence since the year 2000. Helmed by founding guitarist Avenger (whose other credits are far too vast to list here), Nocturnal set about their prolific course with a flurry of demo tapes and splits with the likes of Nunslaughter, Vomitor, Bestial Mockery, and Toxic Holocaust among others, all culminating in their momentous Arrival of the Carnivore debut album in 2005. Back then, hailing the old Teutonic gods of thrash – namely the “Big Three” of Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction, but not withstanding Deathrow, Assassin, Exumer, Darkness, Violent Force, and Necronomicon as well as Razor and early Sepultura abroad – was rather unfashionable, but it was Nocturnal who had the last laugh, as the second worldwide thrash resurgence was about to begin, and there they stood, undaunted and defiant.

Thereafter, Nocturnal continued to honor the old underground ways with another flurry splits and vinyl EPs, before second LP Violent Revenge arrived in 2009. Thus far, Nocturnal’s albums were more finely honed and better-produced expressions of those prolific UG releases, and they kept apace with that schematic through the release of their third LP, Storming Evil, in 2014. By then, lineup troubles had begun to plague the band and slow their momentum, and thereafter was all quiet on the Western front. But at long last, the ultimate revenge arrives with Serpent Death!

For this release Ellende was a core of three original members plus a guest musician. The album was recorded between May to August 2020 in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Tokyo, and London. The release contains a twelve page booklet with artwork by Richard Hart. The autobiographical text in English and Afrikaans is of a trip taken to Cape Town in the mid 1970’s where two teenage cousins are confronted with the consequences of their shared family history. The music can be described as ambient; the sounds are multilayered, often a bit dusty and slow moving. Some of the tracks sound like they have been recorded on old tapes giving the whole album a nostalgic atmosphere. Often a piano acts as the leitmotif, there is plenty of droning and throughout the tracks bits of texts from old French movies float in and out. Most of the music is made with vintage analogue synthesisers such as the Arp Solina, Prophet 5, ARP Solus, Juno 6. Most of the piano’s, Rhodes and Wurlizters are from the late 70’s as well. All the tracks have been recorded on tape, often played back on half speed. Mastering again was done by Rafael Irissari, whose own ambient work we greatly admire. Unintentional Consequences is the second part of a trilogy of which Ellende’s previous release the double 10” album Odyssey, A Sentimental Journey from 2019 was part one.

Originally released in 1989, it is the first time that the album has been reissued on vinyl and we do it in a wonderful remastered edition that also includes two bonus tracks - the two songs that came out on compilation cassette No. 92, also released in 1989 by El Lokal. -. The third installment of our "Instrumental Gems" compilations is finally out, focused on discovering treasures of instrumental music recorded in Spain during the 60s and 70s. Those were years when a significant number of orchestras and dance ensembles proliferated in Spain, most of which barely managed to press their songs on vinyl, but if we look deeper into the catalog of small labels of the time or self-released singles, we find pieces of undoubted quality. Many did not have a commercial course since the orchestras used them basically on a promotional level to get concerts or generate copyright, and it is for this reason that they are so hard to find for collectors of the genre. Most authors opted for pasodoble, swing, groove and Spanish soul, being bossa nova a genre less used in their compositions. The purpose of this compilation is to highlight a hidden treasure among those wonderful EPs, instrumental jewels that drink from the simplicity of bossa, to flirt with hotter rhythms close to Latin jazz, an explosive mix hidden in the 14 cuts of the LP.

On March 2020 the world was abruptly thrown into collective disarray. The Pandemic stopped almost everything dead in its tracks. An industry that had become so dependent on human connection and unity, was suddenly switched off and put on pause for an unforeseeable future.

It was in this climate that The Louder Than Chaos project was born, facilitated by Soma Records head honchos and techno protagonists Slam. A collaborative project with friends, colleagues and contemporaries normally only seen at airports, or events, now brought together under a completely different set of circumstances, allowing for a purposeful connection in a time of disconnect. The focus of the project is built on a powerful mutual participation, remotely constructed over time and fully intended for holding court on peak time dance floors when they inevitably return. That time has now finally come.

The Louder Than Chaos project is a series of 5 releases, on 12 vinyl" & Digital, to be released monthly via Soma Records. Featuring collaborations between Slam & Hector Oaks, Slam & 999999999 Slam & Keith Tucker (aka Optic Nerve), + more to follow.

Garage made with real tears. The second half of the record showcases Stones Taro’s knack for jungle. Classic R&B samples are intertwined with stripped back breaks and dubbed-out basslines on ‘Spend The Night’ to create a vibe similar to that championed by Ghost Phone, with their distinct reshaping of 90’s R&B through a contemporary lens. ‘Change The Mood’ sees us out with a score that wouldn’t sound out of place reverberating off the walls of a NYC underground as a busking drummer uses what he has to create a mood; a beauty lying within its careful repetition.

Pressure is the D.O.A. of some and the D.N.A. of others. For The Du-Rites, it's the latter. Pressure ain’t nothin’ but potassium!

Jay Mumford f/k/a “J-Zone” (drums, keyboards, percussion) and Pablo Martin (guitar, bass, keyboards) used the feared ‘P’ as both the impetus behind and the title of their sixth and most musically adventurous release. Coming off 2020’s A Funky Bad Time LP, how would the NYC-based funk unit follow up in a world where music fans hope live shows return (but not really), want songs instead of an avalanche of 60 second clips to scroll past (but not really) and a lapse back into lockdown never seems far off? And not only follow up, but not repeat? Add vinyl pressing plants offering turnaround as long as nine months and tour plans almost always in pencil, pressure for musicians to write and record almost impossibly fast or be doomed to the algorithm black hole is pumping. The odds are stacked, but odds make us turn corners.

Pressure is half the length but twice the density of its predecessors. Six tracks deep on wax (seven digitally), it’s more orchestrated, a bit more complex, but never, ever sacrificing grease and groove for academia. The hip-hop-and-dub-meet-funk of their 2016 debut; the ‘60s soul nod of 2017’s Greasy Listening; the cinematic "cop show funk" of 2018’s Gamma Ray Jones and the darker psychedelia of A Funky Bad Time - none reappear on Pressure. A subtle jazz leaning is there, but it’s busted and unrefined in a way only The Du-Rites would du. The title track and “Bird Brain” go there. Main single, “The Squeeze,” puts Italian Soundtrack-style vocals and strings in the mix with drippy guitar, reggae influence, Barry White-style ad-libbing and groove drumming for the most distinct and lush tune in the band’s catalog. “Brother Yizar” goes full-on park jam on a percussive, uptempo rampage and the closer, “Fly Swatter,” swings hard with whirling dervish Hammond organ and walking basslines. The mockingly-titled “Math Rock” is the closest thing to any previous Du-Rites, but the wild twists and turns are uncharted territory.

In an ever-uncertain musical landscape, Pressure is The Du-Rites finding a way. Like they always du. But du-in it differently. Live and/or on wax, The Du-Rites have played alongside the likes of Eddie Palmieri, Robert Glasper, Ghostface Killah, Wax Tailor, The Skatalites and members of Sun Ra Arkestra. Individually, Jay and Pablo, as drummer and guitarist, respectively, have worked with Danger Mouse, Lord Finesse, Madlib, Tom Tom Club, Broken Bells, Soul Supreme, Ben Pirani and many more.

Described by Swiss press as an “inventive genius marked by total unpredictability,” Roger Baudet’s music has preserved its freshness and spontaneity. Provoking feelings of surprise, anxiety and subjugation, he ends up bewitching you completely through his bizarre non-conformity. The oddity of the sounds is a choice of heterogeneity: the works gathered, although coming from one person, have little to do with each other. Forming a mosaic that provides a fragmented vision of atmospheres without apparent links, his music multiplies diverse rhythms and combinations, rejecting any principle of hierarchy in the musicality of the moment. The decorative music was composed as the soundtrack for theatre and ballet performances, documentaries, short films and exhibitions of paintings – a context that inevitably shines through the twenty-two pieces. Despite these classical settings, the music had a forward-facing, futuristic cadence – a precursor to the electronic genres that would later become techno or trance. This compilation from the past century is a collage of ornaments made out of sounds; stripped down, yet undoubtedly imbued with sensitivity, with hints of classical training, all suitable for contemplation.

South African born, London based producer Kai van Dongen follows up two killer releases on 1Ø Pills Mate and Ei8ht Records with a massive four tracker on Cyberdome spanning lo-fi electro, gabber-influenced techno and Detroit acid.

‘Command’ gets started with the typical Cyber-aesthetic; a bruising, otherworldly electro cut that sounds like it was sampled from an intergalactic star-ship battle on a galaxy not so distant. Spooky, raw and uncompromising - classic horror synth lines creating a haunting atmosphere before its pulsating rhythm brings the listener back down to earth. ‘Losing Power’ again makes use of Kai’s knack for crafting emotionally captivating synth patterns, but this time under a lo-fi identity with hefty influence from the synthwave golden era; neon shapes and patterns blooming in the night as we continue our journey into darkness.

What sounds like an angry swarm of bees approaches on ‘Body Moving’ - a track title fit for purpose. Face-melting, brain-spinning techno creates a dark, psychedelic environment where sweat drips from the ceiling and faces react with a blend of euphoria and disgust, before we head to the Motor City on ‘Breathe’ - a cut of acid techno-electro that borrows from the icons of the past for a typically punchy and raw experience.

The Belfast based producer has built a reputation as one of the most forward thinking, genre-merging artists on the island, combining his love for techno, breaks and garage into a growing palette of sonic decompression. Now the Belfast hit-man steps up with another exploration of deconstructed techno, screw-face bass and otherwise unknown substances not fit for human consumption.

Opener ‘Binmen Of The Apocalypse’ features a heavy drum-work perfect for peak-time and the type of bassline that lights a fire under any dance-floor; while ‘E-Machine’ adds swing with it’s killer low-end, bouncing between tenacious beats and choppy vocoder samples. Wrapping up the A-side is ‘I Am the Creator’ a signature Carlton Doom track with it’s weighty kick-drums and uncompromising structure, bulldozing it’s way through your speakers.

Lightning Love, a band consisting of siblings Leah and Aaron Diehl and friend Ben Collins, delivers a cheery indie-pop sound flavored with sugary sweet keyboard-driven arrangements and underscored by heart-on-sleeve honesty. Their self-released debut album, November Birthday (2009), leveraged Leah’s compelling vocals and themes of tackling the challenges of newfound adulthood and is sure to appeal to fans of Mates of State, Alvvays, Spoon, and Belle and Sebastian.

All Music Guide wrote at the time, “[November Birthday] was a collection of bright, enthusiastic and minimally arranged indie-pop coupled with dour, neurotic lyrics that swung from ironically witty to the borderline cry-for-help territory. The underlying despair of the album was easily outshined by the band’s gift for hooks and straightforward melodies proud to be uncluttered and classically streamlined, even if they were supporting lyrics about falling-down drunkenness or not wanting to leave the house.”

Lightning Love signed to Quite Scientific in 2011 and released a sophomore album Blonde Album to wider critical acclaim including glowing reviews in Paste, Vice, Under the Radar and My Old Kentucky Blog, and was featured on NPR’s World Cafe. Guitarist Collins went on to lead the Detroit group Minihorse (Park the Van Records) and has recorded with and produced for many bands, including Anna Burch (Polyvinyl). Lightning Love was a finalist in Billboard magazine’s 2011 Battle of the Bands and has been featured on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” and in a number of movies.

The band has toured with The Von Bondies, Jamaican Queens, and Tally Hall. They have also shared the stage with such notable acts as The High Strung, Walk the Moon, Mayer Hawthorne, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Lightning Love has performed at SXSW, Midpoint Music Fest, Mitten Fest, CMJ, and Daytrotter Session.

November Birthday is a cherished release to the band and their biggest fans and Lost in Ohio is pleased to be re-releasing the album for the first time ever on vinyl. Collateral Intelligence's Butterflies in Funerals is widescreen, sometimes dark, often hopeful electronica with one eye on the stars, but grounded in the sheer cathartic necessity of its creation.

The new moniker from Maltese wunderkind Neil "Acidulant" Hales, the album was formed during a turbulent period in the artist's life, when his father was seriously ill in hospital. Butterflies in Funerals is his way of expressing the complexity of emotion he was going through at the time.

"To me it all looked like a very dark movie," he says. "That's why the tracks are are at times cold or have a sad, emotional, or hopeful feeling."

Drawing on his impressive background in acid house and electro – with releases on Balkan Vinyl and Jack Trax – the album takes in mutant breakbeat, battle-scarred ambient, and tripped out 303 grooves, but pushes his sound further and deeper than ever before.

The album cover features specially designed artwork by rising star Fei Meng, who will be exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists later this year.

To say the release of this EP's tracks is long-awaited would be a terribly gross understatement, so it's with much fanfare and general HQ excitement that we announce the sophomore release from the monstrously talented Ross From Friends.

Having been circulating on the net for a fair while now, 'Talk To Me You'll Understand' finally arrives with a fresh mastering, but still thudding along with those scuffed Reebok drums and soaked into fuzzy, stomach-squeezing low-pass filter. All soft chords, soothing vocals, deep-sea bass and skittering hats.

Middle-man 'Gettin' It Done' is a solid label favourite. Less the full vocal flourishes and more the tinkered & chopped MPC underpinned by more dusty drum work that just grows in impact as the track goes on. One for late running and early morning truckin'.

Last but not least comes the R'n'B-inflicted house jam 'Bootman'. Although it takes a good couple of minutes to get going, this is pure 2016 date playlist vibes. Dario Argento’s ‘opera prima’ ‘L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo’ was premiered in 1970 and marked an historical and revolutionary debut, being a truly original and innovative thriller. The stylistic choices of Argento mark a clear step forward from the thrillers of that era and even the soundtrack was something utterly special.

Argento assigned the score to Ennio Morricone, composer of the soundtracks for ‘Comandamenti per un gangster’, ‘C’era una volta il west’, ‘Metti, una sera a cena’ ‘Un esercito di 5 uomini’ and ‘La stagione dei sensi’, which Argento had already written the screenplay of. For this movie the maestro adopted a particular style that draws heavily on contemporary music and on the studies of his Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. With ‘L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo’ Morricone develops this approach and defines a 'formula': he alternates traditional songs, built around an easy and immediate melody used as a leitmotiv, with avant-garde and abstract tracks that amplify the state of uneasiness and fear of the viewers of tension and violence sequences.

Cinevox released this soundtrack on an LP with 10 tracks in the spring of 1971 when ‘Il gatto a nove code’ was already a big hit in the Italian cinemas. The record was originally issued in mono, with different tracks from the Stereo US version. This is the first vinyl reissue featuring the original score in Stereo, enclosed in a brand new artwork made by Adventprod studios!

The Milan based imprint, Dialogo, returns with the first ever vinyl reissue of Spirale’s lone 1974 self-titled LP. Resting at a fascinating juncture between progressive and free jazz, it was years ahead of its time when it first appeared, rendering it to the shadows for decades, before its ultimate ascent to becoming one of the great holy grails of Italian Jazz prog.

This is a release known mostly by Italian progressive rock lovers, since its sound can be easily associated to the jazz-rock delivered by the way more popular Napoli Centrale and Perigeo - but also to the ‘fundamentals’ Dedalus, Arti & Mestieri, Uno, if not Maad, Nadma or Aktuala, or even the lesser known Bauhaus for instance. But playing this kind of music and trying to release an album in the first half of the ’70s in Italy was also incredibly hard and courageous: Spirale, in fact, was one of the many bands that lived a very short life, before splitting up and disappear forever.

Spirale were an Italian quintet from Rome, consisting of Gaetano Delfini (wind instruments, vocals, percussion), Giancarlo Maurino (saxophone, flute, percussion), Corrado Nofri (piano, marimba, mbira, siren, Jew’s harp), Giuseppe Caporello (contrabass, guitar, percussion) and Giampaolo Ascolese (drums) who released a single eponymous album in 1974.

Spirale was originally released on the International King record label, thanks to Mario Schiano, a free-jazz saxophonist who discovered the band, and producer Toni Cosenza, who included the album in the ‘King Jazz-Line’ series. Consisting of just four tracks, most of which taken by the 13-minute long “Cabral, Anno 1” and the marvellous 17-minute “Peperoncino (Cose vecchie, cose nuove)”, Spirale is an incredibly balanced and flowing record that sounds still fresh and inspired even today, and it’s a shame that it has remained hidden and overlooked for such a long time. Moreover, it is characterized by that undescribable and particular Mediterranean flavour that only Italian musicians were able to obtain. This beautiful album is of course immensely rare in its original edition, and is now finally reissued on Dialogo record label in a faithful restored version that will satisfy any collectors who have waited for years for this beauty to see the light again!

First ever vinyl edition of "Zeder" soundtrack, one of the best Italian thriller/horror movies ever!

The music composer is Riz Ortolani ("Mondo Cane" and "Cannibal Holocaust" stand out among his many works), here collaborating with director Pupi Avati for the second time: this soundtrack expertly blends electronic and symphonic music, the latter here consisting mainly of an orchestral string section often repetitive, hypnotic and insistent, that reflects the arrogance of the protagonist in continuing his research, no matter what the consequences could be. There is no shortage of funk-filled brighter themes and requiems, suspended songs full of tension and sudden vibe changes, melancholic melodies and eerie soundscapes.

"Zeder" is today a cult movie, released in theaters in 1983, at a time when hardly anyone dared to shoot anything that had to do with zombies. Pupi Avati went against the tide then, giving life to an atmospheric horror film set in a sunny Italian Romagna Riviera - a typical destination for cheerful summer holidays - which tells the discovery of ancient experiments by researcher Paolo Zeder on a special 'K terrain' that allow those buried there to return from beyond. Avati's stylistic approach, in which tension and fear arise from simply narrated situations instead of full-blooded scenes with a strong visual impact, finds here a perfect match with Maestro Riz Ortolani's score.

Molly Burch Was Exposed To The Arts At An Early Age. Following nearly two years of global touring in support of their adventurous and acclaimed album, The Wilderness (2016), Explosions In The Sky paused on the future to reflect on the past. Celebrating their 20th year as a band with a pair of remastered reissues of early beloved classics - How Strange, Innocence (2000) and The Rescue (2005) - they embarked on a memorable series of anniversary concerts in 2019. It was around then that Explosions In The Sky was approached to craft the score to a new documentary about a place with which, as native Texans, they were very familiar: Big Bend National Park. That documentary, Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas, premiered on PBS in the United States as well as on a variety of networks in other countries in early 2021. The hour-long film intimately follows the lives of native animals amid expansive aerial views of the iconic desert landscape that makes up one of the grandest natural wonders in the world. The band set these sights to an inspired, melodic, and meaningful blend of acoustic guitar, slide guitar, strings, piano, bells, and drums that feels as alive and diverse - and vast and lonely -as the place it depicts. Big Bend (An Original Soundtrack for Public Television) takes that mesmerizing score and recontextualizes it as a standalone album. Those brief cues have been expanded and transformed into a thoughtful, gorgeous full-length album that recalls some of the band's most magical and memorable moments from their storied history. Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas is a film that explores the past and present of the vast, complicated landscape that still holds countless mysteries yet to be uncovered. In Big Bend (An Original Soundtrack for Public Television), Explosions In The Sky pursue a similar approach to their own past and present, and find inspiration in all that has yet to be discovered.
