Vetiver grows in a “less is more” chaparral where simplicity offers ample room to wander. Strongly fertilized by traditional acoustic music, and more subtly cross-pollinated by the sparseness of “minimalism,” with its bare suggestions of melodies that the listener fills in for himself, Vetiver gracefully navigates folk and pop savannas with ease. Chief songwriter Andy Cabic grew up in northern Virginia and spent a few years in Greensboro, North Carolina, playing guitar and writing music as a member of the Raymond Brake, whose 1995 full-length, Piles of Dirty Winters (Simple Machines), melded experimental rock sensibilities with bright melodic touches of classic pop. After moving to San Francisco, Cabic enlisted violinist Jim Gaylord and cellist Alissa Anderson, along with Young God recording artist and troubadour du jour Devendra Banhart, who shares co-writing credits on “Los Pajaros del Rio” and “Amour Fou” and contributes guitar and vocals to the album. Anderson made the near-random acquaintance of My Bloody Valentine’s Colm O’Ciosoig, and he ended up playing drums on “Luna Sea” and “On a Nerve,” which brought along with it vocals on “Angels’ Share” courtesy of Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval. “Amerilie” features the harp-playing of Joanna Newsom, Craig Koozer plays bass on “Amour Fou,” and Nick Holdzkom piano on “Luna Sea.” The album was recorded whenever and where ever possible — including various living rooms throughout the Bay Area — by Tom Monahan, who squeezed in production duties around Pernice Bros. tour obligations, sometimes working on mixes on his laptop and sending them to Cabic from the road.

The third, self-titled, album from Portico Quartet was originally released on 30 January 2012 and saw the band embracing new sonic territories. This 10th anniversary re-release sees the album newly remastered for vinyl and cut across three sides by John Davis at Metropolis (the fourth side is an etching). It also sees the track ‘Laker Boo’ added to the vinyl release for the first time.

The album features new artwork from the band’s Duncan Bellamy. The LP comes with a hi-res download code for the full album plus previously unreleased tracks exclusive to the download voucher. The LP jackets are embossed with silver foiled and include a 12-page 12” booklet of black and white photography from the recording period [sessions?]. The CD digipak includes a 12-page booklet of photography, and a foil-printed O-card.

The album draws on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical and dance music as the band take their beautiful, cinematic, future music to exciting new vistas where the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus rubs shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver with echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter. All tracks are underpinned by a shared joy in collective music making as the band push their inimitable music into the future.

Produced by the band themselves and originally engineered brilliantly by Greg Freeman at Fish Market studios and Real World, Portico Quartet’s eponymous third album is the sound of a band that refuses to stand still. Black and White Vinyl.Zach Saginaw consistently grounds his music in a deeply personal, familial context; his grandmother inspired two releases, his producer aliases, Shigeto and Frank Omura, both reference family names and it's not for nothing that his latest release as Shigeto is titled Lineage.While only Saginaw could speak to the ancestral motivation being referenced on the eight instrumental songs that comprise the mini-LP, Lineage, it's easy to see it as an acknowledgement of debt to musical forebears, reverent respect due to the jazz, hip-hop, funk and folk that animates these eight songs. And while these elements aren't new to Saginaw's work, never has he demonstrated such complete command of his material. Each song is a complex constellation of sounds and ideas, but his compositional focus and restraint grounds songs that are otherwise cosmically inclined."Lineage (Prologue)" eases into being with windchimes, effects, circular organ and little else, recalling a particularly subdued Sun Ra passage. That segues into "Lineage" proper, which props up the melody with shifty uptempo percussion and bass. "Ann Arbor Part 3 & 4" announces itself with lovely keys and falling rain before hip-hop beats steal the show. "Soaring" eases back into a handclap, acoustic guitar and harp sounds reverie, underpinned with lazy, spacey bass. Shigeto's brilliant drumming takes center stage on "A Child's Mind," moving from a bombastic unaccompanied run into esoteric jazz and finally settling into a shuffling, prismatic hip-hop. Shigeto's deft cymbal and snare work are also found on Huron River Drive, a dubby, smoky, soulful joint that dials back the lysergic digitalia that colors so much of the mini-LP as a whole. The title of "Field Trip" perfectly captures the adolescent joy and wonderment of the song, with live drums, ebullient toybox sounds and wide-eyed melodies. When the then 21-year old Mac DeMarco released his debut Rock and Roll Night Club 12"just a short while ago in the Spring of 2012, it was accompanied by a barrage of bizarrelyfunny promo videos, wildly unhinged live performances and a not-so-subtle disparate rangeof promo photos. The glam facade was purely that, an image that was manufactured for funto confuse the stiff and compartmentalizing world of indie music journalists. But it wasn't alla jest, as that EP covered a whole range of music styles that were latent in the ex-MakeoutVideotape frontman's already impressive slough of cassette-only releases. The sincere andwarm Mac who sang "Only You" was the same lipstick-wearing sleazoid that crooned"Baby's Wearing Blue Jeans" and that suited him and his listeners just fine.Now, all of six months later, Mac is back with his first proper full length, Mac DeMarco 2.As opposed to RNRNC, "2" is a concerted effort to produce a cohesive work that showcasesMac's natural ability as a songwriter, singer and producer. With a new arsenal ofrecording gear, the fidelity has substantially improved without compromising the immediacyand organic quality of his prior releases under any monicker. The results are immediatelyrewarding, from the warm "Cooking Up Something Good" to the heartfelt "My Kind ofWoman." Ausmuteants are four twenty-nothings from Geelong, Victoria, raised on a diet of seminal avant punk like Chrome and the Screamers. Let?s not mention Devo—as a two-piece, Jake Robertson (synth, guitar) and Billy Gardener (drums) flushed that obsession with the release of their Split Personalities album in 2012. They’ve since added Marc Dean and Shaun Connor on bass and guitar, respectively, and worked ’60s songwriting ideas, disco rhythms and a subtler brand of theft into finely crafted pop songs, recording 22 in early 2013. Aarght! Records picked the best twelve for Amusements, reissued on vinyl domestically by Goner.

Ausmuteants are liked by Vice and Dangerfield despite (or because of) their synthesizers, their swearing and their youthful good looks. For what it’s worth, Ausmuteants do not like Vice or Dangerfield.

Pay Jay Productions, Inc. was the company James Dewitt “J Dilla” Yancey founded in 2001 to house his production company and his publishing company. The Estate of James Yancey has revived Pay Jay as a functioning imprint, and is announcing its release of J Dilla's long lost vocal album, The Diary. The first single features "Anthem" b/w “Trucks” - two of the songs J Dilla recorded in late 2001 and early 2002 as he put the finishing touches on what was supposed to be an album featuring his raps over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others.
These two tracks, however, were produced by Dilla himself and come straight from multi-track masters found on 2” tape shortly after Dilla’s passing in 2006. These songs have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla’s original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla’s vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present. Rounding out this 12” is Dilla’s original mix of “Trucks,” discovered as a two-track demo mix. We’ve included this mix as it features an alternate version of Dilla’s vocals and a third verse not found on Dilla’s final sessions for this song.
