Originating from Riverside, California, the BellRays have been mixing punk, rock and soul with the unique authenticity that has made them who they are in today. "We created a band and music based on what we love." - explain Lisa Kekaula and Robert Vennum, the founding members of The BellRays. Chris Avantgarde, whose contributions to Drumcode have so far comprised an outstanding collab with Kevin de Vries ‘Mind Control’ and an A-Sides contribution ‘The Last Time’, returns with the goods and lives up to his boundary-pushing pseudonym. This has more sides than a rubix cube and shows the German’s sound design class, encompassing elements of breaks, bass, electronica and techno, yet still manages not to sound like anything else out there.

Calabra are London based duo DJ Toni Rossano and musician Neil Simons.

Having hung out as teenagers in the Midlands the friends went on to pursue different musical paths in the capital. Neil has engineered, mixed and produced a wide variety of artists whilst Toni, a DJ/Producer, was part of the pirate soul explosion as Blackbeard in the noughties and currently dabbles under the Gospel guise as The Showfa. Now many moons later...

The idea for Calabra was born during fuzzy after-party hours on the pebbles of a brisk Brighton beach and is the musical yearning for adventures on warmer Balearic shores. Sunshine inspired beats and melodic guitars lead a cast of analogue synths, percussion, fender bass, oboe and voices all lovingly coloured by 70’s art rock, New Age, folk and inspired Ghanaian High Life.

Picked up by Gerd Janson the Calabra EP features four debut tracks. The leading ‘Mazzara Return ’has a midtempo Balearic-like feel with lead guitar, house-up styled beats and electronica inspired atmospherics. Followed by the sci-fi synth driven ‘Half Baked ’with melodic spanish guitar riffs and sequenced synthesizers for that old skool analogue sounding thrill! ‘Hustle ’launches with a rolling live played bass and synth line on top of the guitar chill-out like licks fused with congas, bongos and cowbell rhythm courtesy of Yam Who? percussionist Des Morgan. ‘Respiro ’the EP’s grand finale introduces vocalist and songwriter Penelope Rossano and is a folk/jazz style ballad showcasing not
only a poetic gentle beauty in the song but also her own oboe composition to make a perfect book ending with the bonus of an instrumental added for measure for this debut EP on International Feel.

The premise for Five Nights at Freddy’s is inspired by and tinged with familiar nostalgia from our collective childhoods — pizza parties at the family amusement center in Anytown, USA, presided over by archaic animatronic creatures who fancy themselves a rock band.

We always knew there was a darkness there, amongst the dusty game cabinets and wobbly tables — something lurking, something… off kilter. It’s a plot that jettisoned Freddy Fazbear and pals into the retrosphere of megastardom — a franchise of countless games, books, and merch drenched in depths of lore, with the feature film from director Emma Tammi (and our pals at Blumhouse and Universal) as the culmination of it all.

However, an effective horror experience is nothing without its accompanying sound, and The Newton Brothers certainly showed up for this score. From the opening title track, they hypnotize us with the haunting vocals of a children’s choir, cut with the melodies of nursery rhyme horrorshow. It’s a chilling hors d'oeuvre, leading into a pulsing, synthy moody main course that is both a 90s throwback and freshly sinister. How could we expect any less from the boys behind the maniacal music of Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep?

Like all iam8bit releases, the unboxing is part of the fun, too, with four collectible character jackets featuring everyone’s favorite funtime gang — Freddy, Chica, Foxy and Bonnie — adorned with glow-in-the-dark eyes, ensuring even while listening in total darkness, you’ll have company. Minted on delicious Pizza Party Red vinyl, it’s an absolute feast for fans.

It’s a killer soundtrack, but be careful. You never know what other surprises could be waiting inside…

Since the dawn of the trombone (Early 15th century or so according to a quick Google search), trombonists all over the world have been compelled to create a wide assortment of brass-powered notes, both sweet and sour.

Developer Holy Wow made it their divine mission to document this phenomenon through the medium of interactive electronic entertainment. Trombone Champ is a celebration of the beauty and power of music — not just well-crafted, technically proficient music, but passionate, messy, and goofy melodies, too. Music is about self expression, and self expression simply isn’t always tidy and neat.

This LP is iam8bit’s humble attempt to capture that wonderfully weird energy on wax. The Trombone Champ Vinyl Soundtrack is a 1xLP packed full of sweet, sweet brass-powered tunes, selected and performed (excellently, by the way — no flubbed notes here) by the Holy Wow team themselves. Continuing the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics Series, we shine a light on Los Reyes 73 and their sensational debut LP from 1975. The album had multiple different pressings under various titles and artworks, but the music stayed the same and speaks for itself. The group set the bar high with this fiery Afro-Cuban-funk gem, letting loose a vibrant Latin workout combining psych rock trippiness with a heavy dose of deep funk. Elements that fuse to firmly cement this album as a ‘70s Cuban masterpiece and one of our favourites here at Mr Bongo HQ.

Releasing just two albums and a handful of 7-inch singles, the band were a popular and influential group in Cuba at the time. Since then, they have featured on several compilation albums across the 2000s that have helped raise their profile amongst new audiences worldwide.

Produced by the magical Raúl Gómez, the album featured a list of heavyweight Cuban musicians. Directed by Santiago Reyes and Ovidio Guerra, with orchestration from greats including Ricardo Eddy Martinez who also released the much-loved album 'Expreso Ritmico' in 1978 alongside Ignacio Herrera, Mario Valdes and Gilberto García. The album also features the writing prowess of Los Van Van’s Miguel Ángel Rasalps.

Blending traditional Cuban Son aesthetics with funk influences and psychedelic touches, the music housed within showcases a cosmic fusion that stands up on any modern dancefloor. The scintillating opener ‘Grandes Amigos’, the tripped out ‘Adeoey’ and the grooving ‘Un Lamento Hecho Cancion’ are just a handful of examples that exhibit the sheer musical melting pot of this album.

For this reissue, we have chosen to use the artwork from a Mexican version of the album released on Pentagrama Records that features the beautiful bird illustration cover art. The Cuban edition was released on the state-run Areito.

An outstanding and wondrous Latin record that has long been calling out for an official reissue.

Ghost Dubs, real name Michael Fiedler, aka Jah Schulz, announces a rebirth with 'Damaged', his first album for The Bug's Pressure label. Having recently dropped two criminally overlooked, experimental dub LPs, with his 'Dub Over Science' series, the German producer/bass specialist, now stretches his own parameters of outwardness still further, with these twelve fresh explorations of dub deviance.

For those who feel the fusion of dub techno and ambient drone had creatively ended with the demise of the short lived, Berlin based Chain Reaction label. Ghost Dubs now upgrades and extends that legendary blueprint's abstract methodology even further and deeper, floating away upon a wonderfully warm sea of hiss and static bliss. This is dub so atomized that it disintegrates within your eardrums. Its music, where the machines take over and virtually all traces of humanity are erased. But thankfully, the warmest soul still oozes seductively from the pores of Fiedler's robo riddims. Relentlessly hypnotic, seriously sedated, 'Damaged' celebrates the point of departure within its mesmerising low-end grooves.

Album opener 'Chemical', provides an opiated slo-mo skank, which sounds like Plastikman's 'Consumed' era pulsations drenched heavily in sub aquatic fx. A triumph of surface noise surfing and sub-woofer testing relentlessness, it provides the perfect intro to this compellingly immersive album. For batty shakers and headtrippers alike, there's added thrills aplenty, as Ghost Dub's richter scale tremor rhythms remain impressively massive, and the atmospheric depths of 'Damaged' appear tantalisingly oceanic. Throughout the duration of the dreamy selection, there is an obsessive balance of bewitching ambience and heavyweight bassbin shaking.

The lead single 'Thin Line' itself provides a missing link between African Headcharge's early percussive body probes and Rhythm & Sound's addictive radiance, with the slightest hint of Burial's doomed romantic hauntology added for good taste. Alternately, and no less gracefully, 'Dub Lobotomy' bizarrely resembles Miles Davis 'Get Up with it' chopped, screwed, and relocated to a futuristic Kingston Town. Impressive indeed, Fiedler's mastery of live dubbing on his mixing desk shines accross the duration, and gives the album an improvised edge, and sense of peripheral chaos.

Elsewhere, spooked steppers ('Hot Wired'), haunting house ('True to life') and 4th World psychogeography ('Undone'), combine to ensure there is a forever changing mixture of flavours percolating within the admirable consistency of the overall sound. With a tip of the cap, and nod of the head to Pole ('Second Thoughts'), it’s no surprise then that Pressure would then turn to the great, Berlin based producer Stefan Betke, to master/cut this collection at his infamous Scape mastering room. And a fine job he did too, as high quality sound and levels are definitely maintained throughout.

If you like your melodies submerged, your dub narcotic, your basslines obese, and your beats evaporating, 'Damaged' provides the perfect prescription and entry point into Ghost Dub's spectral soundworld.

Boudica is proud to present their first record of 2024, featuring an artist who holds a special place within the platform - none other than DJ and producer Wallis. DJ, live-act and former mastering engineer, Wallis speaks for a generation searching for novelty and emotion in the electronic music realm. Sharp engineering skills coupled with a unique approach to sound design allowed her to develop a trademark sound. Using an array of synthesisers, effects units, and experimental studio techniques, Wallis produces melancholic electronic music rapidly shifting between different patterns and atmospheres. She tours as a DJ and Live Act around the world, having played large festivals such as Dgtl or renowned clubs like Berghain, and will happily play at a large stage one day but at a small intimate sweaty basement the next. In 2024, she started producing music for fashion shows and debuted that project by creating the music for the entire Natasha Zinko runway show at London Fashion Week February 2024. The EP's opening track, "Hell is a Girl from Before (Rainy Summer Mix)," introduces a stirring blend of emotions. Starting with an emotional melody, accompanied by synths and a plucked instrument, it swiftly transitions into energetic segments driven by the drums. Vocals emerge, their words almost imperceptible, adding an intimate layer to the experience. The track maintains a steady pace, evoking the ambience of a rainy summer day. This creates a melancholic yet hopeful mood, transporting listeners through a journey of introspection. As "Protect Me From My Friends" unfolds, it feels like being whisked away to a new dimension, greeted by otherworldly, robotic sounds. The introspective journey of the previous track mutates into raw emotions, driven forward by a relentless bassline. Clear vocals take the forefront, guiding the listener through the sonic landscape, only to be interrupted by the commanding presence of the bassline, which assumes the main character role.

In "Sleeping Pills Are Gone," an atmospheric and gloomy introduction is abruptly interrupted by an acid and hefty bassline that dynamically evolves throughout the track, plunging the listener into an eyes-open dream born of a sleepless night. The vocals echo the track's title, creating a haunting repetition. Wallis strategically grants brief breaks, constructing a powerful crescendo that heightens the experience. These are momentary escapes before immersing the listener once more into the hypnotic trance induced by the solid four-to-the-floor march. Closing the EP with a striking finale, "Teenage Apocalypse" introduces a clunky melody that encapsulates the signature sound of the record. Characteristic vocals weave throughout, guiding the listener towards the track's crescendo. Driven by a flawless fusion of drums, the song transitions seamlessly into a powerful breakbeat moment, accompanied by yet another impeccable bassline. True to its title, it evokes the intensity of a day of judgment, leaving a lasting impact as the EP draws to a close. By their own admission, there was a time when it didn’t seem likely Torus would be standing here at all to introduce their debut album to the world. That in itself is a surprising opening statement to tumble from the mouth of frontman and band mastermind Alfie Glass as he and his bandmates sit in the front room of his home outside Milton Keynes. Torus’s every move to date has been met with intrigue and acclaim – ahead of critically-lauded debut EP ‘Sail’, key tastemakers in the shape of Kerrang! and Classic Rock were championing their “brand of zero-bullshit hard rock” that delivers “gargantuan riffs and thick, monstrous grooves” in the vein of rock greats such as Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age and Smashing Pumpkins. Katharine Whalen of Squirrel Nut Zippers fame, makes a triumphant return with her Jazz Squad featuring Austin Riopel on guitar, Danny Grewen on trombone, and the great Griffanzo on pianos. This time the chanteuse delivers an entire album of breezy west coast jazz sounds in the form of a tribute to Chet Baker.

It was around 1996 when Katharine Whalen first made her grand entrance onto culture’s collective radar as the sultry, yet effervescent voice of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, where she remained until their initial disbandment around the turn of the century. In addition to the Zippers putting dixieland jazz on the pop charts in the 1990s, they sneakily introduced an unsuspecting "alternative" crowd to jazz music. Her cultural impact was also felt when she voiced the song "You You You You You" a standout track from Stephin Merritt's (The Magnetic Fields) project titled The 6ths. That song would also find its way into commercials and the film Pieces of April.

After recording one solo album for Mammoth Records shortly after leaving the Zippers, Whalen stepped out of the public eye. However, she’s remained very much in the spotlight of one unique small town; Hillsborough, NC, which has been referred to as Twin Peaks meets Northern Exposure. It’s a surreal literary, liberal Mayberry. If you find yourself in this Southern portal, you can find Katharine Whalen's Jazz Squad playing monthly in a cocktail bar appropriately named Yonder.

The album was recorded in an old chapel in Hillsborough by North Carolinian royalty, Jerry Kee (Polvo, Superchunk, The Kingsbury Manx). Each song was recorded with the band all playing together in the same room, the way the old jazz records used to be put to tape.
