Philly's first supergroup returns with a new LPThey released four albums. Their joint debut LP with The Krown Rulers from Camden, New Jersey included production by the Ultramagnetic MCs' Kool Keith and Ced Gee, with a style that was bass-heavy with the Roland TR-808 drum machine and E-mu SP-12 sampler, raw "street" lyrics and aggressive scratch DJing. "baseline Cavi" is a collaboration album between Inland Empire/Los Angeles rapper Trizz and producer Mike Summers (aka Seven) from Kansas City. The album has that classic Westcoast Hip-Hop sound and the intro track gives that feeling right away. Guest features on the album are from Bino Rideaux, XV, T.F, Icecoldbishop, John Givez and Bale. Though fans may not know it, this collaboration between Inland Empire California emcee Trizz and Kansas City production ace Mike Summers has been brewing for close to a decade. Back in 2013 Summers (then known as Seven) was already a prolific producer signed to Tech N9ne's Strange Music label and Trizz was part of horrorcore legend Brotha Lynch Hung's Madesicc Muzic roster. The two connected while working on Lynch Hung's "Mannibalector" album and a spark for future work was laid. Linking up in spring of last year, the two creatively fed off each-other with the resulting album evoking classic West Coast melodicism and car-rattling thump. As Trizz states "this sh*t is so f*ckin authentic. It got bounce, it’s swangin' and bangin! When you hear this album, you can feel it and damn near smell the palm trees and bomb ass weed." As Summers relayed "It's probably different for a lot of my fans to hear a more classic West Coast style of production from me, but that style of production has always been embedded in my sound. I grew up on 90's West Coast Hip-Hops studying producers like DJ Quik and Dr. Dre. The only reason I started using lots of live musicians on my tracks was because I watched Quik do it. Baseline Cavi really let me dig into that classic L.A. sound that I've always wanted to build with." MC's Chem and Jah, from Washington Heights (ny) formed Trauma Squad when they were hooked up with a young producer named Om'Mas Keith by Raw Breed's business manager and co-producer Ariel Caban. Caban was in high school with the rappers and later went on to work in the A&R department of RCA Records at the same time as the 16 year old Keith was interning there. Caban told me "I introduced them to Om'Mas because both had unique styles. Trauma with their off the wall eclectic style and Om' Mas with his musical genius who can play every instrument. They hit it off well right from the jump and created the demo tape."

There was some interest prior to making their demo, from Profile and Sleeping Bag Records but nothing firm. Most of the demos weren't in great condition but 2 have been resurrected from the old demo tape for a little taster 7" of what this crew might've become. Recorded in 95, Herring presents 2 ill tracks from this unknown group's unknown catalogue. Enjoy yo!!

This never heard before EP's artwork pays homage to one of Tony's favorite movies. “Da Goodfella” was part of Tony’s incomplete project list prior to his passing on April 4, 2009. It was important to Tony's daughters that their Father's project be completed and released. His extraordinary talent deserves to be heard as he has left an indelible mark on the music industry. Tony D was a legendary Italian American Hip Hop Producer & Emcee from New Jersey. He was well known for his production of the conscious groundbreaking Hip Hop group Poor Righteous Teachers along with YZ, Black Prince & Aziatic, Blvd. Mosse, Scott Lark and many others. He released his solo album: "Droppin' Funky Verses" (4th & B'Way, 1991), Crusaders for Real Hip Hop "Deja Vu - It's 82" (Profile Records, 1992), several instrumental projects on the UK based Grand Central Records and various releases on his independent Cha-Ching Records label. If it's really a post-genre world, why does everything sound the same? The two halves of Tampa rap duo They Hate Change_Dre (he/him) and Vonne (they/them)_first came together in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teens. Dre had just moved down from Rochester, NY; Vonne was trying to sell him bad weed. It was clear from the start that the two listen to music differently from most people_they're sonic omnivores, obsessive deep-divers, lovers of rare and radical sounds. Starting as kids trawling the internet for tracks, they've been collecting music from around the world and across the decades, amassing a shared sonic knowledge so deep that "encyclopedic" barely begins to cover it _ not just the East Coast hip-hop that Dre grew up on, or the hyperlocal bass-music variants like jook (the Gulf Coast's twerkably raunchy answer to house) and crank (think "Miami bass meets Nola bounce"), but also drum `n' bass, Chicago footwork, post-punk, prog (they're, like, seriously into prog), grime, krautrock, emo, and basically any genre on the map. Dope Folks' 62nd release is the 4th installment in the "Killed By Def" compilation series featuring the work of DJ/producer The White Shadow from Norway. He went on to win the Norwegian DMC battles in 1988 and 1989 and began producing Hip Hop in 1990. In 1991 he moved to New York and became a member of the BDP POSSE and produced tracks for Critical Masz and The Warriors Of Shaolin. He moved back to Norway in 1994 and still continued to produce tracks for some of Hip Hop's biggest names. The White Shadow's "Then & Now" EP is an 8 track retrospective of his work from the early 90's to the present day. The newer material features MC's Raekwon, KRS One, Kool G Rap, Ras Kass, and Masta Ace just to name a few.

It was the early 2000's in Jacksonville, FL. Pre-social media, the Myspace Era. The acclaimed indie rap quartet, Asamov had recently put Duval County's underground Hiphop scene on the map, and their triple-threat frontman, Therapy aka Paten Locke was searching for some new inspiration. Paten would find the spark he was looking for in the newly minted couple making 'Heavenly Noise' in Jacksonville nightclubs - Batsauce and his wife, Lady Daisey. With Batsauce on the beats and Lady Daisey providing vocal harmonies (and graphics for the group), Paten found himself surrounded by a new creative energy that allowed him to relinquish the reigns on the production side and focus on his pen-game. Thus, The Smile Rays were born and they immediately started shinin'. Their soundscapes were rooted in funk, jazz and soul - sticking to a similar formula of eras past but adding twists and turns to make it their own. Their lyrics & song concepts were uplifting and hopeful. Their chemistry on stage was undeniable. With their electric live show and eclectic makeup, the trio took Jacksonville by storm and the world took notice. Paten's experience with Asamov opened doors for the group and soon they had their first deal on the table - a 12" single with Germany's Jakarta Records for their beloved anthem for the babies, 'A Toast'. On the heels of their initial 12", they were enlisted for the 'Rawkus 50' and released their first EP. Soon to follow, Japanese label 'Subcontact' offered to release another 12" plus their debut full-length album. That release became Party...Place. and it was released in 2007 in Japan only, on CD. Now for the 1st time ever, the debut album from The Smile Rays is available on all DSPs + limited vinyl pressing. The album features George Clinton, Dillon and Willie Evans Jr. and is sure to be treasured by fans of eras past and those still yet to come.
