anuary 26, 2004, dDamage releases their third album: Radio Ape. It's the striking arrival of a monkey that imposes itself by its strength and power. Behind the name dDamage are two Frenchmen: Frederic and Jean-Baptiste Hanak, two brothers who will have the particularity of forming one of the most atypical and singular groups of the French musical landscape at the beginning of this century.At first sight, it seems quite delicate to classify the duo's creation in a particular genre, as their influences are so multifaceted. If Frederic hails from Hip-Hop background, Jean-Baptiste is more influenced by Rock: two different sensitivities that come together to create a work full of originality. Thus, we come across twisted hip-hop samples, tortuous electro layers, modified voices and hi-gain guitars. An album that could be an explosive mix between Autechre and Sonic Youth. It was therefore not surprising to see this record released in 2004 on " Planet-Mu ", home of Mike Paradinas (u-ziq), a glorious English school of "Intelligence Dance Music" and "breakbeat" who produced the likes of Venetian Snares, Luke Vibert or Richard D. James.Fiercely noisy, but nevertheless well rooted in the hip-hop movement, dDamage's music begins by puzzling, then ends by carrying the listener away. Thick and compact, the apparent brutality of Radio Ape often gives way to melodies that are just as absorbing and noticeable. This can be felt on some very moving tracks like "Liquid words", "Aeroplanes" or "Maeban". Radio Ape by dDamage is a complex universe, just like this very particular syntax that can be found in their name but also in the titles of the tracks: "I feel so BadD, Tsunamiii" and up to the visuals developed by Raoul Sinier and this monkey with an enigmatic smile that is well locked in our memories.Radio Ape is glitch by essence, an album that glorifies chaos and confusion. This LP finally brings a Clipping fan-favorite, 2016’s Wriggle, onto vinyl in an improved, expanded version that features new art, previously unreleased remixes, and a track that’s exclusive to the vinyl format. The original, digital-only Wriggle EP was six tracks that weren’t finished in time to make it onto the group’s 2014 Sub Pop debut, Clppng. For “Shooter,” Clipping recorded themselves firing fifteen different guns, the sounds of which exclusively constituted the beat’s drums, augmented only by a synthesized tone-row. The verses referenced the well-worn technique of “hashtag rap,” but instead of using it to boast about the rapper’s personal wealth and masculine prowess, Clipping put forth imagistic narratives of three violent encounters. True to much of the group’s music, “Shooter” was an attempt to reframe a familiar style and test the limits of its formal capabilities. “Hot Fuck No Love” contains what might be the most explicit verse to date from Clipping’s favorite New Jersey rapper Cakes Da Killa. The EP’s title track, “Wriggle,” was built around a sample of the influential power-electronics song “Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel” by Whitehouse, transforming William Bennett’s torturous imperative into a instructional dance-floor banger. “Wriggle” and “Shooter” have become classic Clipping tracks and staples of their live show.

Although the two artists are separated by several miles, they experienced a very similar time during the creative process that gave inspiration and birth to this album. A time as if the days were just passing them by - It wasn’t until they finished the project that they noticed the track titles tell the story accurately. For example, the moments passing them by represented in the first track “Time.” Then on to “How It Go,” meaning things just are what they are sometimes.

Kenji in his own words: „I believe the titles and lyrics tell this chapter in my life perfectly and the instrumentals Mr. Käfer provided paint the picture perfectly. There wasn’t a direction for the project persay, it was more of a collection of similar vibes that came together in a cohesively.“

Ace Hashimoto is a contemporary R&B singer, songwriter, and producer whose smooth vocals, frequently applied to jazzy hip-hop inspired productions, resemble a distinctive cross between Pharrell Williams and Frank Ocean. The Chicago native has been active on the hip-hop scene, producing for SZA, Mac Miller, and Chance the Rapper amongst others before moving to Toyko in 2017 to hone his songwriting & singing capabilities. While living in Japan, he wrote for two of the country's biggest acts in Exile and CRAZYBOY/Elly of J-Soul Brothers and collaborated with fellow label-mate, Devin Morrison.

The following year, around the time he scored his first digital hit "Natural" feat. Moeshop -- acquiring over 2 million plays on Spotify -- Hashimoto began working on Play.Make.Believe, an album recorded over a 3 month span after returning to the United States. He was able to enlist the talents of pH-1 (of Jay Park's H1ghrmusic), H.E.R producer, Lophile & many more assist in crafting this beautiful nod to his influences. The album's title, "Play.Make.Believe." comes from Hashimoto's acknowledgement of the music he grew up on as child and his effort to recreate that nostalgia for the future generation.

Planet Asia helped jump-start the West Coast independent hip-hop movement, and has solidified himself as one of the most consistent and respected MCs in the game over his 20+ year career. He dropped his debut EP with producer Fanatik in 1998, and followed up quickly with the singles "Definition of Ill" (Stones Throw) and "Place of Birth" (ABB Records). In 2001, The Source Magazine gave him the ‘First Round Draft Pick’ and ‘Independent Album of the Year’ awards for ‘How the West Was One’, which was recorded with fellow CA rapper Rasco under the group name Cali Agents. This landed him a deal with Interscope Records, where he was signed until 2003 without releasing an album.
Planet Asia was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for his feature on the song "W" by Mystic, and was later signed to Avatar Records, which released his official debut album, ‘The Grand Opening,’ in 2004. It earned him another ‘Independent Album of the Year’ award from The Source. Later, he started his own imprint Gold Chain Music, on which he has churned out multiple projects. He has also collaborated on albums with the likes of DJ Muggs (‘Pain Language’), Evidence (‘The Medicine’) and Madlib (‘Cracks In The Vinyl’), among others, and released songs with artists such as Linkin Park, Bun B, Talib Kweli and Ghostface Killah.
The Fresno MC is fresh off of a strong 2017 which featured well-received collaborative albums with producers DirtyDiggs (‘Dirty Planet’) and Apollo Brown (‘Anchovies’). For 2018, Asia teamed up with Bay Area producer izznyce for this true solo project, sure to be considered the next classic in his vast catalog.
‘The Golden Buddha’ was produced entirely by izznyce (producer for Superstar Quamallah and more) and features AZ, Hus Kingpin, Turbin, Marvelous Mag, Killa Kali, TriState, Xiomara and The Architect. Speaking on the project, Planet Asia says: “This album represents the foundation of what Planet Asia is about and that is ‘balance’. Born and raised in Brooklyn N.Y., Doom has been into the culture since the early 80's from being a Graff writer, a B-Boy, a DJ and a Hip Hop producer. He has been in the studio with numerous artists all over the globe. His latest album "Temple of Doom" was a great success and received positive reviews worldwide. It featured many veteran MC's, including Craig G, Large Professor, Prince Po, Krumbsnatcha, Blaq Poet, and Grand Daddy I.U. to name a few.

It was last year, when talks about this record started. Doom invited Reks and Blacastan to create what was originally planned a 7" single. After a few months of brainstorming, and organizing the content, together with Doom we decided to extend it to an EP format.

Though again, produced using the mighty SP1200, we present to you a completely different record than all of our previous releases, our first 10" vinyl.

'City Of God' featuring Reks is a powerful narrative about the violent state of affairs in many of America's cities. Inspired by the movie 'Cidade De Dios' by Fernando Meirelles, Reks gives the listener an in-depth descriptive about everyday events one has to experience in order to survive in a tough, concrete jungle. Doom's precisely chopped piano stabs complement his lyrics, adding further gloominess to the track.
There are two versions of 'City Of God' on this record, the original on Side A, and the "Park Bench Mix" featured on Side B.

On 'Transmitting Live', Blacastan schools all wanna-be rappers on what it takes to be a true, hard to the bone MC. The charismatic poet, Blac brings us right to the centre of action in a crime-filled neighborhood, where gang violence is omnipresent. His explosive delivery and gripping storytelling blends perfectly with Doom's grimey, head-nodding instrumental.

The last track on the EP is a bonus beat called "SP Madness". Like in all of the instrumentals on the 10", here Doom also utilized only 10 seconds of sampling time.

Mississauga, Ontario emcee, Es joined forces with Scarborough, Ontario beatsmith J. Pal on his 6th solo release entitled “You Want A Piece Of Me?”. The two met through mutual friends back in ‘97 as McMaster University students who also had a mutual love for hiphop. J. Pal was host of an underground hiphop radio show at the time. Es, an avid fan and listener got put on to many a gem played on his show, “In Tha Kut” on Cfmu 93.3 in Hamilton.

Fast forward to 2012, the two would collaborate on two songs on Es’ debut album entitled “Feud For Thought”. After a 9 year hiatus, the two would decide to collaborate again. This time, on a full length release which speaks to the different aspects that define Es, the family man, the hiphop enthusiast and emcee.

About “You Want A Piece of Me?”: Chronicling who he is, where he came from, what inspires him, and what helps him to stand out, Es was supplied with the perfect backdrops to let you into the mind and soul of Es. This project was labeled “You Want A Piece Of Me?” to bring clarity, not a piece of [me] like physically challenge [me]. You want a piece of me? At 10 joints and around 35min run time, the goal with this project is to share pieces of Es' world that you may or may not have heard before. If it's really a post-genre world, why does everything sound the same? The two halves of Tampa rap duo They Hate Change_Dre (he/him) and Vonne (they/them)_first came together in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teens. Dre had just moved down from Rochester, NY; Vonne was trying to sell him bad weed. It was clear from the start that the two listen to music differently from most people_they're sonic omnivores, obsessive deep-divers, lovers of rare and radical sounds. Starting as kids trawling the internet for tracks, they've been collecting music from around the world and across the decades, amassing a shared sonic knowledge so deep that "encyclopedic" barely begins to cover it _ not just the East Coast hip-hop that Dre grew up on, or the hyperlocal bass-music variants like jook (the Gulf Coast's twerkably raunchy answer to house) and crank (think "Miami bass meets Nola bounce"), but also drum `n' bass, Chicago footwork, post-punk, prog (they're, like, seriously into prog), grime, krautrock, emo, and basically any genre on the map. Once they graduated to DJs on the Tampa DIY scene _ which includes everything from punk rock house parties to the black "teen nights" that pop up in rec centers and ballrooms _ they figured out how to pull all these disparate sounds together into a cohesive style. More importantly, they figured out how to make it something people will actually move to. When they made the transition to rapping and making beats, they brought that pleasure-seeking approach to sonic experimentation with them. "With this album, Vonne says, "it's really like, okay, you know how you talk about the internet breaking down borders? Here's what that actually sounds like. It's not just a hip-hop record with a couple more weird sounds. You want homegrown DIY? This is a record that was written, produced, and recorded in a 150-squarefoot bedroom from the least cool city you could think of." Finally, New is what a truly post-genre musical landscape is supposed to be: building deep connections that transcend outdated distinctions between them, spilling over with the joy of exploration and possibility, and daring other artists to think broader, go deeper, take bigger risks. This LP finally brings a Clipping fan-favorite, 2016's Wriggle, onto vinyl in an improved, expanded version that features new art, previously unreleased remixes, and a track that's exclusive to the vinyl format. The original, digital-only Wriggle EP was six tracks that weren't finished in time to make it onto the group's 2014 Sub Pop debut, Clppng. For "Shooter," Clipping recorded themselves firing fifteen different guns, the sounds of which exclusively constituted the beat's drums, augmented only by a synthesized tone-row. The verses referenced the well-worn technique of "hashtag rap," but instead of using it to boast about the rapper's personal wealth and masculine prowess, Clipping put forth imagistic narratives of three violent encounters. True to much of the group's music, "Shooter" was an attempt to reframe a familiar style and test the limits of its formal capabilities. "Hot Fuck No Love" contains what might be the most explicit verse to date from Clipping's favorite New Jersey rapper Cakes Da Killa. The EP's title track, "Wriggle," was built around a sample of the influential power-electronics song "Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel" by Whitehouse, transforming William Bennett's torturous imperative into a instructional dance-floor banger. "Wriggle" and "Shooter" have become classic Clipping tracks and staples of their live show. With this vinyl edition, Clipping fans old and new - and there are many new fans thanks to their breakout 2020 album, Visions of Bodies Being Burned, and Daveed Diggs' thriving acting career - get the vinyl version of Wriggle they've been clamouring for.

Paris based Roforofo Jazz is a 7-piece liveband fronted by Chicago born MC Days (aka RacecaR), with a certain taste for adventurous blends, mixing hip hop, afrobeat and jazz into their very own style. After more than 15 years slashing the afrobeat of Les Freres Smith with his guitar cuts, Martin Smith digged into the musical sediments and silts in a swamp of hip hop, funk groove, afro power, jazz freedom radicality, with a certain taste for adventurous blends. This wax solid 5 tracks Vinyl was recorded live in Montreuil (France) at Studios La Peche, in November 2019, just a few weeks after the band toured in Nigeria and played at the mythical New Afrika Shrine on the occasion of Felabration 2019, where they got invited to perform by the Fela Kuti family for a series of concerts in Lagos. The 5 titles include the single “Fire Eater”, a raw afro hip hop tune mixing rhythms in the tradition of polyrhythm afrofunk tunes, while also alternating in between jazzy mood and burning hip hop anthem. “Dump It” is a dark, mid tempo beat, borrowing the groove signature of ethiopian soul, and coated with hip hop sharp drops, while horns bring the jazzyness through their themes. “Helelyos” is a cover/extrapolation of Iranian singer Zia’s hit, to which Days vocals bring an heavy old school hip hop vibe. “2Kick1” is a relentless afrobeat oriented tune, though with a languorous spacy chorus that breaks with the traditional afrobeat routine. And “What We Think We Saw” ends the EP with an opening to more psychedelic visions, in which a Gil Scott-Heron spoken word style meets jazzy space echoes, flutes under massive reverbs in a global vibe that could remind old analog recordings of Mandrill, Cymande or LKJ.

This newly formed trio composed of Philly Hip Hop Legend ”Rahsheed aka Maylay Sparks”, newcomer “Chukk Rukkuz” and rapper/producer “K-Sluggah” from the squad known as Muddy Fatique, have joined forces to form the “Hood Thrill Hunters”. This 10 track urban reprise was entirely produced by Karl “K-Sluggah” Frigyes and is a must have!

K-Sluggah, an MC and beatmaker whose origins lie in the city of Malmö in Sweden, is part of the Muddy Fatique collective that’s revered in Sweden for sharp rhymes over rugged beats. In 2007 K-Sluggah started taking his beat-making craft more serious. His preferred weapons of choice are the classic beat machines ASR-10 and MPC 2500 and of course some dusty old records to go along. The result is a production style which is sample based, soulful, rugged and raw. He has released numerous projects with his ”Muddy Fatique” partners both behind the mic and behind the boards. On this particular project K-Sluggah exibits his talents by composing some of the illest breaks, tripped out bass lines and synth tones with the help of Jack Winge, studio aficianado and bass player, who also contributed to the 2013 release ”Spit On It”.

Last year he released the LP “Twin Cannons“ with NY rapper John Jiggs which was very well received in the underground circuit. He also has notable past work with Hus kingpin, Maylay Sparks, Granddaddy I.U, Mykill Miers, Tha God Fahim, Mach Hommy, Rozewood, Monsta Mook and Shady Records signees Westside Gunn & Conway.

Maylay Sparks delivers as usual, with his trademark dynamic, swift, and descriptive delivery over broken melodies, accompanied by riffs ranging from Balkan jazz clips to 70’s Vietnamese soul. His counterpart Chukk Rukkuz, whose fierce and aggressive flow with a hint of the golden era style cadence, is the perfect match for every selection. Features include John Jiggs, Rucker P.A.W.K, and Rocc Spotz (now known as Rocc Boogie) who is yet another heavy hitter from the Muddy Fatique team. The music is accompanied by the precise turntable assistance from Italy’s finest and most respected DJ, Bassi Maestro.

The artwork is a very personal touch, it's the Avenue Maylay Sparks grew up on as a kid during the 70's in Philly and it’s actually a cartoon of an actual picture.

A message reads: huge things are still sham. So easily understood, and so overwhelmingly so. If this is life at face value, the transmissions within S.AL’s debut are the counter agents. There is nurturing within Little Man, You’ve Had A Busy Day; awakened by nutriments and medicines.

Largely self-produced, Little Man, You’ve Had a Busy Day finds s.al kneading out the knotty burdens of a sun cycle. As a producer, s.al supplies vignettes of tape loop meditations, each an ornate anteroom or alcove in the happy home of the album. As a vocalist he is softly riding the forms, a provisionist of encouraging poems. From the outset of “Winner + Raps” he’s your friendly voyager with undeterrable empathy, bouncing effortlessly over a funky session. The refrain is simple: “easily distressed / excellent at managing distress.” Deeper into Little Man, s.al turns the guitar loops on “Phones” into a serene backdrop to ruminate on the absence of distraction. Much can be gleaned from Little Man - wonder, purpose, compassion, dexterity - but when s.al sings “there never was much else but the work / busying myself since birth,” it leaves a lasting impression that the album is consumed by simple pleasures and purposes. And so, a mistakenly broken loop on “King Size” is work flow, the steady rhythm of carpentry. The triumvirate of the “Idea 5” series seems littered at first, an exercise in revisiting a template anew, but intention is clear as s.al croons “I never make it through” as he reflects on a folkloric place called “the agate door.”

In the darker corners and closets like “Jeremiah (The Weeping Prophet)” and “Home Alone” the loops of anxiety are subdued by s.al’s mantra of “relax, make me slow.” Again, consider purpose. There are depths that must not be overlooked. S.al cannot divert attention. Little Man, You’ve Had A Busy Day has to go to nervous places, places of botheration, in order to bask in the glimmer of closer “$150 of your mmoney.”

Yes, it was a busy day. But upon reflection, it was without sham.

Danny Watts and Jonwayne recently captured Black Boy Meets World in the span of only a week, recording the 11-track LP at the Los Angeles recording facility Cosmic Zoo. Danny also wrote all of the lyrics to the album in this same window, finishing up to three songs per day as the Cosmic Zoo sessions occurred in an intense yet efficient form. Mixing and mastering was completed by Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev and artwork was supplied by Authors’ creative director Shane Sakanoi. Yogisoul returns with his first album in 8 years, after breaking through creative blocks and discovering a newfound love for his producing craft rooted in his childhood.

It’s that blunt rolling record, with the deep G-Funk grooves, skits, and raps by Woof. A record inspired by the albums Yogisoul grew up listening to. A combination of his imagination of the West Coast California landscape portrayed by 90’s records on Death Row Records, and the real-life experiences of California-based rapper, Woof.

But before Yogi could get started on the project, he had some creative barriers to work through, hurdles that had him wondering if he’d continue making music at all.

“A few years back I became a father, worked as a teacher, and didn't really feel inspired by the music I was making. I was kinda fed up with the lane I was in musically and had doubts about continuing. Which was very strange since I´ve been into music so heavily since I was a kid. Time for music was a bit limited and I just hit a creative stop for a while.”

Sometimes an existential crisis is all you need to unlock the tools to look deep within and take stock of what inspired your love for making music in the first place. For producer Yogisoul, it was thinking about the golden era of hip hop that initially sparked his interest in becoming a producer, and revisiting the albums that remain deep within his canon that inspired the beginnings of his new LP, Let the Dopeness Begin! Yogisoul began an inward journey that found him trying to produce from the perspective of himself as a kid.

“I started listening back to the records I really loved as a young teen. When I listened, I loved and felt very connected to the music, but had no idea of how it was made or what went into the record-making process. I found it very refreshing trying to make music from that perspective of the young mind just feeling the music, not understanding it or breaking it down. I really found my creative output again that way. When I grew up, the rappers and producers I listened to were like superheroes, larger than life.”

As Yogi dove deeper, he was able to move past the self-doubt that had him overanalyzing what he was creating and started producing beats that he felt could set the stage for storytelling. He wanted to make music that made you feel like you were watching a movie or listening to a soundtrack, cruising the streets in a lowrider in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Let The Dopeness Begin, taps into that storytelling not only with Woof’s raps but by offering multiple layers of production and sequencing that leaves room for skits that invite you into the sonic world of the album. When Yogi was trying to find a vocalist to collaborate on the album with, he had a vision for what the right voice would be for the project.

“In the process of finding my sound, I wanted to work with vocalists or artists that tell a story. Not necessarily by storytelling or in the lyrics, but just by hearing their voice you instantly know where they are from, what they represent, and what they are about. Like an outlaw on the prairie with an out-of-tune guitar is more interesting than a studio musician. Woof is that guy! Not on the prairie but in a lowrider under the streetlights sipping on gin & juice. My ability is not in living that life, but in the musical experience of knowing what can facilitate him in the best way sonically. Setting the scene for him with the beats, the talkbox, the scratches, and the skits on the record.” - Yogisoul

Yogi had become aware of Woof’s raps back in 2012, he always felt as if Woof was overlooked or going unnoticed. He made attempts to track him down, but it wasn't until more recently that Woof popped up on a social media page, which allowed Yogi to reach out in regards to the possible collaboration. The two made the record completely remotely, never even having a single conversation on the phone, it was all orchestrated via text. Yogi would send beats and Woof would send raps back, always making the recorded raps work for the beat, no matter the approach. Forcing Yogi to be creative with his production in ways he hadn’t before, testing his abilities to create a polished sonic world to lose yourself in.

“I worked a lot to make his vocals sound as good as they do, and have used a lot of analogue gear and processing to get them sounding the way they do now. The stems he had sent me have felt like a puzzle, and I pieced it together to a record in the end. I think that is what makes the record unique.” - Yogisoul

The first track they worked on was “94 Heavy”, which would become the first single on the album and is first the song on the record, past the album's introduction track. It wastes no time setting a vibe and transporting you back to 1994, the record is not just a record, it’s a time machine. A true representation of the whole record in one track, and a quintessential track within this collaboration of Yogisoul and Woof. It’s an undeniable head nodder, with smooth horns, deep synth bass that will leave no question about the record's low-end power, and a dope drum swing.

Other notable tracks on the record are “Comin Thru”, which is a braggadocious, G-Funk, banger! It contains all the ingredients of classic West Coast Rap albums. A smooth beat for Woof to weave in and out of, talkbox, scratches in the hook, and samples of legendary Los Angeles voices. A track that will make you feel like you should have a forty and a doobie nearby.

The title track, “Let the Dopeness Begin”, the self-titled track on the album is an homage to the West Coast Classics radio station on GTA: San Andreas. A cruise with the windows jam that slaps! “I want people to put this record on when the summer is incoming, when they pull their windows down, when they roll by the old court where they used to play basketball.”
For a record that comes in at just under 30 minutes, it is absolutely packed with material, and opportunities to explore the world created with the production, raps, and skits.
