In an interview released to Billboard in 2017, east coast veteran AZ explains how this collaboration with legendary DITC producer Buckwild came along:
"The sound was shifting. A lot of brothers in the street were telling me "You got to save us." And I'm like, "Save y'all from what?" So I took that title to save the people, then Buckwild played a joint in the studio called "Save Them," and I was like, "This is it."
The two don't really need no introduction: with the Brooklyn lyricist gracing the mic since the mid 90's beginning with one of his first appearances alongside Nas on "Life's A Bitch" and dropping legendary classics such as "Doe Or Die", and the Bronx producer providing beats to artists that range from old school acts such as The Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, modern day legends such as Vinnie Paz, Meyhem Lauren, Termanology and, last but not least, legendary DITC members Big L, Fat Joe, Diamond D and the list goes on and on.
AZ had to recruit "some brothers who I know respect the craft" and found them in Wu-Tang Clan's own Raekwon alongside the late great Prodigy of Mobb Deep. The song was released in April 2017 and brought a breath of fresh air with its classic vibe, together with a video being released just days before Prodigy's untimely passing in June 2017. The rest, you already know, is straight up hip-hop history.
Tuff Kong Records teamed up with Mr. Anthony Best aka Buckwild to bring this legendary track on wax as a limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. The first 200 are pressed on bronze marbled vinyl and come with a limited edition patch and die-cut sticker, 300 on clear red vinyl and the remaining 500 on black vinyl.

MIKE raps over characteristically lo-fi, and soulfully hazy, self-produced beats. Themes about the depression and anxiety that accompany being young and African American abound throughout his music, but a muted sense of hopefulness and certainty that he is moving towards ultimate triumph is the motor quietly propelling things forward. In New York, he discovered several artists with a similar ear and style, and formed his collective [sLUms]. Chicago wordsmith Verbal Kent (Ugly Heroes) and Spanish-German beat maker Superior have joined forces. The resulting full-length album “Half My Life” is set for release via Below System Records. Known for his mixture of verbal gymnastics with humor and everyday pathos, Verbal Kent delivers what might be among his most personal rhymes.
Speaking on the significance of the album title Kent said “Half My Life signifies the amount of time I’ve been at this. I started rhyme writing seriously at 18/19 years old and never looked back. I’ve always felt grounded in my expectations, fame and fortune was never a factor for me. I love making music enough to do it seriously for 20 years now, and I doubt I’ll ever be able to stop.”
Superior’s creative use of psychedelic, rock, soul and funk samples create an eclectic yet cohesive musical backdrop. Some examples of the chemistry include the first single “The Little Things” which is Kent’s version of the love joint (see Common’s “The Light”) but
more in Seinfeld territory. Sample lyric “Dr. Kirschenbaum’s my dentist and now he’s your dentist and that goes for any practitioner of medicines.”
Tracks like “Classic Shit” and “For The Love” are deeply biographical tracks while there is also straight quality emceeing tracks including “Go Get The Dank” and “Steven Hawking Walking”. Guests that get it in on the album include Vic Spencer, Sonnyjim, Recognize Ali and Lance Ambu.
Initially linking up on a track on Superior’s album “The Journey” (released early 2017) the duo realized that they were a good combination. Speaking on the album process Kent said “when Superior started sending me beats I started realizing his beats are emotional, so I let them lead the way as a result a lot of the content is reflective.”
The budding of a serious team for boom bap lovers, Superior and Verbal Kent were able to link up in person this summer and perform at Hip Hop Kemp, one of Europe’s biggest festivals. “More on the way” Kent adds."

Legendary Detroit emcee Phat Kat and Berlin bred DJ/Producer DJ Dister present their new album “The S.O.S. Project”.

Standing for "So Old School" Dister's soulful but dusty-break laden beats (which defined the J Dilla/Slum Village era) provides the perfect backdrop for Kat's fiery 90's honed flow. Speaking on how they linked up Dister said "we initially recorded a track called "Rappin Ass Rapper's" on my album Consistent Knockouts (2015). The vibe was so dope that we decided to do a whole project together."

The first evidence of this chemistry is in the single "Revolt For Change" a scathing social commentary as Kat says is "about police brutality excessive force and how our citizens are being treated like animals and the current situation our country and community is in." Other tracks salute The "D" (as his home city is known) and retrace his personal Hip-Hop history ("The Monument" feat DJ Dez) or relate tales from the crime side ("Shots", "Storm").

An emcee's emcee Phat Kat (aka Ronnie Euro) initially came up in the mid 90's as part of a duo with J Dilla (then known as Jay Dee) known as 1st Down. Though legal troubles halted the group's momentum, Kat and Dilla collaborated consistently over the following years. Kat's recorded output also includes work with Black Milk, Slum Village, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Obie Trice and Flying Lotus. He has also toured worldwide including frequent trips to Europe to perform.

With a resume that stretches back fifteen years, DJ Dister was a strong part of the Berlin, Germany true-school Hip-Hop scene. In 2005 as part of the Born 2 Roll crew, he helped to organize the Born 2 Roll night, a monthly event at the Cassiopeia Club. This popular event drew thousands of attendees for over a decade and also drew performances from such names as KRS-One and De La Soul. He released two albums as a producer including the debut ROLL WIT DIS (2013) which featured appearances from Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, KRS-One, Fashawn and others. 2015’s Consistent Knockouts featured Jeru The Damaja, eMC, Phat Kat and others. Dister now resides in Los Angeles, CA and is working on several EP's and albums currently.

Since he first entered the rap game, every mention of Chris Rivers inevitably acknowledges the influence of his father, Big Pun, one of the art form’s all-time greats. It’s a gift that offered the Bronx MC the opportunity to be heard, but simultaneously a curse that elicits unfair comparisons. But with his Mello Music debut, G.I.T.U., Rivers achieves what would’ve been impossible for a lesser talent: he stakes his claim as a singular artist, one speaking for his generation, his culture, his familial heritage, and most crucially, himself.

If Rivers is unquestionably the son of the first solo Latin rapper with a platinum plaque, he has clearly evolved into his own man. G.I.T.U is the opportunity to tell his story--one that starts full of mourning and self-doubt but matures into a gripping tale of self-discovery. In bold declarative terms, he sketches a portrait of a life lived on the margins, weathering the storms of abuse, poverty, and the lingering shadow of high expectations.

There are struggles with addiction and suicidal thoughts, but Rivers transcends those demons to deliver audio dope that does his legacy proud. He raps with the jaw-dropping lyrical agility and syllable precision that you’d expect from his patrimony, but with the vulnerability and introspection that can only come from an artist who possesses a rare knowledge of self. You can hear the inheritance of his late great father, but also a synthesis and expansion upon the path trodden by Black Thought, Mos Def, and Lupe Fiasco.

The title itself doubles as a mantra: Greatest In The Universe. This is the self-affirmation that Rivers told himself in his most turbulent moments. It’s an inspirational credo that allowed him to keep going, but also operates as fuel to listeners -- particularly those seeking a refracted light from someone deeply familiar with the darkness.

The 16 tracks encompass nearly every mood. There’s the confessional “Perfect,” where Rivers declares “well, I never loved myself, but right now I’m in love with two bitches, I mean women, I mean prisons, I mean prisms.” In the course of a single sentence, he’s able to convey labyrinthine complications. There is “Trick,” where Rivers rumbles like a champion prizefighter, boasting about how his sisters taught him how to brawl, reminiscing on his early days as a “little Puerto Rican fat boy with a brain like an asteroid.” Over rope-a-dope drums, he creates an anthem built for stage-diving and chaos, delivering a pummeling series of references that run from MC Hammer to Cassius Clay to anime. It’s a modern iteration of a tunnel banger: riotous, rowdy, New York brass knuckle rap.

“Damaged Goods” finds the 25-year old lyricist questioning the differences between lust and love, dropped his guard to exhibit a relatable sensitivity. “Wolf Mode” pairs a poignant sax lick with a plea to be able protect oneself from the storms of life. It’s not about being bulletproof, but rather, to possess the strength to endure the chaos that we must face. Yet Rivers is willing to accept the challenges head-on, claiming that he’d “rather have the hard truth than a sweet lie.” While “N.A.S.A.” takes dead-aim at the traps of millennial life: too many useless contacts in your phone, the dim lies of clout, and the indelible need to find the real ones who will hold you down. There is also a flawless “Pakinamac” homage.

The emotional centerpiece of the album arrives on the heart-wrenching “Sincerely Me.” It’s a tribute to Big Pun, but one that refuses to bow down to over-sentimentality. You feel Rivers’ pain and sadness, the struggles of his family, and his frustration at being unable to have a father to turn towards for advice. It’s a votive to a dearly departed spirit, gone much too soon. But when the song fades out, Rivers is stronger than before. A prayer has been answered. It’s the fully fleshed out picture of a son who doesn’t want to eclipse the father but rather, who wants to be able to stand beside him, shoulder to shoulder, two of the greatest of their times.

Although the guys have appeared on Black’s previous works, The Rebellion Sessions is the first project created by the four as a collaborative unit. The album, at times recalling the works of Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Sly & The Family Stone, D’Angelo, and Robert Glasper, builds off Black Milk and Nat Turner’s incredible live show, honed over the course of years and more than 90 shows played worldwide in 2015 alone. Black Milk & Nat Turner will embark on The Rebellion Tour in Europe this May, performing select tunes from The Rebellion Sessions in addition to songs from Black Milk’s extensive catalog, before hitting the road in the States.

Fresh Air is the result of cooperation between rapper Belmondawg, producer Expo 2000 and the legendary jazzman Michał Urbaniak.

The single was produced by Expo 2000 using a 12-bit sampler based on samples from the song "A Day In The Park" from 1978, and solos on soprano saxophone recorded especially for this purpose by Michal Urbaniak. The single is maintained in a positive style of jazzy hip-hop.

Open Mike Eagle returned to Chicago on January 25, 2019 to participate in a Closed Session documentary and recording session with Closed Sessions' in-house producer, BoatHouse. It was a homecoming of sorts for Eagle. He grew up and cut his teeth in Chicago's underground Hip Hop scene, yet moved away and achieved musical success in Los Angeles. His return visit featured a sold-out show at the Empty Bottle and this recording session, that also felt like home. "It just reminded me of the rapping I came up doing in Chicago," he said in the accompanying documentary. "baseline Cavi" is a collaboration album between Inland Empire/Los Angeles rapper Trizz and producer Mike Summers (aka Seven) from Kansas City. The album has that classic Westcoast Hip-Hop sound and the intro track gives that feeling right away. Guest features on the album are from Bino Rideaux, XV, T.F, Icecoldbishop, John Givez and Bale. Though fans may not know it, this collaboration between Inland Empire California emcee Trizz and Kansas City production ace Mike Summers has been brewing for close to a decade. Back in 2013 Summers (then known as Seven) was already a prolific producer signed to Tech N9ne's Strange Music label and Trizz was part of horrorcore legend Brotha Lynch Hung's Madesicc Muzic roster. The two connected while working on Lynch Hung's "Mannibalector" album and a spark for future work was laid. Linking up in spring of last year, the two creatively fed off each-other with the resulting album evoking classic West Coast melodicism and car-rattling thump. As Trizz states "this sh*t is so f*ckin authentic. It got bounce, it’s swangin' and bangin! When you hear this album, you can feel it and damn near smell the palm trees and bomb ass weed." As Summers relayed "It's probably different for a lot of my fans to hear a more classic West Coast style of production from me, but that style of production has always been embedded in my sound. I grew up on 90's West Coast Hip-Hops studying producers like DJ Quik and Dr. Dre. The only reason I started using lots of live musicians on my tracks was because I watched Quik do it. Baseline Cavi really let me dig into that classic L.A. sound that I've always wanted to build with." Lyrically Trizz's immediately distinctive flow and storytelling abilities are at a new plateau with the emcee admitting "The lyrics on this album are probably more refined and defined because I just turned 30 and I have no more time to waste."

Composed of rhyme-vets Pawz One and Evolve are Random Act Of Violence! The duo’s self-titled release is chock-full of grimy bars over bangin’ beats for the head-nodders. In contrast, the 1990 cassette release of "They Can't Cope" is currently, somewhat optimistically we might add, available on Discogs for a cool $350! This E.P. comprises three of the tracks from that cassette release, together with previously unreleased instrumentals, as well as two additional never before heard vocal tracks that didn't fit (both literally and artistically) on our Swellsville Sessions E.P. Of particular note, "Too Much For The Mental" is as good as anything from the early 90's and leaves you wondering how this crew never blew up. This is not only a great record but also Vancouver and Canadian hip-hop history!

Stay Close To Music’, the forthcoming new studio album from Mykki Blanco, is unlike anything they have released before. Adventurous and expansive, it shatters any previously held assumptions about Mykki’s artistry, leaving them free to define their sound for themselves. The LP is being released on October 14, 2022 via Transgressive. Throughout their evolution, poet, artist, musician Mykki Blanco has continuously blurred genres - pulling rave, trap, grunge and punk influences into a swirling pool of experimental hip hop that celebrated queer and trans experiences. Yet, Mykki admits that “at that point in my career, I didn't know what my own music sounded like without any kind of direct, outside reference. That's not a bad thing; that's how the majority of music is made.” Ultimately Mykki concluded they wanted to create their own sonic universe from scratch. To facilitate this, they collaborated with producer and multi-instrumentalist FaltyDL, who allowed them to envision new soundscapes built from lush, live instrumentation. “It just transported me,” they admit. “It enabled me to dream in a way that I had never dreamed with my own songwriting. All of a sudden, I felt like I had this template where I could make that sound my own.”

The songs spun together through numerous jam sessions, with writing taking place in Lisbon, Paris, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. By 2019, Mykki realized that they were working on two different records concurrently. The first became 2021’s lauded mini-album Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep and now Mykki readies the second collection of the sessions via Stay Close To Music. “I wanted to see what it would be like to go back and be a musician from another time where you had to start every ingredient raw from scratch. That process, ideology and that way of making has not only changed me as a musician, it has creatively changed me as a person.” Stay Close To Music features from Michael Stripe, Saul Williams, Anohni, Dianna Gordon, Devendra Banhart, Jónsi and more.
