Well it's been a while, but we are finally back in Bushwick for the latest installment in the Chbu5h Series. But what happened to Chbu5h09 I hear you say - and that's a very, very good question....hold tight and you will get the answer 1st week of June......

So after years of trying, I finally hooked up with the man like Rich Blak, one time member of Da Beatminerz extended crew. Rich is that dude, so we hit it off right away and he dug deep into his 90's demos and found this selection of unreleased heaters from the Shu-box Studio days.

Shu-box studios was located in the basement of Rich's crib around Decatur St & Knickerbocker Ace in the Bushwick [Darkside] section of BK. He recorded a bunch of material down there with local artists in the 90's and this selection of demos heard for the first time here, is what we present to you as another part of the much-loved Chbu5h series on Herring.

Many heads will know Shadez of Brookyn, but the rest of the acts are pretty obscure. Poetikal Thugz was Rich and Chocolate Tye, both Beatminerz affiliates at the time of these demos. Nothing was ever released by the PT's, until now, that is. Franc P was a local MC who used to hang out with the fellas. N.O.R was a Shadez spin off outfit and Kok/tna used to work with Rich on demos and nearly signed with Priority.

It's been 9 years since we dropped the last edition of the Chbu5h series [Poops], so I'm buzzin to take heads back on the L train as we dive deeper into the world famous Bushwick flava that underground headz have been feenin for for nearly 30 years.....

Originally released in 1997 on CD only, the sophomore album "Everything Is Nice" by Prose & Concepts finally gets the full reissue treatment. The group comprised of MC Dope, SharkE, Mic Dub, Beatnik, DJ Ace and Rawi were sporting the Seattle underground sound of heavy drums and dusty loops paired with cuts back and forth.

In addition, the album includes the "Bass Camp Demo" version of "Higher Places". The original track might be known to diggers from the excellent "14 Fathoms Deep" compilation released on Loosegroove Records in 1996 showcasing the vivid Seattle Hip-Hop scene in the mid-90's.

When Leon Michels and El Michels Affair released their rst record, Sounding Out The City, in 2005, it was hard to guess what was next for Michels and his then-introduced, now-patented "cinematic soul" sound. Now, four EMA studio albums and scores of tribute and remix projects later - all while producing for some of the biggest names in the industry - Michels has trademarked his sound, with each project taking audiences somewhere new and pushing the boundaries of what he is known for. The man is a river, not a lake and this time he takes his golden touch into the realm of hip-hop laying down a musical bed for one of the greatest to ever rhyme into a microphone: Black Thought of The Roots crew. Releasing on Big Crown Records, the LP is called Glorious Game and it is a remarkable debut partnership in more ways than one. Michels provides his bottom-heavy, soul-tinged production for Black Thought who gives us some of the more personal and transparent verses we've ever heard from him. Michels and Black Thought have been in each other's orbit for a while now. The two first met in the 2000s when Thought was first getting familiar with the contemporary soul scene. "Out of that whole world, Menahan Street Band was probably my favorite," recalling the funk and soul group Michels was a founding member of back in 2007. Fast forward a few years and musicians from that collective - Dave Guy on trumpet and Ian Hendrickson-Smith on sax - are now full time players with The Roots. This connection eventually led Leon and Thought to doing a few fundraising events around NYC and Philly together. "Before long, Black Thought was coming around the studio and would jam with us from time to time," Michels explains. "Then, fast forward to 2020 and Covid lockdowns, he just hit me up out of the blue, wanting me to send him stuff to write to. We both were looking to stay busy." Being that Black Thought is the co-founder and emcee for, hands down, the best live-band group in hip-hop. Michels took a decidedly different approach to this project and instead of sending recorded tracks of live compositions, he pulled out the sampler and sampled himself and some records from his collection. "I'm a big fan of soul music," as if Michels has to remind us. "And part of hip-hop's appeal to me has always been the sample-based production" For Glorious Game, Michels would make wholly composed and recorded soul songs in his studio, sample himself, then chop and/or loop up his sounds and create instrumentals for Black Thought. On some tracks he took a more traditional hip-hop approach, starting from samples of other people's music but then adding live instrumentation on top. But for the most part, it's him reinterpreting his own compositions into something new. The result is an organic feel of loop-based tracks that breathe and uctuate enough for Black Thought to ex on. "What I write about is determined by the equation of the producer's energy and my energy," Black Thought says. "It's about where we meet." So armed with Michels sampled and re-sampled soul cinematics, Black Thought rhymes through personal memories.

Kid Abstrakt and Polish beat magician Emapea have teamed up for an intriguing new album called Jazzy Vibes, a throwback to ‘90s Golden Era hip-hop updated with a 2020 spin.

Kid Abstrakt, a Los Angeles native born to a Nicaraguan father and Brazilian mother, formed his first group Revolutionary Rhythm in high school, which ultimately led him to touring with some of his hip-hop heroes, including members of the Pharcyde.

“I fell in love with hip-hop when I first heard A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde,” Abstrakt says. “It was crazy to hear Q-Tip, Pete Rock and J Dilla sample jazz records and have MCs dropping conscious rhymes I could relate to.

“While mainstream hip-hop found different styles throughout the years, we just wanted to make music that was similar to the records we bought back in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. We wanted to tell our story over jazz and soul samples.”

As the title suggests, Jazzy Vibes retains the tried-and-true formula of mellow, jazz- infused production and boom bap style rhymes, but Abstrakt’s lyrics are bursting at the seams with deep, introspective musings on his private life delivered in a continuous barrage of flawlessly executed bars.

“The lyrics go beyond just rhyming words and trying to sound hard on a beat,” he explains. “The album dives into days where I struggle to stay positive and find a balance between work and what I love, and almost quitting on my passion because I needed to focus on supporting my family.

“Tomorrow is not promised and my music has helped others through their struggles. It’s deeper than rap and this journey has truly humbled me.”

The 10-track project boasts contributions from DJ Million Faces, Predominance, Innate and Young Dreamer and is expected to arrive on July 24.

King Tone aka Alamo (born Wilfredo Nunez) is a hip hop musician, born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. Inspired by the golden age of hip hop, Tone gained an interest in music at a time when groups like N.W.A, Public Enemy and EPMD were pushing boundaries.

By 1991, when Tone had already written and recorded numerous projects independently, he was introduced to "Lenny Grace" aka "AFTAMAF" another local MC/Producer from the Providence Area which was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Aftamaf's ability to create music using everything from live instruments, to the SP-12 and MPC paired with King Tone's "paint you a picture you can listen to" kind of flow proved to be the perfect combination. They were able to create classics like "Rhyme and Punishment" and "Victims of da Streets" in 1997 along with countless other hip-hop gems that remain unreleased. In 2018, Meyhem Lauren teamed up with Brooklyn-based producer Harry Fraud to bring you Glass. The original 9-track project featured Action Bronson, Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Big Body Bes and more. For Glass 2.0, the duo went back to the archives and as the quarantine started, they began to revisit all of the music they recorded together while recording the original Glass. “Meyhem and I had some new records and a bunch of demos and that we hadn't done post-production on yet. Over the course of about a week in May, I locked in and pretty much tore the songs apart production wise. Then rebuilt them into what would become Glass 2.0” – Harry Fraud “Me and Fraud had a bunch of unfinished music in the stash that was recorded during the time that we made the original Glass project. During quarantine extra spices were added and a new dish was born. To make a long story short, sometimes the leftovers taste better than the initial meal.” – Meyhem Lauren While the majority of Meyhem’s vocals were recorded in 2017-2018, Harry Fraud’s tailor-made production of each song gives Glass 2.0 a sound and style unique from its predecessor. While the second installment of Glass only features Big Body Bes and Bags, this leaves plenty of time for Meyhem to showcase his lyrical ability, which is especially sharp on “Poseidon’s Wrath”, “Root of Evil” and “Yucca” (all previously unreleased in any format). A respected staple of the modern underground hip-hop scene, Meyhem Lauren is no stranger to the game. Having been on the scene since the mid-2000s, Meyhem is best known for blending his “luxury rap” flows over production reminiscent of 90s east coast hip-hop. Throughout his career, he has worked closely alongside DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, Madlib, Freddie Gibbs, Czarface, Sean Price, Roc Marciano, J-Love, and his childhood friend, Action Bronson. Their friendship is evident in the Viceland television show F*ck, That’s Delicious, in which Meyhem is featured alongside Action in each of the episodes. Harry Fraud’s production first popped off on “New York Minute” for French Montana before the two delivered the breakout “Shot Caller” in 2011. A string of influential Harry Fraud-produced songs and records followed, including tracks for The Weeknd, Sam Smith, A$ap Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Peep, Action Bronson, Benny the Butcher and more. Meyhem and Harry have proven to be a perfect match and Glass 2.0 is sure to be an instant fan favorite.

In an interview released to Billboard in 2017, east coast veteran AZ explains how this collaboration with legendary DITC producer Buckwild came along:
"The sound was shifting. A lot of brothers in the street were telling me "You got to save us." And I'm like, "Save y'all from what?" So I took that title to save the people, then Buckwild played a joint in the studio called "Save Them," and I was like, "This is it."
The two don't really need no introduction: with the Brooklyn lyricist gracing the mic since the mid 90's beginning with one of his first appearances alongside Nas on "Life's A Bitch" and dropping legendary classics such as "Doe Or Die", and the Bronx producer providing beats to artists that range from old school acts such as The Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, modern day legends such as Vinnie Paz, Meyhem Lauren, Termanology and, last but not least, legendary DITC members Big L, Fat Joe, Diamond D and the list goes on and on.
AZ had to recruit "some brothers who I know respect the craft" and found them in Wu-Tang Clan's own Raekwon alongside the late great Prodigy of Mobb Deep. The song was released in April 2017 and brought a breath of fresh air with its classic vibe, together with a video being released just days before Prodigy's untimely passing in June 2017. The rest, you already know, is straight up hip-hop history.
Tuff Kong Records teamed up with Mr. Anthony Best aka Buckwild to bring this legendary track on wax as a limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. The first 200 are pressed on bronze marbled vinyl and come with a limited edition patch and die-cut sticker, 300 on clear red vinyl and the remaining 500 on black vinyl.

Designed by Colors’ in-house creative team, the vinyl cover is mirrored, meaning its appearance adapts depending on the light and colors it reflects. This was an important decision to ensure the cover represents all of the featured artists, who all performed their A Colors ShowS against different colored backdrops. The mirrored material also enables the audience to literally (and hopefully metaphorically) see themselves in the album.

Each side of the mirrored cover is adorned differently: while the “move” side features embossed lines, stripes and slashes indicative of motion, the more introverted “feel” side is debossed with goosebump-like grooves. Even with their eyes closed, people will be able to feel which side of the album is which, adding an extra sensory layer to the listening experience. MOVE:FEEL1’s design also prioritizes sustainability, using no single-use plastics for its packaging.

Pressed On Red, White and Black Double Colored Vinyl With Commemorative Numbered OBI Limited To 2000 Copies Thirty years ago on May 4, 1993, Run-DMC made one of the greatest comebacks in Hip-Hop history with the release of their 6th studio album Down With The King. To understand the significance of this feat we have to go back a few years. Coming off an amazing four-album run ending with the platinum album Tougher Than Leather, Run-DMC released their 5th studio album, Back From Hell, to lackluster sales. Did Run-DMC fall off? Did the emergence of gangsta rap push them off to the side? It was sad to see your Hip-Hop heroes take a fall. Then in 1991, a 12-inch remix came out for the single "Back From Hell" featuring Chuck D and Ice Cube and fans took notice. It would be two more years before anyone would hear from Run-DMC again. In March of 1993, a new single and video “Down With The King” debuted on Yo! MTV Raps featuring the new Hip-Hop Gods Pete Rock and CL Smooth paying homage to The Kings calling back verses from Sucker MCs over a dope signature Pete Rock beat. The video would be in constant rotation on Ralph McDaniels Video Music Box, YO!, BET’s Rap City and more. Fans watched it over and over to catch all the cameos, everyone from Eazy-E to the Native Tongues Family of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. The anticipation was building, but would the album live up to the lead single that knocked it out of the park? On May 4, 1993, the album dropped on CD, Cassette, and Vinyl. Run-DMC enlisted The Bomb Squad from Public Enemy, Q-Tip, Epmd, Jermaine Dupri, Kay Gee of Naughty By Nature, and Pete Rock to produce the album with a special appearance by Tom Morello rocking out his guitar emulating DJ scratches he made famous with Rage Against The Machine. Their rhyming was as enthusiastic and powerful as they were on their debut album 10 years prior. Run-DMC, the self-proclaimed Kings of Rock and original Kings of Hip Hop were indeed back. The album debuted at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and #7 on the Billboard 200 and would go Gold within two months. Get On Down is proud to present for the first time on vinyl since its original release, a 30 Year Anniversary pressing on double-colored vinyl with numbered OBI in a gatefold jacket.

So my man Hakan Dougpark, a well known demo tape hunter and youtube poster hit me up with the Lord Dakim and the Mellow One demo tape from 93 and said: "Yo Bob, any chance of making this happen?". It took a while but finally the producer Jerry (Ain't it Funky) Phillips found the OG tapes and this stunning EP was born.

Peep the interview below to get more info on the crew. There were only 50 demo tapes ever, most of which ended up at radio stations and labels. No significant interest emerged, that is until 30 years later when Herring came along to make it happen. What can I say fisherman, it was definitely worth the wait!!!

MC's Chem and Jah, from Washington Heights (ny) formed Trauma Squad when they were hooked up with a young producer named Om'Mas Keith by Raw Breed's business manager and co-producer Ariel Caban. Caban was in high school with the rappers and later went on to work in the A&R department of RCA Records at the same time as the 16 year old Keith was interning there. Caban told me "I introduced them to Om'Mas because both had unique styles. Trauma with their off the wall eclectic style and Om' Mas with his musical genius who can play every instrument. They hit it off well right from the jump and created the demo tape."

There was some interest prior to making their demo, from Profile and Sleeping Bag Records but nothing firm. Most of the demos weren't in great condition but 2 have been resurrected from the old demo tape for a little taster 7" of what this crew might've become. Recorded in 95, Herring presents 2 ill tracks from this unknown group's unknown catalogue. Enjoy yo!!

Boombox is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ Boombox series on the early days of hiphop on vinyl and features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of early rap and disco rap records made in the USA in the period 1979-83. The album includes the first releases of seminal groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More through to a host of rarities and little-known obscurities such as the Carver Area High School band’s ‘Get Live 83’, an awesome record made at a Chicago high school. The album is released as a deluxe triple LP complete with 3x full inner sleeves of extensive sleeve notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. There is also a very-limited one-pressing only special deluxe version that comes with an extra bonus super-rare 7” single of ‘Magic’s Rap’ by Magic’s Trick, aka ex-marine Magic Fraga, a record that was only ever available on US military bases! The album also comes as a deluxe double CD pack with 30-page booklet and slipcase. Yo! Boombox also features the stunning photography of Sophie Bramly, one of a very select group of photographers (alongside Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, and Joe Conzo) who were allowed full access to document the exciting early days of hip-hop in New York. These first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party-on-the-block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s.
