The “The Balancing Act” album title is inspired by the way Statik balances his responsibilities as a father, as an artist, as a producer and as a DJ. Jay Worthy, the Lndn Drgs front man, originally hails from Compton and -- along with frequent collaborators like Kamaiyah and G Perico -- he's part of a new crop of rappers that keep the sound and feel of the '90s G-funk era alive However, after moving to NYC for a period of time he linked up with NYC producer Harry Fraud (Smoke DZA, Curren$y, Meyhem Lauren, French Montana, etc). Fraud is a real New York kinda guy, but it turns out he's also really good at crafting the kind of West Coast-style bounce that Jay Worthy is perfect for. Initially, Worthy and Fraud got together to record the songs “Uncle Brad” ft. ElCamino and “Backpage Freestyle” ft. Grafh & Daytona, both of which are included on “Two4One”, Worthy’s first solo project, released as a series of two single collaborations in 2020, and via Get On Down on both colored and black vinyl. However, these bi-coastal collaborators didn’t stop there and they soon found themselves recording enough songs for an entire project of their own, with Worthy penning his lyrics in Harry’s Brooklyn based studio at the same time Harry was producing the music for what became “Eat When You’re Hungry, Sleep When You’re Tired”, their seven song project (ep) featuring Larry June, Guapdad 4000, ElCamino (Griselda), G-Perico, Band Gang Lonnie Bands and Big Body Bes. The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable, and his work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and many more has long been cemented in the annals of hip-hop history. It was during his time as a member of seminal Detroit group Slum Village however that ranks as among his greatest. His work with rappers Baatin and T3 would be a strong influence upon
modern rappers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and earn widespread critical praise, and comparisons to other legendary groups like A Tribe Called Quest. In speaking retrospectively on their most famous album ""Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1"", The Roots' drummer Questlove has said of the release that it "single-handedly birthed neo-soul."

J Dilla has been gone for over 10 years now, and Slum Village has moved on from their time with the legendary beatsmith, recruiting new members along the way. Despite this, new Dilla compositions are still being discovered, and his legacy continues to be shared and celebrated with a modern hip-hop audience. Pay Jay Productions, Inc. was the company James Dewitt “J Dilla” Yancey founded in 2001 to house his production company and his publishing company. The Estate of James Yancey has revived Pay Jay as a functioning imprint, and is announcing its release of J Dilla's long lost vocal album, The Diary. The first single features "Anthem" b/w “Trucks” - two of the songs J Dilla recorded in late 2001 and early 2002 as he put the finishing touches on what was supposed to be an album featuring his raps over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others.
These two tracks, however, were produced by Dilla himself and come straight from multi-track masters found on 2” tape shortly after Dilla’s passing in 2006. These songs have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla’s original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla’s vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present. Rounding out this 12” is Dilla’s original mix of “Trucks,” discovered as a two-track demo mix. We’ve included this mix as it features an alternate version of Dilla’s vocals and a third verse not found on Dilla’s final sessions for this song.

Slaine's upcoming studio album "The King Of Everything Else", is scheduled for an August 19th release date through Suburban Noize. Curren$y (aka Spitta Andretti) and Fraud previously connected on Cigarette Boats, an EP they dropped in 2012 as a Sound Cloud only release. “The Marina” sees their chemistry is still as sharp as ever, with each artist lending what we think are career-best efforts.
“The Marina” is a showcase for Spitta's understated, but clever brand of lyricism. Mr. Fraud also delivers, crafting a soundscape as dynamic as Spitta's subtly versatile flows. The chemistry between the two would make Walter White envious.

Chicago wordsmith Verbal Kent (Ugly Heroes) and Spanish-German beat maker Superior have joined forces. The resulting full-length album “Half My Life” is set for release via Below System Records. Known for his mixture of verbal gymnastics with humor and everyday pathos, Verbal Kent delivers what might be among his most personal rhymes.
Speaking on the significance of the album title Kent said “Half My Life signifies the amount of time I’ve been at this. I started rhyme writing seriously at 18/19 years old and never looked back. I’ve always felt grounded in my expectations, fame and fortune was never a factor for me. I love making music enough to do it seriously for 20 years now, and I doubt I’ll ever be able to stop.”
Superior’s creative use of psychedelic, rock, soul and funk samples create an eclectic yet cohesive musical backdrop. Some examples of the chemistry include the first single “The Little Things” which is Kent’s version of the love joint (see Common’s “The Light”) but
more in Seinfeld territory. Sample lyric “Dr. Kirschenbaum’s my dentist and now he’s your dentist and that goes for any practitioner of medicines.”
Tracks like “Classic Shit” and “For The Love” are deeply biographical tracks while there is also straight quality emceeing tracks including “Go Get The Dank” and “Steven Hawking Walking”. Guests that get it in on the album include Vic Spencer, Sonnyjim, Recognize Ali and Lance Ambu.
Initially linking up on a track on Superior’s album “The Journey” (released early 2017) the duo realized that they were a good combination. Speaking on the album process Kent said “when Superior started sending me beats I started realizing his beats are emotional, so I let them lead the way as a result a lot of the content is reflective.”

Legendary Detroit emcee Phat Kat and Berlin bred DJ/Producer DJ Dister present their new album “The S.O.S. Project”.

Standing for "So Old School" Dister's soulful but dusty-break laden beats (which defined the J Dilla/Slum Village era) provides the perfect backdrop for Kat's fiery 90's honed flow. Speaking on how they linked up Dister said "we initially recorded a track called "Rappin Ass Rapper's" on my album Consistent Knockouts (2015). The vibe was so dope that we decided to do a whole project together."

The first evidence of this chemistry is in the single "Revolt For Change" a scathing social commentary as Kat says is "about police brutality excessive force and how our citizens are being treated like animals and the current situation our country and community is in." Other tracks salute The "D" (as his home city is known) and retrace his personal Hip-Hop history ("The Monument" feat DJ Dez) or relate tales from the crime side ("Shots", "Storm").

An emcee's emcee Phat Kat (aka Ronnie Euro) initially came up in the mid 90's as part of a duo with J Dilla (then known as Jay Dee) known as 1st Down. Though legal troubles halted the group's momentum, Kat and Dilla collaborated consistently over the following years. Kat's recorded output also includes work with Black Milk, Slum Village, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Obie Trice and Flying Lotus. He has also toured worldwide including frequent trips to Europe to perform.

With a resume that stretches back fifteen years, DJ Dister was a strong part of the Berlin, Germany true-school Hip-Hop scene. In 2005 as part of the Born 2 Roll crew, he helped to organize the Born 2 Roll night, a monthly event at the Cassiopeia Club. This popular event drew thousands of attendees for over a decade and also drew performances from such names as KRS-One and De La Soul. He released two albums as a producer including the debut ROLL WIT DIS (2013) which featured appearances from Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, KRS-One, Fashawn and others. 2015’s Consistent Knockouts featured Jeru The Damaja, eMC, Phat Kat and others. Dister now resides in Los Angeles, CA and is working on several EP's and albums currently.

Chopped Herring presents the CD version of Stranger Danger’s debut project “How to Lose Friends and Alienating People”. If you expect nothing but grimy underground hip hop from LA on this one, you got it all right!
From the producer of the amazing “Tha Roach Killaz LP” from last year on Herring comes Stranger Danger's debut solo album produced entirely by the LA native himself. Incredible sample choices mixed up with drug laced experimentalism makes this, along with his previous production outing, one of the nicest debuts in a minute. Also included among the variety of guest MC's is the kid A.F.R.O.
The CD title pays obviously contribution to the 2001 book by Toby Young. In 1995 high-flying British journalist Toby Young left London for New York to become a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. But things didn't quite go according to plan. “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People” is Toby Young's hilarious account of the five years he spent looking for love in all the wrong places and steadily working his way down the New York food chain, from glossy magazine editor to crash-test dummy for interactive sex toys.

Shylow is a DJ, producer and MC from Durham, Canada. “Please Listen To My Demos” first released in Canada on very limited cassette only back in the year 2000.
Shylow has a reputation for putting on high energy live performances; bringing down the house countless times solo, and has shared the stage with many underground artists such as Cage, Yakballz, Ill Bill, Aceyalone, Boot Camp Click, Mr.Lif, Camu Tao, Red Clay and Jedi Mind Tricks.
Also records as half of the group First Division. along with his counterpart Expertise, and is the founding member of The Bomb Shelta Association, a crew of artists who recorded an album entitled "Rebirth" in 97/98. The album was never released commercially but garnered critical praise and gained worldwide recognition through word of mouth, hand to hand sales, and the internet.
One of the standout songs on the "Rebirth" album was Shylow's solo track "S.T.O.M.P". It caught the ear of hip-hop legend Chuck D of Public Enemy, who in an issue of Elemental magazine, as well as on his website www.rapstation.com rated the song the number one mp3 download of the year 2000.
In 2003, he became the first Canadian hip-hop artist to have a 'debut' single (Moment Of Clarity b/w The Greatest) released on a reputable American label (Fatbeats/Breakthru) featuring production by a well-known and sought after American producer (Ayatollah).
Is credited as Co-Executive Producer for Marco Polo's Soulspazm/Rawkus debut album Port Authority, which was nominated for a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) in 2008.
