What If It Works’ first release, minimum wage maximum joy arrives by way of newcomer 11:68PM. Produced in Berlin in the winter of 2020 and mixed & mastered at the newly minted Brewery Studios, minimum wage maximum joy’s five tracks are precision-tooled for the club, showcasing 11:68PM’s veneration for UK-leaning house and techno.

11:68PM’s moniker, as well as the EP title minimum wage maximum joy draws on the artist’s experience of balancing the grind of the 9-5 with dreams of realizing his creative vision. The skittish breaks on “Bluff Mind State” and “Sway”’s glitchy “Call Mohandes Dub” reveal this state of mind, while “Vertical Mobility” reveals a playful side with its irresistible acid bassline and soaring synths.

In 11:68PM’s words: “Writing the record in the evenings in my bedroom on one of the loudest streets of Neukölln, after I had clocked out from work, I found myself in the ever-present struggle of being artistically active while making ends meet. In making this EP, I decided to prioritize my own desires and not wait for some hypothetical moment to pursue this project that might never arrive.”

Visually, this is underscored by Philipp Pess’ striking artwork, depicting the gaunt face of a man whose tired eyes hint at a lifetime spent in front of a screen.

With minimum wage maximum joy, 11:68PM offers a compelling glimpse into a new generation of Berlin’s left-of-centre club producers.

291outer space, is the side project of the well know Italian alternative band 291out alongside sound engineer Ivan “Flyme” Cibien.

“너머 - Beyond” is a space-electronic concept EP: the songs are sung en]rely in Korean, and the EP cover and inserts are illustrated by Simone "Mega" Antonucci. The insert itself includes the original lyrics conceived at the origin of the project: “Trascendence Rain Forest ". The track, which opens and closes the disc in its two different arrangements, is a poe]c and philosophical interpretation of the origin of humanity and the ul]mate meaning of life, an invitation to flee from our uncertain destiny and apocalyptic post-pandemic present to reconnect with the cosmic flow of the planet.

A resounding exhortation to go “beyond” the here and now.

In “너머- Beyond” 291outer space play tributes to a variety of legends of the world surrounding Kosmische Musik and Sci-Fi Sound (among all, Vangelis, Shulze, Jarre, Parson, Moroder, Carpenter). Their music is here re-imagined in a contemporary key and therefore tradition, and innovation are united in the search of a sound for the future that's yet to be discovered.

Our new slice of wax comes this time from outer space made somewhere between unknown galaxies and black holes. For this special occasion 30drop provides six cuts of futuristic techno but with a ravey approach in a time backspin that brings us back to the 90’s via Sci-Fi, reminding in some way of the early UR records, when Mad Mike and Jeff Mills worked together on the soundtrack of the future. This is our first mini LP with 3 cuts per side. The first cut is Brain reset, the short drone intro soon leads to a relentless groove made of repetitive sequences over a fast groove. Intense and obsessive. Mental Understanding brings more minimalistic ingredients, absence of hi hats, just kick drum and synth lines. Brain effervescence showcases the infamous 90’s hoover sound bringing the rave element and 303 acid lines all merged in a lawless and dense mixture. B side opens with Self awareness, starting with ethereal atmospheres, spiced with resonant bleeps and micro drones in a beat-less exercise. Klapaucjusz brings back the 90’s feeling again with analogue arpeggios and melodies, again over a clean groove in a Detroit oriented number. Closing the release, Knowledge, a space odyssey of strings, abstract synth lines and flotation. Pitting Anne Imhof-collaborator Billy Bultheel in a ravenous session with Iezzi and a host of input from Naked, Dylan Kerr, Ivan Cheng, and Patrick Belaga; ’33-69’ stages an opulent complex of numerological enigmas and swarming spirits unbound from tradition. Disrupting disciplines and paradigms in each cut, they enact a ravishing rush of dancefloor drama and tormented cabaret that feels like the 1920’s rushing into the 2020’s, resulting in a time-sick and urgent avalanche of ideas from Leider or Baroque barbed in noise and hardcore rave alacrity, like a performance art piece held in the midst of Berghain or Kit Kat club’s most spangled, gloriously messy moments.

As the first C.A.N.V.A.S. release of 2022, ’33-69’ builds on the sprawling ideas and feelings outlined by Olan Monk, Lugh, Elvin Branhdi, Michael Speers and Alpha Maid since 2018 with a strident confidence that meets the new decade head-on, face-first, as it gets to grips with new cultural schisms and energies. Tearing out with the shearing digital noise and soaring elegance of Ivan Cheng’s vox on ‘369’, it prangs out between machine-gunned trance techno in ‘Fireworks’ to operatic pipe organ and string processional ‘Sexus’ starring countertenor Steve Katona (collaborator of Pan Daijing and specialist in Bach recitals), beside an extraordinary mauling of industrial and BM ritualism on ‘The knife’ featuring a feral Naked in its seat-edge first half.

The second half slips below the belt with a virulent thrust in the panel-beating techno tribalism of ‘Pigeons’, and hinges around brusque techno triplets with the cabaret keys and Italianate trance motifs of ‘Sirens’, before PAN’s cellist-composer Patrick Balaga helps pull it back from the brink in ‘Thomas The Obscure’, lending a fine temper to the crazed/reflective narrative before it launches in a full out techno assault on ‘Heaven’s blade’ and the smoky, distorted growl of ’Speed and beer’ makes perhaps the most unhinged and ultimately moving use of a brass section you’ll likely hear for time.

Madrid based artist _asstnt returns to his Opera 2000 label with a four tracks EP entitled "Love War" EP.

At the age of 14, _asstnt found in music a way to tell stories. In Madrid, his hometown, he discovered techno and embodied this musical genre to turn it into his own language. With his particular style, he bursts onto the scene again with this EP called "Love War". Love and war, two antonyms that end up merging through a mixture of romantic and melancholic sounds, along with the dirty roars characteristic of hardtechno. This trip through good lovin', a journey between heaven and hell, features the version of his admired partner, SlugoS, who adds the finishing touch on this four-track EP.

"Love War" delves into the origins of the artist and dares to mix flamenco rhythms with acid. The zapateado and the cajon, two of the most characteristic sounds of Spanish folklore, are presented in the song accompanied by an hypnotic vocal that is soaked in techno 303. The journey continues with "Catwoman Spotlight", which crosses a rainy and gray city with a seductive female voice as a guide. A sharp, and metallic snare takes over to give way to a warlike melancholy that takes us to heaven and gets broken by a stimulating and unsympathetic electric guitar.

The end of the celestial opens the gates of hell for us with "Track For The Apocalypse". The frenetic start is on a hard beat, a beastly crunch that progressively introduces us into the apocalyptic atmosphere with aggressive percussion. The atmosphere develops with a paralyzing break in which we can hear the passage of the riders threatening with the arrival of the end. The Berlinbased artist from Madrid, SlugoS, does a reading of the song at a 4/4 rhythm while offering a respite to the bass drum that maintains the crunch of _asstnt injecting his hard and raw style into the track.

When two musicians intensively work together for a period of time, at some point the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. If Paul Boex and Dave Miller hadn't already reached that status under their Abstract Division moniker, they certainly have now, with the release of Midnight Ensemble, their first full length album.

Those who have followed the duo since their early days of playing dj-sets together, know that it's hard to define their style anywhere beyond techno or even electronic music, as it is ever evolving and always dependent on the time of the day or night. When listening to this album, the resemblance between their unpredictable selection behind the decks and the eclectic range of subgenres on this album is more obvious than ever before. Midnight Ensemble could be interpreted as an ode to nightlife; a reminiscence of all that happens between dusk and dawn, captured and compressed into about one hour of music. An hour in which they so delicately time their changing of styles and tempos, always reading the room and always being one step ahead of the crowd.

This album is a reflection of that skill, starting its journey with soothing, moodsetting ambient, followed by timeless pieces of Detroit and dubtechno. A daring electro cut providing a refreshing break from the four to the floor tradition, only to be followed by the stripped down sound the duo is so comfortable with.

The final minutes consist of experimental breaks, one last banger to pull out the last bits of energy that is left and a beautiful outro, which concludes the allnighter vibe. There are no open endings, it doesn't make you want to stay in the dark forever. Rather it makes you want to close your eyes one last time before walking outside to see the sun come up again before going home, overwhelmed and satisfied.

The Drumcode founder is measured when it comes to signing music to his own imprint, biding his time till the stars align. Live duo Aderal deliver their debut EP Ribah on Blush Recordings. Dropping on 18th November, the release marks their first EP, platformed by Verona-based label Blush Recordings. Ribah channels industrial techno and EBM, embodying sultry sounds composed of winding melodies and raw, noise-driven atmospheres. Aderal explain the concept of the EP. ‘Almost all the aspects of “Ribah” trace back to where we started making music together. The artwork is a photo of a ladder leading to our studio in a derelict building, formerly a primary school. It’s where we met, developed our sound and played our first jams.’ “bznv” opens the EP with a foreboding feel, blending harsh percussive elements with steel-capped drums. Whispery vocals whirl beneath the surface, evoking a ghostly soundscape. An uncompromising intro that displays Aderal’s aesthetic from the get-go. “rbh” follows suit with a distorted synthline and huge drums, illustrating the duo’s penchant for corrosive beats aligned with their live jam approach. Italian DJ and producer VSK delivers a bone-chilling remix of “BZNV,” stitching slithery grooves between stomping drums. The perfect peak-time production. Belgian artist 6siss closes the EP with his remix of “RBH.” Known for penning militant moods, he goes hard and serves a menacing mutation of erratic drums paired with a demonic melody. Proceed with caution. Based in Reggio Emilia in Italy, Nicolò and Reda, aka Aderal, are a live duo who produce techno in its all sprawling forms. Since 2016, the pair have combined their love for music production and created industrial textures, broken-beat techno, and EBM-flavoured melodies. Their musical output evokes shadowy atmospheres and somber moods, simmering with a dancefloor feel. After years of experimenting and crafting an identity that strays from the predictable and instead focuses on a collision of sonic palettes and genres, Aderal are writing their own story—one set to twist and turn, just like their music.

Albert van Abbe & Jochem Paap join forces for General Audio. Recorded at Willem Twee studios in Den Bosch, General Audio explores a unique and esoteric approach to sound creation. Using test and measure equipment from the 1950’s, originally designed for the maintenance of various audio and radio transmitters, van Abbe and Paap create otherworldly walls of sound and dense rhythmic abstractions with an early form of synthesis. Rudimentary signals are combined and processed before being committed to tape via mic’s set up to capture the Willem Twee studio’s unique acoustics. The equipment itself predates the invention of the analog, modular synthesizers developed in the 70’s that are now commonplace in many studios. The record opens with 220Lock-in, a gently undulating drone composition. Effervescent at the top end and fathoms deep at the bottom, it shifts ominously with ring modulated tones that build and then give way to thick washes of white noise. A single synth flourish provides a surprising final moment. The record continues with WZ-1Wobbel Zusatz, a low-sunk percussive piece with an off-kilter rhythm and wet spring reverb doing the bulk of the sonic heavy lifting. Deep in the mix, delicate shifts in pitch and tone deliver a kind of arcane musicality, and as the recording approaches its final moments the piece descends into an exhilarating chaos, with sonic components falling slowly by the wayside. Pegelmesser riffs on a similar reverb characteristic, but this time a driven, arp-like lead propels the work forward. Crisp shifts in colour and distortion arrive unexpectedly, providing a curious musical sensation once more – and harsher moments of feedback break up the recording in its later stages. On Rel 3L 212c LC-pi the pair strip things back, with more present percussive components and subtle distortion lines, before Wandel ups the ante with a corrosive dirge broken up by sporadic submerged synth hits. The penultimate recording SR 250 Boxcar Averager shows off impressive pitch modulation, resulting in a variety of intriguing sensations. Cinematic and remarkably visual, it charts a strange and affecting course, the synth lead underpinned by a repetitive percussive motif and all manner of sends delivering fascinating details. Nim Bin closes the record and once more van Abbe and Paap invite that subtle musicality into the recording. A tight VCO modulation drives the piece while various percussive synth strikes provide a kind of rhythmic component, though they remain untethered to any time signature – a neat conclusion to an intriguing and exploratory record.

The ‘Metallurgy’ EP forthcoming on Turnend Tapes sees Japanese artist Hirotaka Umetani transmit four club orientated tracks through a UK bass lens, delineating from past musical excursions and so marking a turning point of his works. Indicative of this shift is the vast and varied sources of inspiration Hirotaka has tapped into in creating ‘Metallurgy’. Translating visual into sound through Hirotaka’s own experience, bare witness to granular detail made macro through swathes of sound design kinetically akin to the flurry of mineral-rich hot water springs, seething in chemical harmony.

Entwining impressions of the past with forecasts of the future Hirotaka deftly connects the dots between the sounds stemming from the alchemy of metal and it’s interplay with the natural environment as we proceed ever closer to organic-synthetic assimilation.’

Hot on the heels of his preliminary EP on Stroboscopic Artefacts, Embryo, which paved the way to the present album, and two years after the landing of his 2016-released inaugural LP, Montagne Trasparenti, Mannequin helmsman Alessandro Adriani returns with his highly anticipated full-length debut for SA, Morphic Dreams. Throughout eleven cuts painstakingly executed but lacking not an iota of the fresh, spontaneous oomph that made his sound stand out of the crowd of techno producers to have emerged over the past decade, Adriani lays the foundations to a suspended sound imaginarium, governed by its own rules and principles of gravity. Revolving around the notions of sublimation and quest for inner balance, Morphic Dreams is comprised of four distinct sequences, conceived and designed as reflections of four mental states, each of them linked to the four alchemical elements i.e. Water, Earth, Air and Fire here represented by the A, B, C and D-sides. Fluid and enveloping, the A-side bathes the listener in some zero-G uterine vortex, pitching and rolling from the slo-burning exotic sensuality and tribal spell of The Tropical Year to the trunk-bending, arpeggiated fast-track pulse of Storm Trees, through Raindances feverish electro swing. Entering a further abrasive, minerally rich phase, the B-side unleashes Adrianis dark side with optimum conviction. Deeply anchored in earthly materiality, this new evolution stage starts off to the frantic Italo bass of Dissolving Images, rushing headlong into a kaleidoscopic maelstrom of fractured reflections and nasty Giallo-like ambience. The delirious body stretch sequence then rather abruptly swerves onto a calmer flux with Dust/Mist, a much enticingly hip-swaying collaboration with Simon Crab, ex-member of the seminal 80s UK industrial-experimental band Bourbonese Qualk, before Casting The Runes engulfs us into a tormented world of swollen eeriness and disquieting esoterism. Back to a widescreen showcase of droney distortions, nasty acid swashes and other quirky drum programming, Hors De Combat opens a new chapter, shortly followed by the playful bass intricacies and modular jeu-de-piste of Invisible Seekers, featuring Avian affiliate and longtime friend Shawn OSullivan. A further mind-expanding piece, C-side closer Crow deploys its blackened wings wide and high as a chaos of martial percussions and liquefying synths slivers crash past the red-hot skyline. A fluttering melodic interlude, Things About To Disappear blazes a clean trail for Make Words Split And Crack to flourish, slowly but surely blooming into a nonstop grandiose twelve minute-shy finale geared up with the stirring cacophonic force of a Ligetian symphony and something of an epic-scale Kubrickian soundtrack.

Another strong collaboration for Stately Records as they celebrate their third release, together with Swiss Dub Techno wizard Alessandro Crimi. Already producing music for over 20 years from his headquarters in Baden, Switzerland Alessandro is playing a big part in the development of the beautiful sound of Dub Techno. Besides his own productions he is the founder of the label Waehlscheibe, which has seen 10 vinyl releases and celebrate their 10th anniversary this year. Also anno 2022 there is a lot of magic coming from his hands, with a recent sold out record on Etui Records, and more in the future he will be part of a great VA coming out on Roger Gerressen’s Irenic. His work for Stately Records is once again a super diverse ep, with music for every mood. 2 cuts for the dancefloor, with ‘Transcendent’ sending us on an extended melancholic trip & ‘The Space Between Everything’ being the more uplifting work. Besides that, both sides are accompanied by 2 experimental cuts. On the A-side we find the amazing ambient work ‘When Darkness Turns into Light’ and on the B-side the title track ‘Moonward’, a fast paced, bass heavy track which shows no mercy.

Three distinctly outer space-themed cuts from Greece's Alex Celler, each with a linear minimal/tech skeleton that has other, interloping musical influences draped elegantly and classily across it. 'Ancient Astronuats' has the weird, wired mystical stirrings of early Black Dog about it, complete with melting, bendy electro notations that coax it along and add a psychedelic dimension. 'Stargate To Cosmos' has a playful, Drexciyan feel to it, with crunchy, organic drum beats flirting alongside the more rigid electrics. 'Object In The Sky' is the most minimal of the pack, sleek and stalker-like, but still contains enough action - mainly floating around up there in the ether - to hold and build attention.

Alex Lentini & Stomp Boxx return to Drumcode following January’s outstanding contribution ‘Natural Desire’. We’re thrilled to have another legend of the underground on O.C.D. : Alex Martin. A very well respected mainstay in the Spanish Techno scene, Alex’s career spans 3 decades under different production aliases and releases on seminal labels like F-Com, Klang Elektronik, Pias, Cosmos Records, Minifunk, Boozoo, Pagoda Recordings, many of which are now sought-after collectors material. Alex is a very good friend of the label since long and a while ago he shared with us his DAT archives filled with unreleased material from the early years of his career. It took us a while, but we are now ready to give him the rightly deserved space on our Secret Sun series. This is the first volume of a collection of never heard before music from Alex Martin under some of his several aliases, retrieved from the vaults to be finally made available to the world.
