It’s been a while since we last heard from Steve Summers, one of the many musical aliases of former Brooklyn and Berlin resident turned Chicago-based producer Jason Letkiewicz. When he last landed on proudly Chicagoan imprint Clear with the robust and unearthly “Artificial Light” EP, it was on the back of nine years spent building up Steve Summers as a purveyor of forthright club cuts that pushed at the limits of acceptability. That was 2017. In the three years since, Letkiewicz has prioritized projects that indulge different sides of his complex musical persona. There was the critically acclaimed, all-action Mutant Beat Dance “record album booklet” on Rush Hour – a collaboration with Melvin Oliphant III and Beau Wanzer – and then the EBM, electro and industrial-influenced grooves of Opposing Currents on Artificial Dance. 2018 also saw him release the sophomore set from his 1980s horror soundtrack-infused Death Commando project, while in 2019 Letkiewicz finally put out his first album under his given name – the picturesque new age and ambient movements of “The Reflecting Pool” on Into The Light. But that was then. Now Letkiewicz has finally donned the Steve Summers pseudonym again for a return to Clear that’s defiantly intense and otherworldly in tone, “Counter-Factuals” is powered primarily by the kind of psychedelic acid lines and thrusting machine drums that have long been a hallmark of Chicago house. This is no nostalgia-fest though, with Letkiewicz’s take on “acid” being more abstract and unorthodox than the music of his predecessors. Proof of this analysis arrives straight away, with EP opener “Counter- Factuals” ratcheting up the intensity through waves of hallucinatory acid lines, blunted electronics, druggy male vocal samples and clanking machine beats. Letkiewicz takes similar sonic approach on “People Watching”, whose full-throttle approach cuts a path through jacking acid house, surging EBM and the more dystopian aspects of 1980s industrial music. Over on side B, Letkiewicz combines all of these sounds and inspirations on a cut that pivots around the twin attractions of trance-inducing acid lines and hypnotic analogue beats. Clocking in at a fraction less than nine minutes, the track surges forward relentlessly on a tornado of off-key electronics, fizzing Tb-303 acid lines and barely audible speech snippets. It seems a fitting conclusion to one of Letkiewicz’s most impactful releases to date.

Lazarus is back on Shaw Cuts with "The Rescue", a swashbuckling tale of sheer heroism, revolutionary sentiment and resistance in the face of oppression.

Following the fall of the Sung Dynasty, minister Wen, who pens a patriotic song to inspire the nation, is imprisoned by the conquering Mongols. Sung patriots plot to free the lord from the Celestial Prison by having themselves arrested and a spy release them once inside. But the prison general sets a deadly trap. "Harbinger", its heavy drums, mystic pads and untamed spirit perfectly describes the menacing scene inside the prison.

With the help of free-spirited hero Le Heru, patriot Bai Yaerh escapes the carnage. With more fighters in tow, he returns to the prison with a new plan to tunnel underground. Yet this too is a cunning trap that forces Le Heru to cover up the heroes' escape. The intense buildup of "Light The Torch" with its echoing chords and noisy elements, invigorates and drives the pack forward.

After convincing a Mongol-raised guard captain to join them, the patriots make a last attempt to save lord Wen by posing as Mongols and slipping into the jail. They finally reach Wen who has starved himself to death. The shifting drums and emotional synths of "Sinus Node" sets the serene tone needed to compensate for the loss, signaling a promising new dawn.

The legion finds hope while battling out of the prison to preserve the moving song the minister composed before his demise. "Cyto" and its melancholic mood filled with revolving breaks, powerful arpeggios and shimmering drums, leads to a shocking and disturbing end that is hard to handle.

The second release on TB Arthur's (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with Magda as Blotter Trax. The pair first encountered each other at the famous Motor City record store Record Time, when Detroit artist BMG introduced his then co-workers Magda and Derek Plaslaiko to Arthur, who was visiting the shop from Chicago. Sometime after that meeting, Magda and Arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4" tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1A is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. Full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2A then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. Last of all, 2B snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. This, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.

Megastructure_ Proudly presents Flesh Reconstruct, a collection of reworks of tracks of Hakai’s first EP, NO Flesh Shall BE Spared. This series of alternate-universe takes on the originals features four major heavyweights of the techno scene – Inhalt Der Nacht, Phase Fatale, Blush Response, and a rare solo remix appearance from Christina Sealey of Orphx. Each mix takes a drastically different approach. Inhalt Der Nacht’s remix of Invading Executioner features clean vocals from Blush Response, something not heard since 2014. Once buried in the original mix, they are now at the forefront. Next up is Christina Sealey’s mix of Anxiety, featuring haunting war horns and organic analog grooves, along with new vocal contributions from Hakai member Jagoda Nagel. Phase Fatale’s mix of Ningen starts off the B-side with a steady broken beat techno workout. This serves as a perfect transition into Blush Response’s remix of Bury Me Alive, which is a full on noise assault at warp speeds. This one is not for the faint of heart! The mix of Dub and Techno is not exactly new. However, JPatterson found a way to combine these genres in a way that checks all the boxes to be classified as fresh and exciting. His rustic Prog-a-Dub grooves burst with reckless danceability, the sound of his tumpet has an emotional intensity that simply doesn’t exist in the digital music domain. But the catchiest element of his track Elevator is yet another one: It’s his voice and its contagious casualness. The Dub Version of this track is a bright summer day turned into rhythm and melody. It gets even more exciting than this, as a hand-selected group of party heads from the Acker family has remixed Elevator. Timboletti turned it into a slow, delirious afterhour groove (digital only). Dole & Kom redesigned it into an understated anthem. And Mollono.Bass created an energetic rhythm environment for the weightless trombone that feels like it’s vibrating right in middle between the original and the Dub Version of Elevator.

After further research it has been discovered that, Experiment Zero is the product of Dona, aka Dj Plant Texture and Mike Tansella Jr. of Son of Traders, both products of the ancient mercantile city of Bari in Southern Italy. Previous works from these artists have been featured on Creme Organization, Gravitational Waves, Unknown to Unknown, and Illian Tapes. All sonic experimentation was recorded in one take to capture the raw energy of instantaneous collaborative sound craft operating in flux. His track “Espacio Profundo” is a deep, beautiful house jam with an almost disco bassline, perhaps different from what you’ve heard from him but no less outstanding.

Lerosa has been releasing bangers through a variety of labels throughout the world, with his album on Uzuri and EP for Apartment being the most recent examples. Moscoman continues his Treisar journey with the stunning Snake & Pygmy EP. On the A side lies the gorgeous trance inducing Snake In A Hat, an uplifting intergalactic voyage gliding through layers of synths, twinkling piano notes and melancholic melodies that skillfully progresses into pure bliss. On the flip, the pace slows down with Pirate Of The Lost Ark. This dark mesmeric number features Moscoman’s signature gritty bass style, rolling snare drums and swirling synths all mantled in mind bending effects. The bpm rises again on the closing track Forget The Rest, an irresistible amalgam of dreamy keys and rumbling drums, punctuated by a catchy electronic funk.

Snake & Pygmy is the second of twelve releases for Moscoman’s Treisar label.

Alien Alien are respected producers Rodion and Hugosan. 5 years old, born, raised and based in Berlin, but all at home in the club. Nitam’s debut Retold EP (U-TON 06) already set the tone in 2015, and here we are three catalogue numbers and 14 months later with his second 12" release on Unterton taking a similar line as his debut four-tracker did: new varied sonic themes with an overall fresh sound. Although still being young of age, Nitam outlines once again his interest in dance music from the late 80s and early 90s, presenting himself schooled by classic Detroit House as well as Chicago Acid House, but all without limiting himself to a restricted pallet of styles or catering towards musical expectations.

As we love our music multifaceted, we love our artwork colorful. So, after PINK, RED, ORANGE and BLUE, we'll give you GREEN, the fifth out of seven records that we release in celebration of our 50th catalogue number. Again, the captivating artwork is the brainchild of Leipzig's graphic duo Doppeldenk. And don't get misled: there are no greenhorns amongst the artists assembled on this EP. You know that moment when you dance in the club, self-forgotten, the everyday life has no meaning and only those dancers next to you count. Iron Curtis' AGAINST MY WINDOW (DAZED MIX) is a pretty perfect soundtrack for this scene. The dreamy pads are an invitation to stop thinking and just enjoy the moment. At the same time, the elegant House affair has enough drum pressure for long lasting dancing extravaganzas. Leipzig's Perm is coming up with the straightforward and pumping Electro bliss called VLIW, a track that is perfectly balanced in its urgent desire for Metropolis but also heartbreaking moments. On the flipside there's the first signal from Uncanny Valley regular CVBox after almost three years without any transmission. In advance to his forthcoming EP he is back in typical fashion, delivering CAT CUT CLAPS, a mean Dub-Acid-monster that wraps you up with inimitable sci-fi narratives coming straight up from his machinery. Finally, we got the first track from Dispo 5000, the new project from our beloved Jacob Stoy, together with his longtime buddy and creative partner Felix Meyer. Their KLINGENBERG is a great jam that mixes up the tender side of House with a Kraut and Cosmic approach.
