Licks From The Grotto came to life during two sessions in the summer of 2020. “I was swimming. I was jamming.” Rubio recalls. His studio resides in an 18th-century sea fortress accessible only by water. It’s a suited environment for capturing raw emotive moments. Rubio’s encounters with machines create a pleasant amount of unconventional truthfulness as well as an exhilarating atmosphere. Though enigma hangs 'round his shoulders like a heavy cloak his music is very warm and inviting, like a big wave lifting your feet off the ground.

The third release on Derek Russo’s own Broad Channel imprint “Special Occasion" EP arrives loaded with a wide palate of club swagger for any hour of the party. “Celestial Machine” is the A1 rough and rumbling trip, steered by a wiggly Sh101 bass line and anchored by a thunderous sub bass and tenacious, rattling percussion. A floating pad briefly takes the edge off before lurching back. The sounds here are inspired and shaped by the aching cacophony of city life. “Yearning 4 Love” marries a Detroit inspired motif, with tasteful synth layering and bouncy, off-kilter drum programming. The result is an inquisitive banger, something different for the modern dance floor. On the flip side, the title track ‘Special Occasion’ drops the tempo to a chugging rhythm that swings from a funky break tucked underneath. Deranged piano chords open up to a sinister synth line, jangling guitar and a thick 80s bass line. The final track “Planet Sunset” closes out this EP with a soaring, introspective synth floating on top of a rolling breakbeat groove, disco fed bass work and Juno stabs that resolves into a wave of oozy pad chords - a sure piece for the late night discerning dance floor.

Title track Rob The Plants hones in on Moscoman’s ability to fuse together a range of techniques, culminating in a dance floor ready heavy hitter. An addictive and driving bassline plays on throughout, whilst a catchy vocal and warm guitar licks are intertwined. Gradually increasing in intensity and closing the EP Nishar Levad is an emotionally charged offering ladened with atmospheric synths, haunting guitar chords and an inviting groove.

Sōgi explores death and Japanese funerary rites from an anthropological point of view. This work reflects a contrast between modern and traditional ideas. It is comprised of four different acts: 1. Seppukku Routes the listener’s heart into the last minutes of the mind of a lost person, with no hope, sank in a sea of modern worries and low self-esteem. The piece is a tunnel of anxiety and desperation that ends in a traditional form of suicide. This act should be listened to from a first person perspective. 2. Sōgi Routes the listener’s mind into the funeral rite of the person who committed suicide. Minimal, contemplative and meditative tendencies. The prayers are full of shame and stupefaction after discovering the corpse. The other people cannot explain reasons of why he put an end to his life. This act should be listened to from a third person perspective. 3. Kasō Routes the listener’s body into the deceased’s soul during the cremation process. The sensation of being trapped inside the coffin, entering the furnace, full of culpability and rage about all those who feel shame, disappearing from the physical world. This act should be listened to from a first person perspective. 4. Onryō Routes the listener’s soul into another metaphysical plane. The purgatory itself as an entity, expels the vengeful soul of the deceased person, who blinded by grief, is coming back to a place between the physical and the astral plane. This act is influenced by the sounds and sensations that can be listened to, experienced and felt during an astral projection, when the person is traveling through different planes of reality.

The Aussie born, Germany based producer has been behind some of contemporary hard dance’s most exciting anthems, and follows up a release on 1Ø Pills Mate with this epic four-tracker for Lobster Theremin. Capturing all the frantic energy of a Tred set, I’m Not Like Other PPL gets underway with the title track - a punishing cut of stripped back, high velocity techno. Old horror film vocal samples induce an old school, psychedelic experience from within as the track builds and builds towards its imminent climax. ‘Dead Droid’ maintains a spooky feel throughout, it’s off-key atmospherics and marching rhythm channeling that deep emotion that Tred does so well, before ‘Secrets’ strays down a more melodic route with its trancey stabs and hands-in-the-hair energy, unting the worlds of hard and soft. ‘Don’t Need A Thing’ ventures further into this trance-world, with an albeit heavier cut than its predecessor. This is in-your-face hardcore trance - not for the faint hearted, for those that wish to totally immerse themselves in complete rave escapism. Pancratio: In the early 2000s, Korg invented, engineered and distributed four little instruments called Electribes. A drum machine, one analog modeling synthesizer, a sampler and a music workstation respectively called ER1, EA1, ES1 and EM1. Initially I always found it very difficult to use them in my studio, because they weren’t really fitting with the sound and the workflow. Between march and may 2020, I stopped worrying about trying to force the Electribes into the setup: i just put them together and started jamming, recording several tracks without using anything else apart from these little boxes and their own effects… eventually sampling a few things along the way with my headphones into the ES1. The title, as well as the aesthetic of the project, are inspired by a future-retro approach to early electronics and 70s Italian product advertisement.
