Psycho 2000 - A dark but funky theme that begins with an occulting Italian echo-oscillator drone that is soon followed by pulsating bass and breakbeat drums, leads to tremolo guitars, an ostinato on electric mandolas, strings climbing eloquent ladders, otherworldly electronics, and a cinematic finale. An evocation of a parade of wooden nutcracker soldiers elaborately dressed in gold-trimmed black uniforms down a wide avenue decorated with mardi gras beads and animal skulls upon golden cobblestones toward a tornado spiralling out purple-hued glissandos and curlicues of elephant smoke. White Spiritual - Head nod action, the twinkling of a late 60’s Vox Continental II with sickly transistors, the noodling matrix of an intergalactic telephone exchange carried on a bed of bouncy bass with a firm backbeat. The Johnny Guitar Watson-esque bite and sting of a ‘67 Teisco guitar preludes slabs of unison dark brown moog and organ giving way to the dance of fingers over the black naturals and white sharps of the Continental II.

Suite Crude Revue is a rotating cast of outstanding performers committed to an unshackled aesthetic. Produced, composed, and arranged by Daniel Zelonky, this single presents songs for imagined films. “Cowpoke Detox” might be termed “spaghetti jazz”. It’s a strange hybrid of spaghetti western style baritone guitar lines supporting jazz noir harmonies, creating a surreal backdrop for the tale of an unrepentant murderer, who feels regret only in terms of the consequences he’s facing. “Blue Ramen #1” is a lover’s lament, set to what might be termed a “Hollywood samba”: One imagines Los Angeles session players emulating samba for a commercial film, not an authentic Brazilian band. ‘Working with La Batteria was one of those rare cases in which, before anything else, we avoided the chance of working in terms of functional music, and we rather chose to focus on composition. The idea was about writing music which could have an influence on the film narrative, sometimes fueling it, or directing it, and hopefully making it unique and valuable. (Alex Infascelli).’ This is how the director describes his collaboration with La Batteria for the soundtrack of the documentary "Kill Me If You Can". This was certainly a special collaboration since Infascelli himself is a musician and therefore it was possible to establish a deep and fully aware exchange. Rather than setting the already edited film to music, we chose to follow an "old-fashioned" approach. Starting from an initial exchange with the director, the band composed a good number of tracks, and the film was then directly edited with the music. An unusual process that created a deep connection between music and the story itself. From a stylistic point of view, the original music follows two main directions: on the one hand there's the more melodic material dominated by choirs and acoustic instruments which explicitly refer to the great Italian film music tradition; while on the other we have the electronic soundwork, mostly produced through the use of analog synthesizers. As always, the group made use of a wide and eclectic range of instruments, and also involved two guest musicians: vocalist Davide Savarese and cellist Kyung Mi Lee. The music, produced by La Batteria, was recorded and mixed by Paolo Pecorelli at Studiosette (Rome), and was mastered by Danilo Silvestri. In addition to the twelve unreleased tracks, the soundtrack also includes two tracks (Lightless, Crepuscular) from La Batteria's album “Notes in the Dark” (Deneb/Flipper 2020).

About the composer:

Mark Mothersbaugh is a Grammy, Bafta, and Emmy nominated composer, producer, designer, and visual artist whose work has become part of the pop culture consciousness. He started his career as co-creator and front man for the seminal New Wave band Devo. Their Brian Eno/David Bowie-produced debut album “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo” was certified Gold before their hit album “Freedom of Choice” went Platinum.

For Cocaine Bear, Mothersbaugh wanted a score that reflected and captured the culture of the ’80s, with a personality that evolved as the decade’s music evolved. “At the beginning of the film, it starts out very pop,” Mothersbaugh says. “But as it goes through it, it gets heavier. The guitars change up from being acoustic and lighter to being distorted and more aggressive and there are synths throughout that provide a pulse that keeps things moving.”

To make it as authentic as possible, Mothersbaugh used the instruments that created some of the most distinctive and memorable sounds of the ’80s music scene. “Once we decided we were going to let it soak a bit in an ’80s sound, I went to the warehouse where I store equipment and my old Devo road cases full of synths,” Mothersbaugh says. “I pulled out old synths that we used on albums in the ’80s and used the same synths and a lot of the same amps and foot pedals.”

You know that feeling you get when you’re shook awake in mid-dream? You were teetering on the ledge of a building, or maybe trying to free a butterfly from a spider web while wearing cricket gloves? Perhaps you’re running late for a train and your short cut takes you through a bad part of town, you’re being followed but the ever changing reflection in the shop window is a younger you, a healthier person – with a better hairstyle. It’s an anxiety thing, an off-kilter almost world, best summed up on the soundtrack for Blue Velvet, David Lynch’s 1986 film that nods somnambulantly to the shadowy netherworld of film noir. Oedipal fantasies, finding a severed ear on your way home, voyeurism, crime and retribution, violence; they’re all there in abundance in the movie, a rotten sleazy commercialism set off against a set of strange situations that the edge of the seat is never far away from. And what soundtrack would suit such an experience? Of course a mix of orchestral pieces from composer and conductor Angelo Badalamenti inspired by Shoshtakovich’s 15th Symphony (which rumour has it Lynch played onset to create the ‘mood’) mixed up with trashy Hammond-led boogie and overblown baroque pop from Roy Orbison and Ketty Lester, suitable for any dive’s jukebox. That awkward mix plays itself out in Isabella Rossellini as Dorothy’s rendition of the song ‘Blue Velvet’ that melds beautifully and indeed hauntingly into ‘Blue Star’, a broken piece of vintage pop. Similarly, the track ‘Going Down To Lincoln’ with its narrative audio shtick takes all of the previously-mused elements to create a perfectly disjointed travelogue. The soundtrack album starts with Bernard Hermann-styled Hitchcock-esque strings and violin slashes, which dally before deconstructing the themes and motifs into a disturbing procession that climaxes with Julee Cruise’s funereal ‘Mysteries Of Love’, a fittingly titled epilogue to an epic that concludes with the hero’s true love’s reality of a simplistic birdsong dream from earlier in the film. It’s a cyclical trip that feeds directly back to the beginning and, yes, there’s that severed ear again, now ant infested laying on the ground, proving that dreams become real, or is it reality that becomes a dream?

During the '60s and '70s, three distinguished gentlemen who had built their careers playing French-made exotic jazz (Roger Roger, Nino Nardini and orchestra leader Eddie Warner) met each evening in the Ganaro recording studio. They mainly experimented -or simply played- with keyboards that looked like prototypes of spaceships. Flying high on whimsical and joyful inspiration, the improbable trio used their strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that, at that time, resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights that resulted from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions.

1983's 'Amore Tossico' is a legendary cult film, directed by Claudio Caligari. Arranger and pianist Detto Mariano wrote the entire score on his Fairlight series IIx, a now revered synthesizer that had just entered the market that year. The sound is therefore scary and up to date, a true companion to the vivid and rough imagery of the movie. Featuring sound from the original tapes, the LP is pressed on deluxe 140-gram vinyl and packaged in a gatefold sleeve. You also get a bonus CD of the entire album plus a reproduction of the original film poster.
