Crafted by UK-based Italian composer Alessandro Baldessari, 'Dario Argento Panico' is the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for the documentary retrospective and intimate portrait of Italian giallo master Dario Argento. Premiering at the prestigious 2023 Venice Film Festival, this evocative soundtrack immerses listeners in a diverse array of styles, conveying a rich spectrum of emotions and enhancing the narrative arc of the film. The soundtrack was commissioned by Giada Mazzoleni, film producer and head of Paguro Film. The collaboration between Alessandro Baldessari and director Simone Scafidi started with a conversation, during which Simone articulated his vision for the documentary and invited Alessandro to explore the theme of the doppelganger. Written and recorded between 2022 and 2023, Baldessari's compositions preceded much of the filming process, enabling him to craft a musical narrative that offers a distinctive perspective. The music serves as a parallel reflection on the film's themes - duality, love, grief, family dynamics, anxiety, suicide, and, notably, panic - profoundly enriching the storytelling experience. Baldessari's meticulous approach to composition is evident in the soundtrack's cohesion, achieved through recurring melodic and rhythmic motifs, rather than using a single sound palette. A notable example is the use of Dario Argento's name transformed in a musical motif and subtly integrated into the piano pieces that underscore many pivotal scenes. The soundtrack features a diverse range of tracks, from the pulsating energy of 'Panico Titles' to the tender introspection of 'Suicide and Memories' and the haunting melodies of 'Ominous Doppelganger.' Notably, the film ends on the notes of the entirely string-based composition 'Partenza,' offering a stirring conclusion to the sonic journey. The album includes two bonus tracks and the track 'Tre', from Baldessari's previous work, 'Nostalghia'. Impressively orchestrated and lyrically playful, music was a part of Animaniacs’ core identity from the show’s very beginning. Original songs were built into the show’s DNA and set the series’ signature tone — sometimes educational, oftentimes irreverent, and always, always gut-bustingly hilarious.

Surprisingly, this classic music has never before been collected on vinyl. We at iam8bit are teaming up with our friends at WaterTower Music to correct that.

Introducing…Steven Spielberg Presents Animaniacs (Soundtrack from the Original Series) Vinyl Soundtrack! Meme-spawning classics like “Yakko’s World” and silly send-ups like “I Am the Very Model of A Cartoon Individual” are all represented here, performed by The Animaniacs themselves and presented in their full glory on classic black vinyl.

But what would Animaniacs be without golden-age-inspired cel-tacular cartoon art? We tapped an absolutely prolific cabal of iconic Animaniacs alumni, new and old: Original character artist Dan Haskett, who has touched classics like Scooby-Doo!, and Looney Tunes, storyboard artist Tony Craig, whose expansive credits include Ben 10 and House of Mouse, and Roman Laney, who helped build El Tigre, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and so much more. These are giants of American animation, and we are humbled to help bring their creations to you. To ensure absolute historic perfection, the whole project was also creatively directed by cartoony expert Gabe Swarr, executive producer of the Animaniacs show revival.

The original “To Heart” game was released in 1997, followed two years later by the PlaySyation version in 1999, and then by various media mixes, including anime and comic book adaptations, which have made “To Heart” an explosively popular work. Scored by the legendary Italian film composer Armando Sciascia, Sea Fantasy is a conceptual suite of twelve exotic themes evoking the many moods and dramas of life under the sea. Recorded in 1972 for Sciascia's own Vedette label, the album is a key recording within the micro-genre of Italian underwater library music. A mosaic of evocative modern classical, flamenco textures and a surge of raw analogue synthesizers. Mysterious aquatic music that sits comfortably alongside other Italian Soundtrack and Library recordings including the lush bossa of Daniele Patucchi's Men Of The Sea (CAM) as well as the experimental electronics of Biologia Marina by Amedeo Tommasi & Alessandro Alessandroni (Rhombus). With several cues used for the English-version soundtrack to Harald Reinl's 1976 (Erich von Däniken inspired) mondo-documentary Mysteries Of The Gods, Sea Fantasy is reminiscent of the exotic mood-music scored for Folco Quilici's documentary Oceano composed by Ennio Morricone as well as Luigi Scattina's legendary tropical sexploitation film Il Corpo composed by Piero Umiliani. This new 2019 edition has been newly remastered and expanded with additional liner notes and photos.

This science-fiction film approached its outer space subject matter with a gritty realism, and would set the tone for what was to be their first live-action television series: UFO. This new series took as a starting point the pioneering work of Dr Christiaan N. Barnard, the surgeon who performed the world’s first heart transplant operation. In UFO a dying race of aliens travel across vast distances of space to harvest organs from human beings to help ensure their own survival. To combat this threat the United Nations created SHADO, a top-secret organisation utilising the latest technology available to defend the Earth. To complement the series, the Andersons frequent musical collaborator Barry Gray created a multifaceted score that gave the programme its own musical identity. Elegantly crafted and a firm favourite with Barry Gray fans, the sound of UFO, particularly its ethereal “World Music” closing credits is, quite simply, a joy. Includes a bonus track, Trampoline performed by The Spencer Davis Group from the episode Ordeal.

Assignment K (with lots of pencil scribbles everywhere). The Strange Affair (with lots of pen scribbles everywhere).

As usual with Basil tapes / things there is little else to go on, no tracklist, no list of musicians, no singer names, no dates or anything. I have actually tried to establish the name of the singer on the song from Side One (we have called it “Love Is To Walk Away “ as it is unnamed) but having played it to a handful of knowledgeable collectors and enthusiasts who I would count as experts in this field, no one has a clue who it might be. If you think you know please get in touch. We know who it isn’t.

We can tell you that Assignment K dates from 1968, was a film about a toy maker who has a double life as an international spy. It was directed by Val Guest, who’d just finished trying to rescue the cinematic hotchpotch that was Casino Royale - he had been brought in by the Bond producers after Peter Sellers had walked off the movie. We imagine Assignment K may have been a slightly less stressful few months of shooting. As for the Kirchin score that we have here, we can tell you very little indeed, apart from the fact that the bass player was Ron Prentice (an ex blacksmith turned musician and craftsman) who worked on several Bond scores, but we know little else. And we only know this because it says so in the academic tome “Jazz On The Screen” by David Meeker.

The Strange Affair is also from 1968, and was not only controversial but also a reasonably unsuccessful movie. Directed by David Greene who also directed, amongst other films, I Start Counting and the quite brilliant Sebastian. In this rather grubby flick a policeman called Peter Strange (played by Michael York) falls for an underage girl (played by Susan George), finds himself compromised by a pair of pornographers and gets lured into an errand for a smack gang. We can tell you little else because I have no more information about it all.

But we do know that this music has all the classic Kirchin mid-period sonic hallmarks that have always set him apart.

While reading the “Midnight Skin” script for the first time, Carla Pallone (Vacarme, Mansfield.TYA) in Nantes met Fanny in Athens. And the Eucalyptus trees. And it was at this same moment that she saw through her window, an Eucalyptus tree. Fact and fiction are already mixing, and Carla Pallone welcomes this sign with a smile. Then comes the meeting with filmmaker Manolis Mavris, and his work: first “Brutalia”, then “Midnight Skin”. The writing is chiseled and precise. Each frame is a painting. At the center of the film: Fanny's solitude which excludes her from humankind. This solitude requires a place for expression. Carla Pallone thus imagines an “organic” music, linked to the way that wood, strings and other materials live and resonate. A poetic and strange sound universe, close to Fanny, to her physical and psychological states. She has found the perfect junction between acoustic and electronic, highlighting a modern violin, out of the times. The result is a soundtrack similar to Fanny, inhabited, dark and moving. Human.

Somewhere between Mickaël Nyman and Mica Levi, Carla Pallone knows how to write atmospheres, create landscapes and draw lines of fiction. Her classical training and her taste for ancient music have nourished her path as a composer, to open the spectrum of her music to the widest possible audience. With a strong appreciation for the strings, she explores a sensitive sound universe, which unfolds between organic and analog materials. Acute sense of melody, neoclassicism, minimalism... repetitive pieces of music rub shoulders with ritornellos with great joy. And if the violin is king, synthesizers also find their proper place as disturbing basses or melodic sweeps. There is great sensivity in her sound research, at the crossroads of musical paths, from the most classical to the most experimental, improvised or meditative.

"Gold Snake", the main score, is interpreted by the fabulous voice of Iva Zanicchi, written for a symphony orchestra, and accompanied by the New Orlandi choir (the piece was recorded on 45 RIFI RFN NP 16141). The leitmotif is reprised in a shake version and a slow danceable version. The well-known actress Yoko Tani, the film’s protagonist, performs the romantic piece "Crazy", which is also recorded in an instrumental version. The spy aspect of the plot is emphasized by suspense and action music. For this LP the mono master tapes of the recording session were used.

A release show is scheduled in De Minard (Ghent, Belgium) on November 13.

Electroacoustic composer claire rousay (US) has announced her upcoming album, ‘The Bloody Lady’, featuring the reimagined score she wrote for Viktor Kubal's 1980 eponymous animated film. Kubal (1923-1997), a pioneering Slovak animator, is considered one of the most influential animation filmmakers of the 20th century.

Known as a singular artist who challenges conventions in experimental and ambient music forms, rousay crafted the score in her home studio immediately after moving to LA over the course of 2023.

The inaugural performance, a screening of the film accompanied by rousay performing the score live, took place at Videodroom / Film Fest Gent 2023 in Ghent, Belgium. The project has since been developed into an 11-track album with alternating themes that evoke the film’s atmosphere while standing on its own as a distinct sonic work.

‘The Bloody Lady’ is set to be released on November 8 via VIERNULVIER Records, the label known for its audiovisual collaborations with artists like Miaux, Hieroglyphic Being, and Mattias De Craene.

The record comes with an extensive booklet including liner notes.

Clark says “I was going to just include the cues from the film, but got far too into recording new stuff that fitted the tone and emotion of the film. Favourite tracks: Tangent Cloak, Bleeding Building and Sensual Dismay. Little peaches that popped out in one breezy take. It’s got a really specific, colour/tone this record. It’s drenched in muted joy/dark euphoria. It sounds like Sensual Dismay but can’t really call it that, it’s the soundtrack for a film called In Camera.

Full of pointed notes about an industry rife with prejudice and hypocrisy, In Camera deploys elements of surrealism and fantasy to trace how its young British-Asian protagonist’s sense of self is affected by the tokenism of a world he hopes to conquer. Candid and acidly funny, with an unsettling eye for the warped and bizarre, it’s a playful, stylish satire not just of showbiz but also the myriad absurdities of modern life, with a complex, supple central performance from rising star Nabhaan Rizwan.
