There was so much happening visually in the Wachowski Brothers' instant sci-fi classic The Matrix that it was easy to overlook Don Davis' score. It is true that Davis' music is the most conventional element of the film, often following familiar action film patterns, but that's not to say that it's predictable. There are long quiet stretches that are quite eerie, even without the film to support the music, and he employs dissonance and quick, powerful staccatos quite effectively. And when he turns to grand, sweeping themes, such as on the closing "Anything Is Possible," it's hard not get caught up in the momentum of the piece. It still works better with the film, but The Matrix is the rare score that is nearly as effective as a stand-alone work as it is in the film. - allmusic.com

Maestro Egisto Macchi (Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza - The Group) recorded this mystical ethnographic trip to the South of Italy imbued with its rites, superstitions, magical symbols and popular mythologies in 1977 for the TV Documentary 'Sud e Magia'. Astoundingly evoking the intensity, magic and psychedelia of its subject with the use of inventive and unconventional techniques (aerophones, crystal glasses, prepared piano), Macchi harmonizes kindred spirits from transcendental, religious and metaphysical sound forms. n alternative soundtrack for Roy Andersson’s movie A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence

Emilie Zoé was invited in 2018 by the alternative film festival « 2300 plan 9 à Les Étranges Nuits du Cinéma » in La Chaux-de-Fonds, CH to create a live soundtrack for a movie of her choice. She asked Christian Garcia-Gaucher, who had recently produced her second album The Very Start, to join the project. They chose together Roy Andersson’s A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence for its hypnotic rhythm and its overall contemplative atmosphere and worn out colors. Within a few days, they wrote a collection of delicate themes and slightly melancholic interludes that they could play along the original feature. The show sold out and it felt crucial to everyone that such an exciting project would not end there. They gathered few months later in Swiss producer Louis Jucker’s tiny attic studio to lay these sounds on rusty second hand tapes. These 11 demo tapes merged spontaneously into a rich collaborative album, that assembles lo-fi pop hits and intriguing field recordings into a surprisingly coherent whole.

Ennio Morricone wrote a monothematic score including several orchestral variations of the main theme, a brilliant and very romantic motif with Lounge flavour, vocalised by I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni. Introduced first in “Titoli di Testa” and reprised with several variations throughout the score: a Classic style version with harpsichord, organ and mandolin, a slow and dreamy one with the voice of Edda and also including the choir I Cantori, a samba version, a beat-flavoured mysterious version, another version once again with the splendid magical voice of Edda and a slower variation with the whistle of Alessandro Alessandroni. The style of Ennio Morricone strongly recognizable in a second theme, very romantic and lounge, featuring a keyboard used by the author, frequently also in other scores like “Giu la testa”. A classic-style minuet with the opera vocalism of Edda enriches the score. The third theme is a brilliant orchestral samba introduced by the type machine and developed by the whole orchestra and then reprised with the performance of the wonderful Cantori Moderni. Our LP also contains three superb “shake” dancefloor music themes that bring us the unforgettable Beat atmospheres of those days’ discoteques.

For a long time associated with 'genre cinema', the man had an innate passion for primitive electronics. A long suite divided into 14 movements that best describe the climate of tension and the upcoming deadlines of the featured film, a Gothic thriller in the orbit of meta-horror. The music - sometimes a bit of a timbral but often deliberately descriptive and overwhelming - pin of synths and analogue machines, capable of defining the desperate plot of the film. Franco Micalizzi composed and conducted one of his most iconic OSTs for the crime drama genre with this soundtrack. Within the soundtrack emerges a recurring main theme, using a Moog synthesizer, that is then developed by an energetic woodwind section. It is then reprised in slow and fast versions. There is plenty of instrumental dance music and a romantic ballad with vocals. The leitmotif is alternated with suspenseful phrases written for strings.

Franco Micalizzi wrote one of his best OSTs for the Poliziesco genre with this one (the main theme is one of Micalizzi’s favorites and he often performs it live in concert with his orchestra BIG Bubbling Band). The OST opens with the strong main score written for woodwinds and percussion, which is then reprised with different arrangements throughout the film. It is also alternated with moments of suspense. The violent urban jungle atmosphere is broken by "Sambamba", a sunny pop piece with a Latin sound written for choir and orchestra. For this LP, the master tapes of the recording session were used.

"Mediterraneo" is a film directed by Gabriele Salvatores, set during the Second World War on the Greek island of Castelrosso, a few kilometers from the Turkish coasts. In this place, only apparently uninhabited, some Italian soldiers arrive on a mission; they will soon find themselves to be completely isolated, forced to wait for any communication signs from the outside world and to integrate with the local population.

When it came out in theaters in 1991, “Mediterraneo” immediately gained wide acclaim and recognition (David di Donatello and Nastro d'Argento for best film, Academy Award for best foreign film), a success also significantly determined by the soundtrack written by Giancarlo Bigazzi and Marco Falagiani, record producers and composers of a large series of Italian music famous songs and themes: the essence of this movie score is fully enclosed in the five notes of the main theme, both simple and evocative, immersed in a context of ethnic feel and Arabic/Oriental flavours. Except for some occasional modern sounds, the music of “Mediterraneo” is almost entirely produced by ‘popular’ and unconventional acoustic instruments: santouri, bouzouki, gavala, bagpipe, zurna, toubeleki, davul, rabeca and lyre.

The deep work of music research, composition and arrangement by the Bigazzi/Falagiani duo earned them the 1991 Globo d’oro Award. A soundtrack that is still memorable today, reissued exclusively by AMS Records on clear blue vinyl!

Two years after the stunning AFRICA OSCURA, Four Flies Records is back with another gem from Giuliano Sorgini’s secret archives, this time one which unearths some of his darkest, eeriest music – that is, pieces he composed in the mid-70s for some of the most infamous, low-budget horror movies ever made in Italy.
This collection brings together a selection of original recordings from those movies, which were directed by “Italian Kings of the B’s” Angelo Pannacciò, Salvatore Bugnatelli, Luigi Batzella, and Guido Zurli, with whom the Roman composer worked intensively throughout the 70s. Due to the very low-budget nature of the films, Sorgini recorded the soundtracks entirely on his own, in his Cat & Fox Studio in Rome. He played drums and percussions and added overlapping layers of analogue synths to create a superbly sinister soundscape, thus turning a constraint into an opportunity.
The result is a journey into the mysterious atmospheres of the Italian occult-sounding music of the time, something very close to the dark electronic masterpieces that made Sorgini famous, such as ZOO FOLLE or THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE.
OCCULTO features ten previously unreleased tracks characterized by enigmatic moods, obscure beats and esoteric themes. All tracks are taken from original master tapes that remained buried in the composer’s archives for decades.
The LP comes in a deluxe jacket and inner sleeve designed by Luca Barcellona.
Also available in digital format with three previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Almost 40 years after its theatrical debut, Cabum and Beat Records release for the first time ever the complete score for the movie ALIEN 2 SULLA TERRA (1980, Ciro Ippolito), one of the most obscure films in the Italian horror/sci-fi realm, an apocryphal sequel to the iconic ALIEN by Ridley Scott, released just a few months prior.
One of the most sought-after soundtracks by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis fans, it is a prominent sample of the experimental style of the two composers that would feature prominently throughout the ‘80s. Their kaleidoscopic score begins with a country flavor and evolves with an astonishing electronic timber, sometimes morbid and obsessive. This release features nearly 80 minutes of music, complete with two cues from UNO SCERIFFO EXTRATERRESTRE, POCO EXTRA MOLTO TERRESTRE that are used in the first part of the movie to build tension in a particular scene. L’ultimo squalo (The Great White) is a 1981 movie directed by Enzo G. Castellari, an Italian reply to the horror genre dedicated to shark movies, a trend that started a few years before with Spielberg’s Jaws. In our movie, we have an enormous white shark disrupting the summer of a coastal city in Georgia, in a crescendo of tension and horror that will end in a terrible 1-on-1 between the monster and Peter Benton (James Franciscus), protagonist of the movie and unwitting shark hunter. The music was composed by the De Angelis bros., Guido & Maurizio, obsessive and thrilling in the moments in which the shark appears, dramatic and melodic when the story becomes more emotional. The wonderful score is also connoted by music by the two composers sung by the vocalist Ywonne Wilkins, plus a cue taken from the OST “Uno sceriffo extraterrestre poco extra molto terrestre” that provides great variety to the listening experience.Aside from being released here for the first time in any format, the score of L’ultimo Squalo marks the beginning of a tighter collaboration between Beat Records and Cabum. Denis Villenueve’s masterful Blade Runner 2049 races into theaters this weekend and the film’s accompanying soundtrack, composed by legendary film score maestro Hans Zimmer, is now streaming in full.

The score was composed in tandem by Zimmer and his longtime collaborator Benjamin Wallfisch. The duo was brought in somewhat later in the production process, after the score’s initial composer, Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, ceased involvement due to creative differences.

Villeneuve explained his decision to replace Jóhannsson with Zimmer in an interview with Al Arabiya. “The thing I will say is that making movies is a laboratory,” he explained. “The movie needed something different, and I needed to go back to something closer to [the original film’s composer] Vangelis. Jóhann and I decided that I will need to go in another direction — that’s what I will say.”

The decision seemingly paid off, as Clint Worthington notes in his review of the film: “[Zimmer and Wallfisch] lean heavily on Vangelis’ original 1982 score for inspiration, but 2049 is refreshingly light on incidental music, mostly allowing the booming, immersive sound design to take center stage.”

As Editor-in-Chief Michael Roffman writes in his glowing A- review, the score is “a total evolution of what Vangelis set in motion way, way back in 1982. It’s louder, it’s gloomier, it’s heavier, and it’s much more expansive, all qualities one might tag with Villeneuve’s breathtaking sequel.”

In additional to Zimmer and Wallfisch’s original compositions, the soundtrack features songs by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Lauren Daigle.

“Gladiator” is the original soundtrack of the 2000 film of the same name. The original score and songs were composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard and were released in 2000, titled “Gladiator: Music From the Motion Picture”. The Lyndhurst Orchestra performing the score was conducted by Gavin Greenaway.

The album won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and was also nominated for the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Score ("Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music").

“Gladiator” is a 2000 epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson. It stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Ralf Möller, Oliver Reed (in his final role), Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, John Shrapnel, and Richard Harris. Crowe portrays Hispano-Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor.

The film was released in the United States May , 2000, and grossed $457 million worldwide. The film won multiple awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Crowe and three other Oscars at the 73rd Academy Awards. It has also been credited with rekindling interest in entertainment centered around ancient Greek and Roman culture, such as Rome.

Unbreakable, about a security guard named David Dunn (Bruce Willis) who becomes the sole survivor of a train wreck, posed the question of what would happen if superheroes were real. At the insistence of a mysterious, rare-comic-book collector named Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jack-son), who suffers from a medical condition that makes his bones shatter on the slightest impact, Dunn comes to believe that he has super strength and is impervious to injury or illness. Not only that, he has the ability to see or sense the evil deeds of others simply by touching them.

The Unbreakable score, by James Newton Howard, was the second collaboration between Shyamalan and Howard, following their work together on The Sixth Sense. The Unbreakable score experience was unlike any the composer had had before. “Night sat there and story-boarded the whole movie for me,” Howard said. “I’ve never had a director do that for me. He wanted something that was very different, very distinctive, that immediately evoked the movie when people heard it.”

Howard and Shyamalan chose to simplify the score, and minimized the number of instruments (strings, trumpets, and piano), with limited orchestrations. Some compositions were recorded in a converted church in London. “You could have recorded the same music in a studio in Los Angeles, and it would have been great, but there is something about the sound of that church studio,” Howard said. “It's definitely more misterioso.”

James Newton Howard is an American composer, conductor, and producer. He has scored more than 100 films and is the recipient of a Grammy Award, Emmy Award, and eight Academy Award nominations. His scores include The Fugitive, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Hunger Games film series.

Each theme has been newly recorded with the same collaborators that Carpenter worked with on his hit Lost Themes studio albums: his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies.

Anthology is a near-comprehensive survey of John Carpenter's greatest themes, from his very first movie, the no-budget sci-fi film Dark Star, to 1998's supernatural Western, Vampires.

Those sit alongside the driving, Led Zeppelin-influenced Assault on Precinct 13 theme, Halloween's iconic 5/4 piano riff, and the eerie synth work of The Fog.

Carpenter and his band also cover Ennio Morricone's bleak, minimalist theme for The Thing.
