Matthew Herbert continues his prolific run of soundtrack work with an original score for the acclaimed contemporary British horror film Starve Acre.

Starve Acre, directed by Daniel Kokotajlo and starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, tells the story of a couple confronting the loss of their child in a remote rural setting. Drawing heavily on folklore and mythology, its foreboding examination of grief, faith and the supernatural demanded a score folding pastoral themes and otherworldly textures into an oppressive yet delicate whole.

Starve Acre OST comes after a noted run of soundtracks by Herbert, which includes acclaimed independent films such as The Wonder, The Cave and the Oscar nominated A Fantastic Woman. It's a minimalist exercise in tension and fragility which matches patient threads of instrumentation with atmospheric sound design — romantic swells of orchestration pitted against looming low-end pressure and disembodied, unnatural voices helping render the malevolent forces implied throughout the film.

The soundtrack also features two versions of 'Let Me In' — one sung by Matt Smith, and the other performed by folk and electronics duo Crewdson & Cevanne (Hugh Jones and Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian). The song is an interpretation of 'It Hails, It Rains, It Snows, It Blows', an English folk song dated to the early 20th Century. From the pared-back acoustic lilt of Smith's version to the subtly building ornamentation of Crewdson & Cevanne's interpretation, it's a bewitching finale to the pervasive gloom of the wider score.

They must quickly find 11 other players, as the inter-school championship begins in 24 hours. Numerous artists and composers were involved in creating the theme music and accompanying songs, including Kosuke Morimoto, who contributed to various theme songs for Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece. Any fan of the series will have a strong feeling of nostalgia when they recall the music that marked them during their teenage years. The very Pop-rock and J-pop tones will remind them of those after-school afternoons watching episodes of this epic anime on Game One. Without Umiliani’s contribution, Italian jazz, film music and library music would lack some of the key identifying features we associate them with today, thanks to his ability to carve out a distinctive sound identity from his personal craft, the studio he built and the trust he gained from his collaborators. This identity for many simply encapsulates the cipher of an unrepeated age of Italian popular music.
At the Sound Work Shop studio (opened in 1968) Umiliani conceived the majority of his projects and hosted the recording sessions for numerous movie soundtracks, pop hits and library music albums by the most remarkable musicians in Rome — including himself. In this exciting environment, he had the opportunity to experiment with many different styles, from funk to psychedelic rock, from disco to avant-garde, from easy-listening to electronic music, following the ever-changing needs of the soundtrack and library music industries. He therefore mastered an extreme variety of genres, moods and atmospheres, often mixing up their peculiar features to achieve unusual combinations in albums conceived both for production purposes and for home listening.
Umiliani’s ability to reinvent the concept of musicianship in the fast-moving society of his time made him a modern musician in the most complete sense of the term, by putting himself in charge of every facet of his work, from the conception to the production, the recording, the publishing and even the packaging of his own music.
In less than two decades, Umiliani released almost 80 records on the three labels he established between the mid-1960s and the early 1970s: Omicron, Liuto, and Sound Work Shop, besides all the music he was simultaneously composing for movie productions, licensed and published by Italian major companies.
This box set allows us to fully appreciate this little-known side of Piero Umiliani in an unprecedented way: his ability to seamlessly intertwine his musical creativity with his vision as a producer and publisher emerges clearly from this series as a unique feature of this composer. 15 tracks have been specially mastered for vinyl and will be pressed onto heavyweight discs, to be housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve. Sleeve art is by Niklas “El Huervo” Åkerblad, the visionary artist for Ultros, and renowned artistic and musical contributor to the iconic Hotline Miami series.

Oscar Rydelius — AKA Ratvader — created a mellifluous, melodic soundtrack that sounds both organically human and alien at the same time. Hypnotic musical build-ups are patiently drawn out. He took the lead from Åkerblad/El Huervo’s mesmerising art, while ensuring Ultros’ music “leaves room for the eyes.”

The score is peppered with field recordings of nature sounds from the Amazon rainforest and Peruvian instruments like whistling jars and bone flutes, giving some tracks a 1960s and ’70s New Age feeling. Classical instruments like the Cello and Flute, as well as haunting vocals, sail atop dense harmonic tapestries. For parts of the recording during the Covid pandemic, Rydelius and Åkerblad rented cabins on the Swedish island of Gotland (a notable Ingmar Bergman and Tarkovsky filming location) in order to soak up the natural vibes of that environment.

Central to the soul of the soundtrack is Cello player Björn Risberg, whose lyrical playing features prominently. Joining him were multi-flute instrumentalist Adrian Åsling Sellius, violinist Agnes Högberg and vocalist Anna-Maria Lundberg, in addition to El Huervo on multiple tracks.

The vinyl track selection focuses on the world and Sarcophagus of Ultros. Ratvader personally curated the tracklist so that listeners would spin the vinyl, lay flat on the floor, and enter the world of the game, aiming for “a pleasant and present experience.”

A rare masterpiece that is secretly attracting attention from the perspective of music after the recent revival of City Pop~Balearic~New Age. This is the first analog version of the 1991 soundtrack related to Hisashi Eguchi, one of Japan's most renowned manga artists! "Still Life” is a TV program that vividly blends Eguchi's stylish and captivating illustrations with music sound-produced by musician/saxophonist Kiyoshi Miyaura. The program known to those in the know that aired for about five minutes before 11 p.m. on Saturday nights from the late 80s to the early 00s. This is the second of three soundtracks illustrated by Hisashi Eguchi and Sho Kitagawa, and is the most difficult one to find.

The Visitor sees the legendary filmmaker and photographer continue his decades-long creative journey with a transgressive reimagining of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 classic Teorema, set against the dystopian backdrop of a paranoid, xenophobic post-Brexit London. Washed ashore from the sea in a suitcase, a mysterious refugee disrupts the lives of a privileged white family, leading them through a series of explicit and transformative encounters. The film, which features performance artist Bishop Black amid a series of explicit, hardcore sex scenes, premiered at the 2024 Berlinale Film Festival.

With reverence and reference to Ennio Morricone’s iconic score for Teorema, Hannah Holland has crafted a soundtrack that both honors the original and brings a contemporary twist. The album features collaborations with a stellar lineup of artists from both the queer and electronic music underground, including Ghost Culture, Jonjo Jury, Josh Caffé, Joy Joseph, ROY INC, and Ziah Ziah.
