50 years ago, Franco and Luciana De Gemini had recently moved to Rome, both looking for their place in the world. He a talented musician, she a beautiful young bride, they lived in a small penthouse with a huge terrace full of flowers and views that spanned Rome, from the dome of St. Peter to the Altar of the Fatherland to the Castelli Romani: over 40 kilometers of the Eternal City. Through his collaborations with many great maestros of the period and his involvement with the orchestras, Franco got to know many people including Fulvio Corradini and Benito Costa (the former an administrator of prestigious record catalogs, the second a trusted friend). In fact, they had already caught wind of a small record label called Beat Records Company, founded on May 12, 1966, but the two had no time to devote to the endeavor so they trusted its administration to Franco De Gemini by actively involving him as a partner. It was on March 23, 1968, that they set foot in that office on Viale Medaglie D'oro. Beat had published 58 tracks, had 16,500 Liras in cash and a tax fine of 140,000 liras for failure to report. That was the day that Franco and Luciana began their adventure, which would last for him until July 20, 2013, and for her until March 3, 2016. It was an Intense fifty years, always with one foot on an airplane, in a smoke-filled recording studio, in front of a Moviola viewing the scrolling images of film or around a table with incredible characters, to talk, create music and art, or simply to enjoy life. That little two-year-old son that was once picked up and held by Franco and Luciana is now a man of 50, a man with whom generations of film and music fans have been able to cultivate their passions, served and revered by the tireless work of this incredible couple. Having reached this important landmark in time, with over half a century of history behind us, we decided to revive five significant favorites from our musical catalog and replicate them in their original format, a tribute to our past and yours. The fifth appointment of this revival is with one of our scores unreleased on vinyl, Alla Ricerca DEL Piacere by Teo Usuelli, a score we love deeply for a movie featuring the divine Barbara Bouchet, a beautiful icon beloved on both sides of the ocean. The music--iconic as well, and among the most appreciated in our catalog--has been included on Beat at Cinecittà albums and used by the Cohen bros., who included Piacere Sequence M36 in The Big Lebowsky. Suite Crude Revue is a rotating cast of outstanding performers committed to an unshackled aesthetic. Produced, composed, and arranged by Daniel Zelonky, this single presents songs for imagined films. “Cowpoke Detox” might be termed “spaghetti jazz”. It’s a strange hybrid of spaghetti western style baritone guitar lines supporting jazz noir harmonies, creating a surreal backdrop for the tale of an unrepentant murderer, who feels regret only in terms of the consequences he’s facing. “Blue Ramen #1” is a lover’s lament, set to what might be termed a “Hollywood samba”: One imagines Los Angeles session players emulating samba for a commercial film, not an authentic Brazilian band. Waxwork Records is beyond thrilled to announce the debut vinyl release of Evil Dead Rise Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Stephen McKeon. Written and directed by Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”), the movie stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland.

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, Evil Dead Rise tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sullivan and Sutherland, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Evil Dead Rise is produced by longtime franchise producer Rob Tapert (Ash vs Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi and cult legend and “Ash” himself, Bruce Campbell.

About THE Composer

Stephen McKeon has been composing music for film and television for more than 30 years. A highly versatile multi-instrumentalist, he has scored over 100 feature films and numerous award-winning international television drama series and documentaries, including Black Mirror (“Fifteen Million Merits”).

McKeon, an admitted ‘huge horror fan,’ discussed his approach to the film’s soundtrack. “Lee liked the idea of something offscreen laughing and delighting at the suffering and terror of the characters, so I recorded two female vocalists performing 'taunting' sounds and vocal effects.

(Lee) wanted a score that was visceral, immersive and confrontational, while still leaving room for an emotional theme. So, I began to create sounds and textures based on guitar feedback; guitar strings stretching and breaking; strings being ripped with knives and scissors; and many other weird effects. Many of these made it into the score as part of the texture and tapestry. But ultimately, for the signature, we hit upon an idea we called 'the meat grinder.' I spent a week creating lots of sounds using a variety of methods, but eventually, the one that worked was the result of me dragging carving knives along the strings of my beautiful grand piano and then chopping and stretching the audio into something that eventually sounded like a demonic meat grinder being revved up.”

McKeon also recorded various stringed and percussion instruments, “being tortured, broken and slowly dismembered. Then, these recordings were chopped up, bent and stretched before being fed, screaming for mercy, into the score.”

The sad and romantic side of the story is given intense passages with strings that reveal once again the great melodic side of the composer. For this LP, we were able to use the stereo master tapes of the recording session.

About the Composer

Samuel Laflamme is a composer who has strengthened projects across the film, television and video game worlds. Samuel Laflamme began his composing career scoring numerous television shows, documentaries, and ad spots across a multitude of genres. He has collaborated with many of the top video game companies in the industry, including Ubisoft, Activision, and Red Barrels where he worked on the critically acclaimed survival horror-game Outlast. Samuel’s other credits include French Canadian dramatic comedy series Le Chalet, along with the 2016 Canadian-American co-production, fantasy film Wait Till Helen Comes, based on Mary Downing Hahn’s best-selling novel from the 1980’s.

About the Director

Protégé of filmmaker/novelist Clive Barker, Anthony DiBlasi partnered in Barker’s production company Seraphim Films for nearly ten years, serving as a key executive & producer on films such as MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN starring Bradley Cooper and BOOK OF BLOOD. DiBlasi adapted and directed DREAD from the Barker short story, starring Laura Donnelly (HBO’s The Nevers) which won "Best Independent Feature" at the Spike Scream Awards. DiBlasi has adapted several Barker novels for the screen including THE DAMNATION GAME (Warner Bros) and THE THIEF OF ALWAYS (Fox).

DiBlasi directed, co-wrote and edited “Last Shift” a critically acclaimed supernatural horror film released by Magnolia Pictures in 2015. Last Shift was named among the top 5 horror films of 2015 and won both a Golden Skull award and an iHorror award. DiBlasi has directed 8 features including the critically acclaimed thriller MISSIONARY and MOST LIKELY TO DIE for Netflix. DiBlasi recently wrapped production on MALUM, an expanded reimagining of “Last Shift,” and is currently in development on the thriller THE STEP COUNTER with his writing partner and wife Natalie Victoria and Malcolm Spellman’s The 51 (The Winter Soldier).

ove After Love (Chinese: 第一炉香) is a 2020 Chinese erotic romance drama film directed by Ann Hui, and starring Ma Sichun, Faye Yu, Eddie Peng, Chang Chun-ning and Fan Wei. The film had its world premiere at the 77th Venice International Film Festival on September 8, 2020. It is scheduled to be theatrically released in China on October 22, 2021.

The film marked the third time Hui directed an Eileen Chang adaptation (following 1984’s Love In A Fallen City and 1997’s Eighteen Springs). It is an adaption of Chang’s novella Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier, a sprawling love story set in 1940s Hong Kong.

The film’s soundtrack was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Despite never achieving major mainstream success in his career, the scope of influence from cult comedian Rudy Ray Moore is palpable and far-reaching. A consummate performer and raconteur, Moore's comedy emphasized raw and explicit story-telling and wisecracking, often told in rhyme, and featuring a backing band; a style of performance that inadvertedly set a blueprint for early hip-hop music. Following in the footsteps of comic legends Redd Foxx and Moms Mabley, his stage presence would inspire the likes of Katt Williams and Snoop Dogg, find widespread underground success among inner cities in the 1970s, and would lead him to collaborate with a wide swath of artists into his later years, from Big Daddy Kane to Insane Clown Posse. His various bits and sketches would even become sampling fodder in tracks by Madlib, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, 2 Live Crew, and innumerable others.

Above all else, Rudy Ray Moore's best known and most beloved claim to fame is his tales of the legend of Dolemite the pimp. Derived from various obscene stories he overheard while working in a record store, Moore's most famous routine saw him take on the role of Dolemite, and recount humorous stories and anecdotes which framed the hustler as something of a ghetto folk hero. These anecdotes proved to be incredibly popular in urban clubs and parties, and would later be adapted into the hit 1975 blaxploitation film Dolemite, of which Moore would produce and star.

In celebration of Rudy Ray Moore's extensive works, as well as the upcoming Eddie Murphy-starring Netflix biopic featuring him, Dolemite Records proudly presents this reissue of one of his 1975 release, The Return Of Dolemite. Coming just on the cusp of the feature film's release, Return sees Moore at the top of his game, spinning anecdotal yarns about sexual conquests, hustling stories, and in his own parlance: "F*ckin' up motherf*ckas!"

Quartet Records and Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection proudly present the world premiere vinyl release of both the used and unused scores for Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the film.

Frenzy marked the director’s triumphant return to London in 1972. With an excellent script by Anthony Shaffer, the film was immediately considered one of Hitchcok’s best and has since become a classic.

After the parting of ways with Bernard Herrmann, Hitchcock changed composers in each of his last four films, choosing from those who were popular at the time. For Frenzy, his first choice was Henry Mancini (breakfast AT Tiffany’s, THE Pink Panther, Hatari!, Charade), who wrote a sumptuous, gothic-hued score featuring an unusual orchestral palette. The main theme uses the dolorous tones and sepulchral pedals of a mighty organ, and the tension-filled score that follows is grim and at times almost brutal. Hitchcock, feeling it was too “dark and cruel,” turned it down and hired celebrated British composer Ron Goodwin (murder, SHE Said, Battle OF Britain, Where Eagles Dare, Squadron 633) to compose a lighter, yet still suspenseful, score. For the main title, a panoramic shot over the Thames, Goodwin wrote a majestic melody ornamented with trumpets and timpani, in the best English tradition of pomp and circumstance.

Frenzy was the only completely rejected score in Henry Mancini’s long career, and also one of the most famous and requested Goodwin scores over the ensuing decades. Neither of them, however, have previously been officially released in any form until today.

This 2-lp collection has been painstakingly produced, restored and mastered by Mike Matessino from stereo and mono elements vaulted at Universal Pictures, with the collaboration of both the Ron Goodwin and Henry Mancini estates.

This special edition features an exclusive, in-depth essay by writer and composer Deniz Cordell packaged in a deluxe tip-on gatefold and pressed in audiophile 180 GM black vinyl.

Roberto Pregadio's brilliant music is not surprisingly, functional and almost disconnected from the bloody images: there is no overwhelming sense of disturbance for the listener. The soundtrack of “La Settima Donna” was published only once, in cd format, attached to the rare dvd of the film, gaining new life on vinyl thanks to Musica Per Immagini. Some of the eleven tracks of the score are characterised by an easy listening mood and united by a psychedelic feel, in harmony with the progressive atmospheres found in albums such as “A Saucerful Of Secrets” (1968) and “Meddle” (1971) by Pink Floyd. However, the English band is not the only reference for the jazz pianist, who quotes a piece by Bryan Ferry, entrusting it to the voice of Ray Lovelock, one of the three kidnappers. After that, the Sicilian composer remodels an international hit by Donna Summer, background of the sequence in which the nun is forced to strip naked in front of her tormentors.

Robby Poitevin (24-10-1926 / 3-10-2003) represents the Italian Film Music school, very close, for its lounge sounds, to that of his American colleagues, such as Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini, Quincy Jones and Hugo Montenegro. Other than being an extremely valid arranger and orchestra leader, Maestro Poitevin composed jazz, blues and swing themes, like those for “The hired killer”, which is part of the police and spy current. For this genre, the composer also created other remarkable soundtracks, like “Assassination”, “L’uomo del colpo perfetto”, “Quella carogna dell’ispettore Sterling”, “A.D.3 Operazione squalo bianco”. In 1966 RCA published an LP for the promo series SP (SP 8017), which had nine selections for a total running time of 19:06 minutes. In 2009 GDM Music printed out this OST, for the very first time on CD (gdm 4018), with three extra tracks, pairing it with “Quella carogna dell’ispettore Sterling”. We are reprinting the nine tracks of the original promo LP and, along with the three bonus tracks of the previous GDM’s CD, we are adding four more unpublished tracks, discovered in the original recording session’s mono masters, which bring the total running time of the LP up to 37:04 minutes. Robby Poitevin composed an elegant music, inspired by jazz, blues and American swing, creating calm and mysterious athmospheres as well as pure action ones. Among hired assassins, bullets and homicides there is also a love theme, arranged in different versions such as Bossa and sung by female voice.

It was also filmed on Universal Studio’s lot, using several props from other horror films of that time. Starring Madge Bellamy, Robert W. Frazer, and John Harron, the film follows the cast as they navigate zombies, love, obsession, and treachery. Initially slammed by critics upon its release, the movie has been reevaluated and praised by recent critics for its classic horror production. The film has gone on to influence mainstream media, even influencing the band name of White Zombie. Rob Zombie has said of the film, “It’s a great film that not a lot of people know about. Taken from the 1993 movie directed by Pupi Avati. Riziero Ortolani (25 March 1926 – 23 January 2014) was an Italian composer, conductor, and orchestrator, predominantly of film scores. He scored over 200 films and television programs between 1955 and 2014, with a career spanning over fifty years. Internationally, he is best known for his genre scores, notably his music for mondo, giallo, horror, and Spaghetti Western films. His most famous composition is "More," which he wrote for the infamous film Mondo Cane. It won the 1964 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Theme and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 36th Academy Awards.[3] The song was later covered by Frank Sinatra, Kai Winding, Andy Williams, Roy Orbison, and others. Ortolani received many other accolades, including four David di Donatello Awards, three Nastro d'Argento Awards, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. In 2013, he received a Lifetime Achievement from the World Soundtrack Academy. In the early 1950s, Ortolani was founder and member of a well-known Italian jazz band. One of his early film scores was for Paolo Cavara and Gualtiero Jacopetti's 1962 pseudo-documentary Mondo Cane, whose main title-song More earned him a Grammy and was also nominated for an Oscar as Best Song. The success of the soundtrack of Mondo Cane led Ortolani to score films in England and the United States such as The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964), The Spy with a Cold Nose (1966), The Biggest Bundle of Them All (1968) and Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968). He also scored the 1972 film The Valachi Papers, directed by Terence Young and starring Charles Bronson. Ortolani scored all or parts of over 200 films, including German westerns like Old Shatterhand (1964) and a long series of Italian giallos, Spaghetti Westerns, Eurospy films, Exploitation films and mondo films. These include Il Sorpasso (1962), Castle of Blood (1964), Africa Addio (1966), Day of Anger (1967), Anzio (1968), The McKenzie Break (1970), The Hunting Party (1971), A Reason to Live, a Reason to Die (1972), Seven Blood-Stained Orchids (1972), The Fifth Musketeer (1979), From Hell to Victory (1979), the controversial Ruggero Deodato films Cannibal Holocaust (1980) and The House on the Edge of the Park (1980), and the first series of La piovra (1984). In later years he scored many films for Italian director Pupi Avati. His music was used on soundtracks for Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 (1999), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), Drive (2011) and Django Unchained (2012).

The previous edition to this, 2009's The Finishing Line: Film Music Vol. 2, had focused on re-creating the psychological mind-state of the wilder end of 1970s British public information films. By way of change Ashcan Copy is presented as an album of soundtrack cues from films that were, for one reason or another, never released. The films, hailing from Italy, Japan and the USA (among others) supposedly date from the 1950s to the 1970s, and were (according to the extensive sleeve notes) exactingly sourced from film archives across Europe.
In reality, all the music is self-composed. The eight tracks include elements of noise, folk, psychedelia, prog and noir-jazz within their elaborate constructions, created with a panoply of instrumentation including Mellotron, zither, home-made percussion, Fender Rhodes, harmonium, MiniMoog and more. Delicate and sensuous, heavy and oppressive – the record negotiates these musical contradictions while retaining a single-minded pursuit of strangeness and surprise.
Having finally found its spiritual home on soundtrack specialist label Cineploit, Ashcan Copy can at last be heard by all.
