Augustus Muller and Jae Matthews’ fifth release entitled ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ is not a traditional album. Rather, it is the soundtrack to a short film, also entitled ‘The Runner’. The film, written, produced, and directed by the duo, is a searching horror film, attached to a meta-style “documentary” about Boy Harsher’s recording process. The album includes several distinct components: cinematic arrangements, vocal features, and of course classic Boy Harsher dark pop. Both the album and short film will be released in January 2022.

The album opens with “Tower”. The only track on ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ that Boy Harsher has previously played live, but never recorded. The song is an incantation, with its pulsing synth and Jae’s begging vocals. A spell about desire and impending destruction. Jae asks 'But are you honest? Do you trust? You trust in me?' Questions answered by her desperate yells. It starts both the film and the soundtrack with a heavy presence.

Two songs on ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ feature vocalists other than Jae Matthews. He allows a distinct sound for both vocalists and really leans into the possibility of divergent genres. “Machina”, is a Hi-nrg homage, performed by Mariana Saldaña of Boan, and “Autonomy” a new wave tribute, performed by Cooper B. Handy of Lucy. Augustus Muller fully embraces the soundtrack ethos, by creating fictional ‘bands’ to generate additional content.

‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ is exactly what’s in the name: a soundtrack. At first the shape of the release was nebulous - yet once realized the album is dynamic. It serves as the story of the running figure and her musical accompaniment. Those expecting a traditional release will be surprised, but not disappointed.

Ted K. Kaczynski is notorious for both tragically murdering three people (and wounding an additional 23) via bombs sent in the mail and for his numerous writings on the evils of technology he composed during his primitive residency in the woods of Montana. Film director Tony Stone's choice to have the renowned electronic artist Blanck Mass score the film is somewhat ironic and creates an obvious tension perfect for the controversial and complex subject matter. 2020 saw the first Blanck Mass movie score, for the soundtrack to Nick Rowland's acclaimed cinematic debut Calm with Horses. This expansion into new areas of melodic composition and textural exploration won Blanck Mass many new fans, with the BBC's acknowledged number one film buff Mark Kermode proclaiming the work the soundtrack of the year. In 2021, Blanck Mass won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Film Score and has firmly established himself at the forefront of the latest wave of experimental soundscape wizards. Recording during lockdown at his studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, Blanck Mass's Ben Power was in the perfect setting for a musical piece intended to capture the isolation central to Kaczynski's story. Power was also working with a director in a time zone 10 hours behind and thus many sessions required working in the middle of the night, which added a fitting intensity to the composition process. He said of the project "I wanted it to feel like an `epic'" and drew on the legends Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone for inspiration in encapsulating the energy of the perceived good vs. evil. The gentle madness of sound achieved is exquisite and slowly builds in intensity and desperation as the score moves along. Power is able to perfectly capture the complexity, the terror and the deep emotionality of the film while presenting an often breathtakingly beautiful and always masterful album that stands on its own as a work of art. Berto Pisano composed and conducted an OST with a lounge beat and evocative orchestral themes using the wonderfully sexy voice of Edda Dell'Orso, which evoke the sensual / erotic relationship between the adult man and the teen desperate for strong emotions. The main themes are reprised with piano only. The atmosphere of apparent relaxation in the hotel in Ischia is created with pop themes written for Hammond organ and rhythm section. There is also a version with bass flute and a faster version in Bossa tempo. The master tape in stereo of a rare promotional soundtrack album was found in the RCA archives. It was released in 1974 under the label Pegaso and contains almost all the recorded music from the film.

Transversales is very glad to announce the release of Mémoire Magnétique Vol. 2 spanning 1966-1993, revelatory collection of short and secret music by electronic music pioneer Bernard Parmegiani. Since the late 50's, Bernard Parmegiani, a major figure of electroacoustic music and a founding member of GRM has created some eighty two concerts music. From the start, Parmegiani’s work was closely linked to the screen, with dozens of documentaries, films, long features, animation films but also musical pieces for dance, stage or television. If many of his pieces are landmarks in the history of electroacoustic music (De Natura Sonorum, La Roue Ferris…), his application music compositions are strongly embedded in the subconscious landscape of the French public (Stade 2, Roissy Paris Airport…). The second volume of this compilation allows us to discover some of unreleased rarities from Bernard Parmegiani’s personal archives and unpublished recordings which were composed for the screen or the performing arts.

Death Waltz Recording Company brings us what is likely to be a future classic in the form of Ben Lovett’s sophisticated electronic score to science fiction thriller "Synchronicity". Starring mumblecore specialist AJ Bowen (YOU’RE NEXT) and cult hero Michael Ironside (SCANNERS), "Synchronicity" is about an inventor that creates a time machine and uses it to go back in time to stop the potential theft of the technology. Lovett’s music recalls all the obvious candidates for these types of scores, John Carpenter, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, but while he stands on the shoulders of giants he still manages to create something that exists on its own terms.

"Synchronicity" is all about immersion; the score wraps you up in it and massages your senses before taking you on a beautiful but dangerous journey. It feels like a dream, with Lovett’s evocative soundscapes modulating and pulsating to augment the pervasive synth melodies. Much of it is ominous, foreboding – it flows between serenity and paranoia, but it always coheres into the kind of experience that is almost impossible to replicate. The future, the past, the present: they’re all here, and "Synchronicity" feels both futuristic and timeless. It is what it is, a beautiful contradiction.

Paddy Kingsland was the first Radiophonic composer to see a solo release of his compositions, although he is not credited on the sleeve. "Fourth Dimension", first released in 1973, showcased Kingsland's theme tunes for television and radio while at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The recordings feature a rock-style backing band and synthesisers including the VCS 3 and "Delaware" Synthi 100, and the track "Reg" from the album was also released as the B side to the 1973 single release of the iconic Doctor Who theme tune. Kingsland remained at the workshop for 21 years, leaving in 1981, during which time he composed music for much loved TV shows The Changes, Doctor Who and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy among others.

Assignment K (with lots of pencil scribbles everywhere). The Strange Affair (with lots of pen scribbles everywhere).

As usual with Basil tapes / things there is little else to go on, no tracklist, no list of musicians, no singer names, no dates or anything. I have actually tried to establish the name of the singer on the song from Side One (we have called it “Love Is To Walk Away “ as it is unnamed) but having played it to a handful of knowledgeable collectors and enthusiasts who I would count as experts in this field, no one has a clue who it might be. If you think you know please get in touch. We know who it isn’t.

We can tell you that Assignment K dates from 1968, was a film about a toy maker who has a double life as an international spy. It was directed by Val Guest, who’d just finished trying to rescue the cinematic hotchpotch that was Casino Royale - he had been brought in by the Bond producers after Peter Sellers had walked off the movie. We imagine Assignment K may have been a slightly less stressful few months of shooting. As for the Kirchin score that we have here, we can tell you very little indeed, apart from the fact that the bass player was Ron Prentice (an ex blacksmith turned musician and craftsman) who worked on several Bond scores, but we know little else. And we only know this because it says so in the academic tome “Jazz On The Screen” by David Meeker.

The Strange Affair is also from 1968, and was not only controversial but also a reasonably unsuccessful movie. Directed by David Greene who also directed, amongst other films, I Start Counting and the quite brilliant Sebastian. In this rather grubby flick a policeman called Peter Strange (played by Michael York) falls for an underage girl (played by Susan George), finds himself compromised by a pair of pornographers and gets lured into an errand for a smack gang. We can tell you little else because I have no more information about it all.

But we do know that this music has all the classic Kirchin mid-period sonic hallmarks that have always set him apart.

First appearing on TV screens in September 1968, Joe 90 was a unique nine year old boy with the ability to absorb the brain patterns of top experts enabling him to become the most special agent of W.I.N. (World Intelligence Network). Whilst there are arguably better-known scores amongst Barry Gray's sublime catalogue of work with the Andersons, the composer's work for Joe 90 is in many ways the most consistent and inventive selection he ever wrote. Developing a theme for the new series was always the musician's starting point, and for Joe 90, the pop charts breezed into Gray's studio, with an opening tune featuring a genuine groove. Mixing Gray's inventive electronics with 60s "surf rock" guitars was an inspired decision. It is no wonder that this piece has gone on to enjoy a second life as a Northern Soul disco floor-filler. For episodic incidentals, Gray was freed from the detached unearthly premise of Captain Scarlet and able to bring back a playful sensibility and a more mature musical palette which are amply illustrated in this 24 track collection.

‘My Animal’ is Augustus Muller’s (Boy Harsher) debut as a feature film composer and follows 'Cellulosed Bodies', his score for two experimental pornography films released last month.

Muller wrote and recorded the score for 'My Animal' at his home studio in Northampton, MA, where he primarily used hardware and analog synthesizers. Muller utilizes a sparse but efficient palette of sounds, combining modern and quintessentially 80’s soundscapes to create a score that’s fresh while still nodding to 80’s B movies. With this release, Muller pays homage to Klaus Shulze’s music for 'Angst' and John Carpenter's 'Assault on Precinct 13'.

Written by Jae Matthews (Boy Harsher), 'My Animal' was directed by Jaqueline Castel, and stars Bobbi Salvör Menuez (Euphoria) and Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies).

'My Animal' is a genre-bending horror romance that tells the story of Heather. Tormented by a hidden family curse, she is forced to live a secluded life on the outskirts of a small town. When she falls for the rebellious Jonny, their connection threatens to unravel Heather's suppressed desires, tempting her to unleash the animal within.

Jacqueline Castel is a longtime music video and short film director at Sacred Bones Records, and has directed work for musicans Alan Vega (Suicide), The Soft Moon, Zola Jesus, and for directors David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, and John Carpenter.

Bloodhunt boasts a sonically rich score sired by acclaimed Polish-Bulgarian composer Atanas Valkov, and featuring the Sofia Session Orchestra & Choir. The city of Prague provided much of the aesthetic inspiration for Bloodhunt’s soundscape: classical and romantic, yet with many a shadowy corner in which a vampire might secrete themselves. Valkov enjoyed creating contrast between modern electronic musical elements and old world ones, as well as layering guitars and using irregular rhythmic structures. It is introduced in the opening credits and sung by Mal dei Primivites on track1, and is then reprised with captivating instrumental arrangements. For the four protagonists, Maestro Trovajoli composed a jazz motif with a spylike atmosphere. Armando Trovajoli performs the scat singing with an airy piece using organ and tempo and performs the main theme on the piano. For this LP we were able to use the mono tapes from the recording session.

About the composer:

Bafta-nominated composer Anthony Willis has taken a running leap into the Neverland of film scoring, quickly becoming one of the most highly sought after new voices in Hollywood. Anthony composed the score to Oscar-winning writer/director Emerald Fennell’s drama thriller Promising Young Woman starring Carey Mulligan, which was nominated for Best Picture and earned Anthony a Bafta nomination for Best Original Score.

Willis grew up in London and began his musical training as a chorister of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, England. He went on to study Composition at Marlborough College, Wilshire and the University of Bristol, before earning his graduate degree from the University of Southern California. He currently resides in Venice Beach.

Soundtrack from the Original Series (1993 1998) on Vintage Black Wax Music by Animaniacs Album Art by Dan Haskett, Tony Craig, and Roman Laney Animaniacs was a golden moment in television history, a bona-fide & fully-featured animated variety show harkening back to the early days of American cartoons featuring short skits, biting satirical wit, and, of course, ludicrously catchy tunes.

Impressively orchestrated and lyrically playful, music was a part of Animaniacs’ core identity from the show’s very beginning. Original songs were built into the show’s DNA and set the series’ signature tone — sometimes educational, oftentimes irreverent, and always, always gut-bustingly hilarious.

Surprisingly, this classic music has never before been collected on vinyl. We at iam8bit are teaming up with our friends at WaterTower Music to correct that.

Introducing…Steven Spielberg Presents Animaniacs (Soundtrack from the Original Series) Vinyl Soundtrack! Meme-spawning classics like “Yakko’s World” and silly send-ups like “I Am the Very Model of A Cartoon Individual” are all represented here, performed by The Animaniacs themselves and presented in their full glory on classic black vinyl.

But what would Animaniacs be without golden-age-inspired cel-tacular cartoon art? We tapped an absolutely prolific cabal of iconic Animaniacs alumni, new and old: Original character artist Dan Haskett, who has touched classics like Scooby-Doo!, and Looney Tunes, storyboard artist Tony Craig, whose expansive credits include Ben 10 and House of Mouse, and Roman Laney, who helped build El Tigre, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and so much more. These are giants of American animation, and we are humbled to help bring their creations to you. To ensure absolute historic perfection, the whole project was also creatively directed by cartoony expert Gabe Swarr, executive producer of the Animaniacs show revival.
