The fact is suffering is unavoidable. The only way out of it all is to move through it. And this isn't just about suffering either. The only way to arrive at pleasure and peace is to move towards it. It's just so easy to stay in place, not moving in fear of being hurt. But it just inevitably suffocates your capacity for joy in doing so. This record is a soundtrack for "moving through it" - whatever that may be. It's hardly just the sounds of struggle and suffering - it is also the sounds of true relief and joy. It is an attempt to reconcile these dualities as a singular experience, rather than viewing them as separate. There is no separation between our joy and our suffering - and my belief in that is what makes moving through life feels more like a dance and less like a fight. Waxwork Records is proud to present the debut vinyl release of THE Sentinel Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Gil Mellé. The Sentinel is a 1977 American supernatural Horror film directed by Michael Winner (Death Wish, Death Wish II). The plot focuses on a young model (Cristina Raines) that moves into a historic Brooklyn brownstone that has been sectioned into apartments, only to find out that the building is owned by the Catholic diocese and is a gateway to Hell. The film features early acting roles by several now-household-name actors such as Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, and John Carradine.

Following a string of supernatural Horror films such as Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen, The Sentinel is based off the 1974 novel of the same name by Jeffrey Konvitz. Unlike other films of its time dealing in topics of the occult, The Sentinel features strong visuals and depictions of creatures from Hell as they appear in the works of Dante's Inferno, Christopher Marlowe, and the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch.

Two 1980s Brazilian boogie bombs from Sandra de Sá and Equipe Rádio Cidade get a remastered reissue as part of Mr Bongo Brazil 45’s series.

Sandra de Sá’s ‘Olhos Coloridos’ is an ‘80s MPB/boogie jam, taken from her self-titled 1982 LP on RGE Brazil, that sits perfectly alongside the likes of Tim Maia, Marcos Valle, Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti. No surprise then that Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge feature on the track, backed by some of the members from Banda Black Rio. A joyous combination of funk basslines and dreamy Rhodes that marry with jubilant horns and Sá’s incredible vocal tones.

On the B side, Equipe Rádio Cidade ‘Bons Tempo Sao Paulo (Good Times)’ was originally released on a rare promo only 7 inch from 1980. Giving a Brazilian boogie makeover to Good Times by Chic / Rapper’s Delight by Sugarhill Gang, the track is voiced by radio DJs from Sao Paulo wishing their listeners a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

This replayed version, heavy on the clavinet with a samba-infused, cuica-laced percussion breakdown, gives a true Brazilian spin on one of the most distinctive melodies out there.

‘Les Cigales’ takes its’ sonic cues from the structure of film and TV music from the 1960s and 70s, channelling the influence of film composers such as Francois de Roubaix and David Axelrod, whilst also sitting somewhere between the washed out, sun-soaked sonics of Surprise Chef and Robohands. As the EP unwinds, its narrative reflects a love story, full of longing, melancholy and drama, connecting with the story of Gyptis and Protis – the founding myth of Marseilles – whose love broke convention and welcomed the arrival of foreign people on French soil.

The project follows The Offline’s debut album ‘La couleur de la mer’, released in November 2023, which saw him create his own soundtrack to a film yet to be made. Inducing images of manorial, fog- swept villas at the seas edge, silhouetted sailing boats and cigar-chomping villains attempting to thwart the mission of an imaginary hero, the record is a masterfully composed sonic journey. ‘Les Cigales’ sees him continue to build upon a distinctive sound that moves from dramatic cues to fragile romanticism, incorporating psychedelic spaciness, retro soul and hip-hop sensibilities informed by his extensive record collection.
