In celebration of the Persianate new year usually taking place on March 21st Afghan-German producer artist Farhot announces his follow up project “Nowroz 1401” which translates into “New Year 1401” – the number marking the year according to the solar calendar which is used in countries like Afghanistan and Iran. While Nowroz is being celebrated in several additional regions like Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or Kirgizstan and partly also in Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Georgia and Turkey – this 3-Track EP pays tribute to Afghan contemporary artists like singer-songwriter Calid, London based Elaha Saroor and rapper Khan all while referencing the golden era of Afghan psychedelic pop most prominently represented by Ahmad Zahir samples – and with that marking this special release as a contribution to preserving Afghan culture and tradition while Afghanistan’s recent brutal occupation by the Taliban continue to threaten and erase Afghan artistic tradition. Further “Nowroz 1401” was born out of the urgent feeling to uphold and celebrate an essential tradition of Persianate cultures so that the following generations of diaspora children don’t lose access to their cultural heritage while not being able to live or visit their countries of origin, where such holidays are institutionalized and therefore experienced as a community festivity.

Nowadays many East Coast Boom Bap collectors deep in the game are hunting for little known hardcore hip-hop from the late 90's and early 00's. In an era when hardcore New York rap starting falling off there were other areas like Virginia, along with DC and Baltimore to name a few that spawned a lot of street crews and rappers detailing the hustle and everyday struggle to surivive. Most of these releases were extremely limited and only sold locally making them very sought after in this day and age.

One of those rappers was Starr Nyce, a man from Lynchburg a.k.a. Hill City (Iceburg), VA that even the most knowledgeable headz might not know. In that era Starr Nyce dropped several dope street albums that are plain and simple impossible to find these days. HHE has had the privilege to look inside Starr Nyce's vaults and handpick some of the dopest tracks. The result is an album that's 19 tracks deep shedding light on life through the eyes of Starr Nyce. I hope you will enjoy this one as much as I have, 1L!

In the performance of this work, "Plan for Sleep" (1986), created simultaneously with “Every Dog Has His Day” (1985), Yamanaka took on the role of sound operation. The performance begins with a minimal piece where the tones of the electronic organ and striking phrases from the piano and saxophone race forward in syncopation. Following this, various sound fragments drift over a deafening industrial beat reminiscent of machine noises. There are also pieces that transform the typing sounds of a typewriter into rhythm, showcasing a range of experiments inspired by the then-novel sampling technology, beautifully intertwining with the physicality of the performance.

Additionally, influenced significantly by film music, Yamanaka incorporates a rich tapestry of colors through melancholic melodies that evoke various scenes, from secular jazz to other influences. This work constructs a uniquely original and sophisticated worldview that stands out even when surveying the canon of avant-garde performance art from around the globe in the postmodern era.

Dumb Type is a multimedia performance art group based in Kyoto that was formed in 1984 and continues to be active at the forefront of the art scene. We are excited to announce the simultaneous release of two cassette book works produced by musician Toru Yamanaka and the late Teiji Furuhashi, a central figure of the group, for works from the early Dumb Type Theatre era: "Every Dog Has His Day (recorded in 1985)" and "Plan For Sleep (recorded in 1986)," now available for the first time on vinyl.

Since the founding of Dumb Type, Yamanaka has primarily been responsible for music production, while the late Furuhashi played a crucial role in translating Yamanaka’s compositions into stage direction. Their collaboration began with previous groups ORG and R-still, and was influenced by the NEW Wave and progressive rock trends they were pursuing at the time, as well as by artists like Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, and Robert Wilson, who fused minimal music and avant-garde performance. Moreover, their bold incorporation of cutting-edge sampling and house music during that era laid the foundation for Dumb Type's sound, marking an important intersection in the history of minimalism, ambient music and performance art in Japan.

These are the Adderley brothers, Cannonball and Nat, respectively on alto sax and cornet, and both at the head of a top flight quintet featuring Mr. George Duke on piano (acoustic and electric), Walter Booker - bass and Roy McCurdy - drums. Recorded live in Vienna in November 1972, this is a fine example of pure electric Jazz-Funk of the era. The album opens with an ecstatic twenty minutes long version of George Duke's "Black Messiah" and it goes on with equal intensity throughout five other tracks including three Joe Zawinul classic gems, "Directions", "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "the Scene".

Death Is Not The End sub-label 333 turns up the gold again with this repro of the much in-demand Flames cut of Nairobi Sisters' Promised Land. Sampled by Q-Tip for "Whateva Will Be" (appearing on ATCQ's final long-player) and on a range of earlier 90s boom-bap era productions, it is not at all hard to figure out why it's a coveted record. That break is as low-slung and funky as it gets, and best showcased on the superbly stripped-back dub on the flip.

The Nairobi Sisters were singers Terrie Nairobi and Judy Mowatt (later of the I-Threes, alongside Rita Marley & Marcia Griffiths). Promised Land was originally recorded together with The Gaytones for Sonia Pottinger's Gay Feet label, with this later version cut for Winston Jones' Brooklyn-based Flames Records. It is issued here under license from producer and songwriter Jones - the original singer and composer of Stop That Train (later made world-famous by Keith & Tex's version) with his Spanishtonians in the early 1960s - who later moved from JA to NYC where he established and ran the Flames label, a core imprint in Brooklyn's reggae scene from the mid-1970s until the early 1990s. 333 has licensed a range of Flames-era productions from the now Texas-based Jones, so keep and eye out for more as it comes... but for now, jump on this before it's gone!

Dario Argento’s ‘opera prima’ ‘L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo’ was premiered in 1970 and marked an historical and revolutionary debut, being a truly original and innovative thriller. The stylistic choices of Argento mark a clear step forward from the thrillers of that era and even the soundtrack was something utterly special.

Argento assigned the score to Ennio Morricone, composer of the soundtracks for ‘Comandamenti per un gangster’, ‘C’era una volta il west’, ‘Metti, una sera a cena’ ‘Un esercito di 5 uomini’ and ‘La stagione dei sensi’, which Argento had already written the screenplay of. For this movie the maestro adopted a particular style that draws heavily on contemporary music and on the studies of his Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. With ‘L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo’ Morricone develops this approach and defines a 'formula': he alternates traditional songs, built around an easy and immediate melody used as a leitmotiv, with avant-garde and abstract tracks that amplify the state of uneasiness and fear of the viewers of tension and violence sequences.

Cinevox released this soundtrack on an LP with 10 tracks in the spring of 1971 when ‘Il gatto a nove code’ was already a big hit in the Italian cinemas. The record was originally issued in mono, with different tracks from the Stereo US version. This is the first vinyl reissue featuring the original score in Stereo, enclosed in a brand new artwork made by Adventprod studios!

Brrraaannnngg!! – As brash, bright & vibrant as its Alan Aldridge influenced, pop art, outer cover art, Oranges & Lemons, XTC’s ninth studio album, issued in February 1989, arrived like a burst of audio summer at the end of winter. Eloquently answering the question: “How do you follow-up a classic album?” with the most obvious answer “with another great recording”, the album consolidated XTC’s position – especially in America – as one of the era’s finest recording outfits. Following the slow burn success of Skylarking, which by then had become the band’s biggest selling album to date, Virgin suggested the band should consider another American producer. Re-issue of the album from 1982, recorded at Channel One & Harry J Studios with the Roots Radics and mixed at Channel One by Soldgie Hamilton!- "Look How Me Sexy" features nine Linval Thompson productions while the hit title track, produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes, features one of the top reggae riddims of its time ("I'm Not Getting Crazy"), which is most known by Frankie Paul's "Worries In The Dance". While most of the album's ten tracks fit the lovers rock style of the era, it also includes the brooding "I Spy", with the riddim that was also used for Eek-A-Mouse's "Do You Remember". Furthermore dubbed out versions exsist of "Are You Ready", "Call Me", "Things Couldn't Be The Same" and "Holding On To My Girlfriend", all mixed by Scientist and released in the´Greensleeves Dub Classic series.

Linval Thompson was one of the first reggae singers of his era to move into self-production, he was known initially as a roots and culture artist, recording for various producers including Bunny "Striker" Lee before initiating his own studio sessions in 1978. In 1979, he mentored Henry "Junjo" Lawes as a producer, who in turn would become one of the most successful producers of the early 1980s, eclipsing Thompson in terms of output.

Le Renard Bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between Lafawndah and composer Midori Takada, and filmmakers Partel Oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. As transmitted by Takada, the fox appears in both ancient Senegalese and Japanese folktales as the trickster archetype; belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. Mexican rock had a strong renaissance in the eighties, when most bands, majorly coming from the prog scene, turned to Spanish language again. One of the big acts from that era was Jorge Reyes' led Chac Mool. Chac Mool counted on its ranks with Carlos Alvarado, who was an accomplished musician on its own and who would record one of the most interesting electronic prog albums of the era, on which Reyes also collaborated. Originally released on mexican private label Momia in 1980. Carlos Alvarado's Via Lactea (Milky Way) is now reissued on vinyl 35 years later. Eurock was especially interested in electronic Cosmic Music exploring both the inner and outer spaces of sound and consciousness. Of all the great music I had heard from Germany’s Klaus Schulze to Tangerine Dream & Spain’s own Neuronium, the album by Carlos stood apart from the rest. The Wah Wah reissue, made under license from and with the help of Carlos Alvarado himself, comes with remastered sound and will include one bonus track not on the original LP. Like the original, it will be housed on a flapped envelope style cover, this time in luxury silk screened metallic copper cardboard. Features are a colour insert with photos and notes, plus a bonus Momia sticker based on the one given on the original release. This is a limited edition, only 500 copies pressed.

A sparsely documented yet iconic era for Ted Milton's psycho-funk afro punk fake no-wave pogo jazz group Blurt has been brought to life with an expansive collection of restored versions of live performances. Captured on early camcorders during the frenzy of counter-cultural activity that characterised Europe around the fall of the Iron Curtain, these recordings of Blurt, recently posted by fans on YouTube, are a visceral reminder of a scene whose influence is writ large on today's alternative music culture.

Ted Milton's trio have produced an impressive string of albums, not to mention his numerous solo recordings. Featuring 15 tracks spanning their extensive discography from their 1980 debut single – also the title of this collection – “My Mother Was A Friend Of An Enemy Of The People” to 1999’s “Eat Up Your House”, this live collection of performances have been digitised by whatever means available. The original sound captured by the inbuilt microphones of these camcorders and the videos concerned are in many cases the only documentation of an iconic era whose zeitgeist was so masterfully epitomised for many by Blurt.

Refurbished / restored/ repurposed using new AI tools there is a spectral roughness to them but surfing on these reconstructed waveforms, the inimitable machinations of Blurt ride out once again, emerging from a pixilated oblivion to put into perspective the peculiar absurdity of our human condition.

When Richard Thompson began writing songs for his latest album, Ship to Shore, the artist was instinctively drawn to his own musical roots, employing them in the service of fashioning a deep and diverse 12-track collection that pulls from various styles, genres and eras, but remains unmistakably Richard Thompson.
